Hey Mark thank you so much for turning me on to the song "In Your Face". I never knew this song existed until today. I listened to it once, and now I can't stop listening to it . I agree with you that Ace sounds great on it, the vocal delivery is perfect. Gene really nailed it with the lyrics, they suit Ace to a tee..." I know I've always gone too far, but I've been safe on my guitar". Going to listen to your other recommendations as well. Great episode as always Three Sides😊
I remember in '98 buying the Psycho Circus video cassette with the CD in the Watertown, NY mall (I was based at Fort Drum at the time). I pulled out the CD immediately and played it in my pickup on the way home and was blown away by "In Your Face" and I was puzzled why it wasn't included on the album (IIRC, I think read it was included in the Japanese release).
Thumbs up from me!! AEROSMITH ALERT ⚠️ in the 93rd minute!!! Thanks for the shout out Mark!! Into The Void is awesome and love that it is on Psycho Circus!!! Blue Kool-Aid Drinker. Peace out from the Southern Tip of Vancouver Island, B.C. Canada.
Michael and Mark, I really appreciated this show during this last half-of-the month for this EOTR World Tour journey we've all been on together! With your behind-the-scenes insights into KISS's past, and your optimistic foresight for all of us here to look forward to in the near future, you have made this (somewhat) emotional (at times) road into a smoother path down unchartered territory. That's a big deal to me. Michael, I also listened to the "entire" interview you recorded with Bruce Fairbairn - more than twenty-four years ago! Wow! Honestly though, I had to listen to it in stages over a four-day stretch in order to digest it's "full potential." And even though I felt that Bruce was trying very hard to tow the company line, so many of his remarks about the band, in general, just rubbed me the wrong way (ie. hit "Pause" then "Play" more tomorrow). As you and Mark discussed during this show prior to the interview, the BS in this interview by BF was thick and just seem to ooze out at every opportunity. Nonetheless, I would like to let you know how refreshing your interview style (ask fewer, but direct, questions - leaving more time for the interviewee to expound on his answers) really allowed us to get more to those curiosities and mysteries of minutia from BF about KISS and each band member themselves! Your respect towards Mr Fairbairn, and the professionalism you brought to this interview, made me want to continue coming back to hear the rest of the program! I have to hand it to you, you nailed this one! (...24 years ago mind you!). Bravo!! ...and, as a loyal "Three Sides of the Coin" longtime subscriber, many thanks for this fun and refreshing EOTR treat!!! ...AlexinDallasTX
Hello guys. I enjoyed you talking about all of the shows you have attended. Have either of you seen KISS in Erie, Pa? I was at the 2000 Farewell show and have always wanted to find footage of it. That is one where there does not seem to be anything available. They played at the Erie County Fieldhouse in 75 and 76. They came in 2017 too I believe it was. Keep up the great work.
This is such an interesting document in time and great job in presenting it with context, perspective and all of Mark’s scholarly like commentary to precede the interview with Bruce. As you discussed tribute bands, bands with minimal original members, etc it always makes me think more conceptually about our current time and age and the music we all came up with. It’s all up for discussion and interpretation of how it continues to be presented. I imagine similar scholarship took place in the Classical music era as those creators, ie: Bach, Mozart, Tchaikovsky began to pass and that music was to become canonized through time. A similar window of time is upon us again with the music we came up with and I feel Three Sides contributes in mostly a positive and meaningful part of these discussions.
Mark I love the idea of creating your own version of psycho circus . I had one that a long time ago and I thought my version was better than theirs. Your version of psycho with the additions of sister and a pete vocal on sweet and dirty love - I’m on board with. I would have to add that to my ideal version
Psycho Circus might as well have been Sonic Boom with special guests. A Kiss facsimile where Peter and Ace made a guest appearance. You can honestly say there was no Kiss reunion album. There was a Kiss reunion single; "Into the Void". In one of Kiss's biographies ("Behind the Mask"?) the engineer from the PC sessions talks about himself, Fairburn, and Simmons and Stanley finding Ace's song ideas laughable, and supposedly having to go out in the hallway to laugh at him behind his back. Yet many fans think Into the Void was the best song on the record. Since that time Ace has written recorded and released numerous albums that have been well received by fans, while Kiss has stopped recording new material because of poor reception to new materail from them. There's something funny there, but it isn't Ace's songs. 😊
I wouldn’t drop into the void that and the title track sound most classic kiss. I agree I finally found my way should of definitely been dropped. I remember in interviews Paul saying he would never wanna do a son of Beth or another elder album,to me that’s what it sounds like,a son of Beth that could have been on the elder part 2 lol I love the song sister but as you mentioned the drumming isn’t peter style and it sounds too much like an ace solo song so instead I would have used an ace song that is one of my favorites that most fans don’t know cause it got lost and was waisted being used on an Ace tribute album called “Take me to the city” That would have been amazing on psycho cause it so kiss like and more kiss fans would have heard it. Similarly w peter having a rocker I would have put a song called “Bad Attitude “ it’s one of his most kiss sounding songs and many don’t know it cause it’s on one of peters solo albums.
I remember when I first heard the song Psycho circus on the radio when it was released, a little over 2 minutes into the song I knew that Peter Criss didn’t play the drum track
Even tho “within” is clearly a left over from COS I still for some reason think it has more of a “makeup and demon” feel rather than COS which to me has a more just dark Gene sound. This could be because as a little kid I heard psycho circus before I ever heard any songs from revenge or carnival of souls tho
Fairbairn was talking about Peter just like he was involved in the process of creation. Peter didn't even play on the album, except on ''Into The Void''. Kevin Valentine, who also performed on ''Hot In The Shade' and ''Revenge'', was recruited by Fairbairn to play drums!
Mark is spot on about 'It's My Life'. If that song would have been on' Creatures' it wou7ld have helped the album (and subsequent tour) out in a big way
If a classic band with no original members is worth seeing just because the songs are so good, why not just see a good tribute version of the band for less money? It’s pretty much the same thing. That said, I wouldn’t mind seeing the no original member Lynyrd Skynyrd.
I’m looking forward to seeing a KISS tribute band in December. They’re coming to a small town I live in all the way down in southern illinois, the closest the real kiss will come is St. Louis and that’s still a lot of gas money to a person like me
I've never been a fan of what if and second guess anything. So I think Psycho-Circus is fine as it is. However I could easily do without You Wanted The Best, it's below average in my opinion. It's My Life would've been much better. As for the rest I have no problem at all with them.
Into The void is amazing. There is no way you take that song off the album and it's the only song that they all four played on. It was the only song that sounded like them. But the other ones I agree with I would remove within, Dreaming, and Journey. I would have replaced those songs with in your face another Ace song, Body and Soul, and I do think you have an interesting point about Peter Criss singing Genes song. However we would also need another classical sounding Gene song I just don't think we are one gets it I think that is more of babies that should have been the new Peter song! hey!
45:30 - 45:55 - This is exactly why I don't like this album. It was a huge let-down. "The First Album with the Original Line-Up" - I imagined the Love Gun cover, a Casablanca label - even if Casablanca no longer exists, the label design was still iconic - it was a completely bogus KISS album, they knew it, and we can hear it. This is why I hate it.
@@MichaelBrandvold Admittedly, I was beginning to think I was wrong while listening to the interview. It was exactly the opposite of all the stories I'd heard about the making of the album. No point in going into all the trashing and back-biting I read about, but what he himself was saying about Ace and Peter was completely the opposite of what I'd read about all these years, and what I was going by when I switched this on earlier. I'm going to give the album another spin.
Well, Psycho Circus is probably my least favorite KISS album. While I totally understand that whole concept of it was a thank you to the fans, I just feel like it's....cheesy. Best songs for me are Psycho Circus, Into The Void, and Dreamin'.
I don't listen to PC much, there could have been much better songs on the album. I always skip Into the void and the ballad and don't really like the production. It's my life should have been on the album with maybe Peter on vocals.

That and Sweet and Dirty Love would have improved the album.

The single fact of having a recorded interview with the mighty Bruce Fairbairn is fantastic. One of the greatest producers of all time in my book.
I agree mark.
Those would be the same songs that I would take out and put in the ones that you mentioned.
Love the Podcast
Your interview was great! Not afraid to ask him some tough questions. We’ll done!

where are those tracks aside from Body & Soul - anything left over nearly completed or song titles
Heavens to Jendel!! What a treat, thanks for sharing guys!!!
Our pleasure!
GREAT show! To me, Bruce seemed like he was being very honest (especially his 'no comment' reply when asked about ghost musicians).
I lost interest in the album when I found out that it really wasnt a reunion album. Still, it has very cool moments.

Hey Mark, Im seeing Metal Church in about 4 weeks here in Adelaide Australia! Represent :-)
I remember when I first heard the song Psycho circus on the radio when it was released, a little over 2 minutes into the song I knew that Peter Criss didn’t play the drum track
Hey Michael and Mark, did any of you guys read the Pyro Guy's book, just curious. I haven't watched that station fire episode yet,a afraid to.

Nobody better say anything about peters drumming, he was a monster, he wore that drumset out. Peter Ace were the sound of Kiss.
In the 70s yes. In 1998, nope.
Yes in the 70's@@MichaelBrandvold

3 gene songs on an album has always been much MORE than enough.

It's the end of the road not the sea plenty of water and cruises?
lol at the comment about Gene's "surprises". There was nothing.

SO CAL Sighting of two of the "sides" last Friday....
With out Peter Criss the real cat man, they might have not have made it, just saying.

Not bogus at all. “We” didn’t hear it, you did. Speak for yourself.
