Nerdsniping but for ytbers instead of scientists?
I love rabbit hole content. Both when I dive down and when other people fall down. Often some really cool and sometimes disturbing stuff is discovered and learned.
ugh me too. the palpable frustration through the whole video, the annoyed delivery of both very obvious details and details that came from nowhere anyone could have anticipated, the extreme lengths to find answers. it’s top tier content every single time. its always “i wanted something quick and easy to fill the void” and it shows us that nothing quick or easy will ever fill the void, it is hard work and dedication that fills the void
by 2028 we wont be able to afford your emoji
I think the emoji movie might’ve done some damage to the idea that men can use emojis.
Using emojis has been female coded since they entered the American public consciousness.
16:10 we do know why "I'm fine." sounds more aggressive. It's because the period was designed to signify the end of a sentence but you don't really need it when texting since sending the message is itself a way of communicating that the sentence has ended hence the added period must be holding extra information and in this case it's typically interpreted as being "curt" or incredibly/needlessly formal.
Also to add, if someone who doesn't typically use periods or formal writing in their messages suddenly does so mid-conversation, it can feel like a sudden shift in tone. It may give the impression that the "air has changed" in the room, creating a sense of unease or something's not right/okay.
I think it comes down to the fact that internet and online digital typing culture doesn’t use those symbols, and a period is sort of a finisher. Especially if your saying “I’m fine”, which in media, and real life, is normally just a way you know someone is not fine
Old people, who aren’t as “cultured” make more formal typings.
Also I really agree with your comment 😃👍

Let me tell you something: my dad is autistic and goes non verbal for long periods of time. I have barely had a full convo with him in my 23 years of life. But one thing lately that has me full of joy is that he’s learning to use emojis. He used to never answer my messages but now he is with different emojis and I cannot explain the joy I get from seeing a peek into mind. It's a bit surprising to see emoticons getting slandered, because until pretty recently when they started getting auto replaced, they had separate connotations that had to be used carefully in combination. "This place is beautiful
I frequently use multiples of an emoji to denote really large feelings. It doesn’t make it any less personal. These things are highly subjective and contextual, and trying to lay down the law in this way is, as you said, nonsensical.
@@Lari-lc3zq I'm aware, the video itself is silly too. Emojis or emoticons? My point is that they're used differently, or at least they were. I think the maximum of three in a row like he said is very reasonable, *unless* there are no words in the sentence. In that case I'm known to go well above the limit, often for the sake of irony

Great video my g. Your points are conceptually synonymous with those of a creator named Anrel in a really underrated video essay called The Art of Semantics. Among other things, the same idea is applied to meme culture. Very interesting ideas about communication and how we need to care more about context to successfully communicate.

19:41 Oof. Not a man, and I never intentionally not used emojis because I was consciously avoiding emotions. one of my best friends started using the "😇🙏🇫🇮"(usually we use it in discord so 🇫🇮 looks like finnish flag) combination of emojis which many people liked so i also started using it. after some time i invented the "😈🤘🇳🇴"(norwegian flag because it looks a little bit like evil/sinister version of more "pure" finnish flag) which everyone also liked

yea ik- I would use emoticons all the time, heck I would litteraly *make* kaomoji's/emoticons to express what I want it to express because I try and use markdown in my messages to make them flow better and emojis just... _don't.._ work with them
Also probably just a thing with me,
the sudden change to yellow from a greyscale text ticks me off-

@@theblinkingbrownie4654 (;;;・_・) ..shit you got me
I think emojis most of the time feel much more exaggerated than what you can communicate with emoticons or even just internet slang interjections; like I use :) and :( or lol and lmao with friends online a lot, but only emojis for ironic or hyperbolic meanings (unless I’m talking with my family because they do use emojis unironically like that). For example I never am literally saying that I’m dead when I use 💀
@@theblinkingbrownie4654sometimes you just don’t need either emojis or other non linguistic expressions to say something, lol
For some reason I could, and have, watched this dudes videos over and over. Anyway thank you for the content I can reply on repeat.
You seem to have this talent for making videos about the most random things...that are EXACTLY what I wanna learn more about 😆
bro made it that deep 😭😭🙏🏻 (great video tho!)
I think it's interesting that, at least in the circles I'm in, there's a slight ironic twinge to using emojis that is hard to articulate to someone who didn't grow up online like I did? And I wonder if that comes from emoji being seen as 'cringe' and 'corporate' especially in the early 2010s, like peak emoji movie era where corporations were adopting emoji to seem hip with the youth when no one quite used them fully in conversation yet. Even to this day there feels like there's an inherent silliness (positive) to using emoji. Like, I've had serious text conversations and they never include emoji even if it would seem more reasonable to use them to convey a seemingly more nuanced message? But possibly because they're so inherently Casual, I find myself including them as a way to show that I'm not being serious in a message. I'm being silly with it. My favorite combination for doing this is 💪😔 it literally always works. The pensive flex is literally unbeatable imo
Second slightly related topic is how certain emoji take on the tone of what they're commonly used in? Like I know I use ❗️❗️❗️and 🔥🔥🔥 to convey ironic over enthusiasm, literally because of the "WHAT IS HE COOKING❗️❗️❓❓🔥" and similar vein memes- even when the message I'm typing isn't an explicit reference to that meme or containing a similar sentence structure.
Third and final thing about the subsection of emoji usage I see in my peer group is that we tend to use less "face" or "person" emoji? Like at least out of my recently used the only face emoji are 😔 ,😭, and 🤨, and I think it's because I use emoticons and emoji interchangeably for the most part, with the exception that those three express things that don't have an emoticon equivalent.
Anyways here's to hoping for the empty wallet with flies emoji in the near future!
As a wise meme once stated "I am addicted to saying XD ppl think im cringe but im just Polish" (truly, a lot of people here use it on the regular, me included)
okayyyyyy Paul!!! bruh the editing on this video👍🏻🤧😭🫶🏼👀🫡💅🏻

man. i love your videos so much. i wish i could be more verbose about it but i dont have much to say other than you are intelligent, funny, and engaging, the things you choose to talk about are only as important as HOW you talk about them. this video in particular is like. man there is something to learn from anything, anywhere. there are so few things that are truly uninteresting when presented well, and youre good at presenting information. anyway love your videos thank you

Your videos are genuinely so entertaining
this video was interesting to me because i noticed how differently i interpreted some of the examples you gave. I'm 17 and I frequently use emoticons like >:( :3 :> :P etc and they read as more cute/innocent than if i used emojis. if i do use emojis its usually unserious or sarcastic, even passive aggressive but i do sometimes use them as intended when I'm talking to older generations. It also strikes me just how much they overuse them sometimes (think facebook where after every noun they feel the need to add the emoji equivalent to it, like pants👖 which to me is just annoying). it just shows how much our understanding of something so simple can really differ, in this case depending mostly on age (internet culture is also a huge factor)
(im from Poland btw hi:))
I'm also 17, and I use emojis more sarcastically, too.
Most of the people I know do. No one in our generation uses them seriously from what I've seen. I think emoticons are generally more popular. :))

Love this! The English language is lacking in punctuation because it didn’t evolve for communication but for record keeping. Even letters weren’t back and forth communication and those came much later in the languages life span. So we don’t have punctuation to convey tone. And as written language evolved to encompass actual communication in email and text, it also developed punctuation to accommodate for it in the form of emoticon.
People use emojis as an example of language devolving but it’s quite the opposite.
So glad I randomly stumbled upon your channel
You managed to put into words things that I couldn't really understand but just felt
Also, we indeed watch you from different countries, greetings from Belarus!
Awesome video, glad I subbed - your takes are great and the presentation is *chef's kiss*
I think what could be added - if you had another 2 weeks to spare - is how different providers design emojis differently. I've had the longest disagreement about use of a certain emoji with a friend, until we compared how it looked on our phones and yeah, it's not the same vibe. Also different people test in different ways - not just the older generation. With time, an inside language of emojis is built in every conversation - and it's usually different to the "generally accepted" usage of emojis.
Oh and please fix that outlet it gives me anxiety, thanks
the editing has massively improved
