The game is lacking in some aspects. That is why he called it an action-adventure instead of Action RPG. Black Myth: Wukong has good combat, fun for those who like games who are boss rush but the rest is average.
Very comprehensive and honest reviews. Well done! Just one thing, I think this game is a must buy for photography lovers. Just because the game offered a brilliant photography mode and you can screenshot the distilled beauty of Chinese landscape sitting at home. You can also record fantastic moment in battle that looked straight out of a first class action movie. So photography lovers definitely should buy this game
This game is surprising me. Once I worked out my graphics settings to get it to run well, I’ve had a blast with it. Only bought it because I was sick this weekend and needed something to pass the time while I sit in my room.
After Dragons Dogma 2 extremely disappointing enemy variety seeing how wukong takes this aspect to the next level really solidified it as one of the best action games for me, this aspect has been a constant disappointment in so many triple A games outside of fromsoft.
@@winchesterkid Everything. Invisible walls is the core issue here. If the game doesn't tell you where to go - it's a bad level design. Exploration being dumped by an invisible wall - an issue too. The journal entries are one of my favorite parts. I looked through them like I was sifting for gold, looking for the golden nugget that provides more detail about what’s going on.
As someone who has beaten all the sekirobloodsouls games. I like black myth a lot. Though something that would irritate me is some bosses I smashed on the first try. Others would hang me up. It would feel more like a dps check or skill allocation problem. Like the game wants you to use certain stances and skills for different bosses. So several times I had to respect multiple times in the early chapter 2 to figure out the combination to beat a boss.
I think it should be said that there ARE a couple other ways to "parry" attacks. Anything that says that you "see through" the enemies attack is a parry/invulnerable move. Moves such as smash stance's resolute strike.
the annoying part is that these parries are locked behind initiating an attack, focus building, or mana. I wish it had a base block/parry like sekiro. It could just be me but it would make combat so much more satisfying.
@@brightboxawesome2702 There is a talent at the bottom of the martial arts tree there's an ability that lets you use mixed combos without any focus points. That opens up a play style where you can always counter whenever the enemy starts attacking during your light combo. It works surprisingly well.
@@brightboxawesome2702 I agree, I found it really annoying that combos are locked behind focus points and magic is tied to both mana and a cool down. I also wish it took from sekiro too, I just don’t think the game has an actual parry besides the rock spell which kinda sucks
@@brightboxawesome2702 Something something risk reward. The thing with moves like resolute strike is that you don't actually have to hit with the initial light attacks. It requires a banked focus point to activate, but only the followup actually spends focus points. You see an enemy ready to charge at you? Light attack nothing and go into resolute strike to parry. There's also gear sets, relic, and talents that reduce the cooldown of rock solid down to like 5 seconds cooldown and refunds almost all of the mana cost if you want to go that route.
Agreed. This game isn't a walk in the park by any means. Unless you're some God-tier gamer, I had issues with a few of these bosses. I'm getting close to end game, and this game was a bit challenging to say the least. Not as frustrating as some of the Souls games could be, but definitely not as easy as Mort makes it seem...IMO.
This was the first time EVER in all 20 years of playing video games that I lost the will to keep playing and that was becauze of the Tiger Vanguard in Act 2. After that, though, I breezed through all the other bosses in the level.
@@MrDawnHDmaybe, but I'm sure someone who's beaten a DMC game or Bayonetta would probably have an easier time than someone who's beaten the souls franchise based entirely on the footage
Act 3 is long I think partly due to plot reasons. In the act (and the original novel if I remember correctly), Yellow Brow pretended to be Buddha, and tried to make his own Buddhism paradise with his own dogmas. And Buddhism features heavily in Black Myth. Hence, the length of the act can be justified imho.
This man is a MENACE. I dont even have children and the idea of finishing, let alone 100%'ing a game this fast is absolutely impossible to imagine for myself.
Great review, thx! I listened to it only with headphones, trying to keep spoilers to a min. Apprec all your hard work. I’ll definitely pick this one up as aRPGs are my favorite
Best reviews on RUclips. I’ve seen so many reviews which I feel are unfinished. When I see people say this game is too linear I laugh. I’m still in act 3 and it never ends lol.
Well done sir. I’m still in the middle of it on PS5 and it’s been a largely trouble free experience except for a few times I had to reset the game to clear a weird stick drift problem that occasionally cropped up. Beyond that… well worth the price of admission.
Thank you for this very professional review. It has everything I need to know about the game, some of which went unmentioned by any other review I've watched, and none of the drama you'll inevitably find if you look it up after finding it's crazily popular on Steam and you want to know why.
The invisible walls bothered me less and less as I played the game. I realized that most of the time behind the invisible walls was an extended part of the background that makes the game even more beautiful and immersive. Its less about lazy level design and more to serve as an extension of the landscape. it makes the levels feel more open and expansive.
Whenever I find one, I'm relieved. Less area to get completely lost in. I like the slightly linear approach in this. Make going off the beaten path and coming back easier. And if they didn't use invisible walls, they'd have to use real ones, and it would make it harder to see those big, beautiful Vistas if I'm forced to stare at a bunch of rocks meant to keep me out.
Yea, I agree..didn't bother me. The more you explore you realize very quickly what is a wall and what isn't and yea, like Kennard said, less to explore. There is PLENTY to explore even with the walls in place, sometimes you need to have a bunch of things in place before you even can explore so it becomes a comfort.
Great, balanced review up to your usual standards. I always look to your reviews very early when I'm deciding on buying a game I'm interested in. You certainly make this sound more interesting than I originally thought. That the game has so few issues and is not (apparently) missing content or quality shows up a lot of Western AAA game companies and how their recent games have released.
Lol, I've played all the souls game and this is the most difficult game I've ever played. I am 61 years old so my reflexes have dwindled but this is so much more challenging than say Elden Ring, for me.
I never played any souls like games before and heard ppl say souls like is pretty much the most difficult type But rarely I heard a comment like yours feeling BMW is harder than souls like game. What is it exactly different or more difficult.
@@JC.72it's not harder at all. Literally the only genuinely difficult boss in the entire game is Erlang. The hardest part about this game is having the patience to slog through shit boss after shit boss, especially in the last two chapters.
I will honestly say I’m horrible at it so far cause I got stuck at wandering white but when I finally beat him I beat the next 3 bosses easily and now I’m having so much fun .
As a KBM gamer myself, I had to use Razer macros to bind my Mouse Buttons to keyboard keys and play this way. It worked really well :D The game does lose 30-40fps in some sections (so far there's one area in Chapter 2 that always loses 30-40fps for me, not sure why, the combat there was terrible lol). Other than that it ran pretty smoothly for me too. No crashes on AMD/RTX 3070 build. I get around 70fps at High with 2 settings on Very High and 65-70% DLSS. I didn't vibe with the game in chapter 1 and the first half of chapter 2, but once I got more abilities (more key bindings too), the game really clicked with me. It has a similar flow to God of War - combos, spells, more combos, more spells after some CD, more combos, etc. But the Resolute Strike is really fun to pull off and the ability to chain light attacks again after Resolute and then another Resolute immediately into another stronger heavy, etc. Really cool combo chaining. It doesn't hold your hand too much, you need to have the talents to dodge without losing the combo streak in order to pull off longer combos, which makes it really fun for me. My advice for everyone is to not give up before chapter 3 - first 2 chapters are definitely very introductory with new and new keybindings being added and the combat getting more and more complex. Towards the end of Chapter 2 (if you've found most secrets), you will have got every available keybinding + the muscle memory for the combat and the fun starts around this point in the game. I love the countless ways you can "progress", constantly new things to augment the gameplay
Combos? I'd say this game is severely lacking on that front compared to action games I've played in the past, not to mention the fact that just bashing square seems to be the optimal way to deal damage, combos, if you can even call them that often just expose the player. To me the combat feels like GoW / FFXVI but is by far the least polished and by far the least diverse combat wise. For my money if you have 1 weapon all game the devs should give you a diverse moveset and different stances should mean different stances - not different heavy attacks. I've grown up on these games and this just feels like the most rushed mechanically I've ever played. Look at Nioh, a choice of about 10-11 different types of weapons, all with 3 stances each and more diverse movesets per stance that there is in Wu Kong with just the one stance and one weapon. Wu Kong is fun, but its so unbelievably bare bones that I just can't help but wonder what they could've achieved had they'd just not bothered trying to make the game look really pretty. For a lot of us graphics sit on the bottom of the pile of wants in a game. Gameplay first, always.
This is the biggest reason for the decline of stand-alone games. Players are crazy about gameplay, but many people cannot play well. In order to cater to players, manufacturers make extreme changes to the operation. A game that can make money is often easy to use and has a low learning cost. In order to cater to players like you, game companies make the game more and more complicated, making it difficult for many ordinary people to play. The fundamental reason why this game can quickly sell 10 million copies is that the graphics meet expectations, not the gameplay. The older people are, the worse their operation will be, so it is difficult to expand the group and attract more people to play a game with complex operations.
@@upon-fe2720compare to Nioh 2 the gameplay does seem lacking. It took me so long to understand the mechanics in Nioh. With Wukong it was easy to learn and easier to master. Although there is only one weapon, the different staffs you can craft, mixed with the correct stance and magic abilities was fun. Playing with the different combinations changed the gameplay enough for me to keep my interest. That’s where I spent most of my time experimenting. Also no cost of respec allowed me to do that often.
This is a great review. You're rapid-firing through all the relevant points yet it's still nearly 30 min long. Very comprehensive and complete. Anyone that watches this will have a really good idea of what it's all about.
I'm like, 30-40% of the way with almost 20hrs, Morty just goes and 100% it, what a gamer! as for the game, it's amazing! comparing to GoW Ragnarok - it's not as good a cinematic experience as that one, but definitely better combat IMHO. combat feels like a mix of Bloodborne (dodge based), ghost of tsushima (stances) and GoW (transformation and overall mechanics). so far, would recommend 9.5/10
I kinda disagree with the conclusion that if you're not into action RPGs, you won't be into this game. I don't consider myself an action RPG kinda player at all and I'm having a blast in this game. The art direction and cinematic fights alone are enough to draw me in, I find myself reading all the journal entries and love piecing together the story from those stories and the chapter ending animations as well (which are SO AMAZING). In terms of art direction, the most memorable fight for me personally was the yin-yang taoist ink arena fight. Possibly the most beautiful thing i've ever seen in a game.
The only actual reviewer of the game that actually tells you about the full game. Like other reviewers calling this game linear shows they how little they uncovered from the game
I'm one of the people that likes customized healing. Remnant 2's Relics were a great change to your standard flasks and I'm glad more games are expanding on *use health potion to heal*
I'm really bummed out by the fact that I can't 100% the game in my first playthrough and I need to do M+ (I probably won't bother). Also locking you out of the specific quest (Pillar) in Chapter 4 without me looking it up pissed me off a bit, because I did every other questline up until that point. I did lookup collectibles just before the final boss and now I realized that there are some NG+ specific achievements to finish some of them off (which I won't bother). I really enjoyed my time with the game (over 50h+ played) and its my GOTY. I am looking forward to other games this year, but I don't think anything can top it. I hope Game science will do more legends with "Black Myth" series, because Dynasty Warriors or the legends from that game is a perfect choice (Lu Bu for example). Thanks for the review Mort!
I had uninstalled this after chapter 2 because the invisible walls were driving me insane but you have convinced me to give it another shot! I think I was just trying to fit this into the souls category and it’s really its own thing
The reason why wukong’s power failed him is because the crown that was put on him during journey to the west was activated, he thought it was taken off after the journey had ended. The celestial court lied to him.
aight bro I had to come back to this review after playing the game. Saying it is not hard is a STREEETCH. I have played almost all the fromsoft games and this is right up there on the same level. if you like a challenge you will like this game! super fun! other than that solid review 😂
Ok does anyone know what is causing those strings / ropes to jump and jitter @9:22. I see this happen in many games with physics, why it's so prevalent?
Only thing I thought you could have added was the mention of the end of act stories. They were of high quality and added a nuanced flavour to what you have accomplished in the act

What I like about the armors being able to be upgraded is that sometimes you can have bad stats on one that looks really good and vice versa but the moment you upgrade the good-looking one you now have one that you like and that is powerful. But generally, I like when you can get the effects of one and the looks of another as long as you have both. I have played a few games that does this. While this game is not one of them at least I can make the ones I like to be more powerful.
The mount mei secret area fights of act 3 (?), the one related to the good ending are by far my favourites, especially the ones after the initial one, i was like WTF IS GOING ON THIS SHIZZ IS AMAZING ! =))
It is an awesome game, nothing much to say about that. If you like the likes of Nioh, GoW and the likes I think you will love this game. If you do not like those cheesy hack-n-slash games that heavily relies on pressing buttons really fast then you will not like this game. As simple as that tbh the game is a dodge simulator that is increasingly easier and easier the later you got into the game, and tbh the game is like a boss gauntlet at least it feels that way you will run into a boss every 2 minutes or so in the span of 30~ish hrs or so unless you really want all those 81 achievements or sth. Also at the highest specs the game is flawless, the better PC you got the less the game is likely to crash or bug out, but tbh even on a weaker self-built PC like I got (AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, Radeon GX 7900, RAM 32 GB) crashes/bugs rarely happen like once in 10 hours or so so imho it is very polished and optimized. Mind you the game is very confusing as there is NO MAP so unless you abuse Google there is a high chance you will get lost a decent amount of times so... Yeah BM: Wukong isn't for everyone tbh.
The speed at which you can do these amazes me.

It's a boss rush. It's not that deep.
The game is lacking in some aspects. That is why he called it an action-adventure instead of Action RPG. Black Myth: Wukong has good combat, fun for those who like games who are boss rush but the rest is average.
exactly. Other reviews hurt my brain.
@@Kenzirs It can be if you rush through the game
@@Kenzirs Yep, it's a boss rush and it's pretty damn good at that. The exploration/traversal is the frustrating part.
Only bought it because I was sick this weekend and needed something to pass the time while I sit in my room.
i bought it but couldn't get it to run properly on my low end laptop on lo settings
@@timj6739 I couldn't get it to run on my sega megadrive either
When I want a good, concise but thorough review I always come here. Not disappointed this time either :) Thank you! Great job as always.
After Dragons Dogma 2 extremely disappointing enemy variety seeing how wukong takes this aspect to the next level really solidified it as one of the best action games for me, this aspect has been a constant disappointment in so many triple A games outside of fromsoft.
Man the lack of variety in dd2 did take the sail out the winds for me but hearing how many are in this game got me feeling frraeeekkkyyy
Fromsoft has good enemy variety? Was it just me that got numb after the 19th night’s cavalry and the 69th tree sentinel?
Level design is way worse in BMW than in DD2 tho
@@winchesterkid Everything. Invisible walls is the core issue here. If the game doesn't tell you where to go - it's a bad level design. Exploration being dumped by an invisible wall - an issue too.
Secrets are cool and all, but as far as I know, BMW has a big problem with invisible walls and getting lost in general. TO the point where it's frustrating.
@@Mahalleinir I could list over 200 unique enemies in elden ring lmfao, the game is just so big that there has to be repeats even though it does get stale when they do overuse some of them
We don’t talk about the cinematic cutscenes? And those animations after each chapter. And the level of the details you can see on every perspectives man. Shout out to devs. They really put tons of effort into this game and if you have happened know journey to the west you can pick off most of the references really quickly
Its unreal engine 5. Is there a single game in this engine that wont look this good?
@@Blueslyfox there are a lot of feature length anime style cutscenes throughout the chapters, that is clearly outside the unreal system, amongst the other artistic paintings etc which hint on the countless amount of production from multiple types of artists, way outside the computer graphics sense.
You do amazing work sir! This is one that I’ve been waiting years for. I am falling in love with this game and I’m having a hard time finding complaints myself. Other than a few performance issues and not understanding the story at all. I am enjoying this game way too much!
I always wait for your guides, especially if I haven’t bought the game yet but even if I have love watching the videos just kind of know what the game’s gonna give me in the future. Keep up the great work.
Love when a 30 min video saves me a bunch of time and money. Much appreciated.
Me too.
And still glad it's doing well!
The journal entries are one of my favorite parts.
I looked through them like I was sifting for gold, looking for the golden nugget that provides more detail about what’s going on.
Incredible review, the most detailed I’ve seen so far!!! Congrats!
@@DassVeryGood yeah, I think gamers might've adapted into liking the common block/parry system cause Elden Ring.
Dude Im barely at the end of chapter 2. Mort is a BEAST. loved the review. Glad you enjoyed it so much.
was waiting for Your review. Now off to the shop :) to get it. Cheers buddy!!
God I’m having such a blast with this game so far. Just entered chapter 4, so PLENTY of bonking left to do.
Saying this games isn’t “hard” is a little misleading. To the average gamer this will definitely be a difficulty spike. Respect for the 100% though!
Yeah its kicking my ass, took 9 hours to get to chapter 2
@@xuanzhang8808 i think wukong is harder then ds1 ds3 and elden ring. im personally struggling with it more then those 3 souls games ive played alot
I'm already interested in seeing what this company does next.
How does it look graphically?
@@TSmith2410 it’s a looker but I’m not normally a framerate Nazi so… not sure if I’m the best person to ask.
Interesting take. I was frustrated by the invisible walls, but what you said makes me feel better about them.

Til you meet white clad lol.
This crazy man did it again. I cant tell you how much I look forward to your reviews. Keep doing God's work Mort!!!
Shout out to Mortis. One of the best reviewers out there
Thank you, Mortismal! I was waiting for your review to know if I played it now or later :)
Damn, I had no idea the game was actually so deep. I love love LOVE games with significant progression systems.
The devs also filling the game with a lot of missable completely optional content is a pretty bold move.
Phenomenal game. Deserves highest possible praises.
As a KBM gamer myself, I had to use Razer macros to bind my Mouse Buttons to keyboard keys and play this way. It worked really well :D
The game does lose 30-40fps in some sections (so far there's one area in Chapter 2 that always loses 30-40fps for me, not sure why, the combat there was terrible lol).
Thanks for the review. Your opinion is greatly appreciated!!
This is a great review. You're rapid-firing through all the relevant points yet it's still nearly 30 min long. Very comprehensive and complete. Anyone that watches this will have a really good idea of what it's all about.
I was legit looking for your review yesterday, glad you posted it.
Morty giving me a reason to get up in the morning
what an amazing review
I'm like, 30-40% of the way with almost 20hrs, Morty just goes and 100% it, what a gamer!
as for the game, it's amazing! comparing to GoW Ragnarok - it's not as good a cinematic experience as that one, but definitely better combat IMHO. combat feels like a mix of Bloodborne (dodge based), ghost of tsushima (stances) and GoW (transformation and overall mechanics).
so far, would recommend 9.5/10
9.5 out of 10? Damn we were playing different games. 6/10 at best for me
I'm up to the final boss (I think I am anyways), and I'd agree with everytihng you said. Another fairly spoken review.

I’m almost done with chapter 3 I got the game 2 days ago 20 hours in , you blow my mind with your progress
I meant that more as 'if you actively dislike the genre, this isn't gonna change your mind'
Great video, I loved the amount of relevant information without getting to specific and boring. Keep it up
Awesome review, man!
The only actual reviewer of the game that actually tells you about the full game. Like other reviewers calling this game linear shows they how little they uncovered from the game

Finally opinion of this game from a youtuber that I really respect! Thanks Mortyr
I always be awed that Mort uses keyboard and mouse on every games.

Very impressive review.
Your dedication to 100%ing games is commendable .

GAME OF THE YEAR I THINK. NICE REVIEW.
Wow much respect the game dropped 5 days ago
Let's goo!!! Nice review!!
Yeah BM: Wukong isn't for everyone tbh.
a 900$ graphics card tht is the second best that AMD makes is "weaker" to you?
