I have my Ithaca. A tragic and beautiful woman from Greece. I traveled half way across the world for her believing we were meant to be together. Even though we no longer speak I found my home, my people, and my life.

This poem is about far more than Greece... This is a mystic poem creating a metaphor for one's life by using the imagery of Homer's story. The journey is far more valuable than reaching the end. 👁🙏

I'm not sure if Ithaca is death. Maybe it's a lifetime's target, a long time goal to achieve. For which of course the `marvelous journey` is the most important part: Fighting for it, expecting it, visioning it, devote fully one's body and soul for it.
For me, a Greek person being now away in Germany for in[de]finite time, Ithaca is simply Greece itself: My poor bleeding mother, my bitter home country from which I left disappointed, to become wiser with years and maybe appreciate and go back...

    • @calliope8muse
      @calliope8muse 4 года назад +8

No Ithaca is not death. Ithaca is home, Ithaca is your goal and whatever you or your soul are longing to return to. Have a read of Oddysey and the journeys he went through for 14 years before he came back to his Ithaca. Even better visit the Island and then you will understand my friend. "Ithaca's" are about life ;-)

Arriving there is what you’re destined for.
But don’t hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so you’re old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you’ve gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaka to make you rich.
Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey.

Because Greek is unparallel the most beautiful and rich language of the world. It is a language which was invented to explain the meaning of the universe, engaging with astronomy, science, drama, historiography, philosophy and of course political ideas such as democracy. Greek is the only language that is able to describe anything with only one word. This is the true legacy of for the moderns Greeks, our language.

@@innosanto Of course there is. That is the whole point underlying Cavafy's masterful poem. But you don't need to read it all. It is enough to know that the Odyssey is about Ulysses's ten-year journey back home at the end of the Trojan war - victorious, on his way home to his faithful wife waiting for him, but first he must pass through incredible, fearful adventures and temptations that shape him as a man, much more than his glorious participation in the Trojan war had done.
Read also Tennyson's "Ulysses". A completely different take - it happens AFTER Ulysses reached home - but just as epic.
Ulysses is regarded as the archetype of Western man: clever, crafty, impetuous, alyays looking for something better.

phoenix1925 I might have guessed, but then someone must have translated it. Surely not Sir Sean or Vangelis? Or even Google translate? The translator isn’t mentioned anywhere. - Anyhow, this poem is one of my most treasured favourites.

My favorite poem, always a part of my mp3 player.
Atm, I'm reading The Odyssey of Homer.
I need an Ithaca to journey back to, so I can mature my soul, as Cavafy points out in this absolutely flabbergasting combination of music, text, voice, and meaning.

Peaceful.. irreplaceable beauty sourced and rooted deeply into the surface of the soul. We go to where we started in the beginning. Yet, the beginning is in fact continuation of something that can not be defined nor by time dimension, neither by place. Timeless and endless. Spiral of eternity comparable only with itself. One - Junction of all.

" The journey is our life. Ithaka is our death. Think of the poem by this view.... "
Maybe not our death, but our final moments before death.
My favorite view than all. Well done. :)

All I know is that people like Vangelis should never die. Vangelis music has touched my soul since I was a boy and now almost 60 there has not been a week without at least a few pieces of music from his albums playing in our home. I don’t understand why the soundtrack to this documentary isn’t available. Release the Kraken Vangelis. Please!!!!
