    Description Source:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rygar
    Rygar is a video game created by Tecmo in 1986 and originally released for arcades in Japan as Warrior of Argus (アルゴスの戦士 Arugosu no Senshi?). It is a scrolling platform game where the player assumes the role as the "Legendary Warrior", battling through a hostile landscape. The main feature of gameplay is using a weapon called the "Diskarmor", a shield with a long chain attached to it.
    Plot
    The arcade game begins with the following introduction:
    4.5 billion years have passed since Earth's creation. Many dominators have ruled in all their glory, but time was their greatest enemy and it defeated their reign. And now a new dominator's reign begins...
    Information gleaned from console manuals reveals that the evil being Ligar has taken over the land of Argool, and Rygar, a dead warrior who has risen from his grave, must use his Diskarmor, along with a variety of other weapons, to stop him. In console versions clues and limited dialogue are given in the form of large, sage-like men encountered in stone green temples throughout the game.
    In the Japanese original, references to "Ligar" and "Rygar" are one and the same because the Roman syllables "Li" and "Ry" come from the same Japanese character. In this version, the hero is only referred to as "The Legendary Warrior", while both "Rygar" and "Ligar" refer to the main villain.
    Gameplay
    The player sends the title character (who did not have a proper name in the Japanese version) through a number of fantastic settings with the ultimate goal of defeating the evil King Ligar in order to restore peace to the realm of Argool (Argus in the Japanese version). To accomplish this goal, Rygar/the Warrior must visit five Indora gods who present him with essential items needed for completion of the game. Each of the Indora gods is located in a different realm, and is almost always guarded by a boss. The player can choose the order in which some stages are played, but since certain items are required to reach new areas, choices are somewhat limited. After playing through the five major realms of the game, he must journey to King Ligar's flying castle for the final confrontation.
    "Ligar" (the final boss) can also be romanized as Rygar because in Japanese there is no distinction between "l" and "r," but the name is written with the syllable ra (ラ) in katakana. The central player character is only known as senshi (the Warrior) in the Japanese version.

    This was the first time I'd heard the Famicom version's music, never knew there was even a difference. The NES version has one of my favorite soundtracks of all time.
    That first level in the Famicom level gave me a total Golgo 13 vibe, like the track wouldn't be an ounce out of place in that game.

    • @joeblusnavage5403
      @joeblusnavage5403 4 года назад +1

      Robert Turner it wasn't necessarily "only available" for the famicom, The fami sent its audio through the cart slot, where the nes sent it straight out the audio jack. Long story short you could include extra audio chips in the famicom carts and add in extra sound, where this wasn't possible at all in the nes.

    • @kadosho02
      @kadosho02 4 года назад

      @@joeblusnavage5403 it something how limited it actually was. To imagine what if the NES was not limited, and could perform the same as the Famicom. But it did the best it could.

    • @joeblusnavage5403
      @joeblusnavage5403 4 года назад +1

      @@kadosho02 Yes, it was crippled because it needed to be somewhat cheap and sync with the "american" market and the "american" standards. Atari ran the video game market (unintentionally) into the ground, and interestingly enough Nintendo saved it.
      What is funny though, is that in some ways the basic nintendo could do "more" then the famicom, even had built in Composite video, they just did nothing with its expansion properties.

It was colourful with nice forest and lake scenery, had cool arcade elements to it.. I quickly decided I'll take it. Get home and start playing my new NES game and.. WTF is this? Where're the colours? The scenery? The arcade feel? Damn it! (not for the first time) Got used it though. Still have it. Still haven't finished it. The last boss is.. just f*cked.. I read that the Pal version though was programmed (intentionally? Glitch?) so it's impossible to finish. Makes sense.

    One of the best versions as far as being faithful to the arcade in regard to speed, sounds, etc is the Lynx. A version was to be released on Amiga, but never surfaced beyond a small alpha demo. Current versions such as on the PS4 are running MAME like emulators, but even the timing is off a bit...perhaps because of the analogue stick. I am assuming the Lynx version is a Lynx PC emulator, for it sounds better on the actual Lynx and looks impressive for such an early handheld...thank you for the video.

    I think we all have very fond memories of Rygar one way or another and we all can admit that the game concept was way ahead of its time (true with the arcade and the NES version!) but I'm pretty impressed with the 8 bit micro computer versions for what they are. The Atari Lynx version looks great but I could never find it even though I owned the console. The Mark III/Sega Master System looks great as well and I can't understand why SEGA never bought it out especially when their console needed as many good games it could get?! It could've challenged the NES version in the market as well and I would've bought that SMS version back in the late 80's!!! What were you thinking SEGA?! And the Sharp version is sublime as it should be...I've never played the PS2 version of Rygar either, wonder what that version was like?!!

    Why did they screw up so many arcade games on the NES/Famicom by making different games ? Its the same with Bionic Commando, Chase HQ and many other games. Screwed up.

    Best to worst (although the worst is pretty good too)
    1. Arcade/Virtual Console
    2. Sharp 68000
    3. Atari Lynx
    4. Commodore 64
    5. Amstrad
    6. Spectrum
    7. NES/Famicom

    • @DangerKennyB
      @DangerKennyB 9 лет назад +5

      You rated the NES below the Spectrum?!? I mean, in my opinion, it's one of the best, but even if you don't dig the alternate take, to rate it below the barf-pile Spectrum version? You're either super-biased, or completely crazy.

    • @scooterahlers6719
      @scooterahlers6719 9 лет назад +2

      Dave - the Spectrum was at least true to the arcade version - given the limitations of the system. The NES version might as well have been a totally different game with the Rygar label slapped on it.
      The NES is one of my favorite consoles and I have at least 20 NES titles on my Wii Virtual Console. I also have Rygar - the ARCADE version on my Virtual Console..

    • @DangerKennyB
      @DangerKennyB 9 лет назад +2

      Just weird to rate it below the others, because even though it's different, it's still a very high-quality game. I can't imagine actually choosing to play the buzz-chirping Speccy version over the amazing NES one.

      Dave Bautistaroid I guess it's because I'm a purist and compare it to the arcade version. The NES is certainly capable of doing an arcade PERFECT version like the Sharp 68000 . And Dave - If you have a Wii/Wii U, you can download it for 800 Wii points.
      As for the Speccy version - that was probably done on a 16kB spectrum as the 48K, and 128K models had sound capabilities comparable to the Commodore 64.
      How about doing a best to worst list of your own Dave - so we can compare.....

      Dave Bautistaroid Do you at least agree that the Commodore 64 and Amstrad versions are BETTER than the NES/Famicom??

      If you're a fan of this series, you should know the Spectrum version always shows up in its weird-color barf-looking cricket-chirping glory.
      On the plus side, it's like an ugly guy or gal in a group of people--it makes the other ones look much better.

    Not surprisingly the Sharp delivers an arcade perfect convention. The 8 bits were such a disappointment really considering that the arcade wasn't graphically too elaborate, the c64 probably pulls off the best port but the spectrum could have been much more detailed and the amstrad had the colour palette to be a fantastic looking game, shame that you could probably jump your way through each level, his jump is far to floaty to be any fun...shouldn't be too surprised with the 8 bits really, it was published by US Gold who were one of the money machines in those days, any old shite will suffice, it's the name that sells!. Lord knows what's going on with the Nes ports, they look decent enough but are just not Rygar, they play and sound like a completely different game. Sega Mk3 and Lynx do try and look okay but again there's just that lack of a polished finish to them, those 2, along with the Nes had the prospects of a good conversion but as with all arcade ports, time and money were probably factors in getting it out there. I had fond memories playing this arcade game in a small arcade at the back of a newsagents in Wakefield, England many moons ago and I got quite good at it, spending all my pocket money on it....ah, the memories! Thank you for the video, all your compare videos are fantastic, please carry on with them, even if they're not arcade comparisons, just compare games like 'Elite' or 'Monty Mole' series.

    I must say, they did a good job with the speccy version, it looks smooth and pretty playable
    Meanwhile, the Amstrad version runs at 2 fucking FPS like usual...
    the C64 is just like the Amstrad version except a lot smoother!
    the NES version... ARGH THAT MUSIC! MY EARS ARE BLEEDING
    the Famicom version is just like the NES version, except that the music is a lot better! Still a little rough on the ears tho.
    the Sega MK3 (japanese master system) version: my God, the SMS sound chip is SO underrated
    Lynx version: DEM SOUND EFFECTS... MAH EARS ART BLEEDING
    Sharp version: Arcade perfect, as usual. In fact, people DEVELOPED arcade games on the Sharp!
