Great book. A Fantastic work we would have gone nuts for in 1981, although it would never have been possible then to reveal what you uncovered and complied.
Ordered the book while I was watching. Julian and Martin Popoff are by far my fave rock writers. If Mass Kissteria is half as good his Elder book, it will be….MAGIC! It’s the joke that keeps on giving 😂
Ordered Julian's book for myself for Christmas and can't wait to read it! Thanks 3 Sides and Julian. The only two KISS podcasts I listen to are 3 Sides and KISS FAQ.
I personally never ever cared if any people around me liked the music I listen to. If I like KISS I enjoy it and if I like ABBA I enjoy it. Why do you have to go around and look for support in your interests? Feels to me that it comes down to self-esteem issues. Oh, and I don't support your plea for digital formats of music or books - I continue buying CDs and physical hardcover books and all that Kindle/ebook will never ever matter to me personally. Thanks to Mr. Gill for coming up with amazing KISS books all the time!
That's a great question to ask. I almost wonder if it's just the way things are now. Everybody's always looking for someone to prop up their opinion of something. It seems a lot of people can't think for themselves anymore or at least that's what i see.
We used to hang out at the back of my / our school (Corpus Christi school, Buffalo, NY) and THE DAY, I had an article from our local newspaper, The Buffalo News, stating (at the time) that KISS was breaking up and going to telease solo albums showing them with half makeup half non makeup. I was punching with my bare fists against the school walls wailing "No No No".
So great that Julian and his amazing new book (btw I have all of his Kissbooks, yes even all the mini-tour-bookversions) were headlining this podcast. Great episode, with tons of info. Unmasked is sùch an essential Kissalbum for me. The album is the blueprint of my youth.. getting into Kiss with Dynasty and the Sure Know Something video… and then came Unmasked, a perfect pop/rockalbum imho, with amazing drums by mr. Fig, an album with a real ‘summerish’ feel, and attached to my childhood memories… lipsynching Kiss at school.. getting out my shell as a frightened young kid and feeling Kiss as a lifeline… such great memories. I was looking forward to this book so much!
A lot of the best stories about bands are when they're faced with challenges, and 1980-1984 definitely had a LOT of challenges going, and finally seemed to settle out when Bruce joined and KISS entered the home video market. It'll be interesting to read this because it ties into the road leading to "Killers", and the freefall Casablanca was in (which "Spinning Gold" barely mentioned, only that Neil started Boardwalk and died soon after). Reading memos and contracts more have bored and confused us as kids, but as longtime fans, can shine a million watt light on problems going on in a band and all kinds of drama (and sometimes put the hair on your arms on end like a suspense novel).
Just started listening and after 12 minutes, I bought the book & it'll be at my house on Monday. Can't wait to read more about my favorite era of KISS. I listen to Unmasked at least a few times a year. I had Dynasty & Unmasked on 8-track and I always hear the fade-out -CLICK - fade-in during the songs that were split in the 8-track format. I am 53.
I just finished reading Mass Kissteria. Another great book from Julian! I also have his Solo Albums book, Odyssey, Kiss On Tour 73-83 and the Aerosmith On Tour book. All great books and very informative. As for something to cover in the next book, I think the period between 83-84, when they took the make-up off and went through 3 different guitarists in a year would be interesting to read about. That's also when Gene started to wander into the Hollywood scene. Also, the period in 1991-92, when Eric Carr was sick/died & the making of Revenge might make for an interesting read also.
You know, that 1983 period, was the first thing that came to my mind too. Starting at the end of the Creatures tour. With how great we know Julian’s books are, would make fascinating reading.
I was introduced to Kiss by my sister when I was 5, when Dynasty was released here in Australia. I remember during that time the band was just everywhere. On TV in the paper, in magazines. Iron on transfers in the paper, ice blocks, trading cards etc. I never got to go to the 1980 concert unfortunately. Was great period in my life and for the band.
I would love to have been in your country during that period of time to see the height of popularity like that. There was nothing like that in the United states even though they were very popular
@@tommysommers6327 Thanks for replying Tommy. Certainly was an amazing period. Would have been good if you could have experienced it as well. Wish i was a little older and could have attended the concert. Think tickets were like $13.50 and it was the most expensive concert to come to Australia at the time i think i read. Thant's just crazy. I wish i still had some of the items that were released back then. The only item i still have is an Ace Frehley t shirt i wore in 1980. Take care mate.
Ironically enough, I loved "Unmasked" when I bought it as a youngster and tracks like "Is That You"(?) aren't exactly without some pump. "Talk To Me" is one of my favorite Ace songs of all time to this day, and I'm somewhat surprised that a modern country band hasn't picked up on what a great crossover it would be.
Loved this!!! If there was one book I could get Julian to write it would be about the Vinnie Vincent era of Kiss. I find this particular time to be most intriguing.
It's strange that Kiss was in such decline in popularity back in the US after Dynasty. I was around 5 years old in 1980 when i was introduced to Kiss music from a friend, and Kiss was everywhere here in Norway. There was tons posters and magazines on a weekly basis that covered them, we even got collectable picture cards. Kiss was huge here, they even managed to stay relevant during the Elder period. Both Killers and Creatures was popular as well i remember. Although news didn't travel as fast like today, so many of us was shocked when suddenly Vinnie Vincent appeared on the front of some magazine instead of Ace in early 83 😆
I think it takes time for bands to spread around the world. By the time they were cooling off here they were probably just gaining momentum in your country. Very interesting though
An interesting topic for Julian’s next book is a chronological look at every band that opened for Kiss including bios before, during & after their Kiss tour experience, band quotes, tour dates, set lists, album support for that tour, highlights & lowlights, etc, etc.
Tommy and Michael, you both had real great questions about what and how we all viewed and heard Music in that first couple of years in the 80's. I remember as a drummer and music lover in those years not hating KISS but starting to look for and listen to other bands [some that had come out in 70's and weren't even around anymore by 1980 to 1982] like BTO and Black Oak Arkansas, early Alice Cooper, Nazareth, UFO, Van Halen, Montrose, Black Sabbath, Cheap Trick, Ozzy, Aerosmith too. Then the NWOBHM came in with Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Saxon and the Biggest hitter to KISS the Aussie band AC/DC hit it with not one but Three in the early 80's Back in Black, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap and For those About to Rock We Salute You. Those Three AC/DC albums spelled Danger to KISS and there was no way for KISS to answer back until Creatures of the Night and by then most people had given up on KISS being able to hold their own against the "Newer" Rock that was coming out. I remember when Creatures of the Night came out and my good friend and fellow KISS fan getting the album and playing it for me, he was all "Yes KISS is Back just listen to this"!!! I just looked at him and said Yeah this is a Great Album; but man KISS is Done just look at the last three albums, are they gonna do the next two like this one or will they just go back to what they did on those three albums.
I just started a topic on kiss faq about this very topic. The interesting thing is the dichotomy between what KISS (a band that was at a major crossroads after being on top of the world) and the NWOBHM that was beginning to take over were doing. I like KISS’ output during that time, they had matured as songwriters and took a pop angle. Now contrast that with Judas Priest or Ozzy Osbourne in 1980-81. They were diametrically opposed to what KISS was doing, but both are valid. Nice job Julian.
Mass Kissteria has a pretty cool cover, During 1980-1981 KISS was pretty big in my little world here in Europe. In 1982 things slowed down and by 1983 was hardly on TV or in music magazines and I was more into pop music. But you are right, it's interesting to find out what went on in and aoround the band durin' these transitional years.
Such an iconic era for Kiss, I was a teenager when they toured Australia in 1980. It was like seeing living Gods walking the earth. It was completely incredible. I remember buying some Kiss showbags at a gas station for 50 cents each, my father told me I was wasting money so I could only but three for a buck and a half, so I got the Ace, Eric and Gene showbags. Recently I sold them on eBay and scored almost a thousand dollars for the Ace and Eric items. The Gene showbag only fetched about fifty bucks. But yeah, dad, you knew best...... Bought the book almost immediately watching the video! Love the "Larger Than Life" overweight tribute line!
Shandi was a big hit around the world, except for the US. It's a great song, with this swirling guitar sound that gives it wings. Unmasked went Gold, alot of us bought it, so it wasn't a zero, simply a moderate seller in the US, and a big hit abroad. That's the truth.....It's tight and rhythmic at times, like Is That You? and Tomorrow.....try another listen...reminder: Kiss hit the cover of People in 1980, huge publicity...
I enjoy the dirty secrets far more than the actual band, since Revenge. A record company advance is more like a credit card cash advance. That is to be paid back, WITH INTEREST, often at well over 20%. It’s funny how Gene is such a business man- yet considering the soaring heights of the late 70’s, he was in financial straights until the reunion. Everything post 79 has been a cash grab for him. At least Paul kept trying. I’ll buy the book. Good interview!
I saw the Peter Criss Alliance in Cadillac Michigan in 1983. He made no mention of KISS- he just said I guess I looked a little different the last time I was here. The only KISS song he played was Beth. I got to meet him afterwards and got an autograph
Does the author of the book know a french radio interview of Kiss in Paris sept 27 1980 ? It's very interesting Gene says that Kiss music was going to get louder heavier and meaner... They were obviously under the shock of NWBHM

I like Pete, but 'Out of Control' is really not a very good album overall. It was never going to be a threat, even to "Unmasked."
The promotion job was terrible and never toured his first two solo albums. He could have gone on tour as a support act for "yacht rock" bands or even opening for Rod Stewart - Carmine Appice might have even helped him out with a short run of east coast dates. I think he tried to tour in the mid-80s but I don't think he did any kind of real touring.

Don Henley also comes to mind - the Eagles were pretty much over, he did great with the MTV crowd, and the Eagles even had to play "Boys Of Summer" when they reunited. Phil never did his solo stuff with Genesis. Dave Grohl was supposedly going to be fired from Nirvana so I think Foo Fighters would have happened (and been bigger than Nirvana). It took Dave a few albums and music videos to get to arena level sold out shows but he would have gotten there.
I dont hate. I dont really like the word nor concept of hate. BUT.... If i hate anything, it's the business...and i learned from Alice Cooper, that it is "shiow" and "business". Alices's manager Shep Gordon lacked the skreviness!
thats ah no brainer.. what happened to them was success. period. all the other nonsense all germinated from that. success.. familiar story. names, dates, rap sheets may change but its typically the same story.

All over after 81
Their success never transferred to video which cost them money, exposure & more sales 🤷♂
I sold my KISS Colorforms.
I dont hate. I dont really like the word nor concept of hate. BUT.... If i hate anything, it's the business...and i learned from Alice Cooper, that it is "shiow" and "business". Alices's manager Shep Gordon lacked the skreviness!
I don't care if it's folded in half.......that's what she said.
I think I'm gonna go binge on some DDT rat poison.
Secret trips to rehab...
One thing that i dont understand is how you become a KISS fan in 1985 ? By then they were complete shit LOL
One thing I dont understand is why do you fuckn care when someone became a fan and what they like. God knows your taste isn’t perfect.
thats ah no brainer.. what happened to them was success. period. all the other nonsense all germinated from that. success.. familiar story. names, dates, rap sheets may change but its typically the same story.
