Yeah, at a time were developers were often charging people for content that was made pre release, SP made an entire free mode with dozens of hours of content. The fact the gameplay deviates from the main game is actually more impressive in that sense because it’s both free and relatively original. I experienced the "Hold Button" bug quite a lot through my playthrough. So much so that I had to change my mentality about the main character. I turned it into a Strong Belwas (from A Song of Ice and Fire) simulator: "Strong Belwas they name me in the fighting pits of Meereen. Never did I lose. I let each man cut me once, before I kill him. Count the cuts and you will know how many Strong Belwas has slain." Also, one issue that was particularly vexing to me was the Perfect Dodge and Perfect Parry windows are sometimes modified or non-existent depending on the duel opponent. For example, on the DLC island of Iki, there is a bokken tournament where the final opponent is Sao. If you wear the armor that increases the Perfect Dodge and Perfect Parry window, it breaks the dodge and parry completely, meaning you can't win without cheesing it. Changing to a different armor fixed that, but took me way too long to diagnose that issue.

Great review, as always 🙂 I remember playing GoT for the first time on PS4 right after its release and how it blew me away - the story, the soundtrack, the atmosphere... It doesn't reinvent the wheel with regard to open world design, but it manages to make parts of the collectathon so enjoyable. I'm currently replaying it on PC, and the slow, thoughtful moments (hot springs, haikus) capture me a lot more than during my first playthrough years ago. Really looking forward to finishing the main game and moving on to Iki Island for the first time.

Good review and very fair points. In my initial response I totally forgot about the guiding wind gameplay mechanic. 100% Agree that this is a very lore and gameplay friendly way to guide around the player, without taking that person out of the gameplay. A novel idea and well executed in GoT. Would love to see that (or its equivalent) back in more games.

The upshot on the open world seems to be that it doesn't do anything revolutionary, but it does so with an absolute ton of style and flash. That matches really well with my own time with the game back when it first came out. I cleared every map marker, did every sidequest, and enjoyed almost every minute of it. Even the stuff that felt a little repetitive and checkbox-ey was presented in such a cool way that I didn't mind at all.

One thing I like about this channel is Mortismal always acknowledges he is a content creator and that can influence his view of the game if he’s not careful. For example, noting that performance was affected by the need to record video. Sounds minor, but so many content creator reviewers talk games down if they have issues recording, or the game is too long, or they don’t get a review copy, or the game takes time to get into.

I really like the small things this game offered. You can sometimes find boards with signs like flute or bowing plastered on its surface and if you do it, you can get pretty funny moments (like suddenly tens of frogs coming out of the ground). You can also bow to pay respect to any dead civilian you encounter in the wild and Jin will give interesting one liner.
The saving grace for the DLC is that you can pet cats, deers, and monkeys. They’re so freaking adorable! 😂

The scope is limited, but there's a good bit of co-op nuance to beating some of the more difficult challenges. Once you beat the single player, there isn't much to do, but the multiplayer definitely continues to scratch that samurai itch. Does a good job of extending the game for a few weeks imo without being a huge unnecessary grind.

You should try to get in contact with either a PR person or Sony PR themselves given they recently stated that they are going to place a much higher emphasis on supporting the PC going forward. Your reviews are fantastic and will definitely show said PR people who they'd be working with. I say this because I got a PS5 earlier in the year for FF7Rebirth & given my PC is in that awkward stage where to upgrade it is to replace the mobo & everything else basically, due to finances I just picked up a PS5. As such, i'm now looking into what I can use the PS5 for now that i'm done with FF7 & Bloodborne, the only two playstation things I knew I wanted to play - even if this is the PC review, it sold me on picking up the PS5 directors cut :P TL;DR - Good review, I'll pick it up when i'm done with Demons Souls :P

Lethal feels like a whole different game… for me it feels like cinematic hyper realism… like you would have to act if you were really there. I have to do a lot more stealth, use the bow way more, and really think about positioning and not getting mobbed by enemies.
It’s making the game take forever and every little thing can pose a challenge but it feels more like a “real” movie-like sword fight more than any other game I’ve played.

Finished this game last night and was thoroughly impressed. Great story that was predictable in many ways, but it still felt fantastic. For those who have a dualsense controller, it works wonderfully on PC. It took me 10-15 minutes at the end of the game to make my final choice as both felt compelling.

The Standoff mechanic bug, where it doesn't see your button press, is not a problem on Xbox Controllers, ironically.
I was using my PS5 controller and it was about a 50% chance to not be able to use the mechanic, so I was avoiding it. Then I tried with my Xbox controller as a friend had mentioned he never had that bug. I haven't seen the bug since.

This was such a beautiful world. The stances made combat enthralling. Yes, you can batter “triangle” or “Y”, and hulk your way to victory, but the real skill is playing in your broken armour and slaying 5/6 guys perfectly. Japan is beautiful.

I loved the wind direction mechanic and i wish every game had them from now one since i hate giant hud on my screen. I loved exploring the map and appreciating the visuals without giant map and 50 markers 24/7 on my screen. Only things i really hated was how limited and hand holdy the grappling hook was with almost no free movement like Uncharted or Star Wars, also i wish more side quests had bigger and varied rewards like the main missions cause i didn't really care about the legend rank ups since i already had all the stuff i wanted by the end of act 1.

Just finished the game, except the Iki Island, but I agree 99% with what you are saying, the 1% is that I'm having mixed feelings if this game was worth the price of 60 Euros, considering that it's a PC port, like you just said no groundbreaking game-play, I mean it sometimes felt like regurgitated AC mechanics, and I can also add some clunky interactions in combat, small character interactions felt like AC Origins which felt without substance, and others. At the beginning, in the first zone I feel in love with the game after the Tengu Demon duel, I mean like everything about that was cool and challenging, but later down the road it felt more and more easy and repetitive, so much so that I felt that I wanted it to end, but because the story was so good it kept me going. My advice, play it for the story, don't think too much about the game-play. I usually play the games at the hardest difficulty, but Lethal felt wrong in multiple ways, so I went with Hard and was challenging for at least 30% of my play time but that was it.

I played it when it came out and was surprised on how much I enjoyed it… I literally expected the same old open world nonsense, I am probably in the minority but I do enjoy a decent amount of open world games but I usually tap out 75-80% of the way because of being a father that games... and there’s usually a new game that I want to play that comes out. It was a good length, didn’t over stay its welcome to me. Glad you enjoyed it as much as you did.

Been playing solely on the deck and it runs beautifully, though the deck does get extremely hot. Agree with your verdict that this is a standard open world checklist game with an incredibly beautiful and fresh coat of paint. However, the underlying system is repetitive and gets tired after a while. In some ways it reminds me a lot of AC:Odyssey, which is the last of such games I played and which I never finished. I played a lot of it when the PC version released and am halfway through Act 2. But I've definitely developed fatigue and am putting it down in favour of other games like Eiyuden Chronicle. I imagine I'll return to it when I have a samurai itch to scratch again. But it's the kind of game that for me is very easy to burn out from.

For me the story was good but predictable. The actors did a great job throughout. But the combat's what made it great, the flow and how the animations connect are just incredible not to mention the gory finishers. Finally this is among the few games that caused me to just stop and take in the scenery because it was that beautiful.
