Great video! Glad you didn’t hide the fact that we sometimes get stuck on a job having to put in a ton of extra effort and eat the extra costs because we have to keep up our integrity. If we tell a customer a price range we should do our best to keep that if we possibly can. Much respect!
I stuck with you bro! Very good stuff because, I'm going to be getting into the biz and, knowing that not everything or every job won't go perfect as planned helps a LOT!
The wool pad and Menzerna 400 heavy cut. Glad to see you did that because that is what I used. I'm following up with Jescar Power Lock Polymer Sealant to remove hologram Thanks Drake! I know this is a old video but people are still learning from it today.
Sanding on a bass boat today and ran into what I thought was oxidation that I just couldn’t crack chasing it with 600. Eventually was able to tell it was a bad repair job and the clear coat was foggy 🤦♂️
@@DrakesDetailing no I was able to remove the rest of the oxidation no problem. Guess I could’ve been more aggressive with it but didn’t want to risk burning through the clear. It’s like the clear was foggy all the way down to the metal flake. Have you ever run into this?
This helped a lot. I’d rather learn from your moments than not know what to do when I have them. My business is two months old, so thanks for helping me know this about scratches in advance. The business is going well btw. Lots of word of mouth business. Unfortunately, due to winter coming there will be a two month lull.
Great video! I definitely enjoyed it. All the guys on the forums lately Have been jumping right to a DA after the sanding. Which would mean after the 3000 you could’ve used menzerna 400 with the DA and been done. I didn’t have much luck with that method
Your work really made that boat "pop". Lesson learned - make sure you do the test prior to quoting. Sometimes when estimating a project / job, things are missed. It happens in all businesses, not just detailing. Those costs, whether labor or material, have to be absorbed in the overhead to keep the customer satisfied. You cannot grow a business with upset customers. One upset customer who spreads their dissatisfaction will offset ten great customers who praise your work.
Video's that show how to get yourself out of trouble are often the most helpful! I stuck with it and learned a lot! I am a surgeon and always have to be prepared for dealing with unanticipated problems, so thanks for this video! The question I have is what do you do with the lettering and numbers on the boat? Do you cover it with anything. You don't sand over it do you?
Hey Drake made it to the end great video. I used your steps for my old 81 oxidized sailboat and it worked great. Results weren’t as good as your as I am still working on my technique but man what a difference. I went 1000 grit, level R, menzerna 400 on white wool pad then elevate with the DA. Finally sealed with Jescar. Would love to see a video about how to maintain a boat that is out of the water for the winter. I am on Great Lakes so boat is out oct 1-may 1. Do I polish and reseal in fall? Wait till spring? What steps can I do to keep oxidation from coming back. Thanks again for the videos man you are a great teacher.
I've been binge watching your videos and through a bunch of them I was wondering about the Menzerna 400 on the Makita rotary. But you have thrown in a couple curve balls with the hard gelcoat and the extra sanding steps. I have a sail boat with a little bit of oxidation and I am not looking for perfection but a good plan to keep it maintained long term, I am weary of pulling off to much gelcoat, It is an 80s hull. It seems that there is a fair amount of knowledge at knowing which steps to do when and how you can switch it up. How do the presta pads stack up to the 3M pads?
3m pads are good, but alittle expensive for what you get. They will work though. I would try menzerna 400 on a wool pad using the makita. That will cut lightly and finish really nice!
Have you worked on any Formula boats since this one? I am curious if they will all give you issues with removing swirl marks or if this one was just an anomaly... I have a restoration on this exact model boat in a month and was curious if I should plan for the same steps
Love your videos. By the way, what wireless earphones do you use in your videos. Looking for some cheap good ones for when i buff, my last ones were not good 😅. Congrats on your work
Nice, following from Spain. A bit hard to find all the American products over here, the yachting chandlers work more with 3m and Starbrite. Have you tried them?
Yes, any time you sand, you are removing gel coat. But a lot of the times, that oxidized gel coat is dead anyway, so you aren’t really hurting the boat more than it’s already damaged, if that makes since
Great vid Brother. How do you wet sand between the letters (boat name)on the back of the boat?Do you use 1 &2 inch pads etc ,seeing that the letters are on top of the gelcoat?
Hi Drake, I own a similar Formula boat. It's a lighter color blue hull in very good condition. Should I expect it's gonna take these same 5 steps to produce perfection? I understand testing in advance makes the most sense. I just hate to start this project and realize I need more sanding pads, etc and have to wait a week for materials.
the weather so bad hear in uk have done a re watch as can not go down to the yards as still in luck down anyway once you finished this boat did you put wax on it or just leave it plus what do you use in states for teak cleaning
That sucks man! Yes after the correction we apply jester power lock. As for teak cleaning we usually just use a simple all purpose cleaner like super clean. You are also use snappy teak clean.
What about sanding with 3000 then switching to compound, will it make a difference compared to no sanding at all? Just afraid of going to deep with the sanding, the paint is a little thin. Thanks.
What?! Even you run into issues that freak you out? I don't believe it lol. By the way, how do you know if gelcoat is "hard" or that it is gonna need multi step sanding?

The was a big help. I sanded my oxidized RV and the marks were still there. I now know how to fix it. Thanks!

Yes, compounds will dry faster the hotter it is... do smaller sections and use more product

do you ever worry about wet sanding too much and reducing the life of the gel coat? just curious
Yes, any time you sand, you are removing gel coat. But a lot of the times, that oxidized gel coat is dead anyway, so you aren’t really hurting the boat more than it’s already damaged, if that makes since
What are you sanding with ??
FLEX 3401, Groits G9

I just go right up to them.
Watching this video I wonder if you went with 4-5k after you could have skipped the wool pad all together and just polished with the 2500 menzerna
Still here and Very helpful! Did you learn by trial and error in your earlier days?
yes! Everything was through trial and error...
Hi Drake, I own a similar Formula boat. It's a lighter color blue hull in very good condition. Should I expect it's gonna take these same 5 steps to produce perfection? yes, I would plan on doing these steps!
Do you sand the ridges, corners and small places for hand?
Yes, exactly
the weather so bad hear in uk have done a re watch as can not go down to the yards as still in luck down anyway once you finished this boat did you put wax on it or just leave it
plus what do you use in states for teak cleaning

Stuck on your videos all night.. One question, how do you determine when to wet sand or do a heavy cutting compound?
Do a test spot, and if you can’t get the shine back with your heaviest compound then you will need to wet sand
Hey broksi, i stuck through it.
How could you tell that boat needed wet sanding, the before picture you showed in the beginning didnt look that bad?
Did you watch the first video on this boat? It will give it more context.
The boat was really cloudy
What about sanding with 3000 then switching to compound, will it make a difference compared to no sanding at all? Just afraid of going to deep with the sanding, the paint is a little thin. Thanks.
I just don’t think sanding that high is necessary, the most I sand is 2000
Thanks Drake
What?! Even you run into issues that freak you out? I don't believe it lol. By the way, how do you know if gelcoat is "hard" or that it is gonna need multi step sanding?
Yes, believe it or not I do not know everything! Ha. That would be a good video topic! It’s kinda hard to answer that through comments
What is the best ceramic coating to use on a boat? (Longest lasting)
I like igl marine
@@DrakesDetailing do you know of a product a non-professional can buy?
Yes, this product is great! marinedetailsupply.com/collections/sealants/products/liquid-thor-nano-ceramic-marine-coating
I’ll make a video soon!
Did you use the same foam pad for the whole boat or did you go through multiple?
About 3 wools pads and 3 foam pads
Nice vid
Thanks bro!
Hey Brother,
I stuck it out!
How did you get the other side done?
We had to move the boat to another slip so I could do the other side

Check out klingspor wood working for sandpaper. Great quality for half the price. Thanks for the great videos.
They only go up to 2,000 grit wet dry paper. 24.95 for 50 pads.
