It's a shame she never produced a Sonic Youth album. Their unconventional, experimental sound with her unconventional experimental approach would've been amazing.
Or make an album on a $3k budget sans computer. Stanley Kubrick: Making a film is really just having the ability to buy stuff. Oh yeah, and all that world of knowledge ‘stuff’. NEBRASKA
@@higbyprigby9648 This comment is really really stupid. She's like, the person who's known for using the shittest stuff. She's made plenty of records spending less than $3k, because her bands play live.
admire her attitude towards recording, might have to adopt some o that. Also the comments about her not being economical - apparently she likes to use fairly budget mics. For example, she once recorded Billy Corgan and everyone in the session blind tested a variety of mics on his vocal ranging from mega expensive/hyped to a humble wee SM58 - the 58 won in that particular instance. So she's probably saving some money there towards her piano smashin fund...
I'll record a drumset on ISS when I get the chance. When the recording is finished I'll record a special FX for the outro: Drumset being sucked out into space trough airlock...maybe the Drummer will join for dramatic effect...depends on his performance :P
The "Speaker-As-A-Microphone" trick was first used by The Beatles while recording the 'Paperback Writer'/'Rain' single. Geoff Emerick almost got fired for doing that!
@Mindaugas Kaminskas All I want to see is the Waves Army Man Compressor. I can get most any sound I want, but I have yet to hear a plugin that sounds like her compressor.
So much fun and so inspirational. Can't stop watching these Sylvia Videos. OMG!!! I just realized I think I worked with her at Tower Records when I first moved to Hollywood!! I thought she looked familiar. Oh man now we have to work together.

Sylvia massy is a Great producer recorder and mixer of music 🌹 I love her pro studio and her job , and she is a very pretty woman too ;) Analog song is amazing!
The thing that sold Tool was Tool. The first record is a horrible sounding mix and that's why they never went back. Just like Zeppelin and Glynn Johns.
Sylvia is crazy! Crazy good!!! Love her free spirit and willingness to try it all. I play in a Country & Western dance band here in Las Vegas about as far from what she does with Tool and the rest as you can get but what she does and stands for transcends the musical style. Amazing. Come and produce us, we are ready. :)
@@nicholascowan1731 Steve is more methodical in his approach (complete sound insulation, traditional recording techniques, fully analog recording process). Sylvia is more experimental and unconventional
I wish I could have experimented more when I was working in a studio but my clients always had limited budgets so I had very little time for that sort of thing.
I'd love to see a collab with her & Andrew Huang. I feel like they have enough similarities in approach that they'd hit it off, but she could teach him so much about analogue stuff.
Whenever people talk microphones diagrams and things to do or not to do, I'm always kind of flabbergasted. Recording is pretty much only experimenting. My dad started recording during the mid-60's when the first Neumann came to French studios and they figured out how to use those new microphones at the time to record a certain tone of vocals that we later on called the "french touch". You had to figure ou everything. They only had plate reverbs and EQ, maybe compressor, but my dad never used one. The 24 tracks console he was using had to be custom-ordered by his boss because there wasn't a 24 tracks at the time... and if you plugged something the wrong way, it immediately fried on you. Oh and the noise floors were 10x higher than the most basic USB interface you could get... Today have all the tools in the world yet I find engineers to be so damn conservative. Refreshing to see this!
It's interesting because the piece she talks about, "Disgutipated" really isn't all that loud. What they did do was use those sounds as percussive elements which artistically brilliant and amazingly practical.
I want to be more creative with how I record stuff in the future. Another composer I like a lot, disasterpeace, attached a stethoscope to a microphone and recorded the blood in his veins to use as an ambient sound for one of the spookier tracks for a video game soundtrack he was working on. Shit like that is pretty cool.
Gotta have the silliness behind the madness of a Mad professor...The world will never get the mind of an Electronic engineer of the future. I still love the Pickle powered sound trickle !!!
I tried some of these things on my last session with some new clients. They're not coming back. I ended up eating the potatoes though...and I suppose that's what matters. Inspiration!
yeah with the open rooms... ok you're not communicating via headphones, but you're doing everything else with headphones? not a fan of the open plan thing
wow, je suis tellement impressionné. Sylvia tu es géniale. I got 5 tapes recorders 1\4 in studer, otari, ampex mono and it's so fun to create with those; youre right.
Sylvia is so inspiring. I say it all the time. While there is a basic standard in sound there really isn't any rules that dictate how we create. Having fun creating should be the goal. You have to experiment.
"He had a shotgun"
OK a shotgun mic
"He started shooting the piano"
Hold on
What a passion she shows us!!! A true artist with a creative/intelligent open mind...:) My deep respect for Sylvia!!

Recording bass in a submarine. Go ahead and top that one!

Pauline Oliveros recorded in a giant empty cistern. "Deep Listening". A musical treasure.
Sylvia Massy is a class act. Totally undersells herself in every interview. Amazing talent!

Raymond Kitchen it’s nice seeing the origin of the trick. Every time I see a producer in a video mention they act like they invented it
Brainy intelligence talented and really cute she's got me where do I sign up for the fan club?
I love the painted art. And everything else! This is a fantastic and motivating video. Thanks Sylvia!
She’s awesome - she brings a very cool energy with her, something rare and genuinely unique. 👏👏👏

THIS IS GREAT. i JUST lOVE SYLIVIA AND HER OUT OF THE BOX THINKING! Whats life if you can't shoot a few pianos! Love it just love it!!!!!!
She’s my favorite producer! Get her book. It’s great.
Sylvia should try setting a piano on fire, wood looses it's weakness and strings will randomly kinda shoot.
Reinier van zwieten, piano strings are anchored to a cast iron frame. They make sound via spruce soundboard. Cool idea anyway.
No in all piano's i guess. my brother has witnessed a piano getting set ablaze .
She’s awesome but she should have donated the two pianos to poor kids or a underfunded school.
