- Ithaka presents the meaning of life, achieving one's goals, and taking on the ultimate journey to fulfill one's life pursuit. While you are on this journey, you will encounter many a stumbling block, but if you are steadfast in following your dreams, nothing will bother you.
Ithaka by C.P. Cavafy
As you set out for Ithaka
hope your journey is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.
Laistrygonians, Cyclops,
angry Poseidon-don’t be afraid of them:
you’ll never find things like that on your way
as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare excitement
stirs your spirit and your body.
Laistrygonians, Cyclops,
wild Poseidon-you won’t encounter them
unless you bring them along inside your soul,
unless your soul sets them up in front of you.
Hope your journey is a long one.
May there be many summer mornings when,
with what pleasure, what joy,
you enter harbors you’re seeing for the first time;
may you stop at Phoenician trading stations
to buy fine things,
mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
sensual perfume of every kind-
as many sensual perfumes as you can;
and may you visit many Egyptian cities
to learn and go on learning from their scholars.
Keep Ithaka always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you’re destined for.
But don’t hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so you’re old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you’ve gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaka to make you rich.
Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey.
Without her you wouldn't have set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.
And if you find her poor, Ithaka won’t have fooled you.
Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,
you’ll have understood by then what these Ithakas mean.
“Shyclops, angry Poshidons” love Sean Connery
Shaken, not shtirred 😅
Yesh Sean came over on Shaterday night for a wee game of Parcheeshee...aye twash gud!
This is the first time I have ever heard this poem, and I'm so glad it's in his voice.
God shave the Queen. 🪒 👸
That’s not what I shaid!
You mean “Shean” Connery XD
A life's philosophy in a few sentences. Can't hold my tears. Have a good journey my frienfs. May we all meet at Ithaka
To be honest, Sean Connery could read a grocery list and I'd be transfixed.
Yesss, amazing voice❤
Maybe... But even the grocery man could read K. KAVAFI make you transfixed... ❤
Back in the 50s, it was said Yves Montand could read the telephone book, and women would swoon. Sean Connery is a more modern version of that.
totally!
Yes:))
We're taught this poem as teenagers in greek schools. I was always interested in the humanities and poetry even then, but the beautiful thing about this poem is that it touches everyone, regardless their interests. I remember even the most indifferent student, put effort to participate in this specific class...
We study Cabafy in Greece but not enough.
Same for Kazantzakis and Sikelianos.
We are busy searching for grades without building the values structure to be backbone of the search.
Now we require to build the free time and motivation to study those and other wroters at later stages of life.
I remember being taught this in Greek class and being totally fascinated . I would’ve been 15 years old, young and naive but was captured by the depth of the poem. I was excited to grow up and experience life and gain wisdom . It made me wonder about what my journey would be like .
He knows not where he’s going , For the Ocean will decide , For it’s not the Destination , But the glory of the ride
Cavafy is one of my favorite poets... Connery is one of my favorite actors.. This video is perfect
Have never heard this poem before; I hope never to unhear it! Beautiful!!
This poem was recited at Jackie Onassis 's funeral.
Wow. I had no idea. What a loss to the world. RIP - Sean Connery.
Ithaka was a very close family friends favorite poem. She passed on Feb 1st. I've known her since I can remember & I'm still close friends with her children. This poem fits her perfectly !!
Sounds like she had a wonderful soul! So sorry for your loss.
I am a devoted reader of Cavafy : It is an experience to hear * Ithaka* read by the late Sir Sean Connery. Thank you.
Whats your favourtie Kavafis poem? Mine is deffinetely The God abandonds Antony. Totally different experience reading it in Greek as well !
I’m so moved by the poem and by Sean”s voice!
Glad to share it
Sean Connery could read the yellow pages & I'd be happy.
May there be many summer mornings.
God rest you our son of Scotland.
Mr. Connery your voice was magnificent and I loved your acting...R.I.P. you were an amazing human being...😇❤💐🌺🌹⚘🌸🌺💐🌹🌼⚘🌺
No he wasn't. He wasn't nice at all.
Such a lovely and beautiful reminder that we each have our personal journeys to make towards our own “Ithaka” -our Destiny.♥️
“But do not hurry the journey at all…not expecting Ithaka to make you rich.”🌻♥️
Nada es una casualidad, que poema mas hermoso e inspirador parto mi camino hacia Itaca. 🥰🥰🥰
Wow, it's so beautiful so inspiring. It's all about the process! End result is trivial.
1.45 is definitely worth multiple replays just to hear Sean say 'Sensual'.
His voice reverberates through the years.
This is just overwhelming!
Not all things are the same. There are differences in this world, however, a rose by any other name still smells as sweet!
beautiful voice, thanks Sean
The clips have nothing to do with the poem . When Cavafy said “and then when you're old to stay on the island, wealthy with all you've gained on the way” ( 2:24 ) I’m pretty sure he wasn’t talking about two old tourists having a gondola ride in Venice.
My thoughts exactly 🤣
I just sailed to Ithika for the first time a few months ago and thought it would be so much nicer if they had put images of the actual island (really breath taking).
Isn’t Ithaca “home?”
I miss Sean very much.
My favourite poem.
A Big BRAVOOO from me a Caring GREEK, to Konstantinos Kavafis, our Greek Poet of 1920, to You, dear Publisher of this AudioVideo and to Sean Connery for his Esteem to this Greek Poem!!!

RIP Sir Connery.
Sean Connery, "As I shat in my lounge a book fell on my head. I can only blame myshelf."
underrated comment
I would very much enjoy watching the reader of the poetry actually reading the poetry rather than watching these videos - don’t get me wrong, the videos are lovely but I would much rather see Sean ‼️‼️
Yeah would be much better without the music too
agreed
YES
I had no idea that something like this even existed.
Knock Knock
Who’s there?
Dishes.
Dishes who?

Falguni Nayyar
NAAYKA
Just bought Bombay mix, thanks Amazon.
When was this recorded? Love Mr. Connery's voice :)
It was recorded by Sean in 2004
In the original version Connery did it together with Vangelis, Vangelis background music.
R.I.P.BROTER...
I’m nearly there…
I can see him saying this to Connor mcCleod… the Highlander
It's not that the common worker has forgotten the government. They feel the government has forgotten them. Some how it's left up to the government to change that idea maybe. All votes matter.
aye

👍👍👍
“But whether in calm or wrack-wreath, whether by dark or day,
I heave them whole to the conger or rip their plates away,
First of the scattered legions, under a shrieking sky,
Dipping between the rollers, the English Flag goes by.
“The dead dumb fog hath wrapped it-the frozen dews have kissed-
The naked stars have seen it, a fellow-star in the mist.
What is the Flag of England? Ye have but my breath to dare,
Ye have but my waves to conquer. Go forth, for it is there!”
Rudyard Kipling The English Flag.
Would like to know when this was recorded
2004
If you find her poor Ithaka wont have fooled you… she gave you the journey nothing more to give you now
When did he read this?
I don't like English poetry, because it has no rhythm and thus should be called prose which I love. However I love Sean Connery's accent and voishe ♥
Didn't I see this last night on Jimmy Kimmel? No... no I did not.
Not sure Penelope and Telemachus in the Odyssey would second the whole "Hope it lasts for years" thing...
You're missing the message of the poem. The journey he's speaking of is your own life's Odyssey. He's wishing you a long and happy one, full of wonder and experience.
Hy sean hy daddy
Anyone else notice the little boy, at about 2:05, step in camel dung and wipe it off his shoe ? .......... I saw it on my way to, "learn and learn again from those who know," while traveling to Ithaka. (lol)
With Vangelis music it is better.
Though one can understand the message of the poem when translated in English I find it loses something of its authenticity.
Would you prefer that it was reserved for the people who speak the language in which it was originally written?
Name the real ‘few’ demons.
Poor quality dub of the audio
I wanted to like this but the audio is horrid.
also this isn't a poem, this is an advertisement...(The audio makes sense now.)
Your mother Trebek 😂
How much do these actors get paid to do this?
I'm sorry, I adore this poem and I think Connery is gorgeous, but shetting out on a journey of dishcovery was just too much.
Wonderful poem. But I didn't care for Connery's reading. His accent seemed out rhythm with the Mediterranean atmosphere engendered by the words.
