Hey man, really appreciate your videos and I hope you continue to share you knowledge with us! I was wondering if at some point you could do a video explaining how you choose which type of pad to use when starting a job. I have Tried 3m and it is pretty good! There are a lot of good compounds and polishes out there! A lot of the time it comes down to personal preference and depending on what products you are comfortable with and know how to use. A lot of products break down differently and cut differently so It comes down to knowing how to use certain products and also what you’re comfortable with. I typically stick with Ardex products and menzerna products only because I have used them for years and I know how to work them very very well. Not saying that they are the best product out there but I know how to use them and I know what to expect and the results I get are always consistent because I know how to work the products.
Great video! I really appreciate the honesty. I have been using Ardex for 25 years. Just getting back into the swing again. I still have my Makita Rotary Polisher from 1990, just picked up a Griots G-15.I am also playing around with Adams products. Can't wait to try our some of your suggestions.
Just added the new HF 20mm da polisher to my Porter Cable and Shurhold units. The consensus is to change the 6" backing plate to a 5" plate. Do you agree or would you stay with the 6" plate for boat detailing ? Also, do you know of any other mfgs. other then Rupes that have 5" plates compatible with the HF unit ? Great site
Yellow? That’s kinda weird... try bleaching it with comet. After you may need to take some compound to it with a rotary buffer. Keep it on the slowest setting and work it it. That should remove the chalk.

Hey bro, I'm brand new to this world of detailing I've been watching your videos all morning. Now if I can pick your brain. Long story short using jescar didn't take oxidation off. I have a da and various pads. What's my quickest route to oxidation removal before jes ar will work. I know that's a tough one each case is specific but what would you suggest?
Hey bro! Jescar won’t take oxidation off. If you’re looking for something quick, I would try chop top compound by shine supply with a yellow pad, then follow up with a dual action polisher with wake up, polished by shine supply, then Jescar powerlock.
I think the take away here is the more basic cleaning products don’t have to be super expensive. The money should be spent on quality pads, machines and compounds/polishes etc?
New boat owner as of last year I was advised to use muriatic acid diluted to get scum off bottom of boat. Your thoughts? Should I switch to Rust aid? Thanks sir! Enjoy your helpful videos thanks for your time. Dan
@@DrakesDetailing do you clay the boats that you are going to ceramic coat? I have a flats boat coming up that is basically new and does not need to be polished.
Nah, I never clay boats... I always recommend a light polish before coating, even if it’s brand new! Use like menzerna 2500 on a white lake country force pad. After you polish it, wash with dawn , dry it, alcohol wipe it, then coat it.
I just bought a Shurhold pro oscillating buffer. Super heavy. Also, I have a hard time finding wool polishing pads. Would you do a video on polishing pads? I’m new to the business, and used wool on my own boat: 3M cutting pad and polishing pad. Shurhold sells mainly sponge pads that are expensive and don’t work as well as my wool pads. The pads for the pro buffer are all sponge. Not sure why. What are your thoughts on which pads work best for which application?
That’s would take a lot to explain! It’s a much need video and I will make it! Give me a few weeks! Short answer is foam pads are more for polishing and waxing and wool pads are for cutting oxidation out.

Hi Arnie! Thanks so much. Jescar is all you will need, it’s a polymer sealant. It’s way stronger than wax. No need to put a wax over a polymer sealant.
Thanks for all this great info. IF I may ask, I got a used boat mako 221, it has a rubber trim that looks dull. What do you suggest to use, to make it look fresh and shinny. Thanks in advance

Helpful Video. Thanks you. I have a good sized boat and applying the (final) wax by hand isn't really an option. Is there a pad you would recommend for the rotary polisher? Or only apply with a dual action? Thanks again!
Hi Drake. Have you ran into a problem where you could not wash a boat with a pressure washer or hose? What did you use to clean the boat before you started detailing and waxing? I work at a ship yard where we are not allowed to wash boats with a hose or pressure washer. Thanks! Great videos!
It was a 36ft Jeaneau powerboat. And it had a bunch of salt crystals all over. The starboard side was really oxidized compared to the port. He has had issues with right side for the last few years and it still oxidizes in about 6 months where the other side is fine. It was a lot of work.
Hello! What product do you use for one step light cutting and finishing? do you use 2 separate products or one for an easy single application of a one step cut plus finish. Thanks drake!
@@DrakesDetailing Thank you for responding! I am just doing my own boat btw, no business, but following your steps! '02 GW Marlin my 3rd year with the boat, was very chalky. Couple years ago you were a big Stark product advocate. Then you had your fallout and now have moved to shine supply. Getting away from price how would you compare the marine product lines?
Drake, Great video - I live up in Canada and I cannot seem to find the Goof Off Rust Aid. Do you have any other suggestions for removing the water stains? any help would be great. Oh BTW - Menzerna 400 Compound / Polish & Jescar Sealant combo has worked amazing on our boat and vehicles!
Drake Great video. I am learning a lot and I thank you for that. What do you use for carpet in a boat. My work is in fresh water and most of the boats have carpet. any help you can give me will be appreciated.
What is a good cleaner to get grease stains off the boat after I’m done like servicing the engine it’s an inboard outboard so I’m in the boat so a lot more messy than a boat with an outboard, also what’s a good way to clean the bilge of a boat
What do you like using for DEEP rust stains? Just did a 39 contender that had really deep rust stains on the motor mounts on the transom and they just laughed at the rust remover I had. Also, how do you compound around tight areas that you cant get a machine in? TIA!
Deep rust marks usually have to be wet sanded out or compounded with a wool pad. I usually like to just hit it with 2000 grit sand paper and polish it back out. As for tight spots, use the flex pxe80 with 1 inch pads, or by hand.
Hey bud, awesome videos and really appreciate your advice. Just purchased a 1999 Bluewave 16ft center console and she is really Oxidized. I picked up some 3M perfect it light polish and wax and tried using it but it really didn’t achieve good results. So I was wondering what you would recommend to use to bring her back and I also have the Griot polisher you recommended just not sure which pads to get to buff it out and then polish it. Thanks Rob
Drake, great video as always. I want to start detailing my own boat and your videos have been great. My hull has been painted. All your videos seem to discuss cutting, polishing, and waxing Gel Coated Hulls. Is there any difference in the process for a painted hull? Thank You and I look forward to more videos. Ken
Paint isn't much different except when it comes to sanding. Compound, Polish and Waxing are all the same. Sanding is the only thing that needs to be done differently, But 9 out of 10 you shouldn't need to sand paint.
@@DrakesDetailing Thanks for the reply. My paint has a good amount of oxidation. It's not chalky when I rub my hand on it. But when you shine a light on it at night you can clearly see the oxy. Do you think I can get by without sanding? If not how is the process different. BTW, I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but I have been purchasing all your recommended products through your links. I've spent over $1200.00 so far and I'm sure I'll be needing more. Thanks again for your help, your how to videos are extremely helpful for a first-timer like me.
Wow thanks for purchasing all those items! I appreciate it. It’s hard to tell you for sure with out looking at the boat. But if you did have to sand, use adralon 1000,2000 and 3000 then do you compound and polishing steps
It’s all different man, I don’t really have sweet prices. On smaller boats from 0 to 40 ft it would be about $20 for topside ands hull around a $10 a ft
In my opinion, 3M is very behind the eight ball with products. They were really good 25 years ago, but the detailing industry has come such a long way and they are still stuck back in those days. Shine supply a lot better and depth of shine IMO. They are good products! However, other products have still come a long way.

Thanks for all this great info. IF I may ask, I got a used boat mako 221, it has a rubber trim that looks dull. What do you suggest to use, to make it look fresh and shinny. Thanks in advance
I’ll usually use acetone on a white rag to clean it up... then you can apply a vinyl protectant like 303 or Si02 mckees 37 hydro pearl
Hey Drake, love your vids. Question for you......what do you use to bring back dull and faded black rub rails?
you can use acetone on a white rag to clean them up. then apply a ceramic coating, or a vinyl protectant like 303
Ive had very good results with mothers back to black
Can you pls do an up to date video. See what you use now

Very thorough…props.
Thanks 😎
Have you tried any of the new graphene products on boats yet to test their resistance to water spotting? About to coat a new boat. Wanting to pick a good product. IGL marine not available to weekend warrior.
igl isn’t, but another great product is getundrdog.com/product-category/ceramic-coatings/
I haven’t tried the graphene products yet
Helpful Video. Thanks you.
I have a good sized boat and applying the (final) wax by hand isn't really an option.
Is there a pad you would recommend for the rotary polisher? Or only apply with a dual action?
Thanks again!
Only apply with a dual action. The rotary will leave swirl marks

What supplements do you take to help detox being exposed to chemicals all day? Take a look into selenium
I don’t haha
Hi Drake. Have you ran into a problem where you could not wash a boat with a pressure washer or hose? What did you use to clean the boat before you started detailing and waxing? I work at a ship yard where we are not allowed to wash boats with a hose or pressure washer. Thanks! Great videos!
That’s kinda strange... honestly I have never had that issue. What size is the boat? And how dirty is it ?
It was a 36ft Jeaneau powerboat. And it had a bunch of salt crystals all over. The starboard side was really oxidized compared to the port. He has had issues with right side for the last few years and it still oxidizes in about 6 months where the other side is fine. It was a lot of work.
What’s a good carpet cleaner for boats?
Nice!! Thank you for your video really nice
You’re welcome!!
Hello! What product do you use for one step light cutting and finishing? do you use 2 separate products or one for an easy single application of a one step cut plus finish. Thanks drake!
Shine supply wake up! 🤘
@@DrakesDetailing Thanks so much drake! Your videos are super helpful!!
Love your videos, learning a lot. What actual wax do you use? Or do you just finish with the jescar?
Hi Matt! Yes, the Jescar is the “wax”. It’s a polymer sealant, so it’s a synthetic wax. It lasts 3 times as long as traditional wax.
@@DrakesDetailing Thank you for responding! I am just doing my own boat btw, no business, but following your steps! '02 GW Marlin my 3rd year with the boat, was very chalky. Almost done wet sanding, just got my manzerna in the mail yesterday, still waiting for the ardex and jescar is on it's way too!
Bro why is it so hard to find a heavy cut compound lol. Tried finding ardex 600, cant find it in stock. Can't find the one you recommended on your one topside video. Is 3m heavy cut going to do the job on a faded topside? I have some wizards turbo cut that got recommended to me by a lot of body shop guys but dont see people use it in the boat industry
Get stake level R
Amazing content fam! I learned a lot thanks
That’s awesome!! So glad I could help!!
How old do you have to be to start a boat detailing business. You are my favorite RUclipsr nice vid
Thanks bro! I’d say there is no age limit as long as your parents let you ha
Drake! What boat soap do you use for maintenance details or washing the boat? I currently use Orpine but wanted to see if you used any with SIO2? You are the man and an inspiration. Keep the great content coming!!!
Thanks for watching, Oprine is good stuff but for Si02 soap use this!

no word but YOU'RE AMAZING.
Ha thanks bro! I hope this can help you! You may just have to get creative with the products
You do ramble a bit great info I really enjoy the video's to make purple power perfect add dawn,
Thank you!
What do you dilute purple power to clean seats and the floors in a boat
No set radio, most times I use is straight. You just need to be extremely careful not to let it sit too long
Do you think I could use menzerna marine premium protection the same way as powerlock plus?
I really appreciate your videos, you make it look easy!! I get a lot of tips from you and I only maintain my own boats. You are the best in the BIZ !!!!
You are right about CG, it’s to many products.
Keep detailing those boats 👍🏼
Q. Any reason for not using snow foam ?
No it’s a fine product
Purple Power is no joke. You can/should dilute, and it’ll last even longer.
I agree! Thanks for sharing!
When using the ardex hard water stain remover. How careful do you have to be with the run off
Just make sure it doesn’t strip your wax and you’ll be good! 😎
Couple years ago you were a big Stark product advocate. Then you had your fallout and now have moved to shine supply. Getting away from price how would you compare the marine product lines?
Both are great products wise. Shine supply is a much better business all around .
Some warm water and some mildew remover should work fine
What about Woody Wax for non skid?? use it or not ?
I could watch this all day long 😂😂😂
Hahah
Loved the video
Thank you!
Hey Drake! What do you recommend to clean a vinyl wrapped boat. I've been using baby shampoo, don't know if thats good or bad.
What do you recommend for cleaning mould out of a cabin?
Diluted bleach water
Very informative Thank You
Glad it was helpful!
What is a good cleaner to get grease stains off the boat after I’m done like servicing the engine it’s an inboard outboard so I’m in the boat so a lot more messy than a boat with an outboard, also what’s a good way to clean the bilge of a boat
Hey Blake! Purple Power, or Super Clean are both really great degreasers for that type of job!!
@@DrakesDetailing Thank you also I bought some starke simple clean and it’s awesome stuff great for removing exhaust soot off the transom
Great video, really Happy I found your videos. Any thoughts on Jescar Ultra Lock Ceramic?
Also I have SeaDek flooring in our boat any recommendations on cleaning and protecting that kind of foam floor?
Hey Bro! I would just use simple green cleaner/mild degreaser with a stiff Libman scrub brush, then rinse it off with a hose afterwards.
Will Dawn dish soap remove compounding and polish too or only wax?
It will remove the compound and polish residue left over
What do you like using for DEEP rust stains?
Thanks Rob
What color is the boat?
@@DrakesDetailing It is white👍
You can follow all of the steps in my latest video! That should work perfect for you
Sorry newbie here. Where would I find link to products. Love your videos so far. I’m learning so much
Hey Jackie! No worries! All of my products are actually to purchase right here on my webpage! drakesmarinedetailsupply.com/
Thank you!!!
Try Aquabuff 2000 a try for compound one time
I’ve tried it before 😊
What do you charge per foot for the outside? And what do you charge for the inside?
It’s all different man, I don’t really have sweet prices.
On smaller boats from 0 to 40 ft it would be about $20 for topside ands hull around a $10 a ft
Great info. Thank you
You’re welcome
Have you ever used the 3M Perfect-It products? I know they are expensive, but are they technically better than the Shine Supply products?
In my opinion, 3M is very behind the eight ball with products. They were really good 25 years ago, but the detailing industry has come such a long way and they are still stuck back in those days. Shine supply a lot better and depth of shine IMO. They are good products! However, other products have still come a long way.
