    Soak the hearts of palm in lemon juice or vinegar to get that chewyy calamari texture also leave in the center for a fried scallops effect

    I’m not vegan nor even vegetarian but am loving all the options I have for decreasing animal products in my diet. This looks amazing and I’m going to try it tonight for dinner.

      So true, I just found out im allergic to crabs, after I've been eating them all my life. Allergy testing came back positive, and now i gotta carry an epipen. Im struggling because i want some so bad 🤦🏽‍♀️

      @@rb641 button mushrooms r a good substitute texture wise. if u put them n ur standard crabcake recipe u wont notice the difference

    I’m gonna be honest when I was making them I tried the heart of palm on it’s own & spit it out & told my mom theres no point in making it. She said give it a try, and I’m glad I did! It tastes friggin amazing! I suggest using the breadcrumbs they use in fried shrimps it tastes so much better! Thank you girl!!

    Okay!! So!! I am usually sooooo terrible at cooking 🙈 but this was so easy and I was thinking “it’s too good to be true. It’ll probably be terrible”.. tried a tiny bit waiting to hate it.. but! It’s soooo good!! I’m binge eating them all right now 😍

    When the video popped up on my feed, I already knew I had to subscribe to your channel- which I did- and so far I am not regretting it! Calamari was my fav dish when I was still eating meat. Now that I am vegetarian and seem to be slowly heading to vegan life, I want to know if I can have some of my fav dishes in a vegan version. Now I'm happy! most of all I'm thankful, thank you

    I've been wanting to make these since May of this year, but the old bay seasoning was constantly out of stock at my grocery store. I eventually got some about a month ago, but since I've started college, I spend my time studying over making vegan meals that I know will take me longer than 10, 15 minutes. I finally made them today, and wow! They were soooo delicious! Highly recommend!

      Veggie Rose you should try to process you nori adding 3/4 of it to the cup of water to allow for maxium flavor. Also add a bit of fish sauce to the batter in place of salt. The other 1/4 nori add with the bread crumbs. Try it its great and then let me know.

    If you're looking for the classic seafood dip, tartar sauce its super easy. Doesn't even require any measurements, its all based on your flavor preference. Mix vegan mayo, yellow mustard, relish, lemon juice and/or white vinegar. Stir and add more of what tastes right to you! Start off with mostly mayo, then slowly add the other ingredients. I never measure when I make it and it always turns out delicious.

    I tried fried calamari (made by an award winning chef) just before I became vegan (6+ yrs ago). I LOVE hearts of palm, and have eaten them right from the can. I’ll make these this weekend.
    Btw, Trader Joe’s has hearts of palm for $2/can. Half the price of most brands.

      Yea for me its also seafood I miss.. not meat at all. I miss raw sushi so I can't wait for something that really resembles raw tuna to be created. I've tried all the current things and nothing has done it... but at least this recipe helps with any breaded seafood craving. Thanks for watching!💕

      Lol I think you would like these because they don't have the chewy slimy texture of calamari but they do taste like the ocean and they have that popcorn shrimp feel to them.

      Veggie Rose I’m actually going to be making these as an appetizer with tonight’s dinner! My usual grocery store didn’t have Old Bay seasoning, so I had to wait until I made it to another store. Super excited to give these a try. Calamari is super expensive and hard to find where I live so this might cure my craving for good seafood!

    • Hearts of palm
    • Lemon juice
    • Oil (for cooking)
    Batter:
    • 1 cup all purpose flour
    • 2 nori sheets (or other dry seaweed)
    • ½ tsp salt
    • ¼ tsp black pepper
    • ½ tsp Old Bay Seasoning (celery salt, paprika, other spices like cajiun)
    • 1 cup water
    Coating:
    • 1.5 cup panko bread crumbs
    Sauce:
    • 2 tbsp vegan mayonnaise
    • 1 tsp capers
    • 1 tsp gherkins
    • 1 tsp fresh parsley
    • 1 tsp lemon juice

    I just tried this recipe and it was fabulous! Thanks Veggie Rose for another great one :) I got my oil up to about 375 and that seemed to work good. My non vegan hubby loved them too. Stood there gobbling them up as they came out of the oil. By the time I was done cooking we had eaten them all! Side note, I tried this with onions too and it didn't work, batter slid off the slippery onion slices. But worked great with the palm hearts.

      With the onions try double dipping in flour before putting in the batter, it should help it to stick better.

      My only concern is that you used regular flour instead of spelt flour and Panko breadcrumbs are kind of on the junky vegan side.

      +Mz Nurú you can substitute with whatever you prefer...it is fried after all so it's not the healthiest food to begin with..but it's also not meant for everyday

      Mz Nurú You’ll notice some changes and more energy as you go. I never used to believe in vegan/vegetarian diets being beneficial, but I tried it back in May and when you supplement correctly, it is amazing how your body and mind changes for the better. I’ll never go back now!

    Never like calamari but I might try this, I only eat certain fish and vegetables, I'm working on cutting my dairy but honesty I only eat cheese, everything else is almond milk or soy milk based, I just can't find a true cheese replacement

    I loved the video. You explained everything down to a T. Your video wasnt too long or short. It was perfect. Kept my interest. All of your steps was explained perfectly..thank you.     How do u store the excess oil. Bc I don’t do alt of frying, & it’s expensive to use SO much oil?

      I let the oil cool down...strain it and save it in a mason jar for personal use

    I really love this recipe so thank you so much... it turned out way better than I thought. If you love fried seafood but want an alternative, try this recipe. I honestly think it is better than calamari because it's not overly chewy. Quick and easy too!

    This looks really great and I can’t wait to try it. My mom has been a vegan for about 45 yrs now, and I know she used to enjoy calamari. Just one suggestion. Loose the black nail polish. It doesn’t go well with food prep. Thank you again for this recipe.

    I try the vegan steak today. I didn’t really measure my salt, so was a little salty but WOW! I like. Only did 2, so I know to watch the salt. Seem like this could also be use to make a meatloaf or meatballs. I’m new to vegan lifestyle but I’m enjoying your recipes. Thanks so very much cuz I was just wondering what to eat. Not missing meat. Can’t wait to try this one cuz I just love 🍤 .
