I've seen quite a few interviews with Sylvia and there is something special about her that defies description beyond being incredibly talented both technically and artistically creative. plus she's funny as hell.
I'm so glad to hear about her. This is what recording music should be, fun and inventive. With all the gear that's out there now, and the ease at which recording can be done, we have records that all sound the same. It should be the opposite.
man some of it may seem gimmicky, but I really found her so inspiring. I think it's so easy (especially if you engineer professionally) to lose that sense of magic and wonder.
Sylvia Massey is absolutely the coolest in the business! What a joy to hear her talk about her profession and most importantly share her mastery of the art to others. I am humbled at her willingness to share what one could never gain from a school. At the top of the mountain of the business. Straight up bright and beautiful. Killer sense of humor too. They don't make folks like her anymore. Cheers, Sylvia.
For people not aware of it, YOU ARE LOOKING AT A REAL WARRIOR AND WHATEVER FIELD SHE WOULD CHOOSE IN LIFE SHE WOULD BE A CHAMP AT IT... This is a pure example of a genious, collected, calm, passionate, smart, beautiful in every possible way.. A warrior woman... ;)
Amusing. Experimenting is one of the best ways to find new effects. To do something unique, you have to take chances. Sometimes it's the silliest or seemingly "most wrong" method that produces the most desirable result.
There are several instances in the interview where you can sort of tell by her eye movements and pauses that the interviewer was already trying his best not to laugh. Then sphincter C happened.
What a beautiful mind! This is one of the few producers who actually cares about her artists and her work. She knows more about recording than any book ever written or any of the teachers of those useless expensive schools where you learn absolutely nothing.
I worked for Sam Foster at Audio Visions studios in Lindon, Utah. He did adventure recording without knowing. We ruined 2 mics once by firing machine guns in the studio. We made amazing guitar sounds by putting amps in small rooms and mics in the far corners. And Sylvia is 100% right. Even the stuff we didnt use made the sessions work so much better. Sylvia is the best.
She's inspired my production techniques more than anyone! Her book is wonderful. She's one of the greats. Mixerman comes in a close second though! His books are great too.
She is fantastic. Hope to have a chance to work with her someday. Reminds me of a visual cross between Ginger Rogers and Hillary Clinton. What a beautiful spirit.
Infectious enthusiasm of the woman!! .... the best music is fun to produce...Beefheart emphasises music is play not work . I wonder if that german castle she mentioned was the one used by CAN to rehearse and record in ? ...where they developed a new way of recording they called inner space. I think they were locked in for months {or years even} to hone their legendary improv skills.
That reverb mic could be used as a reverb unit if you wanted a unique spring reverb sound on a guitar and are using a basic amplifier that doesn't have effects by just using it as another mic on the amp and turnng up its reverb to max and mixing it with the other 'dry' mic.
This is awesome , great video . I am now a fan of Sylvia Massy. Made me laugh though towards the end at 17:00 she says tighten your sphincter when trying to sing. This chick is awesome.
She seems so much fun to work with... Id choose her over top producers to record and album cuz she breaks the monotony... And shes AWESOME... Id marry her for sure
I see an AKAI/ROBERTS reel-to-reel on the rack, top left. I have one picked up from ebay, to date not utilized. I'm wondering how Sylvia uses hers. Anyone have any ideas or knowledge of how she uses it?
Thank you so much🙏 for talking about your recording with "Machines of Loving Grace" one of my favorite bands of all time! And one of my favorite albums of theirs of all-time! I would so very much love for you to talk more about the recording of that album. Also, the sound that you described while talking about it makes me think of the last song on the album "Serpico" which had a interesting cacophony feedback sound which sounds similar to what you were mentioning. I wonder if it was used on that song If that all?
That was excellent! I am inspired to try out some of the techniques Sylvia talked about. I almost spat my tea out when she showed her vocal tip drawing at the end though! 😂
She's so cool, silly crazy stuff can really inspire creativity, this is awesome. Workflow Shmworflow, let's have fun, work hard and make a great recording!
Shooting pianos with shotguns?! Tightening your sphincter for a better vocal performance?!?!? 😳 Where has this woman been all my life?! Marry me?!!? 🤗❤️😍😘
They say sometimes Talent is hard to capture on camera, this is literally the best interview I've seen yet. they probably had to use duct tape to hold her in the chair, she seems like the kind of person who can't stop moving.
"It sounds horrible but it's awesome" rock n roll in six words
I've seen quite a few interviews with Sylvia and there is something special about her that defies description beyond being incredibly talented both technically and artistically creative. plus she's funny as hell.
She's a tad unhinged... in the best way.
it's called : CHARM ... this special thing #TheEyesChico
I think the kids call it "being cray-cray"
I'm so glad to hear about her. This is what recording music should be, fun and inventive. With all the gear that's out there now, and the ease at which recording can be done, we have records that all sound the same. It should be the opposite.
Oh my god I love Sylvia Massy so much. Best interview ever.
"broken in a wonderful way..." Awesome. You gotta love Ms. Massy.
Beautifully crazy!
Lucky us she made her way into music business, otherwise she would be a serial killer :D
Hahahahaha!!!!
McGyver's sister! :D
hahaha, saved!
Hey now! Saying she'd be a serial killer is taking things too far. That's no joking matter. She'd probably just collect skin to make fat suits.
Hahaha!
She's so brilliant and is a lovely human being.
Don't be lazy. She is so innovative and wonderful. Not to mention legendary. Great vid! Get off of your "plug-ins" addictions people!
well you put 'plug-ins' in quotations but they are unequivocally called 'plug-ins' so i don't really understand your comment.
Can I give this 1000 likes? Slylvia, I swear to not be lazy!!! And I adore you!
What a lovely person. The music business would be so much better with more people like her. Out of the box thinking all the way.
man some of it may seem gimmicky, but I really found her so inspiring. I think it's so easy (especially if you engineer professionally) to lose that sense of magic and wonder.
Thanks, She is a legend. I am so sick of rules now I have a new appreciation for Sylvia Massy and she's funny.

Sylvia, what a champ! Got to love her.
A warrior woman... ;)
The impact both her and Rick Rubin had on System's first album just amazes me...really respect they're work.
Infectious energy. So nice to see this kind of West Coast dynamism.
Amusing.
Experimenting is one of the best ways to find new effects.
To do something unique, you have to take chances.

Hi there, those two holes one the wood on right of the speaker you did it for any particular reason?
I see an AKAI/ROBERTS reel-to-reel on the rack, top left. I have one picked up from ebay, to date not utilized. I'm wondering how Sylvia uses hers.

Awesome inspiration, thanks!
I like how she peers into the soul of someone off screen after stating she likes using the shotgun shell mic on acoustic guitar.
6:10
What's the best-sounding hose?
She's so great. I'd love to work with her.
My kind of lady. Respect!
I would do anything for one day shadowing in the studio with this masterful human being.
