The Wachowskis became international sensations with their second film The Matrix, but their directorial debut deserves just as much love. Bound is my favorite movie of all time because of how fresh it feels. There's really no other movie like it, which explains why it's The Greatest Lesbian Gangster Heist Movie Ever Made.

As of this writing, you can watch Bound with ads on Tubi (bit.ly/3ptpiGY) or Pluto TV (bit.ly/3pIAb87). If you can afford it, I’d recommend spending the $2.99 to watch it ad-free on RUclips, Amazon Prime, Vudu, or Google Play. Enjoy!
Tubi is legit.
Back when I first found it, the ads were insane. Just random 15 seconds of people singing
Only $4.99 to buy on Prime. Treat yourselves.
I love the use of the word lesbian in this video. People usually avoid saying it to say gay or queer or Sapphic but this movie is specifically lesbian and totally cool.
I love how the movie had no shame in it either. I wish there was more lesbian movies like this. I also like how it didn’t feel like they were fetishizing the lesbians either, meaning making them lesbians for men to watch. Instead it felt genuine.
@@livvyyyyyyyyyyy yeah, i know i personally have stayed away from using the word "lesbian" because of how fetishized it has become but i think that it needs to be reclaimed, because it's an identity, not a porn genre
@@existential_horror5045 I actually thought the term "lesbian" is sometimes avoided to include / not to exclude bisexual women. Of course that is not an issue with Bound.
The Greatest RUclips Title I Have Ever Seen
OH NOOOOOO!!! Most people agree that my vids are the worst on RUclips. I agree to disagree. Please agree to disagree with the haters, dear q
I actually laughed at this comment. Mission accomplished 😁
Stunning and brave.
I love how the movie had no shame in making it a lesbian movie. They weren’t afraid to say it. I wish there was more lesbian movies like this. I also like how it didn’t feel like they were fetishizing the lesbians either, meaning making them lesbians for men to watch. Instead it felt genuine.
You ever just watch a video that so thoroughly sells you on a movie you have to stop watching it because you don't want the spoilers
happened just now
yep that's this vid
yep, but I'm on shift now, and while I can get away with watching this, I doubt I could get away with watching a feature film.
@@jamesanthony5874 big sad
I had already seen Bound so not this video for me... But it has happened several other times.
So the Wachowski´s have always liked short-haired women dressed in black. Also Joe Pantoliano.
Keanu Reaves?
@@userbeans i think they mean trinity but ya know who knows
@@ScottQ1 yeah just kidding
Joe Pantoliano is so great
DEAR GOD THAT'S A GREAT TITLE
whats so great about it? Its simply descriptive
@@MightySavagE some titles are just great through being great

a detail I liked was that Corky's lockpicks had earring hooks on them so she could make practical use of those piercings while on the clock
I have literally no idea how I’ve never heard of this.
YES I've been trying to get people to watch Bound for years.
Absolutely - really underrated. Unfortunately, mostly Matrix-fanboys are the only ones who've seen it.
@@Jimmy1982Playlists Sometimes people who watched Chucky and Family Guy. 'Cause what both shows have in common with this movie is a woman named Jennifer Tilly(Violet) In fact, she still does Tiffany Valentine-Ray and Bonnie Swanson to this day as we speak.
I have been singing this movies praises for *years* , considering the success of their follow up movie I'm surprised more people don't know about this one.
can we just give Jennifer Tilly some love RN.
Yes! Yes, please... one of my favorite actresses ever. And she is... *ridiculously* beautiful!
Her performance in _Bullets Over Broadway_ is another great one, outstanding... she's got amazing range; sadly, we don't see her in enough movies.
Honestly her weird voice is the origin of a lot of what I'm attracted to lol
If you look up the word smokin' in the dictionary there is a picture of her...
nah just gina gershon here bruh
@@Jimmy1982Playlists She seems to have retired from acting and is now a pro poker player. She seems like she has a fun life - good for her, although I would like to see her in more roles as well!
9:06 Wait, is he literally "laundering" the money?
Ba dum TSSSSS
One thing not mentioned here is how off the charts smart Violet was. She outfox the mafia, which leads to Corkys comment at the end about how they were alike. Violet was one smart cookie.
"Lesbian Gangster Heist Movie"
Is this a thing? Is there an entire subgenre I have to go watch all the movies in now?
Edit: I know Jojo P6 exists but not in anime format and I wanted movies

Really, my cousin took me to everything, "gay" in the nineties. Never seen this one. Thank you, will share👍
Could u recommend more?
I was literally just complaining last month after ‘happiest season’ how tired I was of f/f movies only ever being coming out stories or downers! Thank you so much for bringing this film to my attention!!!
I love "Bound"! And it is so underrated, thank you for bringing more attention to it.
And your analysis opened my eyes to things I didn't even think of.
Hope you enjoyed the holidays and happy new year!
Glad you enjoy it!

I also just want to say I've followed your video essays since a friend sent me a link to "How to End A Movie".
You were one of the first video essayists on film I followed and thank you for all you do, you've really helped open my eyes to how amazing film can be.
I feel cheated about not knowing this movie exists until now. Let alone a movie with Jennifer Tilly playing a wlw character????? I need to watch this movie ASAP
That chase scene near the end of the movie between Violet and Cesar is one of the best chase scenes outside of a horror movie I’ve ever seen and I still remember that moment 20 years later.
I wish the Waschowski's would've stuck to making great subversive genre movies like this for a bit longer. A slasher with a 'final boy', or a western where the damsel has to save the cowboy when his planned shoot-out goes awry. Could've been great.
Saw title: "This has to be Bound!"
Sure enough!
OMG YESS!!! One of my all time favorite films! And possibly the first time I ever saw lesbians being portrayed on screen
This movie blew me away! SO GLAD I gave it a chance. The pacing, the tension, the humor, the cinematography, the performances... its amazing!
Is there more than one lesbian ganster heist movie!?
There is not a lot that I'm aware of. Bound is by far the most popular and significant lesbian gangster heist film. One could say there should be more. But at the same time it makes Bound that much more unique and special in a way. Also not all would be guaranteed to have that feminine and authentic lense that the Wachowski's approach with Bound, and others may shift toward the "male gaze".
It's a joke.
@@jp3813 i know
@@Kaithe7 I guess Bryan didn't.
bound is honestly a terrible movie. the handmaiden is OBVIOUSLY the best lesbian heist film of all time
For years I have coveted my love for this movie. It was one of those of shoot ones that most people hadn't seen, and if they had was over shadowed by the later works of it's creators. As someone who went on to love film, and genre I always came back to this film and was saddened that so few people saw it's brilliance and shared the love I felt for it. Just watching this video you've made has brought me so much joy. Knowing that someone else was able to see the the brilliance in the minutia and appreciate the aesthetics and legacy of this film. It makes me feel like I wasn't so alone all the those years ago.
My arm is FAMOUS now.
This movie is prolly on the top 10 greatest lesbian movies. I love how it wasnt femxfem instead they brought in a masc lesbian who is also a switch. It was such a confident booster for me because im a masc and yet im a switch and sometimes i think my height will get in the way if im being topped. I feel like 79% of femxfem movies are just for guys with a wlw fetish and people can tell that it is for those type of people who see it as a fetish. Really glad this movie was made
Literally the best movie ever made, really disappointing that after this one and the matrix they never really made anything that good again 😔
The fact that I learned about the matrix in a film class and there was no mention of this movie... smh
Yeah, cause it sucks
You really are comparing this to the matrix
I'm going to optimistically assume that the two replies are from intelligent adults and explain that it is important and educational to compare what some may consider to be a director's magnum opus or best work to their previous works, especially if that previous work was the reason those directors were trusted with a larger budget. Both Bound and The Matrix explore themes of feeling trapped in one's own life and the video itself shows how Bound has a precursor to bullet time which is one of the Matrix's defining special effects.
Bruh the matrix isn't just bullet time
@@FOFOKASHY Ikr 💀💀, I literally rented this movie after watching this video... disappointing. Yeah there were some cool shots and camera angles... but all of the cinematography in the world can’t help a shitty story with bad writing.
At first I was wondering why I had never heard of the movie before but I just realized I didn't get to the end of the "Top 10 Lesbian gangster heist movies" list.
OK I'm immediately adding this to my watch list.
I saw the title and knew exactly what this would be about LOL
I mean it's not exactly like that's a broad genre, but I'm just astonished anyone else knew about this movie. I remember watching Bound in college and only because I had a lot of film major friends
oh god I got SO excited seeing this notification, I love Bound
How have I not seen this movie?! Thank you for the great video!
One of my favorite movies. So much to like - cast, dialogue, acting, set design, costumes, lighting, camera, music... All actors had great chemistry. Definitely deserves multiple viewings. Jennifer Tilly is to me the acting highlight of the movie, although everyone else was amazing too.
Lucy, The Best Woman Turning Into A USB Key Movie Ever Made
I just watched this on your recommendation and it was amazing. Knowing your insights before I watched it made the experience better. Thanks!
Impeccable insights! Not many recognise Bound for the milestone it really is. This analysis does just that, and so perfectly. Thanks for this.
This is such a perfect movie. There is NO weak link in this film. From the 2 main female leads to Joe P to Chris Merloni. One of my favorite characters was Mickey, I've never never heard of him..I never saw him in anything but that character was so captivating, he didn't fu*k around. The last 40 minutes has to be one of the best suspense filled moments in film history. I've introduced this film to people under protest and every single one of them thanked me for being so persistent. Again, the film is PERFECT. When The Matrix came out in 1998 I didn't see it based on the reviews, I saw it because the Warchaskis directed it. I didn't pay for a ticket to see the Matrix, I paid for a ticket to see the movie created by the4 directors of this amazing film. This is in my top 10 of all time. I think I'll put it on now! :)
Two years after, I finally watched this tonight. Thank you so much for your video, it was amazing!
this analysis is soooo good. thank you so, so much for making it
Love Bound. Saw it quite a few times back in the day. Not seen it in at least a decade though, will have to rewatch it.
THANK YOU FOR INFORMING ME THAT THIS MOVIE EXISTS holy moly I had no idea I'm hype
Never heard of this movie at all, which I find odd and unsettling and more than a little disheartening.
Anyway, it's $4.99 on Amazon Video right now.
I first saw part of this in '99 on network television. After the plot really got going, I turned it off and drove to Blockbuster Video and rented it (gawd, I miss Blockbuster so much). I absolutely loved it! I immediately bought it on VHS; then I got it on DVD; and I even went so far as to order the Blu-ray from overseas! I've watched it with all of my friends, and I just got through watching it with my 18-year-old daughter who loved it as much as I do.
My goal in life is too make the second greatest lesbian heist movie ever made
that'd be great
@@ScottQ1 But not the greatest!
here's 25 internets for that
I NEED to watch this movie, thank you so much, I didn't know about this
Set it off is good too
I completely forgot about this and am so excited to watch it tonight! Thank you!
How have I never heard of this movie?? 3 minutes into the video and I have to pause to come back after I watch the full film. Also, 10/10 title btw - the algorithm is gonna eat it up haha
How do we not know this film!!!! Thanks for sharing
I had this movie on vhs tape and watched it hundreds of times. I almost forgot it. Thanks for reminding me & this awesome analysis.
Got this bad boy on dvd in 2000. Just looked interesting, then I saw who directed it, then I had to have it. No regrets.
at the end of the nineties I was just starting to really love movies, I watched this in home video just after watching Matrix in a theater. Wow, brilliant.
I was obsessed with this movie for a time
I just watched the movie before seeing your video, it's a good 90s movie, the script is solid, but it doesn't feel as tense as it should feel for a heist film, now I'm gonna see your video
I can't believe Bound will be 25 years old in 2021. Amazing film.
Excellent video. You’ve opened gateways to me loving this movie even more
Great video on a great movie, so pleased to see this in the sub box. Now do a video on the second-greatest!!! lol
Thank you for bringing this to my attention! 🙏
watching this movie with my bf (t4t relationship) changed me as a person. I'm worried that this is about to be my new hyperfixation because of how much I adore this movie.
Really nice video! Keep it up!
Love this movie, and didn't know a lot of the history of film theory behind it. Excellent analysis. I learned a lot.
going to see this in the cinemas today! been meaning to watch it since i first watched this video
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who remembers Bound.
Brilliant Video
How have I never heard of this? You’ve convinced me
I need to watch this movie!!! My gay heart can't live without it! 😂
How have I never heard of this?! It looks amazing!
great video!
i watched the first two minutes of this, bought the movie, watched it, and then finished watching this. this video is 100% accurate. just sayin'
I want to give this video 1000 thumps up. also must check out Bound right away.
This movie rocked my world when i was like 15. Id never felt floored by a movie before
Thank you, This movie looks amazing!
"The Handmaiden" also is a lesbian heist. It came out a few years ago. You should check it out!
saw "lesbian" and came running. there really isn't enough lesbian movies for a lesbian audience
Saw this in the theater. Sooooo good.
lmfao that is one hell of a title
My favorite Wachowski movie
Lol. I love Bound. I don't realize it was a Wachowski film.
"Beautiful labrys."
Haven’t watched this whole video but does “Set It Off” ever get a mention?
Scrolled to see who’d mention
This was an excellent movie great cinematography I noticed everything this whole review and commentary was on spot
Hmm, dang. This movie looks quite awesome. Gotta check it out!
Damn shame movies like this aren't made anymore.
Thanx for reminding me that this great movie exists :)
I still watch that movie regularly. I love it
Okay, okay, imma hold you right there. I'm going to watch the movie first and then come right back
wtf I'm amazed I've never heard of this before!!
fantastic movie. watched it again earlier this year.
Siskel & Ebert loved this film upon its release. It made their top 10 lists at the end of 1996. Without those guys, I doubt I would’ve ever seen it.
Ok so I've only seen the Matrix out of Lana and Lilly Wachowski's films (barring V for Vendetta if it counts), but this inspired me to finally get into their other work soon. Great content, as usual!
Well I know what movie I'm watching tonight. I'm a mad fan of both the lead actors & had never even heard of the film.
Didn’t John Favreau make a movie like this in The Sopranos?
All I know about this movie I learned from _Seed of Chucky..._
If The Handmaiden (2016) counts as a Gangster movie (a group of elite involved in underground activities, more Mafia-like), that movie would be a strong contender.
I can't believe I forgot about Jennifer Tilly for so long.
13:33 wait... why is he yelling without music? Isn't there music in the final mix from the movie?
Maybe taken out of this video to reduce demonitisation risk?
Dialogue is almost always in the center of the surround mix, so it's pretty easy to isolate.
How have I never heard of this movie?
Watched it. Great movie!! Definitely one of the best ganster heist movies.
Thinking about other lesbian movies if that what you would call them. What about the "The Handmaiden"
Bound is iconic! Love love love
