Video Description:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthwor...
Earthworm Jim 2 is a run and gun platform video game starring an earthworm named Jim in a robotic suit who battles evil. It is a sequel to the original Earthworm Jim, and the second and final game in the Earthworm Jim series developed by original creators Doug TenNapel, David Perry, and Shiny Entertainment. It was released in late 1995 and early 1996 depending on region and video game console, initially being released for the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo, before being ported to many other consoles.
Gameplay
The purpose of the game is largely the same as it was in the original Earthworm Jim; traverse through the levels in order to save Princess What's Her Name, and defeat the game's numerous enemies, namely Psy-Crow. However, gameplay is much more diverse than in the first Earthworm Jim.
While the majority of levels are still based on run and gun and platformer game elements, separate levels incorporate different gameplay elements as well. Some levels, such as the opening level, "Anything But Tangerines", and the game's eighth level, "Level Ate", play largely the same as the original Earthworm Jim, with the exception of there being a larger variety of moves at the players disposal. For instance, there are more types of guns to use once found in a level, such as an auto-aiming gun, or the "Barn Blaster" gun which takes out every enemy visible on the screen. Additionally, Jim's friend "Snot" travels with him, and can be used to stick and swing to other slimy green surfaces, or as a parachute, upon jumping.
Other levels stray much farther from this formula. In the third level, "The Villi People," the player must guide Jim, defenseless in the disguise of a blind cave salamander, through intestinal passages, while avoiding exploding sheep and hazards embedded in the floor and walls. The latter part of the level suddenly switches to a game show/trivia format, where the player has to answer nonsensical multiple choice questions that commonly have no logically correct answer. Another level, aptly titled "Inflated Head", has Jim's head inflated much like a balloon, and the player must control Jim as he floats upward, avoiding touching sharp objects which cause him to fall back down to the start of the level, all the while dodging Evil the Cat's attack.
Yet another, "The Flying King", plays as an isometric shooter, with Jim again on his "pocket rocket", where a balloon with a bomb must be directed to the end of the level, and defended from enemies, in order to defeat Major Mucus. The last level of the game is not a typical boss fight, but rather, a race against Psy-Crow through an obstacle course, to get to Princess What's Her Name. The game ends with Jim saving the Princess, but all three characters eventually turning randomly into cows.
Two bosses only appear here, Pedro Pupa, a unicycle riding pupa, and Flaming Yawn, a fire breathing steak. - Игры
Just noticed.Jim can sling a 2 ton weight high into the air ..... But He struggles to carry a pig ... 0_o
you sir are awesome
awww shucks . :D thanks ! You guys are awesome. You make doing this fun.

Wow! The MS-DOS version kicked some serious asses! What a crystal clear soundtrack! And very crisp graphics too!
+HarvestDude the playstation version also served as soundtrack itself, gorgeous sound in big cd systems
@@jcmolero71 yes but it lacked the background / continue of the msdos (just personal opinion) and other very tiny things
With no doubt the MS-DOS version is the best of all versions.
@@commander98123 only downside is they changed some colors, like the pigs and flying octopus
Earthworm Jim: A 2d game ported to 3d consoles. Hammered for being a 2d platformer.
Symphony of the Night: A 2d game ONLY ON 3d consoles. Praised universally as one of the best Metroidvanias ever created.
I don't see your agruement.
Im 4 years late but....damn you're right, some reviewers back then were just as dumb as they are now...
*AAAAAAAAAAAAAA* THE BOOTLEG VERSION MAKES MY EARS *_BLEED_*!
Notice how the ocean in the background on the Playstation is flat without the parallax scrolling that the Saturn version makes use of, if you look at the ocean in the background on the Saturn version it has parallax scrolling which gives it a sense of depth and perspective, on the Playstation version it's just a flat picture, like a flat wallpaper. 2D games like this are exactly what the Saturn was designed for, they are its strong point.
That was one of the reasons the Sega Saturn took the top when I posted it from worst to first.
Gaming History Source Yet there are several games on playstation with many layers of parallax scrolling. Rayman, Lomax, and Castlevania: SOTN to name a few. Considering this is little more than a SNES game I'd call this more of a lazy port than anything else. A good example of great saturn 2D would be capcom fighting games where the sytems extra memory made a difference.
Was going to post exactly the same comment :)
***** That doesn't mean it can't do it, it just means this particular port was done this way. Other 2D games are far better on the PS1, like Castlevania Symphony of the Night due to all the problems the Saturn has rendering transparencies (and a lot of slowdown when in wolf mode too, but that's probably more on the port itself)
The only real advantage the Saturn has is not even part of it's original hardware and that is the RAM expansion carts since both consoles only have 2MB of RAM stock.
Rendering 2D images as textures on top of flat polygons is far less limiting than the old sprite rendering methods used in the past.
SNKega Still, the saturn version looks better in this case
Jesus Christ, the SNES version sounds strange. Looks like someone is playing at the end of a hallway or with a pillow over the loudspeaker.
Its probably the recorder he's using
No, that's just the SNES system's sound quality.
A little more muffled than the rest, but still awesome to me!
"Looks like".."sounds"...🤔
SNES sounds same in all games! Pay attention! Compare any game on it and MegaDrive! Toy Story, BT and DD.... The sound chip gives more samples than on Sega but less bitrate!
I am a huge fan of the SNES version and only have played the PSX one of all those versions. Now, after seeing this video, I can say that you are godamm right. The SNES version soundtrack is strange compared with the Genesis one. Sad. BUT, of course, it doesnt mean that it was bad, as I loved it back in the days and I know that a lot of persons also love it.
DOS version is the smoothest most pleasant version. Music Sound and definitely colors. PC games at that time were pretty clean looking compared to anything else. 20:27 that big fish head is a good example. So many shades of orange and yellow
Sucks that the DOS version is missing some levels and music :-(
No always. Some were a pile of garbage and unplayable in many ways. Was quite difficult to port the controllers on many games.
The game was originally made for the Genesis. The others are "ports" of it. The Saturn version is magnificent.
Juan Carlos Damonte Saturn version is not really that much different from the PSX one and both are underwhelming..
Though the PC version has higher resolution sprites and CD quality audio, it couldn't possibly be much of a straight port.
Saturn has parallax
SNES has that too
@@kevinyagami2612 whats parsllax
This is a fine example of reviewers destroying an awesome game.
On the Saturn and PS1, reviewers hammered it for not being a 3D platformer etc. Most gamers avoided it.
Looking back now. Which 32 bit games have aged better?
+stufaman Both.
Marcel Weber Both?
Both 3D and 2D games have "aged" good imo.
Marcel Weber Me too to be honest.
But a lot of picky gamers curse 32 bit, 3D games nowadays.
You know one I miss?
Jumping Flash. There's a concept I'd love to see come back.
The way I see it is, 3D was in its infancy with the 32 bit systems, while 2D was pretty much perfected by that point. IMO 3D games didn't get timeless graphics until the next generation, aside from a few N64 titles.
Man I was thinking "The GBA version can't be THAT bad."
It's pretty bad you guys.
Then why do i even own that game for GBA and beated it
Because you're a masochist?
jebraymer Don't buy a physical copy. Play it on an emulator.
It's not really worth the money.
Well the GBA wasn't that bad.
Edit : They almost mess up the Jim's voice but this port should be playable.
Like the sound of the MS-DOS version. I think this and the Saturn version are the best smoothest playing versions.
lactobacillusprime all graphics is redrawn with much more colors in DOS port, unlike PSX/Saturn ports.
Oh the glory of Taiwanese bootlegs. Also, my ears are dead now.
Edit: By the way, the GBA version is absolutely horrendous.
***** you can't even see the places where you can use the snot swing.
FUCK THIS GAME.
Man the Gba port is the absolute best. Its the best one alongside menace 2 the galaxy.
Just kidding lol.
Can you give me the definition of "bootleg" in this concept of game / roms? Please
13:49 GroovyAaaaaaahhh! LOL that was funny.
5:35 Gotta love that scream
I actually prefer the genesis and MS dos versions because even though the background doesn't have flashy stuff the coloring of the genesis/msdos version looks like it goes with the foreground. the snes and 32 bit versions backgrounds look like they belong somewhere else. the genesis and dos versions background color is also reflected in the foreground so the lighting coloring makes sense.
Zoddthe Immortal it is ok to have a good taste.
I wish the 32 bit versions kept that background. It does make sense with the rest of the lighting. Red orange light is lit and dark side is blue
thanks I used this video to find out how to use the snot.. completely forgot. Now I'm rocking this game.
Sega Saturn OST is damm good, this game is a timeless hit.
Excellent display of comparison for earthworm jim!
#thumbsup
That bootlag must have caused severe ear bleeding to all those poor kids out there.
Great video!
Nice; Earthworm Jim was pretty fun ;)
This makes me want to play the Saturn version, just for the music alone. Truly a masterpiece!
Earthworm Jim 2 was my favourite game for a long time, played it on windows :)
Ey at least in the famicom bootleg jim doesn't look like he's haveing a mid-life crisis in the top left corner of the screen
The music. DAMN is it good!
That ms-dos version looked great!
Out of all the versions of earthworm jim 1 and 2, here are my favorite versions for each game.
Earthworm Jim: sega genesis, and sega cd.
Earthworm jim 2: sega genesis, and playstation.
Wow, that MS DOS version was surprisingly good. I expected the usual sonic assault and abstract craziness I've seen for other game comparisons.
Also, smh @ those magazine review quotes in the beginning... same shit then as it is now with "port" hate. It's like nobody understands consolidation of media in games, or the appeal of having everything you enjoy or can get on your device/media format of choice.
SotNist but 32-bit console ports are tasteless. reviewers are right.
@@noop9k "A great game - a year ago. On a different console." best review imo
The best are the Mega Drive and Saturn.
What's the problem with the Snes or Dos versions?.
Biggest problem with the SNES version for me is how muffled everything sounds. The music is also too 'bassey' in comparison. There's very few SNES ports I liked due to the, what I feel is personally, inferior audio. The only titles I can think of off the top of my head that I preferred the SNES audio over Genesis audio was for:
Death and Return of Superman
Justice League Task Force
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Most early MK games due to the iconic 'bing' sound effect when selecting characters and such, but that's the only thing.
The MS-DOS version is the version I played as a kid.
And honestly, it's by far the best version.
It has CD quality music, the graphics set is the best, it has the highest graphics resolution, it doesn't have the Lorenzos Soil level, which believe it or not, I never like that much.
So for me the Cleary winner is PC/MS-DOS!
The DOS Versoin corrected the "fail" sound of the instrument that Jim plays at the beggining. Thats nice
A lot of people would've thought that the PC version would come out on top, however back then hardware standardization was nowhere near where it was today. A lot of cards were capable of producing some cutting edge effects, but to get them to come out required programming specific to said card and would more or less stay that way until 3dfx folded.
surprisingly DOS version looks the best
+ilya solomkin I agree but I also think the genesis looks better than the other ports because the background coloring fits with the foreground light reflections. The snes versions backgrounds look out of place as does the 32 bit versions. they got carried away and went to far.
ilya lead4blade Nope lol 😂 😂
1st dos version, 2nd genesis,3rd saturn. genesis sometimes has that less is more thing, not to much fancy bullshit resulting in pure quality and joy.
arjan snijder absolutely. Even DOS version, despite looking gorgeous, loses some charm. PSX/Saturn ones are just crude.
"That thing hurts, you know!"
Wow, what the hell were they thinking when they panned the PS1 and Saturn versions!? The graphics and animation is better, there's CD quality music, and there are even new backgrounds that look really nice. Crazy people.
***** No, they *are* crazy for thinking that way. The better technology meant that they could make the game look even more beautiful and the animation more fluid, and they did that. Who cares if it was 2D? Many 2D games are better then the 3D ones anyway. Look at the Sonic, Contra, and Castlevania series for example. If 2D games were inferior to 3D games, they wouldn't still be making them. Instead, 2D games have made a big comeback during the last 10 years or so.
JMFSpike
Look at how incredible Oddworld Abes Odyssey looked. It was 2d with a mix of 3d cinematic cut scenes. An absolutely AMAZING game for it's day.
JMFSpike Because while the backgrounds for some levels look great, several are really weird and don't mesh well with the sprites at all. Lorenzo's Soil, Puppy Love, ISO 9000 and Level Ate look ugly compared to the SNES version.
JMFSpike How old are you? Just out of curiosity. Obviously we all think this today, but back in 95, 3D games were all the rage and people generally thought 3D>2D for everything. I remember reading a game review for this and it said it is not welcome in the age of polygons. If people back then actually thought like we did now, the Saturn would have been a success.
jc190782
I'm 31. You make a good point, but that was still no excuse. As for the Saturn not being a big success(although it actually was in Japan), I don't think it's graphics had a whole lot to do with it. It was Sega's poor marketing mostly, and the failure of the Sega CD and 32X didn't help either. Also, people loved the more mature games the PS1 had to offer, which very quickly made it hugely popular. The N64 was seen as a great console for multiplayer. The Saturn didn't really do anything unique and different from the others.
I rented this for the SNES back in the day and even though it had better graphics and sound I always prefered playing it on my friends Genesis.
Megadrive: the original version, some parts look best there, such as the warp effect in the salamander level. DOS: most faithful port. Much more colors, better sound, has cd music, but stays as close as possible to the original, but, maybe, some of the redrawn graphics lost lo-fi pixelart charm of the original, being a bit too smooth. Lacks 2nd level. SNES: some graphics degraded, some improved, some sound has higher fidelity, some missing or too muffled, new backgrounds have parallax, but make the level look too dark. Continue animation changed to less complex one. Level Ate parallax is great on the SNES! PSX and Saturn: new garish backgrounds, new garish menu. Parts of the levels and animations are redrawn again, in a different style. Both look and play _almost_ the same, with Saturn having more 2D transparencies and parallax effects, which are barely noticeable. Both seem less colorful than the DOS version. PSX version features unique cow-themed backgrounds in later levels apparently only to look different from others, because they don’t fit really well.
Almost 24 years I get why the missiles have that home-like icon, because they are homing missiles!
Lol. I don´t believe in myself. Now I understood the homing ammo "joke".
Dos version is by far the superior one!
An Ostrich Nope
i am surprised with the drastic background change between three of these versions..
DOS version looks the best, SNES background is awesome too.
+Nicolas Monti DOS = best audio quality.
Saturn is easily the most impressive with it's paralaxed backgrounds. I do like the orange scheme better though. All CD versions have the same sound quality.
Groovy!
if there is a sprite based game and the saturn is involved.. the saturn pretty much wins everytime.. still have a love that system
The genesis version is the best music and game play by far to me. On top of that listening to this game on a old floor model tv makes it even better trust me ;)
Finally!
The Ms Dos seems great 😮
MSDOS,Playstation, and Sega Saturn the soundtrack of anything but tangerines is better.
Was very surprised and impressed by the DOS version. Better by far in video and sound, followed by the Saturn port in a close second.
After all this ports I still prefer the SNES version , I don't know why , but for some reason there is something that make me feel that the background matches beautifully with the level . Something that sadly isn't present in some other versions , and I really like the music, it feels good for the game and in line with the previous game music, in contrast to the CD Quality version which I think is too much
I like how the famicom bootleg still keeps the smooth animation of the original games.
Agreed ! I was shocked at the quality coming from a bootleg.
Gaming History Source same with me.
Even the bootleg still looks better than the GBA version.
@@shockcityshocker Now I wouldn't go that far sure the animation is pretty smooth but the color palette is just straight up ugly
I prefer the snes over genesis because not only are the sound effects more clear, but there are more colors in the visuals and the smaller screen size actually helps hide some unfinished areas of levels. Not to mention, being able to swap weapons is clutch due to the bubble gun.
Dunno though, i prefer the sunset backgrounds of Genesis more over the SNES' background
Let's comparing about Earthworm Jim 2 :
Gameboy Advance - similar to Super Nintendo but it has glitched graphics, unfinished game engine, music that is not the same as Super Nintendo version and known as unplayable port.
Sega Genesis/Sega Mega Drive - the background is pretty nice but the music not good enough, and there's no way to switching the weapons during the gameplay.
Super Nintendo Entertainment System - the background is pretty good, the music is better than Sega Genesis, you can switch weapons during the gameplay, and they gave the port 5/10, but the screen resolution was cropped.
MSDOS / Windows 95 - The background looks similar to Sega Genesis but it was redesign, color palette is good, the music looks awesome, and they removed the lorenzo's soil level because it was hard to beat this level.
Playstation - the port wasn't fast enough, it has flaws of the background, the resolution is little bit large, and they gave the port 3/10.
Sega Saturn - since Sega Genesis is rated 5/10 and Playstation is rated 3/10. The Developers and Sega decided that Earthworm Jim 2 will be on Sega Saturn and it was great, having a good fix of the backgrounds, the pitch is high, but it has lack of advancements, doesn't lack the wider screen, and they gave the port 6/10.
Did you just say Lorenzen's Soil was hard to beat and that's why they removed it from the DOS/W98 version? You gotta be joking. It's easy asf.
I would say both the Genny and SNES versions have damn good music.
Might be more space limitations that the level was removed, not because of the difficulty.
@@TritnewNG I rented the Genesis version once, but I played it on Wii's Virtual Console more recently. Now, I'm just going off of memory here, but I recall the SNES version having much better music. It's not quite as noticeable here, but get to a level like the Puppy Love stages or Villi People/Jim's Now a Blind Cave Salamander, and the classical music just doesn't come out near as well on the Genesis's sound chip.
So many backgrounds for the 1 stage. Can anybody tells me if that also apply to other stages as well??
For me, the best version is the Sega Genesis version.
Personally, a mix of the Saturn and DoS ports would be the best version IMHO.
Saturn >> PlayStation >>> PC > Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) >> Super Nintendo >>>>>>>>>>>>Nes>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>infinito>>>>GBA
You can mess with the pitch of the "Well done" on the SNES. :)
The GBA is bad for that. The NES is even worse, but sounds good, but too high pitch. I know what else is high pitched. *Wink*
I can't believe on the Saturn and playstation they did not take the chance to make a better explosion for the enemies than the dithered white puff.
Wow the MS Dos version is the clear winner. It even has better graphics than PSX/Saturn.
The problem with that version is that it lacks a level.
yeah, Consoles were seriously memory-starved even in comparison to a decent 386 PC.
Dok Hycodan Nope lol 😂 😂
@@oscarzxn4067this isn't a problem
The Famicom pirate version is pretty good. Could do with the sound effects playing at the same time as the music though.
all of them win except the Family Computer (bootleg) shin shin version and the Family Computer (bootleg)
Supergame version. Because my ear bleeds!
And the GBA version?
I'm curious, did you use an actual system for recording the SNES version, or did you use the hagan emulator? I'm pleased to see that you went the extra mile to do one of those, most people that record EWJ2 on an emulator use either SNES9x or ZSNES and lose out on a lot of the sound effects.
Watch this video & tell me what You think. AGE uses the actual hardware. Then come back & compare it to my video & lemmie know what you think.

Hey man! I'm not here to critique your material or anything. Been watching your channel for some time and it's a great idea actually. I like the way you do your research before compiling the end material although I don't really dig your technical side. (again, not criticizing, just voicing my opinion).
I do understand why you use emulators (and I'm fine with that). Original obscure consoles and games for them may cost a ton but you can easily improve your videos by catering to few simple things:
1. Do not capture emulators in window mode. Use real fullscreen and a resolution which is close to the system's real resolution as possible. By capturing window mode you introduce video artifacts, sound delays and screen tearing. (that, and we also get to see the window's border).
2. Be careful with built-in video scalers. You'll get the best results by capturing video in the game's original resolution without any video scaler at all and after that scaling the captured source video to the output video resolution in the editing software you use.
Zoomer2008
I generally run my video settings at 1920x1080. My screen capturing software will only max out at 1280 x 720. Problem is that it hammers My CPU & the recordings usually end up at about 4 gig in size. I've tried it already & haven't noticed any difference in resolution once the video is complete. These older systems only rendered in much lower resolutions. That is the main reason I run them windowed because it really helps with the file size & is far less taxing on My CPU. It makes putting the videos together much quicker as well since I don't have to split the production to save time. Not only that but recording it with the borders saves me time as it is much easier to add the system logos to the sides of the clips. Before I refined my techniques for producing these videos, a production of one video could last for weeks. Now I have most of them widdled down to about a week.
I do understand what you're saying & appreciate your input but honestly it's unnecessary to take such steps with these old games.
Zoomer2008 to add to the last comment. It's not really necessary to produce these videos in high def as it doesn't really impact the final product that much. I do it because so many viewers requested it. lol This video was 2.3 gig in size once completed. In standard definition it would have been about 700 mb. :)
damn I had no clue psx had a copy
what filter did you use in Dosbox?
How keep sometime for looking this and 2 peshbuddie comic book on diverse was arcade game?📘
Based on the animated series
Are you also aware of the bootleg ''Earthworm Jim 3'' for the Famicom by Hummer Team?
indeed I am. I didn't know about it at the time I produced the 1st EWJ video. If I had known I would have absolutely added it.
The NES port could have been good if not for the music.
And what did he say at 29:10?
That thing hurt you know
Sega genesis tiene la posta!
I prefer the graphics of the SNES version but the sound of the Genesis. Actually the Saturn version looks and sounds far better than both, hands down the best version
Best Port:
Ms Dos
Sega Saturn
And PS1
Lost Port:
GBA NES
MS-Dos port is the best
Wow, saturn version has awesome backgrounds. Kills the ps1 version.
Not versions are there. The SegaCD one and PS3 remake, for example.
Those are versions of Earthworm Jim 1. Not 2
I hate to criticize the decision for the Genesis background compared to the SNES one, but why did Shiny go for the Orange Sunset? In a game that's meant to be more cartoon like, it slightly bothers me that the Genesis goes for a realistic approach to a sunset, whereas the purple hue in the sky for the SNES seems more... fitting to me.
I apologize if this comment is stupid, but I had to bring it up. Anything but Tangerines is one of my favourite levels to look at, yet the Genesis version, not as much... :/
Also, I like how the PSX takes the SNES SFX, while the Saturn keeps the SFX from the Genesis. Intentional? Maybe...
Jon X MacLennan but at least the color of the background matches its reflections on the foreground and the black foreground elements stand out. This level is supposed to have silhouette graphics with a bright orange background. other ports screw this up and look too dark.
Are you ever gonna do a Let's Compare on Rayman? You don't have to include all ports, including the DSIWare version.
It's on my mile long list somewhere. Honestly I haven't even researched it. If you can tell me what it's available for it might help speed things up.
Honestly i think the megadrive is better than snes because he has a better screen resolution and for a platformer it's very useful to see more to time rightly the jumps
Yeah, you can see more of the levels, but still playable on the SNES perfectly,on the other hand...
Hey!,you grab the bubble gun?,guess what?,if you're playing the Genesis/MegaDrive version you actually CAN'T change weapons,Even with the 6 buttons controller
in the snes version you could switch weapons, no idea if that's in the other versions
+lucky 100 dos and playstation too (checked)
+Julio Molero thanks for the info, one reason I'm not a fan of the genesis version
Saturn is the best.
I'm starting to think the whip got removed from the genesis version
@Layne Krusz ohh aight
Once again, GBA version still fails to impress... Seriously, if the GBA can handle games like DOOM 2 & have Castlevania games in the SOTN Engine. Then theirs should be no reason why Earthworm Jim has to turn out so poor!
It also depends on the developer. Some can work magic while others botch the entire thing.
*****
Yeah, lazy developer's.
+Mr. Atari 2600 or they just suck
Also, Ive noticed ALOT of slowdown in the GBA version. To me, this is most blatant in the scene where Jim eats the goldfish, then exits the level.
My personal opinion i favor the SNES version of the game because it had the better soundtrack, had more sound. and you could switch guns, the mega drive version had good sound but i would may have liked the mega drive version used the electronic sounds, but besides that it didin't have switching gun feature and didn't have 2 sounds that jim would say. too be fair the SNES version is a port but i still like it more
i agree.
prequel was better on genesis, but sequel is better on snes.
You need to upload the NTSC patch to the PS1 version ... Then the game matches that of Saturn
Ejim on Saturn have a better aspect - sound than HD version on Playstation 4 or XboxOne .
Luca Crivellaro HD remakes are crap with broken animations.
This seems like it is going from worst to best, as it starts with a bootleg, then the panned GBA version, all the way to the Saturn version I often hear is the best version.
Sega Genesis Wins 😍😍😍
The background detail in the SNES version is the clear winner. The Saturn version is sort of okay but it looks too flat.
The color pallette is a damn poor choice, though. Doesn't fit the foreground art at all.

Imho, SEGA wins. Both Genesis and Saturn versions looks and sounds more consistent.
Dat pc version doe!
