Super Monaco GP (スーパーモナコGP) is an arcade-style Formula One racing sim released in arcades and multiple platforms by Sega Corporation in 1989. It is a sequel to the arcade game Monaco GP.
The arcade game consists mostly of one race: the Grand Prix of Monaco (though represented by a totally different track, albeit with the same features of the real-life Circuit de Monaco). The player simply chooses a transmission type, qualifies, and race. The player must qualify in under 45 seconds in the shortened track in order to actually race. If he fails, the game ends (though, in the home versions, even if the player fails to qualify, he still starts off the race at the last position). When in the race itself, there is also a position limit, which starts off on 20th (15th in the home versions) and decreases as the player bypasses checkpoints along the track, ultimately stopping on 3rd. If the player falls behind the indicated position and does not manage to recover fast enough, a game over happens.
The game was one of the first to include a rear-view mirror.[citation needed]
The Sega Mega Drive/Genesis version of Super Monaco GP adds a World Championship mode. In the World Championship mode, the goal is to win a season of races, and then go on to defend the title. The circuits are modeled on the ones used in the 1989 Formula One season, with background scenery similar to the real-world circuit venues, though without the wealth of details the Arcade version had.
The Mega Drive version was highly acclaimed, garnering an at-the-time-unprecedented 10--10--9--9 rating from Electronic Gaming Monthly's Review Crew and a 93% from Mean Machines.
Sega was sued by Philip Morris over the arcade game among others (including Namco's Final Lap) because the unauthorized presence of the Marlboro trademark in the game (although in Super Monaco GP's case, the offending advertisement, among with all advertisements in the game, except for Flicky, another Sega game, were deliberately misspelled) where it appeared on the real life tracks, was seen as compromising their policy against advertising to children and teenagers.

I made a Several attempts to get footage for Super Monaco GP for the PS 2 but due to graphical errors beyond my control. I could not attain the footage. Secondly, There is a glitch on MAME that makes the announcer say " it's the final lap" This is a common glitch & occurs in most other videos of this on youtube. There was nothing I could do to resolve it. Sorry Guys ! I just didn't want to put this video off any longer.
When I first saw this in the arcades, I remember being very impressed with the road bobbing up and down. It gave a sense of 3D graphics, at an era when most graphics were still sprites-based. I wonder how easy it was to code that particular element?
The Amiga version is very good, it is true that the Megadrive version got more detail, but they are pretty similar. I prefer the engine sound of the Amiga version.
I had the genesis version and managed to become very good at this game, I played with manual shift and won the two seasons easily. Great game, too bad I didn't owned the follow-up, Ayrton Senna's Super Monaco GP 2, it looked much better.
It may have seemed better but it wasn't
It was just more of the same really.

I played the heck out of the Megadrive version back in the day. Loved it.
@@simonp5788 Same
Great vid. I played, and played the Amiga version to death. I thought it was a great F1 game back then. I think it still holds up well today!
NICE DRIVING!
Gawd, I played this game so much. the music has given me the gamer equivalent of Nam flashbacks.
the ad for flicky is too cute.^^
Man I loved this game. I didn't know it had soooo many ports lol, I only knew of the Sega Genesis and Arcade. I got so good at the game over time that I challenged the A Class, particularly Madonna and got on their team by race 3. Brazil was a beast lol
Brazil was the biggest pain in the but to deal with in the starter car. After that it's smooth sailing.
Is it wrong for me to say that I feel joy whenever a new video of yours comes out?
Nothing wrong with that ! :D It makes me happy that people enjoy & look foreword to these videos. :) Thank you !
you did not do the sega cd version on the sega classics disc it has sound that was updated the scrolling is smoother too because of the sega cd sprite scale it was updated somewhat
I guess the Mega CD version wasn't included because it is the same graphically than the Mega Drive one, but it does have better voice samples and sound effects I think.
The lady in the zx spectrum version looks like an alien
17:35 to 17:37 I LOVE IT!
The Speccy version doesn't look too great which is a shame as it's my favourite 8 bit computer.
I always liked the Mega Drive version as it plays really well.
Great video :)
atik1798 The spectrum version is much better than some other spec versions of games.
Master System and Game Gear version not even trying to be like Super Monaco. I did love playing the Game Gear version though.
I love Super Monaco GP on Mega Drive!
I've played both Super Monaco 1 and Super Monaco 2 and my personal preference was to use the 7 speed gearbox, which was faster
You could go round all of the tracks in the Genesis version without slowing down if I remember correctly! =)
Best MD Racer by a Mile.
Only SEGA console version of powerdrift I know of was the Saturn Version.
Out of all consoles and computers, they had to choose the ZX Spectrum.
Read a few comments regarding the Megadrive version and the poor graphical comparison from the arcade, the arcade game run upon Sega's Super Scaler arcade board that gave birth to the likes of Space Harrier and Outrun and a host of other scaled games. The Megadrive hardware is a scaled down version of Sega's System 16 technology that hosted the likes of Golden axe and -Eswat. The Super scaler technology was considerably more expensive than System 16 as the latter was a budget arcade board.
*Spectrum and Mega Drive!*
In terms of music the c64 version dominates.
The ZX Spectrum's tire sound effect is cool but inaccurate in rl. :)
It does not seem to have any glaringly bad ports, even the Amstrad CPC was pulling a decent non-Spectrum conversion, if a little bit choppy.
Master System version = Pit Stop II?
Game Gear = Pole Position?
The 16-bit versions are nice, but neither comes even close to the details of the arcade.
where is Monaco c64 version? it is country track
I thought the Genesis had it until I saw the Amiga version.
Love Super Monaco? Take a look at this updated version like F1! ruclips.net/video/BN24gVI_eXE/видео.html with a Senna's Global Challenge. Click in Show More to download the game.
Reminds me of GT Sport
I find it kind of ironic that the Amiga version had inferior sound & better graphics when most of their game comparisons had the Genesis with poor sound (using what seems to be almost a soundboard of Genesis generic sounds) whilst having better graphics.
I bought the Monaco for Genesis on day-1. I liked but disliked it, because I was kind of pissed it had none of the foreground artwork like the arcade that I played the hell out of, but I dug the sound F/X, and enjoyed the replay value w/ the additional tracks.
That's gotta be the most ridiculous tire squealing noise i've ever heard, in the arcade version that os
It's terrible.
It has bees in the engine no doubt ! ~_^
The master system is just PitStop II
Why does an F1 car need a rear-view mirror?
*So they don’t crash!!* 💡
8-bit The Amstrad CPC and Master System version actually look and play nice. The Gamegear version - due to the smaller screen plays even smoother.
16-bit: Amiga version is pretty cool, Genesis / Megadrive version is okay in my opinion.
I find the 8bit Gamegear the most amazing effort.
For some reason, my rose colored glasses remembered the Genesis port to be better than it is. Those downshift samples are hideous.
Sometimes I wonder, why even bother porting arcade games to consoles if they're just gonna look bad.
Because it was the best they could do at the time and have it still be affordable to consumers. Bringing arcade games home was what the market wanted back then unlike today where arcades aren't the place where game technology is pushed anymore. SNK went the route of basically just selling the arcade hardware with the Neo Geo and it priced most people out. At least in the case of the Genesis version of this game Sega was able to keep the gameplay intact and offered a championship mode that arguably made the game better than the arcade version in the gameplay department. It might not be as pretty as the arcade game but it's a classic game in the MD/Gen library.

Sega genesis version was the best by far.
Look at the Genesis version, such a lazy port, like so many ports by SEGA of their own arcade games. There is barely any art. They couldn't even get the scaling right. The myth that SEGA Genesis couldn't do scaling and rotation, is just that, a myth.
Genesis was released in 1988/89. The game was ported in 1989. Do you honestly expect that after one year of being on the market, game coders could have gotten all out of the system?
I remember in the ads in EGM, they used arcade screen shots in the Genesis ad. Then when I got this game I was like, "Talk about false advertising."
The Genny version played great though, they added a decent amount of depth to that game for the time.
Consoles like the Sega Genesis had limits when it came to hardware as opposed to the arcade versions which used additional graphic and sound chips and PCB boards, which are large in space, mind you. Not every arcade port is going to be a perfect interpretation on the Genesis, even if it's by the same company.
Understood, but the Genesis version didn't have to be that bad. Their is barely any sprites. Look how many sprites and how smooth the scaling is in Road Rash for SEGA. Lazy ports= Altered Beast for SEGA GENESIS...The SEGA Genesis was very capable of replicating their Arcade games. That's the attitude of SEGA. "eeehhhhh, it's good enough." haha
Amiga wins this
Your days are gone!
Please explain ?
@@GamingHistorySource It's the Senna-esque racer who challenges you once you've won the world title on the Mega Drive version, and is VERY hard to beat. Lose twice and you lose your Madonna seat, leaving you to defend your title on the back foot. A successful defence means you beat the game.
GENESIS WINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Atari ST version sounds absolutely terrible!
z00ts00t77 It sounds better than a lot of other st games
At least the 16-bits had Vroom, that poops all over this :)
Every version looks like a turd to me, heck the C64 version looks worse than the Speccy version!
The Lotus series, and F1 were good on the Atari ST and Amiga too.
+peloquin Yup - We used to play a lot of those, taking turns on F1 over a whole GP - or linking 2 ST's for 4 player Lotus.... spent a lot of time with those games :)
This game looks pretty poor nowadays. I used to be a fan of the arcade game but even that looks pretty bad. I had the game gear versions which were pretty awful (something that plagued the GG racing games).
adhvideos Then go and play Call of Duty I'm sure you'll LOVE that! #GameplayOverGraphics
NEON 7 i'm all good thanks. For a start, i prefer retro over todays games but there is no denying a lot of rose tinted glasses over some of the old games.
adhvideos Same here. But still, gameplay over graphics.
una verguenza!! cada vez peorr1!! aguante el arcade!!
I won’t subscribe you and I’m not in the mood
All ports are very shitty in comparison to the arcade, even the genesis port sucks
