Let me bear witness. I was at the San Francisco Revenge club show. While I've always been a fan, it was that night I realized how great a band they actually are. I was on the floor right in front of the stage and to this day it was the greatest sound I'd ever experienced. Gene was phenomenal, his bass never sounded so great, warm, clear and loud. Singer was insane on the double bass, the guitars rocked, etc. The physical sound was like floating on a cloud of warm hot heaven, Paul's vocals were stellar, etc etc etc.

Saw them on the Atlanta stop of the Club Tour for Revenge at Center Stage. Granted Center Stage is not really a club but a very small venue. I've seen them over 50 times and I've never heard them sound that good that night. Saw the full fledge Revenge arena show later in the year and again, they sounded incredible. Musically they were smoking at that point.

Oh Larry c’mon. The Spectrum in Philly was a half house or worse. Paul was so embarrassed he tried to make light of it on stage by saying words to the effect: we’ve played to larger crowds. They never intended to bring back Eric Carr back even if he made a full recovery. It's well known that Eric and Paul weren't on speaking terms anymore. Even before he was diagnosed with cancer.. Paul runs Kiss. Even Gene doesn't cross him and Bruce has no say. Singer worked with Paul on his solo tour and would have replaced Eric Carr no matter what. Eric wanted more input and Paul basically wanted a hired gun.. It's why Bruce and Eric hardly ever did any talking in the interviews. Eric wanted to be a contributing member. he wanted to be a bigger part of Kiss.. The fact that Paul trashed him in his book shows that Paul was never his friend. I know this guy is their former manager, but it's obvious he's still close with the band and ain't gonna burn bridges. There's a reason why Eric's family still doesn't associate with Kiss.

      @cruiser6260 6 месяцев назад

      Big baseless conspiracy theory there.
If they wanted to get rid of Eric they could have done it any time. Playing on a solo album means nothing. That's the point of doing a solo album, it's not a kiss album .
Everyone trashes everyone else in their books so that's nothing. The trashing of Eric Carr by Stanley is telling him to stop the non communication. Not also not speaking to Eric but telling him to speak.
Also they say all the time they wanted more input from other members, come up with some songs

The reason why kids stopped listening to 80's is because teens and early 20's are impressionable. By MTV and the Vedder and Cobain saying those bands were lame they were going to jump ship because they wanted to fit in. I lived through all that. I remember playing wanted dead or alive in a guitar shop in 1994 and the guy behind the counter laughed at me. Now play that riff and your a hero. Go figure.

I say all of this because I think this was a big factor in the 80’s teens now coming into real life in their 20s and dropping a little bit of the concert going/party life and now to get serious. I wish this interview was 10 hours long. Great guest.
For me personally, I'm not a fan of the Revenge era I don't think the album aged well and honestly I thought the band looked a little ridiculous going threw their metal phase. They looked cool but it just wasn't Kiss to me. The stage was too dark and the album was overrated to me. I feel that if I never heard the Revenge album for the rest of my life I'd be ok with that.

I think Larry is way wrong in his assessment. There's a lot more than 3 good songs on HITS.
You Love Me To Hate You, Silver Spoon could've been really good singles.
Two of those Gene songs were some of his best of the 80's: Betrayed and Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell.
The HITS tour was easily the best KISS tour of the non-makeup era in my humble opinion. I saw the tour in 3 different cities and every night was magical..
Larry was right to push UNHOLY as the 1st single for "Revenge"
"Domino" was the wrong choice for a 2nd single. "I Just Wanna" is a more interesting song. I think "Spit" could have been the 3rd single.
When he talks about "Revenge" not going platinum, I wonder if after all this time, if someone was to do a proper accounting of sales where it would be now.

at the 34 minute mark he blames the failure of Cinderella "Heartbreak Station" on Nirvana. He is totally wrong.
Cinderella came out in the 4th quarter of 1990, NIrvana was not out yet. "Nevermind" comes out a year later after the entire touring cycle for "Heartbreak..."ended.
The reason the album failed -- a hard shift into a more bluesy direction turned some people off and Mtv and Radio did not get behind any of the singles. The title track, a power ballad, failed to crack the top 40 and when that single failed, it was over.
For the record I love Heartbreak Station - it's a solid album with some fantastic songs and I think "Sick for the Cure" and "Make Your Own Way" could have been big hit singles.
By comparison, Poison released their 3rd album around the same time as Cinderella, radio did get behind the singles, the tour was very successful and they sold 3 million of that 3rd album. Grunge was not a factor when these albums came out - Soundgarden and Alice In Chains were both new underground bands on the rise. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins weren't really stealing anyone's spotlight yet.

I agree with a lot of your observations, but for me it was over saturation of that hard rock style by a slew of lesser talent who got signed for a decent song or two and having a look, by the time any of those pretty much big haired boy bands got a record out it was formulaic, cause the record companies like keep it simple and keep it cheap. for Every great band like Cinderella there were a ton of bands with names like Ransom, Roxx Gang, Rox Diamond and pole Position and many, many others that only Danny Waysted remembers. Bands who were processed with a syrupy ballad on ever record and pushed as a single. Same thing happened after the birth of Rock-n-Roll After Elvis and Chuck Berry the music got watered down with your Fabians and Frankie Avalons, Neil Sedakas. Record companies took something good and organic and added fat to it and processed making it impalatable to those who enjoyed the original. The Music Business has also been a business about making the most amount of money while investing the least money into the product. But you are right Grunge didn' kill hair metal or as I call it Rock-n-Roll, apathey and greed did.

@@jollyjakelovell6822 oh yes, I agree with your assessment totally .
The record companies signed far too many bands.
      Oversaturation played a part.
Bands that really didn't deserve a record deal and promotion poured into them, off the top of my head, Britny Fox, Danger Danger, White Lion, Keel, Malice, Trixter, Firehouse, Steelheart, Heavens Edge, Roxy Blue, Babylon AD, Pretty Boy Floyd, Roxx Gang, D'Molls, Dirty Looks, Sea Hags.
When grunge hit, for whatever reason the record companies didn't sign and release 8,000 grunge bands. The whole scene sorta disappeared quickly.

    • @jollyjakelovell6822

@@angryagain3801 I'm going to disagree to two of those bands, Britny Fox and Heaven's Edge, I'm a mark for Britny Fox. The other bands you named I never cared for and those are the ones who had some name recognition for everyone of them there were ten bands like Tigertailz and Mama's Boys (Yes those are bands who released records in the late 80s) They just had the look and played a power ballad or two and generic rockers that couldn't even make a late 80s B action movie soundtrack. Much better bands than any of those didn't get signed like John Corabi's band Angora and KIX for goodness sake never got the push they deserved.
When grunge came along I just thought of them as reaching back and grabbing hold of some Black Sabbath and incorporating it into their sound, In the bell curve of humanity most fall in the middle and chase trends. One of the stakes through grunge and most late nineties music's heart was two or three telecom companies buying up all the radio stations and mandating playlists that benefitted record labels that how shall I say, showed the most gratitude.
I am just glad I grew up in the 70s and 80s. I feel bad for all these soundcloud artists who will never have world tours let alone here across North America. I mean who even tours these days? 80s and 70s bands plus the undying Rolling Stones, do even hip hop groups do tours? besides the ones where folks die at.
I had to revisit to add this.
Larry Mazer is as responsible for Britny Fox becoming a band as anyone in the band themselves. He let the drummer and co-lead guitarist go from Cinderella in order to get Cinderella a record deal. The crazy thing is, is that guitarist, Michael Kelly Smith is or I should say was a big part of why Night Songs sounded like it did (Usually everyone's favorite). Barry Benedetta, the fellow who played on the album had to have Smith show him Smith's licks. Keifer would go on to shortly thereafter help get Britny Fox signed. I am not certain but I think that Mazer had seen Jeff LaBar (RIP) in one of his bands before seeing Cinderella and through that prior relationship is how Jeff go into the band once Mazer axed Smith and Tony Destra.
And to bring the circle all the way around Gene Simmons had seen Cinderella back in 1983 and showed interest in the band and that was when half of that band would later become Britny Fox/

@@jollyjakelovell6822 I remember Mama's Boys. They were good, well their two U. S. Releases were good, when they became a four piece and got dropped by the American label and tried to be Night Ranger or whatever, no, that was not good.
Britny Fox I thought was such a boring generic knock off of Cinderella.
Do you remember that little period in the mid 90's when the record labels spit out all these soundalike pop alternative acts, many got their five minutes of fame but they were all basically indistinguishable from one another (Tonic, Dishwalla, Matchbox 20, Vertical Horizon, Goo Goo Dolls) That was sorta like the end of the 80's metal scene, bland interchangeable bands polluting the rock scene.
Like you, I'm glad I grew up when I did. Rock scene isn't anything near as cool as it once was.
      You asked who tours?
      Good question.
      Slipknot
      Korn
      Volbeat
      Ghost
These bands seem to be able to play respectable sized venues. Most newer bands can not.

I’m sorry Mazer. I was a Cinderella fan and remember Long Cold Winter coming out. Heartbreak Station might’ve played in the East but it was the end. Nirvana didn’t kill Cinderella. Guns N’ Roses did. Then White Zombie stomped the body. Skid Row was hot. Metallica. We didn’t care about Aerosmith clones and moved on for a while. Cinderella was too specific. I loved them but they had narrow appeal. There was an anti hair band vibe in general and many bands were able to avoid it, hair or not.

Part of KISS is their history and the personalities. Paul and Gene did what they have had to do to keep the band viable...since day one. If they stopped paying Eric's health insurance..they are assholes. However, someone needs to show that happened. Secondly, if Paul wanted to fire Carr and hire Singer back then..it's his band..Carr was still an employee..even after 11 years. It's the music BUSINESS.

It wasn't just Nirvana that killed the decadent Hard Rock of the 80s. The early 90s were serious times in terms of world affairs. The 1st Gulf War in Kuwait & Iraq. The civil war in former Yugoslavia. The News covered it 24/7. Thus Not a good mood for 80s Hair Metal and Cock Rock, right?

Regarding Cinderella which he mentions at 1:11, the third album bombed for a reason. Bad album. "Shelter Me" is not a good rock song, it sounds like they were doing a silly impression of an R&B/gospel/blues song. We bought Night Songs because the songs rocked hard and they dressed like cool rockers. A lot of bands devolved into humdrum bluesy bands at that time.

I like Buckcherry, but I believe they're too vulgar to have mainstream appeal. Josh Todd, God love him looks kind of like a drug addict with all those tattoos. I like Lit up but I love the cocaine is not mainstream. Should have stuck to I'm sorry type songs. They're not heavy enough to be metal and their look is too hard-core for the rock fans. Plus with today's political climate just not politically correct.

As to Buckcherry, I was gobsmacked by this band when I first heard them, which was in my sisters small apartment in South Royalton Vermont after a horrific drive back from Maine that night. Lit Up came on as I was falling asleep and I was blown away! I was a fan. However, I then had kids and I was disgusted by the elementary lyrics of Josh and while I've tried thru friends to listen to new releases, I'm embarrassed by the lyrics. Not only that, Josh, similar to Dangerous Toys singer, Jason McMaster, there's a very limited vocal range and I'm bored by the second or third album.

I actually prefer HITS to Revenge, both music and looks. Revenge gas good songs, but sounds too 90-s, and I like almost all the songs on HITS.
About Cinderella - the cover of their first album is the reason I own it on vynil. When I first saw it I thought "these guys look like I'm gonna enjoy their music". And I did. Other albums - not so much. "Hair Metal" rules!
And yeah, Curt Cobain died 4 years too late. Here, I said it. I despise him and all the grunge movement, its philosophy, its "anti-rock-star" attitude. Larry is right, they singlehandedly killed the Rock Culture turned it into some semi-underground thing. I can't imagine how insecure you must be prfer this depressive whining over the fun "Party Rock"

When i first heard "smells like teen spirit" i thought the chorus was cool and sounded like the hair metal melodic that i love ,energy..I didnt know the difference until other songs came out.I hated Peral jam and alice in chains from the moment i heard them. Eddie vedder is the worst singer ive heard ..he sounds like hes trying to sing while he is constipated .. I still liked bands like Firehouse. Warrant and all the moan stays as well . The real reason hair metal died for alternative is a few reasons i think..
    * a new decade and outlook on things ,people spent 10 years with hair metal and just wanted something new .Also .some of the teens in the 80s are now growing older, some starting families and buying less music and more real life things like rent..
    * collage kids liked alternative because those kids are like programed zombies.its a click and if they are told somethng is cool they believed it and followed it .
this is thier impression that it makes them smarter and they already kinda felt that way in collage .. it was to fit in . Thats why whatever mtv or dial mtv said was cool ,the kids liked and those kids grew up to go to collage . There is no other reason REM would have a fan if it wasnt for that mushy mind .
    * the record companies left the hair bands behind so they didnt have enough push for new music ,videos tours so they had to play clubs.it was the industry cutting off the money too
    * some of the metal fans were just fans because it was the pop culture so when that changed their tastes did too
    * this how rap became popular, they make you feel shamed if you didnt liek it.like you were racist ..white kids liked rap to prove they were not racist in many cases..not all .some kids liked it for the same reason, different that what they heard for the last 10 years but a lot did to make that statement. .
    * people listen with their eyes ...same as Paul mentioned on creatures vs lick it up ..
