I'm surprised to hear you say that the lens only becomes 'usable' at f/2.8 - I have this lens and on the Z8, it's absolutely razor sharp corner to corner from f/2.
I like the feel and look of photos created by the Voigtlander lens. My 58 f/1.4 and 40 f/2 are the only lens I didn’t sell when I sold off my Nikon DSLR gear to go mirrorless. It’s good that they are making Z mount versions now, once they have the focal lengths I want, I’ll part with those 2.
I’ve been waiting for this review as I’ve had this lens for a few months and I absolutely love it, indeed the Z7 with this lens has replaced my X100V as my walk around d set up. Being chipped the focus square turns green when in focus which makes manual focus really easy. Yes, it’s a little slower than an autofocus lens (except when zone focusing), but it help you to focus on being creative. Highly recommended!
The Voightlander lens for the Nikon Z mount has electric connections that will help you to manually focus, I have a 40mm f1.2 and 15mm f4.5 for the Nikon ZF and the red focus square turns green when it has acquired focus, it also sends aperture information and the focal length of the lens, now very few manual focus lens have this feature, it depends on the camera you are using and the lens manufacturer but it looks as though the new Voightlander lenses have the electric connections that will allow you to confirm your focus.
Hi both, a good and useful conclusion at the end 👏. I think autofocus results in too many non-keepers (quick snaps) whilst manual focus demands a bit more thinking, and provides a higher % keepers. More photo immersement & enjoyment too.
I really like the way this lens looks on the Z full frame bodies haha but I like how its a manual lens that makes you slow down and think more and the the lens has character which I like. But I don't know if I can justify the price when I can get a used 35 1.8 S for half the price 😬
I like my Macro APO Lanthar 125mm 2.5 SL, but doesn’t have a no moving ring to grab it when changing lenses. It’s similar to the APO Sonnar 2/135 and Makro Planar 2/100, though the Zeiss are a bit better built than Voigtlander. Was thinking about the APO Scopar 90mm 2.8 SLIIs just don’t like the slow aperture. Another interesting lens is the Nokton 58mm 1.4 SLIIs, however it seem doesn’t use special glass or aspherical elements and isn’t well corrected. It’s definitely a good thing that a well respected brand like Voigtlander has accepted to make lenses for the Z-mount.
Hello, I totally agree with you. The Vogtlaender gives that certain drive that I enjoy when I take photographs. I find the bouquet more appealing than the Nikon Z 35mm 1.8, for example. I also have the Zeiss Milvus, which is 18 mm and I like that a lot. I'll take a closer look at the Vogtlaender.
When you said focus breathing around 2:40, did you mean field curvature? I might be wrong, but I thought focus breathing meant when an AF lens goes in and out of focus while finding focus. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!
The optical image quality of the Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0 Aspherical are second to none ! Voigtländer improved the Lens design, so it is a bit better than the Leica version. On a 61 megapixels Camera like SONY A7RV you really see how good it is.
Never thought I'd say this, but I think I need a 35 prime. I'd go with Nikon's 1.8, but I love seeing all these great 3rd party options become available. Have you guys reviewed the Laowa (Venus Optics) lineup? They offer some amazing 2.0x macros, and some nice wides. Excellent quality and very fair price point.
Guys, do you know where this lens can be ordered in Europe? I cannot find it anywhere 😢 if you know a retailer or website, please share. I checked Amazon, but I can only find the DX 1.4 version.
It’s rated APO, must be well corrected for CA and bokeh fringing. For micro contrast, three dimensionality and bokeh who knows. Built quality is probably similar.

The 58mm f1.4 is a magically lens. It’s created some of my most dreamiest photos from portraits to flower photos. Incredible lens
I agree! I just sold the 40 f2 after getting the Z 40 f1.2. Like the results I’m getting with it.

Love Voightlander, classic color, solid structure, it reminds me of Nikon AIS lenses but modern.
Becky and Konstantin - great video with lots of good info and quality images. Impressive and well done.
I would love to use some of these non-Nikon lenses; however, I no longer trust my own vision (due to age and onset of cataracts) with manual focusing.
I’m in the same boat; getting older and eyes don’t see as well. It’s depressing but I manage still with my auto focus lenses
I like that the Zf has subject detection in manual focusing, you can then zoom in and get the green indicator to let you know when you’re in focus.
Yep, I have a few manual lenses that are great; just too hard to focus

I have the 50 f2 and absolutely love it.... the 35mm is on my wish list. Thanks for the review.

The Voigtländer are much higher quality and will last your lifetime !
Thanks for the nice video 😊 How do you see if the a subject is 100% in focus? Is there a “rangefinder” help in the lens?

How does it compare to the 35 1.2 VM mount version III adapted on Nikon Z?
The Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0 Aspherical are second to none !
Great video. Remember, you can always manual focus with an autofocus len

Would be a fantastic look on a FF retro Z
Reading your comment 1 year later: It’s here the Zf, the camera you already saw coming?

Very nice, but it does look longer than a Nikkor 35mm f2 with the FTZ2 attached.
IMO the comparison photos towards the end are too different. The Voightlander image has many more components to give a 3D feel.
There's definitely more character to this lens than most modern lenses. I would take character over super sharp over corrected lenses.
I’d actually say the voigtlander is sharper. It’s made by Cosina in Japan who have been making zeiss m lenses for a while
I'm glad someone agrees with me on the Z 35 1.8 good by all measure, but, that's kind of it. I find it kind of good but lifeless.
Thanks!
Thank you very much!
Another excellent video

Check out Foto Erhardt.
I wonder how this one compares to the Zeiss Distagon f2.

Sorry but this lens is very sharp even wide open thats why it is an apo lens
but you do get a lot of character yes
I want all the Voigtlander Z lenses, plus throw in a few F mount Nokton beauties too….now there is that pesky thing called money to sort out!
I'm not a fan of the 35mm focal length.
I would prefer the 40mm f2 Z lens - at least its usable wide open...🦘
