The 40mm Ultron & 58mm Nokton are now my two most used lenses on my Nikon system. They are exceptional on film, DSLR & Z System, giving lovely seperation, tonality and an overall image quality that is difficult to define. Great video as usual 👍

I bought the Voightlander 40mm f/2 pancake lens several years ago, but it had a very restrictive close focus distance. When the company put out the more standard version, I bought one. It has lived on my D700 since I got it.
I love this lens. It is that Goldilocks focal length for those that can't decide between 35mm or 50mm... right in that sweet spot. The newer Voightlander has fixed the close focus problem since it has more built in extension with its longer focusing rack. Optically, there is no problem wide-open or stopped down. The color coded DOF scale really helps maximize zone or hyper focus, something that most AF lenses don't do easily.
I bought the 40mm because of my positive experience with the Voightlander 58mm f/1.4 which is in the same classic Nikkor style. I would have loved to have both of these lenses back in my film days on my F3.

I use both those lenses on my F3 - superb with it (and with film in general).

Just got my copy today and gotta say from the few test shots I took I'm thoroughly pleased. Especially the fit and finish is something to behold. They DO actually make them like they used to - just gotta search for it

I still remember and miss the excellent Nikkor 35 mm f2 which I had purchased second hand for my Nikon FM 2 and then I used it with F3 also. It was a beautiful lens, very solidly built and had excellent optics. But perhaps not being weather sealed, fungus settled into it and etched the glass also. I had to get it cleaned but it lost its mojo, if I can use this term, that had made it capture stunning pictures. From the similar stable, my 55mm micro Nikkor is still working and despite some specks of dust in it, it still retains its magic in capturing wonderful close ups. Such Nikon work horses, I believe, are a thing of the past. The speed at which technology is changing reinventing consumer preferences in the process, it doesn’t seem possible that any camera company would make lenses that would last the user’s life time to be passed on the next generation as a heirloom.

I started using the 40mm f2 Z lens, and enjoyed the focal length. I figure this will be my next lens for my D850, and all my film cameras!

Pretty good lens the Voigtlander on my D800 but wish the Nikon could use focus peaking like Fujifilm. Nails focus more reliably than the green dot.

Thanks for the video. I just ordered one from a Canadian dealer (for warranty purposes). I cannot wait to try it with some black and white film on my Nikon FM3a and F2A!

I’m a big fan of your comparison videos, thanks! I have and love my Voightlander 40mm f2 and I traded in my Nikkor 35mm f1.4 at Grays, so this was an especially sweet video for me...

The Voighlander 40mm has been my No 1 choice for every day shooting for almost 10 years, since I got myself a Df...
I also have the original macro extra front lens attachment that is as excellent as the main lens. A watch out for this lens is flare.

I also have the original pancake version with the separate close up lens. I always was bumping up against that close focus distance and found it inconvenient to stop and screw in the close-up lens, if I even had it with me.
This newer version is terrific. Ergonomically, the extra size really fits the hand nicely. And the larger lens barrel allows for more extension, so the close up distance is much tighter.
I took a chance and after getting the newer lens, my original pancake version has sat unused. I have zero regrets buying the current version.

@@albertsmith9315 indeed it has its quirkinesses, and although I haven’t tested it the new version must be better, designed for newer high megapixel bodies. My love for the older is from the pancake size and optics design.

I use my SL I version quite a lot since 2002, it was also nice on DX. IMHO It's not suitable for IR photography due to hot spots or astro due to high coma levels.

Hi. Its amazing, what sharp pics you guys get with the 35/1.4ai-s nikkor AND that you declare it as a neutral lens. My copy is defenitely not neutral: it changes its colour saturation from orange-looking skin tones wide open to more neutral from f2.8 on. Open the pictures look, as if you used a fuji velvia50 for Portraits instead of a kodak portra 160 for example. Amazingly, my nikkor 35/1.4ai-s did a good job on my d90 crop digital cam. I think, its not a bad lense (or is mine a bad one?), but you made me very corious at the voigtlaender. The 35 nikkor makes flat dull pictures, compared to my zeiss 25mm f2,8 - which gives great colours. I cant really afford a zeiss 35/2 so I‘ll try ghe Voigtlaender! Thx for the great vid. (Btw: Countryside looks great at your place!)

One of my favorite knock-around lenses is the old 28-50 f3.5 from 1984. It's tiny. Is a constant aperture. Has the mild micro capability, and is unobtrusive.

What do people think of the 35mm f/2 AF-D ?

  • @davidgifford8112
    @davidgifford8112 2 года назад

Was never fond of the 35mm in 35mm full frame, as Anton remarked there seems to a noticeable barrel effect. Ironically discovered 40-42mm when playing with old 35mm cameras and found it both a little more versatile and pleasing than 50mm. On APC cameras I’ve taken to using its equivalent (27-28mm) as a walk around rather than a zoom, I like it’s smaller and faster.

You could've compared it to the Z 40 f2 as well! 😁 Would be curious to see the difference because I didn't particularly like the Z 40 f2. It was okay, but it was lacking something I felt.

I have this very lens, beautifully made. However, on a full frame 24.6mm x 36mm sensor, mine does have a small fault - on 'infinity' focus, the left edges are noteably softer than the middle and right hand side at f4 .. f5.6. Of course at f8 and smaller apertures it gets better. I suspect this is down to small production variations, it must surely happen?

Interesting, we tested 2 samples, a loan lens from Voigtlander and Konstantin's own lens. None of them had that issue. Could be a one off thing.

@@graysofwestminster Thanks for the reply, didn't expect that. I've only just noticed this softness this morning, however, maybe I've jump the gun here? - I've just tested this on my old Canon 5D (MK1, with adaptor) and ....... no 'softness' issues!?! Perhaps then, there's an issue with my Nikon D700?
Apologies for the appaarent error on my behalf. I won't update, as I ought to test fully.

I love the Voigtlander 40mm f/2 Ultron (also the 58mm 1.4 Nokton). It's my go-to walkaround lens for my Nikon film bodies and it feels so nice to use. Such a great focal length. Something about that lens is very flattering to people too. I think I recognise that egg cupboard - is it at Outwood?

Will pass on the Voigtländer 40mm 2.0, maybe the 58mm 1.4 is a good one to go with the 125mm 2.5 Macro.
Too bad the 58mm 1.4 doesn’t use aspherical elements or special glass, like the 40mm 2.0 and 90mm 2.8 respectively.
