I, for one, am very glad they never made The Matrix sequels (there’s an XKCD for that), and when the suits threatened Lana, she made a sequel dripping with so much contempt for its very existence that it ended up being enjoyable in a “so bad it’s good” way.

3:41 Thats a such a good quote. I see people bashing companies all the time for making no sequels but many people in the same situation would do the same without hesitation. Kinda unfortunate how it is though 🤷♂️
Sequels can be good. Being able to expand on a world and continue a story where it was left off or continue past its end is very interesting and can provide important insights to earlier actions or introduce new problems that make the character react in interesting ways. Sometimes people need to be thrown into the freezer and locked in there for a week and then review their work again before deciding to make a sequel… :)
The sequels miss the soul of the originals. There are only a few times where a sequel really *hits*. And one of those times was the second Kung Fu Panda movie.
I just found this channel three days ago and this young man's videos are right up my alley. I enjoy how rapidly he speaks. This is me in hyper- fixation mode.
I definitely needed to hear that 'We can't take the same road to success as our idols' bit so thank ypu for it. I'm a fan of a lot of fanfic writers that I'd pay to have a sliver of their wit or skill or nuance for just a day. It does give me some hope for myself that I can keep trying my own thing to success. Another thing I'd like to add about the familiarity/originality balancing act is true enough, but an argument can be made about the newer generation enjoying the more recent movies more.
The thing of being inspired to tell a story really is true for good sequels. Like inside out 2 i do think is a really good sequel and just like the first one the original creator wanted to tell a story. The original was learning about the importance of sadness and he came to this idea through his daughter and when she grew up and became a teenager he saw a new story that he thought was worth telling. The core idea wasn't to make another movie but to tell a new story.
my favorite thing about the sequel to Megamind releasing is that we did get the beauty that was that one Scaffrillas clip of him tweaking out over its stupidity
1:30 this is why Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are so consistent with quality! Because Nintendo actually took the time to flesh out the story and bring us back to the open world style.
Not aiming to argue here, but Nintendo quite literally doesn't care about story in their games as much as they do for gameplay. It's why they nearly discarded the story they had built up in Breath of The Wild in favor of a new one that's almost entirely disconnected, instead of picking up a lot of interesting threads from what was set up prior. What I was personally a little bummed out about, was how the original champions were mentioned as a bit of a second thought in TotK, making way for the sages. Heck, Revali wasn't even acknowledged at all. All the ancient Sheikah tech and shrines being suddenly gone with no explanation as to why... It feels so odd

11:24 This is EXACTLY how I feel about Dragons: The Nine Realms and the original How To Train Your Dragon. It just isn't the same, Hiccup's goodbye in movie 3 is somewhat ruined because he did it to protect the dragons from humans, but in The Nine Realms, some kids just find them in a fissure. And I know that Hiccup said that the dragons could stay hidden 'until the world is ready' but seriously, do you really think modern day is the world that's ready for dragons? I really don't think so.
I think in many ways, whatever you do or create will always be derived from something else, thus not making it original. As a writer myself, I can track down a lot of sources where I got my inspiration from. Whether it’d something inserting into the setting, characters, themes, scenes, etcetera. I’ve collected things from a lot of other stories I’ve consumed, but also places I’ve been to on vacation. Or even theme parks. But the way I put it all together. That is unique. Just stumbled upon this channel through this video. I’m interested in watching more! Underrated gem.

I agree with the originality point a lot. As an artist, I used to get super pissed when people compared my characters to ones already existing. I was also caught in that insecure state of trying to be as orginal as possible. But now? I don't mind it. I remember a couple years ago, my family went to Orlando and we went on the Fast and Furious ride. It was so laughably bad, my brother was crying laughing. 15:32 I can relate to that. Writing in the fantasy and sci-fi genres, I of course got inspired by a lot of other works. In one of my projects, I was trying to come up with an interesting magic system the way Brandon Sanderson does them. But, I did realise later on that such a system wouldn’t suit my story. Instead, magic is a really big source of power. The few mages that are around can train themselves in a few certain areas of it, but never all of it. So, with that, I could: 1. Connect someone’s magical capabilities with their background and personality. 2. Instil the idea that magic is indeed boundless, adding a big psychological aspect with the non-magical people. In theory, a mage could be capable of everything. That breeds a lot of fear. People tend to over exaggerate things a lot, only adding fuel to the fire.
