Hey, I know that guy. I know that boat too because it’s mine! The boat is eleven years old but is new to me. It came from south Florida, was stored outside and was heavily oxidized. Drake Is very conscientious and achieved amazing results. Thanks Drake!
I do varnish work & sometimes I get asked to polish boats occasionally. I've been watching YT videos for years but there's not any that are helpful....until you posted this perfect video. Finally!!!! You earned a new subscriber.
I have watched a lot of the videos you have produced. I am just a typical guy not looking to do this for a living. However, I noticed a lot of your videos are targeted to guys/gals looking to start to do this a profession. To that I say your a great instructor. The way you present your instructions is truly amazing. Thank you very much for everything you have done and please keep it up.
Thank you for making this video I’ve been watching a lot of videos trying to learn how to buff my boat the correct way and this is the first video that explained it step by step and made it easy to understand.
I wish I saw this video years ago. I have this same buffer and NEVER get awesome results with it, so literally yesterday, I bought the Griout G9 and it's a game changer for me. The Makita wears my ass out! It's a beast of a machine. You definitely make it look easy. Don't get me wrong, it's an awesome machine, for what it's made for, cutting!. Great video, thanks for, enlightening me.
Thanks so much for your comment! Yeah the Makita is a beast! Haha. What stood out about my video to you in-particular to make you improve your buffing result?

Question. How do you work the rotary so that you are not flicking product everywhere? I'm in a tight marina and want to keep my neighbours clean. Thanks.
Great video. Just found tour channel. Inspiring me to take another crack at my boat which I have never been totally happy with since I did it the first time (mostly wrong as I am learning)
Thank you. You did a perfect job of explaining not only what to do but why you do it. That's the way I remember things. Don't tell me the how because I'll forget. Tell me the why and I remember forever. 👍
So glad you did this. I have a very heavily oxidized boat and I know this machine is the secret to restoring my boat. But I am worried to death to use it for fear of leaving swirl marks all over the place. I have used a dual action polisher but the results are not getting me to where I need to get to. You have given me hope. Greetings from New York City
@@DrakesDetailing this. I use a Vertools direct drive DA and it’s great both on boat gel and car paint - so long as you use right pads, take your time and work both methodically and cleanly.
Great Job! I'm.currently working on a 2002 with some oxidation. I'm practicing on the backside of the boat. I do see some improvement but I think I can get it a little better. Tho you
Glad I could help! If you start to get to doing it more, I would invest in some lake country foam pads. There’s some of the best foam pads in the market.😎
Drake how are you? I have the makita 9237c that you recommend in lots of your videos. I also bought 4pcs of 8x1.25” wool double sided pads you recommend as well. But I just realized that the backing plate for the rotary says 7”. Can I still use these pads on my rotary. The plate looks small in comparison to the Wool pads. Thank you and have a blessed day.
What do you initially wash the boat with? Do you want to strip all previous waxes and residue off before compounding? Or just use a regular wash that won't remove previous waxes and oils? Same question before polishing?
I typically wash down the boat with some sort of degreasing agent before I start my buffing, sanding, compounding, or sealing. Dawn dish soap will work fine
Just found you, great videos. Thank you for this video, I just saw why I make the mistakes I make. My biggest problem is using a DA, seems I can't get the hang of it, it keeps stopping the rotary action. You may have a video on this but I haven't found it yet. Any tips will be greatly appreciated. Hey man! Da’s can be a tad tricky, you can’t push too hard or else they’ll stop spinning, and you can’t be too light either because you won’t get your polishing effect. It just takes practice to find the sweet spot in the middle😎
I have another question I wish I show you but I’ll do my best to describe it . My boat is a dark red with sparkles in the paint. I wet sanded it then use some Walmart car polishing . After I buff it out I’ll come back in 20 mins it’s hazed over with white and mainly you can see little white dots . My motor cover came out great .
"Add a bit of water to condition the pad " ...before or after applying the compound to your pad? ( I'm wondering if this might make all the wool fibres stick together in a gooey mess..)
Thanks man for the video as to how to buff I have to buff my boat and fifth wheel camper. That said , hey dude you kept looking around like your about to be arrested, it made me terrible nervous, you need to set up a guard man. Anyway great video.

Hey bro! One of the only videos I have of correcting paint is the video where I detailed that Formula PC, and that was IMRON paint. Haven’t messed with anything like Awlgrip. m.ruclips.net/video/i9a7guIsBK4/видео.html
You continue to impress me with your knowledge. Awesome. How long will you go before changing out the wool pad. Can you clean as you go and use one pad on say a 23' hull ?? Thx and happy new year to all.
Absolutely you can clean as you go and use the same pair of a 23 foot boat, especially if you buy the double sided warpath with the buffer spindle extension.
Hello, just recently subbed to your channel. I like your thoroughness and instruction. Nice work/ results. I have a DA can I get similar results taking the steps I use to polish a vehicle on mild oxidation on a blue stripe on a 94 bayliner? Sonax perfect finish polish is the product. Maybe start with a griot’s garage, compound with a wool pad on DA? Then to a foam pad for the polish step then to a wax? What do you recommend as better wax product? Thank you, you are putting out excellent material for Detailer’s to learn by.
Thanks for the video . I just did the hood on my boat and I’m super happy with the results. I’ve been doing this all wrong .I have one question. Do you buff until the pad is dry and it starts to polish the area ? Or enough to have to wipe it off with a cloth ?
You want to end your cycle, or add fresh compound before it flashes, or dries out. Dry buffing is just abusing the paint, spiking temps, chucking dust and not cutting efficiently. It's also a lot harder to wipe off residue if you overwork it. If your liquid is drying out too soon you're either not using enough or the section size is too large for the conditions.
Love the channel! I'm pulling my boat out this weekend and want to polish and wax before winterizing. There are some light scratches so I was going to polish and wax. What polish and wax would you recommend and which machine should I use?
Hey Man! you probably wanna take a lot of wet sanding steps, and work your way to a really fine sand. Then just work your way down grit wise with the compound, staring with level R then go down from there with the chain of compounds. Then use your finishing polish with a forced rotation. Hope this helps! Here’s a link to my website! drakesmarinedetailsupply.com/
I use my makita for all of my buffing and polish and wax. You just have to know your machine and the pads. I have been buffing for over 20 years. That is way before foam pads and da polishers were the in thing.
bro thank you for the tips. I am one year with my biz and keep learning new things ! Question...do you have any tips and tricks on decal restoration? I do a lot of ski boats and wake boats.
Could be to fast, also a rotary will usually leave them that’s why you should follow up with a DA polisher or forced rotation polisher and a foam pad, it will get them all out
After using your rotary buffer in your following it up with a DA do you do it again with the same aggressive compound or do you move to the next lower aggressive in your serious
Thanks for the great video. For us newbs…any suggestions on removing oxidation around graphics/ stickers down the sides of the boat. I am fearful the compounds and buffer will damage the graphics.
@@DrakesDetailing that is probably a more efficient way of doing it. I usually check regularly but I don't think that is efficient because it makes the whole process take much longer.
Flex is better for sure! You can use the orange force pad, I don’t like using the foam pads to wax. It soaks in alit if product and wastes it. I like the micro fiber for waxing because they are thin and don’t waste product! I like the 6.5 inch pads
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I’ve just started doing fiberglass cleanups and I have been doing this last step completely wrong. How many times do you have/need to reapply the buffing cream onto the pad? I get so much cream and dust everywhere, hoping this will cut down in it. Also, do you not have to put a little bit of water onto the buffing cream? My mind is blown here, looking forward to putting this technique into practice! I LOVE the cleaning tip, thanks again!
Hey! You should clean your pad and re-apply your compound after every pass! No water needed that will ruin the shine and break down the compound prematurely. I highly recommend using all Starke Products, as they provide the best results out of anything else I’ve ever used as a detailer! They extra heavy cut compound “Level R” is the best! Give it a try! drakesmarinedetailsupply.com/collections/starke-surface-technology/products/starke-yacht-care-level-r-heavy-cut-compound?_pos=1&_sid=b312404cc&_ss=r
I’ve gone that slow and burned the gel coat and had to wet sand to remove the burn mark but I’ve been taught a different way and that way is so much faster and easier and leave it spotless with not much swirls which is why I only do a buff and wax not much of a polish but of course customers know that and won’t want to pay for a full stage buff polish and wax
Wow! Great video. I just purchased a Makita 9237C and have never used a polisher before. I want to polish the gelcoat on my 22 Pathfinder that I purchased new in August 2021. My plan is to polish only, not compound, with 3M Finesse It II and a Lake Country white foam pad. I'll follow up with sealer and wax. Anything I should be careful of? Thanks for the great learning session.
@@DrakesDetailing Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, Drake. The boat was at the dealer getting it's 20hr check and I wanted to take another look at it before I responded to your reply. I would call the hull "lightly" oxidized. I cannot see any chalk so to speak, just a bit of dullness. I hoping that I can do a decent job with my existing polisher, pads and polish, sealer and wax. My plan is to go at it with the Finesse It II and a Lake Country CCS white pad, followed by hand applications of West Marine boat polish with PTEF and then a final coat of Meguirs Marine Wax. Thanks for any advice!
Hey Drake! Awesome info. Just picked up a Griots G9 for a boat with ~15 years of scum & scale. Got a suggestion for what to cut it with? Using the griots microfiber pad with maguire’s 67 (one step compound) [their suggestion] but am not really getting anywhere. I was hoping to knock this out in a couple of days, but at this rate it’ll take me a solid month. And a boatload of compound!
The G9 is great for polishing but not cutting. You will need to use a rotary buffer and wool pads to be able to cut out the oxidation. The G9 is great for polishing out swirl marks left behind by the rotary and wool pad and waxing
@@DrakesDetailing - thanks for the reply!! Great to know about the rotary vs G9. What's your suggestion for cutting the oxidation? Is the Meguiar's 67 ok or would the Menzerna 400 be better?
How do I know if I should compound with a rotary buffer & wool pad? Should this only be done if there's light oxidation? Bought some of the Starke products today using your code. Saved me a bunch! Thanks Drake!
@@DrakesDetailing not much. Just water spots and dullness where the fenders are usually placed. Hoping the Starke does a better job preventing the soft fender covers from scratching
Drake, love these informative videos. Quick question. I ceramic coated my new boat last year in the spring. Haven’t uncovered it yet but iam not sure it’s going to be RE coated. Can I just put a coating of hyper hold on it?. Thank you in advance
Great Video man thanks! I'm a mobile detailer and I do paint corrections and enhancements. My friend recently purchased a boat and he wants me to do paint correction/ paint enhancement on it. My question is : Can You use Compressed air to blow out the Wool Pads?? Any response would be GREATLY appreciated . 👍🏽✌🏽🙏
Similar question to the one below. When cutting with the rotary, how often to you add more compound to the pad? Or do you not add after it's caked and leverage the spur?
@@DrakesDetailing I have been following your videos for about a year now, and I just took the big leap of faith. Ready for my first season and excited to see what happens.
Really enjoying the content and channel. What RPM is best for mild to slight oxidation removal? Advice appreciated for '99 VIP project on the horizon in Indiana. Purchase of tool & supplies as well, you motivated me to "try".
some said you cannot achieve orbital polisher's level of cutting power by dual action polisher. If I only have DA polisher, do you have any recommendation to get to the maximum cutting? Thanks.
Just found this channel and love it, well-done man! I'm just a DIYer but have been doing my own boat for a number of years. My boat does not have any oxidation but some fine scratches and swirls. Should I only be using wool pads for applying compound? Or both compound and polish then foam pads for applying jescar power lock? By the way, I ordered a few products from your site, and 10 minutes after I submitted I was altered my items have been shipped! Hell of a turnaround! Was shocked when I got that message so quickly!
Thanks for the order! I appreciate the compliments! If your boat just has minor scratches and swirls a foam pad with menzerna 400 will do the trick. Do this on a DA machine or the flex 3401.

Great info!!!!! Thanks
Great video thank you
Glad you enjoyed it! 😎
Whatever works right!
Would you suggest using the Power Lock after a polish, or could it be used as a polish/wax on a boat?
After a polish, it has no abrasives in it, only a protectant
I’d the boat oxidized at all? If it is the 3m finesse won’t be heavy enough to cut away the oxidation
Awesome! thanks for purchasing! if there is any fading or dullness use a rotary and wool pad!
@@DrakesDetailing not much. Just water spots and dullness where the fenders are usually placed. Hoping the Starke does a better job preventing the soft fender covers from scratching
Can you put painters tape on the boat to see your sections easer ??
You can, but I find it somewhat annoying to be trying to buff out tape lines
Drake, love these informative videos. Quick question. I ceramic coated my new boat last year in the spring. Haven’t uncovered it yet but iam not sure it’s going to be RE coated. Can I just put a coating of hyper hold on it?. Thank you in advance
Hi Rich! To coating should still be good, it had only been on there for one season. What coating did you use?
Love the VIDS, One question is there a all in one machine you would recommend, so I don't need to buy 2 different machines??
There is the Lake Country UDOS. It has 8mm, 12mm, 15mm, 21mm throw free spin DA modes, and a rotary mode. It's expensive though.
You can, but you’re better of using a stick or spur
@@DrakesDetailing ok sounds good thank you... Guess a good detail brush (with medium stiff bristles) would work too?
Hi mate, I have i white boat with a blue stripe about 5 inches wide. Should I cut it separately to the white?
Hey bro! There’s no need to, the pad will get messy but it won’t blend the colors of the gelcoat together 😎
Thank you sensei
No problem! Haha
I'm about to detail a 19.5 bass boat, I need to take the wax off and put more on, any advice u can help me with

Excellent how too ..thx man
You're welcome!
Is it possible to compound in the sun, I have no open to do so in the shade unless it’s cloudy
Yes! That’s more old-school compound where it’s like paste and it will dry too fast in the sun.
How often do you re-fluff your pad while compounding a boat?
After every section!
Similar question to the one below. When cutting with the rotary, how often to you add more compound to the pad? Or do you not add after it's caked and leverage the spur?
I personally would add compound roughly every 2-3 feet, buff it in, then wipe off and repeat. Clean your pad between every section.
This is exactly how I was taught. I know I'm going to be just fine in this industry.😊
Thanks great!!! Keep up the awesome work!! 🔥🔥😎
Thanks for watching, Rmp range between 800- 1500
some said you cannot achieve orbital polisher's level of cutting power by dual action polisher. If I only have DA polisher, do you have any recommendation to get to the maximum cutting? Thanks.
If your only option was a DA I would use A lake country wool pad or a rupes wool pad on the DA
u need rotary. they have decent ones at harbor freight. or spend a little more and get makita
Keep at it, enjoying your videos
Thanks, will do!
Drake, do you have any experience with Shine Supply Wake Up?
Yes I do! It’s a great product
Outstanding
@@DrakesDetailingAppreciate it. Thank you for the quick reply!
No problem
Hey Drake, quick question. Do you think it's ok to use a 7inch wool pad vs. a 9inch pad?
It should be a 7 inch pad on a rotary. Anything bigger will throw the machine out of wack
