Whoever edited the sound of this video needs a lesson from her
The lady who told Maynard to take a lap.
such a dope story!
And hung Serj upside down!
😂😂😂
Which song was it, though???
@@bluesdealer i know right
This is the gold standard, and Sylvia really under sells herself here. The most important role of being a music producer has nothing to do with music. It is being able to read people, understand their limits... know their talent windows.. pick up on vibes... know when to just shut it down. The music world needs much more of this.
Yeah, but if you can't mix for shit, then who fucking cares if you can read people right
Where am I saying you dont have to be able to mix? Fuck, of course you have to be able to mix.
@@hazysativa3045 no you dont. lots of producers send stuff away to be mixed
@@mattiemclean9882 Thats a mixdown, post recording. You need to be able to mix during the recording process, no debate. Whats the point trying to mix something thats clipping and/or under signal?!?
@@hazysativa3045 yeah, especially with all of the expensive ass gear. Use it.
She seems like a pretty chill down to earth producer compared to some of the douches I've seen. But she is a legend.
probably don't want her see at work. She wants results and will get them as a producer.
i agree! legendary as fuqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq
💯🥃
Wait what, I wasn't subscribed to Silvia Massy, what is wrong with my life :,D I've seen perhaps hundreds of her videos so far, interviews from other channels, I never tough to look up if she had her own channel. Thank you Sylvia for being who you are.
With the kindest regards.
I want to work with this producer some day. This is my end game goal. Sylvia rules.
I've been browsing loads of mixer/producer channels soaking up ideas for my own creative enterprise in songs and production, but I love your approach, your quirks and your ongoing creative zest. Totally inspirational, different, exciting, challenging, unorthodox, artistic and beautiful. Break the mould, take risks and keep going, it's fantastic. Thank you x
Wow she recorded Undertow and Systems debut record! She is amazing!
Do you mean Tool?
@@JoJo-zd2kr well, Undertow is Tool's debut, and SOAD debuted with a self-titled album. Maybe OP though it was strange to write a sentence as long as this one to explain it :D
@@RomanBellicTaxi
Opiate is TOOL’s debut. She did that one, too.
It was amazing working with you, dear Sylvia!💚
so beautiful and talented!!! SYLVIA MASSY WE SPEAK YOUR NAME
>under toe
yeah no shit
Sylvia I love you,
you're so inspring and really really talented.
That's the right approach on how you can truly be a successful producer.
Thank you for this video, please keep doing video like this one :)
“I want them to feel comfortable making mistakes”
*makes mistake*
“5 laps around the block. Go.” 😂
What's the song at 2:20?? tnx. Great Video!
Interesting look into a music producer's role.
Great advice and interesting stories; thank you : -)
It's a dream of mine to work with her.
Yup. The primary role of a Record Producer is to direct and oversee record making process of a Song to its final mix as a Producer is comparable to a director in a movie. In Hip Hop, R&R, Pop genres, it's often combining both the Record Producer role that controls the recording sessions and a Programmer or Composer that composes the musical track such as Dr. Dre, Timbaland, Scott Storch, Pharrell Williams and Rodeny Jerkins. They are technically called *Producer / Songwriter's.* Most modern Records Producer's are Hybrid Producer's these days that wears two or more hats. You see a lot of *Producer / Engineer* combos too.
Having watched a few YT vids about Sylvia, I have decided up on 3 options: 1. Marriage proposal 2. Marriage proposal with 50/50 royalty split. 3. Marriage proposal with her keeping 100% royalties. You can tell I'm grinning right now, can't you :O) But actually totally serious.... What a lovely, clever, adventurous talented woman...
Hands down... the coolest chick in the music industry.
3:14 anybody know what song? Maybe even what part?
I’m gonna guess at the end of Bottom
Great producer, lovely lady of sound Sylvia Massy.
Massy 2020.
If your not good with people, forget about being a producer. Twiddling knobs is just the beginning. You have to be a psychologist, a motivational speaker, a disciplinarian all while trying to coax the best performance out of 4 or five musicians, all of whom can be very moody and mercurial individuals.
Great vid. Thanks!
can someone please tell me what the song is that they play in the intro and outro?
ask siri
I love some Sylvia knowledge!
Ty for being a link in the chain that gave us opiate & undertow Mrs Massy💖✌
the queen of audio engineer!!!
''She's a poem written in the most beautiful body language.''-Saul Bellow
beautiful
Musician: Plays music. Producer: Knows how to record a song. It's as different as comparing a butcher and a cook. Two trades for the same objective
Could do without the music in the background
agreed
Yeah, music on a video about music and music production. Totally out of place.
@@Syklonus it's mixed terribly, the irony is quite delicious indeed
What u dont like noise?
Obviously Sylvia didn't mix the video LOL
She worked with the Sea Hags? Wow, I learn something new every day
She could’ve worked with Kurt Cobain. Dang!! She’s blessed with great ears!
I could have worked with Kurt Cobain.... its about what you've done, not what you could've done
This was very insightful.
brilliant producer and i dare say an artist as much as the musicians. produce me Sylvia plz!
Awesome! Thank you Sylvia. Mark Bensette Aux Bois 🇨🇦.
Sylvia Massy is a babe! totally mind blowing.
Project Management for Artists ... 😉👍
This is great info for those artists that record themselves. When to stop.
Beautifully said !! Great stuff 🎶🤗🎸
Is Sylvia single ?
super cool
Love everything you said, Thanks for the video, Love from to Texas yo You, keep rocking!!!!
I still want her to mention or talk about her production on the "Machines of Loving Grace" album she did?
We must protect this woman at all costs
❤️
You making Maynard run around the block to scream makes you my favorite person of all time 😂
As a 40 uear player i made the same statement in 2007.
Who wants to be a producer as bad as I want to play? And The responce at the time was" ohhh their real expensive" then I said " if im gonna pay big money ill hire eddie kramer or bob ezrin!" that shutem up!
Im in shreveport the most artist jealousy town that ever was.
I just discovered you Sylvia. Where have you been all of my life.. Love this content.
beautifull sylvia and nothing else matters
Lots of love Sylvia
Gotta have the silliness behind the madness of a Mad professor...The world will never get the mind of an Electronic engineer of the future. I still love the Pickle powered sound trickle !!! And not only the submariners but the sub hunters know the acoustic secrets too !!! I'm just getting started too...And they had better take your knowledge to perspective the glowing pickle is an old idea brought back into the light... Literally...
One day I will work with you Sylvia. You are seriously the best.
2:50 I make my students do this. It works.
That part about kicking people out of the studio is very good advice.... I could have saved myself a lot of time if I dealt with immature band members and "friends" of the band by just telling them to beat it when they're not needed. It's like they don't see the sound engineer as someone doing a job of active listening.
Only their band is doing the work we merely run cables and press the record button in their minds.
1:52 that's right, that's the mentality to have when you know your shit.
My 25 yr old self being seduced by her and her audio
My 18 year old self is really attracted to her rn (I do have much respect for her tho)
Best explenation of role of music producer I heard. And as for ruling the roost, someone has to do it, no matter how big artist's personality and ego :)
love this!
best remark: you got to know when its finished. musician always wanna go on tinkering on their song. its true. when the prod says its done its done. ahem.
I sometimes have to kick myself out of the room when I'm recording, then I remember I'm recording myself.
I can't say I care very much for the bands she produces, but I always love to hear her talk.
That's a LOT of different genres you don't care-for.
u don't like PRINCE?? 🤦
@@TheBaconWizard I said bands, not genres. Just because I don't care for a band doesn't mean I don't care for a whole genre. However, I should have been clearer. I'm not familiar with every band she's worked with. I should have said that I usually don't care much for the more notable bands that I'm aware she's produced -- Tool, Powerman 5000, Sevendust -- although there are admittedly many bands in her discography that I don't know.
@@tommyaudio I like some Prince. I was speaking in general terms.
Yall saying the music is distracting dont know how to focus on more than one thing at a time 😂 you music is fine
Anyone know this fabled 5 lap scream of Maynard's?
Following
Interesting take on kicking people out that are in the way, in the moment. Those same people may be essential 10 minutes later. I do the same thing in group lessons like rock camps. I was never sure about it but it seemed to speed up the process. Nice to have it confirmed by a high level producer. I should have done it more when I was working in recording studios.
She’s simply fascinating
If I'm ever in a position to record at this level, I'm getting this lady. So much wisdom.
hahaha
all you need is money
This is gold.
That is putting it down the way it should be.
Would love to work with someone as creative, imaginative, and technologically literate as Sylvia. She is awesome!
It is inspiring to hear this woman speak so appropriately about the influence of a producer on each artist 🙏🏻
I mess around with personal home recordings and could watch your tips all day long. Huge respect, you're extremely inspirational and your paintings are bad ass too. I want one.
Power behind the throne right there ladies and gentleman.
Tool could have used you on the last album. Most of those songs drag on forever.
I think Tool never worked with her again because as Adam said "its not good when its done, its done when its good"
kunxv15 I guess they need to keep going on FI.
Most definitely smash.
Just pure awesomeness !!!
One of a kind 💯
I don't need a producer, I need Sylvia Massy
Undertow would never be as badass as it came to be, without Massy.
this woman is such an inspiration. Even if I'm not a fan of most of bands she produced, I love the work behind those songs and mostly what it's amazing is that they don't sound all the same, she captured the true sound of every band
interesting. I never thought about it this way before. She is like a Captain in the Army, and the mixer, and recording engineers are like the sergeants. Then come the band who are the privates who have to do what she says, but like a good leader, she helps them express themselves and do their job because she knows best. Very interesting indeed.
Sound city is a stone's throw from me. I want to meet the members from Tool Sylvia :)
Screw Tool I just wanna meet Sylvia.
Great Conversation, thank you.
Sylvia Massy your an inspiration love your work! teach me !!
System of an Upside Down
Disc Jockey, I haven't heard that in a whileeee
what a absolute legend
does someone knows whats the song at 2:23?
lmao making Maynard run around the block and piss him off to get the desired effect. Amazing
What song is that I wonder?
I love learning from the pro's!
Music totally distracting... isn't this supposed to be about music.
Its about getting the absolute best out of the musicians so that you can get music that represents the talents of the band. Its more than just music.
100 agree
I love how she sad "the singer gets sick" and i refuse to use Dee Esser on it
She's a rare breed. You lucky, lucky man.
subscribed.
Eveything she said in this video, is a 100% hit on the nail.
Sylvia married ?
ah that AKG D58 :)
i know women like this hate to hear it because they want to be known for their accomplishment but she is quite attractive
Goodbye headphone users at 2:25 . Great video, Sylvia!
