  • Comparison video of Rastan (Taito 1987) with gameplay of the following versions:
    Arcade (0:00)
    Commodore 64 / C64 (2:45)
    Amstrad CPC (6:54)
    ZX Spectrum (13:05)
    MSX (15:43)
    Sega Master System / SMS (17:10)
    PC DOS (18:03)
    Apple IIGS (20:11)*
    Game Gear (22:26)
    *The game runs slower on the real machine, but unfortunately I couldn't configure it properly. Anyway, I hope you can figure how good this port is.
    Apparently, a version for Atari ST was in development but was never completed.You can see a preview of it in this video: • rastan preview for Ata...

    I love the way that when every time the player gets a speed boost on the Apple ll GS version, the whole game speeds up, including the enemies AND the music. Would've been better than the arcade version if not for the strange speed up issue. Honourable mention to the C64- the music was an excellent rendition.

    Taito should've put the original Rastan on the Mega Drive instead of Rastan Saga II (Nastar Warrior). The PC and II GS ports look very good.

    I wish you'd included the hero dying, because I always thought it was a really cool effect in the original game how his body kind of disintegrates with that dramatic cry, and I would like to see the other versions' attempts at that. (I admit I did not watch every moment of this video, though, so for all I know, you did die at some point.)

    That can't be the GG version, its resolution is too high - looks more like the SMS version without the FM soundtrack. I definitely agree that the DOS and II GS versions are really good. The MS version is pretty decent, though I don't know why there wasn't a port to the Mega Drive.

    • @stephandolby
      @stephandolby 3 года назад +2

      @@javaykirk2688 That doesn't sound feasible, given the Master System's usual resolution is 256x192, whereas the Game Gear operates at 160x144. This also means that the screen would be closer to a square in terms of output - 10:9 ratio instead of 4:3.

      @@javaykirk2688 Hmm... apparently there are a few SMS games that were almost unchanged before being ported to the GG, and lose only 8 pixels either side of the image on the screen, but they have to use the original palettes in order to work (I assume this is how the Master Gear works when directly playing SMS titles). You learn something new every day, it seems - thanks! :) I presume that the loss of pixels is limited to the screen only and as such emulation will show everything?

      @cakestalker 3 года назад +2
