Wasn’t interested on this game but love the reviews. 100 percent reviews honestly mean so much. That means you know the game basically in and out. 10/10
Was impatiently waiting for your full opinion on this. Thanks! I was going to buy it anyway as I loved the visual and music art of the game. On the gameplay side, I already changed my Souls-like habits during the demo. Since the parry window was generous, rushing into enemies with a huge 2-hands weapon while parrying them all at the same time was incredibly fun. I found it great to chose a more risky approach since the game seems a bit on the easy side. Just finished Visions of mana, all quests and challenges done. Only remains the post-game additional chapter. It's now only a matter of day before I start fighting under the Italian sun!
The game has been fantastic so far, especially coming from a really small studio. It upsets me how many people are honestly expecting some triple AAA quality gaming from this one. I have heard some real shit excuses for not enjoying the game and it is just kinda disappointing to be honest. I recommend that you purchase it, especially given that the price is perfect for what it offers and yeah
There's Clash: Artifacts of Chaos from 2023 that on an average playthrough is around that length of time. Can very warmly recommend that one. Colorful, solid, awesome world, music and protagonist. I would mention Soulstice too, though that does lean more past the 16 hours and around... 20 i'd say.
thank you for the always genuine and easy to listen to reviews, I swear you're the only reviewer who can honestly convey negatives in the most positive way possible to help people make an informed decision
thanks for your opinions, always useful for checking a game .. I'm happy to know that some problems from the demo version have been fixed, an I understand perfectly that a small team got its limits .. maybe they can use this title as a starting point to improve strengths and flaws in the future .. as an italian player I'm happy to read many comments praising art direction and atmosphere 😉👍
I've only played a couple hours, but I kind of love it. It's a little goofy but the gameplay holds up, parrying enemies to death is always fun and the animations are simple and easy to read. It manages to be very pretty without very impressive graphics. And the instant build swap mechanic is pretty cool
No matter how great or not the game ends up being I'm happy to see some originality in this over saturated and very same-y genre. It's refreshing to see such a unique setting used for a videogame. I have no particular affinity with italian folklore but videogames in the last decade or so are becoming in general so stale and lack creativity so the few titles that try something different (in this case both with the setting and some gameplay ideas) are more than welcome. I feel they could do great games if they continue as it seems most of the shortcoming of this game sound like lower budget and lack of experience more than anything really.
@@bwhere45a part of what makes from soft’s the kings of this genre is the fact they prioritize art direction above almost everything else. They hooked people with ds1 and that game had rough gameplay. The actual setting really is important and art direction as well.
@@Fishy_1998yt Shit they hooked a lot of people on Demon Souls which has even worse bosses and enemies than DS1, and and no world design interconnectivity, each level is just something you teleport between with no connection. Its art direction is insane and the level design is pretty good, and that was enough. Sure the genre has evolved a lot and we can have great gameplay and great art, to the point that this game is a 'buy on sale for me' but I agree with you.
I tend to agree, but personally I feel like rewarding this company for the immense work they have done, being a small team and on their very first game.... as well as having shown passion and beautiful atmospheres in this work actually. So.. idk, I played Thymesia, Mortal Shell etc etc and all those mediocre Soulslike, so I don’t want to go to harsh with them. 😅
Totally fair. I'm enjoying the game and it's worth it to me but the most unique part about this is the Elemental effects. It's not anything ground breaking but it is fun and I personally appreciate it isn't too difficult. I'd put this game just below Lies of P but really close.
@@bluesoul7163 Can recommend to look into Clash: Artifacts of Chaos too, even though that one is only partially Soulslike (campfires, health flask of which the drinking animation can be interrupted, structure with a lot of shortcuts that loop back). Combat's quite like a 3D fighting or martial arts game where you can find different styles to assign to your character. Said protagonist, Pseudo, is not a blank slate, and the world is colorful and full of bizarre creatures. Hardly a human in sight.

Still; it’s nice that we’re getting less gloomy soulslikes recently, something that is very much played out in this day and age. Hopefully the devs get a chance to work on another title.

Yeah the quality of the combat and the 12-15 hr length (short for a soulslike) does not warrant the $50 price tag- waiting for a deep sale. I mean the Elden Ring DLC was only $40 and was at least double the length and way better quality!
My thoughts exactly. They missed an opportunity for more sales. Should have priced it at $34.99 or something like that (similar to Mortal Shell, Hellpoint, Bleak Faith, etc.) It's not to the quality of Remnant 2 that started at $50.
You spend way more than $50 for dinner or night at the bar both around 3hrs of fun + diarrhea/hangover. I personally like to support smaller teams that are trying to make good work so that they continue trying. Can't wait for a new Elden Ring all the time.
It's not exactly short. When I looked up boss list, it looked over 20. No offense to reviewer but I constantly see reviews coin the bare bones time to beat game. As in with zero mistakes, side quests or deaths.
Story and lore are ispired by "Commedia dell'arte", it was a 16th/17th century popular theater based on defined archetypical characters ("maschere") and a very thin script ("canovaccio") which were used by actors to pretty much improvise their performance and stories.
I bought the deluxe edition for $60, because you get the DLC when it comes out. I do tend to play through once, but then play it again later down the road. I didn't mind the price tag still, cause at least I'm enjoying it. I do have some complaints, and a lot of it is technical, mostly noticing input lagging. Still I don't regret buying it, like I regretted spending $40 on Deathbound. Which has a similar switch playstyles on the fly system.
Thanks for the video. The point about the two handers is interesting. From Soft devs have gone on record saying that skill alone should determine a players success (paraphrasing). But the idea is that any item/weapon should be viable. That freedom to approach a game like that, I think, is the core of a soulslike. Onward to 400k. All glory to the algorithm.
Playing using an elemental / status build, using the different loadouts to ply different damage types felt integral to use, but if you're just hitting things with a sword then it doesn't really seem necessary.
See this is why I still watch reviews even after I already bought the game. Hearing about someone else's experience is always interesting. Personally I leaned heavily into the status tree and the masks lines. Using weapons that countered an enemy's damage or resistance was always exciting to me and turned some encounters into a fast paced dance with a combo of attacks, especially using the "presto"(fastest charging) mask lines in conjunction to double up on a specific elemental damage. Here's hoping though that updates can improve upon this because there is some solid potential. Edit: to note I also mainly used heavy weapons for DPS and fast weapons to heal.
Same for me. Leaning hard into the element system is quite strong, especially the “Fatuo” element. I killed the first boss with the torch that drops from enemies and I just face tanked him the entire time while healing.
Last time I called mort a legend for completing a game that literally just came out and it triggered many people for using the term "legend*... So good job keep it up!
I encountered the enemies/bosses freezing thing in the demo as well. I found it happened if I put them in a staggered state but didn't land the critical attack before they recovered. On the other hand the same situation sometimes caused regular enemies to become invincible where no matter how much I attacked them, they were unperturbed.
The demo is actually much worse than the full release, which is unfortunate since people base their initial impressions on it a lot from what I’ve read.
Honestly my biggest detractor here is the $50 price tag. I used that same amount of money on FFXVI which is a significantly higher production. Lies of P and Wukong were $60 but those games are also much longer and even a lot more polished on launch than this game especially the key binding thing is a downer. Definitely gonna wait for a sale but hopefully they fix up everything by then.

That was my biggest problem with Elden Ring, everyone says it's so beautiful. While for me it just look one-dimensional and everything is dark and dull. No contrast between areas, never any nicer sunny areas.
@@xan42O What are you smoking, it is the same orange colored hue through the entire game. The whole overworld look the same, there is never any scenery that I have seen that look like the nice beach in Enotria.
Hi Morts! Would you consider making a video theorising what your CRPG would look like if you were ever to develop a game? Mechanics/world/story/theme etc. I would love to hear your thoughts.
Just like lies of p and steel rising, i like to see more of the ilk. Not everyone will have the means to belt out a classic, but these lil guys need a chance too
A bit of (euro)jank is fine for RPGs IMO... except for souls-like. I wish AA devs would make more hack&slashy/easier combat systems instead so that the lack of polish didn't kill the fun so much.
I was not impressed by the demo, and your review reinforces that opinion. Plus I'm still trying to find the time + focus to finish Black Myth: Wukong, which I totally did end up buying after watching your video on it lol :D
I think the games awesome. If u like souls games this is right up ur alley. Great exploration. It’s not super easy. There’s a parry system. A lot of weapons. Has ur typical elevators and shortcuts in levels. If u pick up the blue markers in the levels it will tell u about ur enemies and info about the npcs in the game and aslo tell u about the story in the game. There’s a lot of items that are hidden and not right out in the blue. Like u have to hit wooden barrels or box’s that sometimes hold items. I also think the art design is nice and unique. It’s definitely harder than black myth Wu kong. I’m not to far into the game and the boss Veltha the god of strife feels like the new malenia right now so the game deff gives u a good challenge.
The setting of this game is very cool. I played the demo too. But I really had a big problem with heavy weapons. Sometimes you couldn't get one hit in. And that's still the problem it seems. Budget it is then.
Play time to cost ratio is something that matters a lot to me, because I want to feel like I’m getting a decent amount of playtime out of my purchase. So hearing it’s not even 20 hours for what I’m sure was a very thorough first run (knowing you Mort) is disappointing and definitely makes this game a “sale purchase” at best. To put it in perspective, the newer Lords of the Fallen cost $20 more and I got 100 hours out of my first play through. And I know that game was janky at launch but I still had fun with it and being able to devote that much time to it without replays padding that time counted for a lot with me.
Graphics, music and art style is good. But it's way too buggy (i.e. my character got stuck in one of the elevators; was fighting a boss halfway and his health bar disappeared). There's also a lot issues with difficulty balancing with sudden random weird spikes in difficulty for regular enemies and mini bosses. Missing quality of life features such as a weapon inventory filter, storage chests and return to bonfire functions. Parrying is fun but the combat animations are bad and can get really annoying (i.e. your regular enemies and archers somehow have infinite poise in the second area) If Lies of P was a 8/10, this would be a 3-4. Just didn't feel like a complete product
If this is a 4 Thymesia, Mortal Shell and Lords of the Fallen are a 1… Guys come on… This is not even an AAA game… The team is small and this is their first ever game, I think they deserve a little bit better than these harsh critics imho
@@bluesoul7163I agree about It being "Just" AA and that it's a First game (but Watch out, lies of P was a First game too), but jyamma isn't that small
@@AndrewTheUltraBoss99 Lies of P was in fact quite incredible… But even with Lies of P, many people didn’t liked the combat system, the animations of gameplay’s fighting mechanics etc etc, but for me the pros are definitely more than any cons… But you can't please everyone and for games like this the most important thing for me is to try to make a decent impression at least for lovers of the soulslike genre... I also believe that if Enotria had been released in a different time window and not between two great productions like the ER’s DLC and Wukong , it would certainly have made a better impression.
Hey, mortismal thank you for the review! Are there any accessibility options? I am partly blind, and I'm having so much trouble reading the text. I'm currently in the tutorial and it's a struggle.
They just rolled out an update with a Story mode and "Soulslike" mode. My 12+ hour game has defaulted to Story mode and I don't think I can change it. Really a bummer. I was stuck on a boss; died like 10 times. After the update, beat it on the first try. My damage is like 3x now. Feels too easy; kinda ruined my game. EDIT: ok they were pretty quick to add an option to change it back. Storymode is laughably easy.
I've not fully 100% completed it. Once was enough. Don't care about getting multiple endings as quite frankly I did not enjoy this game. Big souls fan but this was off. Looks amazing and that's basically where my praise ends. I did the entire game with the same mask as I saw no real benefits swapping. Weapons I used a couple but a good 95% I didn't bother trying Combat was pretty sloppy like parrying I found particular tricky to do as timing was just dumb and didn't work. Boss fights were pretty good except for the random control issues. Level design was silly. I dunno how many memoria points I lost as I fell off a ledge onto another ledge with no way off except death Id say maybe 4/10
Good review, still honestly 12 to 15 h doesn't make sense. I'm not the best souls gamer ever but it took me 10 hours to finish the demo only :D And i've done a couple of runs of Sekiro, Bloodborne, Elden Ring among others
I am sure I played a demo for this a few months ago and it was very clunky and the price here in Australia is $70 which is a bit much for this game imo. I might consider it later on when it is on sale I think
12 to 15 hours for a souls like is honestly disappointing especially for its higher price point so I'm gonna pass on this one For reference Black myth Wukong's first few chapters are at least 15 to 20 hours already and it's only a bit more expensive
I found parrying to be extremely underpowered vs status damage. The loadouts let you switch between different status builds on the fly but the weapon upgrade system doesn't really support this too well.
Im almost done with the game and i never swapped masks, never felt the need. Used a single elemental weapon, and just swapped to a different element during areas it was resisted. A big shame, really. Also the attack pattern being repeated bt 80% of the enemies was disappointing.
Honestly really tempted to get this one in a month or so when the bugs are worked out just because the aesthetic looks gorgeous. Are there other games with this kind of "Spaghetti Fantasy" vibe?

@@xan42O What are you smoking, it is the same orange colored hue through the entire game. The whole overworld look the same, there is never any scenery that I have seen that look like the nice beach in Enotria.
Played the demo. Would buy this later
Hi Morts!
Would you consider making a video theorising what your CRPG would look like if you were ever to develop a game?
Mechanics/world/story/theme etc.
I would love to hear your thoughts.
It just came out today and you’ve already platinum the game?? Damn, gotta respect the grind 🫡
Like I said in the intro, I had a review key
this is the conclusion i had after playing the demo. buy on sale when its about 10-20 buckos
You may find stuff to like in Clash: Artifacts of Chaos and Soulstice.
I was not impressed by the demo, and your review reinforces that opinion. Plus I'm still trying to find the time + focus to finish Black Myth: Wukong, which I totally did end up buying after watching your video on it lol :D
Thanks for the video
I spent 2 weeks and just finished visions of mana, this guy 100% a game every week or something
Yeah roughly
2:34- Alright they must have ripped that crab straight out of DS3s crucifixion woods, or made the most identical looking enemy ever.
The setting of this game is very cool. I played the demo too. But I really had a big problem with heavy weapons. Sometimes you couldn't get one hit in. And that's still the problem it seems. Budget it is then.
with all the great games of 2024 its hard to consider spending the time here. Maybe when i run out of enjoying what’s been released this year so far.
Lol bro went through the damn rocks 0:22
How you don’t have two or 3 million subscribers is beyond me. I won’t buy a game until I see your review.
I’ll try this when it’s like 10-15 dollars.
My save broke at the first boss. He disappeared from the room and the gate is still locked. Can't progress. Not sure what to do :-(
Back in the academy they called me the mortar
Graphics, music and art style is good. But it's way too buggy (i.e. my character got stuck in one of the elevators; was fighting a boss halfway and his health bar disappeared). There's also a lot issues with difficulty balancing with sudden random weird spikes in difficulty for regular enemies and mini bosses. Missing quality of life features such as a weapon inventory filter, storage chests and return to bonfire functions. Parrying is fun but the combat animations are bad and can get really annoying (i.e. your regular enemies and archers somehow have infinite poise in the second area)
If Lies of P was a 8/10, this would be a 3-4. Just didn't feel like a complete product
If this is a 4 Thymesia, Mortal Shell and Lords of the Fallen are a 1…
Guys come on…
This is not even an AAA game…
The team is small and this is their first ever game, I think they deserve a little bit better than these harsh critics imho
@@bluesoul7163I agree about It being "Just" AA and that it's a First game (but Watch out, lies of P was a First game too), but jyamma isn't that small
@@AndrewTheUltraBoss99 Lies of P was in fact quite incredible…
But even with Lies of P, many people didn’t liked the combat system, the animations of gameplay’s fighting mechanics etc etc, but for me the pros are definitely more than any cons…
But you can't please everyone and for games like this the most important thing for me is to try to make a decent impression at least for lovers of the soulslike genre...
I also believe that if Enotria had been released in a different time window and not between two great productions like the ER’s DLC and Wukong , it would certainly have made a better impression.
This game likely would have benefited more from.being sinilar to Hades in art style and camera perspective.
What’s your next game to 100%?
FF16 is up next
Can you make a material farming guide?
It looks like a good game. Gonna give it a try!
There are some perks and consumables that give you super armor, which I'm assuming its like hyper armor from FS games...
Hey, mortismal thank you for the review! Are there any accessibility options? I am partly blind, and I'm having so much trouble reading the text. I'm currently in the tutorial and it's a struggle.
Not that I'm aware of
@@MortismalGaming dang. Thank you!
I like the idea of this game so I bought
Will play it on gamepass.
❤
Just curious will you ever review Dragon quest 11 or the new DQ3 coming out? Or that genre of games is out of the question.
The genre is fine, but I dont have the time for it right now
Is there any way to activate the vibration on the controller on this game on Ps5?
I'm gonna base my decision on if I should buy this game or not based on this!
Weapons I used a couple but a good 95% I didn't bother trying
Combat was pretty sloppy like parrying I found particular tricky to do as timing was just dumb and didn't work.
Boss fights were pretty good except for the random control issues.
Level design was silly. I dunno how many memoria points I lost as I fell off a ledge onto another ledge with no way off except death
Id say maybe 4/10
Parry! Parry! Parry! Parry! I've seen this anime.
12 to 15 hours for a souls like is honestly disappointing especially for its higher price point so I'm gonna pass on this one
For reference Black myth Wukong's first few chapters are at least 15 to 20 hours already and it's only a bit more expensive
Slow attacks not being viable killed it for me..
I found parrying to be extremely underpowered vs status damage. The loadouts let you switch between different status builds on the fly but the weapon upgrade system doesn't really support this too well.
After playing wukong, all these souls games with their limited move-sets aren't doing it for me. Still waiting for bloodborne 2 tho!
Game could use a lot of work. Just softlocked myself 13 hours in because and elevator lever wont give me the option to use to get back to where i was.
free comment. possibly duplicate.
En Garde! is a spanish swordfighting game 👌🤺
How do you mean "Spaghetti Fantasy" if i may ask?
