“If you have a $30 knife you will never lose it.” That made me laugh. Very true.
I’m still saving for the 940😅
if you're still saving, go buy some alcohol and enjoy it while spending $30 on a clone from china that's built way better. For the spydercos, their quality is on point.
@@charleswells6863 I just can't support a company that goes against my #1 tool and that's my right to keep and bear arms. I get the same quality and even better fit and finish from china and they're not destroying american guns. 🤣
Priorities my man
@@colonelaengus7005 you wish your Chinese clones arent as near as good quality as a actually bench made
@@prod.deathwish I have several authentic 940s, most clones I've seen and own are of better quality.
What a great overview. This was excellent. Thank you, this really help me with a tough decision (I'll probably end up owning both). But money is tight so it's nice to be convinced on one. Thanks a lot.
Flash forward to January 2015 and I see in your current videos that you have gone back to the 940 Osborne as your EDC. What became of the Sage?
The Sharpmaker has been one of the best purchases I have ever made.
I agree with you 100% and you are my fav youtuber
Tom Price Thank you Tom,
Kjjk
Just came arose this old jewel! Great job on your channel and articulation Cody. Huge fan and always will be. Loved this old video that I just ran into...
Hey there Cody, long time subscriber here. I love this channel I’ve been watching since I was 16 and it’s really helped me learn the skills and habits and mindset that I have now at 22 and I want to thank you for that. I’ve owned a Spyderco tenacious for about 5 years now and I love that knife, I paid 70 dollars US and it’s served me well. I recently purchased my first Benchmade per your recommendation I got the Osborne 940 and I totally understand what you mean with needing a functional knife but also getting pleasure and joy while using it. Both companies are great in my opinion and I carry both knives back and forth daily. Great video keep up the good work, god bless.
Hey Cody, wondering if you've had a chance to get your hands on a PM2 ever?
JimboTV I think if he did he would prefer Spyderco more just bc all of the issues that he had would be fixed with the pm2
JimboTV if he opens paint can he might snap the tip. Maybe not m4 or 52100 tho
@@convex7456 yeah but you don't open paint cans with your edc knife, just as you don't open bottles with your phone.
I will say, I own and hard use Benchmade knives and Spyderco knives. I have had some, not all, some Spyderco knives fail me. My Benchmade 940 has been in my lineup for about 5 or so years. At the time $170 was a hard pill to swallow, but that knife has been damn near abused and has never once failed me. It is my absolute favorite pocket knife I've ever owned.
Great great video Cody, Ive been in the market for a new EDC knife. This definitely helped me push me towards the benchmade, so thank you. Keep them coming.
Have you tried thread locker with the pivot screw for the Buck Vantage?
"A proper tool makes a proper job"
box cutters for boxes
screw drivers for paint cans
pocket knives for fine work
Leatherman for most everything else
Old Boy Scout adage, "Be Prepared"
Never let an emergency stop you from thinking.
but if you don't have any of those on hand and you only have a knife that can handle that use it that's what I say
I've been carrying a Ontario Rat 1 daily for about 2.5 years now and I love it,easily the best knife at its price point. Full flat grind makes it a get cutter and the blade thickness gives it great strength, its worth checking out
10 years later how’s the rat doing
@@thicok4555 still got it, but I picked up a 940 when I finally could afford one and have been carrying that since. The Rat is still a great knife, no issues with it. It lives in the wife's purse now. Doesn't hold an edge as long as knives with better steal, but that's what you're going to get with a knife at a $30 price point. Luckily AUS-8 is easy to sharpen.
I enjoyed this video and own both of these knives. Thanks.
By far the most concise, articulate and objective knife review I've seen thus far. Wranglerstar, you have an eloquently expressed honesty which really holds my attention. Other RUclips reviewers should draw inspiration from this and refer to is as a benchmark when posting informative reviews.
Thank you, and keep them coming ;)
Honestly i like them both evenly EXCEPT benchmades tend to sit more invisibly in my pocket due to the lack of added height the spyderhole gives the spyderco. When my manix 2 is in my hand i like it as much or even more than my benchmade 940 but i carry the 940 more because i dont notice it as much in the pocket
I just love how Spyderco's have such a unique and distinctive design that sets them apart from the rest. Benchmade's are much more conservative in design and look like your average edc folder. If you whip out a spyderco, people will marvel at how unique and different it is. The shape of the blade, the distinctive hole in the blade, the clip and grip shape all look very distinct and is what makes a spyderco a spyderco
Hey wranglerstar what are your thoughts of zero tolerance knives like the 0200 for example
Sorry mr Wranglerstar for bothering you but I'm going to buy a 940 bench made and was wandering if I should take off the pocket clip or not
Need to cut cardboard? Stanley/Black & Decker utility knife w/disposable blades. Ten bucks at Home Depot. It's a winner. Can't go wrong.
Lars Dahl totally agree. I have folding lock-back razor knives everywhere as they are like 3 for $10 usd. Well made and why use your pocketknife for that task? My edc knife opens packaged but doesn't break down boxes. It's the wrong tool for the job.
Lars Dahl yeah if all you’re doing is cutting cardboard lmao there’s a ton that you can’t do with a utility knife. If all you have to do is cut cardboard than that’s what you should get, I use my knife everyday often and a box cutter does not cut it lol. Ridiculous statement you made
@Jee Vang what knife do they sharpen for you?
Billy Stink Lmaoo 😂
@@billystink4611 You can buy a knife for 15 tho and not have to get replaceable blades and have a much better tool.....
The chinese will give you something real nice for that price relative to stanley lol
Hate to say it, but the sharpness level of your knives is your fault once you use it past the factory edge. S30V takes a very keen edge if you can produce one.
+BelairUSN I know right.... You'd figure that a knife owner for this long would have known this by now, but perhaps he means the cutting capability from the tip point, or how the knife grip in his hand doesn't allow a good leverage in term of pressure as well as the spyderco.
BelairUSN. I know this is a year old but a lot of people have had issues getting the 940 to be a great cutter. I've sharpened knives for a good while now, and while I'm not an expert, I do alright and my friends like me to sharpen their knives for them and I've had issues with the 940 being a "good cutter" just like what he's talking about. It's a great knife, but he is right in what he is saying. And I'm pretty sure Cody is better at sharpening knives than anyone in this comment section, so I wouldn't really say it's his fault on this one
BelairUSN I know it's abit late, but I think that his Osborne uses 154cm...
Mark Tong I know this is even later, but yes that is the 154 model, very old school now
He probably needs to re-profile the angle. I've seen some 940's come at close to 30°. And benchmade's sharpening really is atrocious. I wouldn't let their factory edge be any representation of how the knife cuts.
So what model of Spyderco is that anyway?
I love the look of the old worn blade coating.
My EDC is an Endura 4 along with a Victorionox camper.
Still ur EDC? Very curious?
@@redwoodestates1 Yup, both have held up very well, with no notable problems.
Yup.. the spyderco sage in carbon fiber is a damn good knife... was reluctant at first to spend so much on a knife, but took the plunge and it definitely delivers... people may have issues with a Taiwan made knife... but hands down its far better build quality than the Griptilian I owned (too much blade play)....
@@rommelthedesertfox3089... great.. go buy one then
First time watching your video. Here I am watching stuff about cool knives and am happy about the guy because he seems honest and genuine then he brings up Bible study and then I get a smile on my face and hit the subscribe button.
My EDC benchmade is a 710 D2 "McHenry and Williams" I've carried that knife for YEARS around 7 or 8. This knife holds an edge better then any other knife i have owned, it stays scary sharp for a long time before it needs a touch up. I'm probably just as hard on my knives as you are and i expect my knives to hold up and perform. I have ZERO complaints about it i highly recommend checking it out! I really enjoy all your videos, you are a great role model and motivator to a lot of people! I have a lot of respect for you.
Get the sage with the bolt lock!!!
has 87 different axes, but uses a 940 to fix the sink. lol
didnt know you could fix a sink with an axe
Daniel Littlejohn yeah😂😂
this stresses me out
Have you tried a cold steel medium or large voyager?
I do and have owned both Benchmade and Spyderco knives. I have to say the 940 is one of my all time favorite knives. It is just so well made and carries so well in a slim package.
The 940 should be one of the sharpest knives you own, it has very good blade and edge geometry out of the box.
my question/thought would be as to why would one spend 150 dollars for a knife that doesnt cut. you mentioned loosing several and buying new ones.. the same 150 dollars spent on a tool to pry open paint cans.Idk, but when i get on my head and go under a sink to fix that leaky pipe.... I make sure I have the proper tools!. And why do sooo many people have the need to cut cardboard and paper. I do agree with the fact that the grip has a cheap plasticy feel to it, and what I see is manufacturers are trying to go lightweight on their knives do to certain gram weenies that cry because they dont want to carry a knife weighing more than 3 ozs.
I got a couple of emersons and a few striders and some tops knives and u convinced me to go with a Osborne 940, American made was the deciding factor. Keep up the good work.
Great video Cody, even in 2020, yeah you have more updated version but this goes into different sorts of details.
Interesting video. You open paint cans and undo screws with a $150 knife? You do plumbing and carve up cardboard with a $150 knife? Have you not heard of a box cutter or a screwdriver? You lost FOUR of them? $600.?? I respect that you've found God (I'm 'looking for Him myself) but come on dude - right tool for the right job. Looking forward to your Bible video. Respect to you Wranglerstar.. :) May God go with you..
Spyderco's warranty is hit or miss and just turns me off..It basically consists of a million exclusions and reasons why they won't repair or replace your knife. Benchmade's warranty is second to none.
Right there with you I'm personally boycotting Spyderco until they change a few of their policies such as the no blade replacement ever BM and ZT do new blades for $20-30, and will send you parts no questions.
Thanks for giving us the heads up. I really like the benchmade
I am a seaman and I have used a McHenry & Williams for ore than 10 years i have broke the tip off and reshaped it lost almost an inch .I also have about 10 other knives but when i wake up in the morning to go to work on the ship that McHenry is in my pocket still .Can't beat it . But I have 15 more years or so to work I am looking for a replacement but hard to find any assistance would be appreciated .
I'm still a Benchmade fan for hard use & they Back there Warranty, On the other hand Spyderco also makes some nice knives However if you have a Problem with a Spyderco just throw it away or put in your never going to use again box because Spyderco's Warranty is not worth the paper is written on, and if they do expect to Pay and expect to wait a LONG LONG Long Time... JMHO
Benchmade all the way. Premium steel and handle materials. Amazing performance. Had all of the brands mentioned including spyderco, Benchmade's the best.
Peter Cass I have 5 benchmades and every one of mine has came razor sharp. My valet cut me probably 10 times before I got used to how small it was.
Peter Cass man you've had some bad luck with Benchmade. All of mine have come razor sharp with no blade play. A couple have developed small blade play and a little tightening of the pivot always takes care of it. One had an uneven grind but it was an easy fix at home. And I've never had problems with my springs yet even after getting wet and lots of use. But it is pretty impressive that you made your own springs, I wish I was that handy.
Peter Cass I take mine up to 6,000 grit and strop with green and then red compound. Has no problem shaving paper, or occasionally the skin off my finger without me knowing.
Tyler Mattson I do mine at 1000000 grit ya know. cuz im so cool
Devon McClanahan bencmade premium steels? lolz. spyderco shits on BM when it comes to exotic steels and sprints.
How do you feel about case knives
I'm a loyal Benchmade owner. I own a 915 Triage, and I've been on the fence about buying a Osborne 940. I recently caved in to Spyderco's cool and simplistic design philosophy and purchased 2 of their knives (Paramilitary 2 and Manix 2). I couldn't be happier with both my Spyderco knives. They're excellent cutters as you've pointed out and an absolute joy to own. Spyderco wouldn't stand up to Benchmade in extreme hard use tasks. I'm saving up for my Osborne 940.
Li
Are you high ?
Yes my Brother. Do all things to the Glory of God. Amen
This is why I dislike Spyderco, even though I love their Ceramics, and a lot of their knives! :
They state right on their warranty page that they NEVER replace a blade. Benchmade or Kershaw will do this for you. So if you use your spyderco everyday for work or whatever and over time have to sharpen it quite a bit to the point where the blade is half gone, guess what? That is IT! spyderco tells you to "retire the knife from use" They use this clause many times in their warranty page on their web site. Kershaw and Benchmade never say anything like that. Benchmade will re build anything for you, and probably not even charge you for most of it. Spyderco charges out the ass for everything, they want you to "wear out" your knife and buy another one. When you buy a BM, you have it for life. Benchmade does annoying shit too though. Their Griptillians are notorious for having insanely bad centering.
My spyderco factory bevels are so far out of whack its just plain horrible, but they are sharp. You want spyderco to sharpen your knife? Okay pay to ship it out, then pay 5 bucks for them to ship it back. Benchmade and kershaw don't charge return shipping! haha I love throwing into a debate.
Spyderco knives are crazy popular, for good reason though, they are really cool. They are sort of addicting. I see why Benchmade knives simply do not excite some people.
+1 and Spyderco knives are so overpriced too
+1 Half of Spyderco's knives are made in Taiwan, not something I like to hear.
I'm glad someone read my rant lol. I have strong feelings against the Spyderco brand. Like you said here, their expensive and they export so much of their manufacturing over seas.
Obviously, whoever they source their blades from in Taiwan seems to have a high degree of competency, it is still bothersome that many of their higher end blades are from there. Its something I do consider when buying a blade, especially with the plethora of blades actually being made in the US and Europe.
Why buy a Spyderco Bushcraft when you can have a LT, BHK, or other similar blades made in the US/Canada/Europe?
That said, I'll never buy another axis lock Benchmade. Owned two of them and they were always getting sent back to get the omega springs replaced. I had to replace one within a month of getting it. Its something for me to consider when most of their folders come with the Axis. My next benchmade purchase will be whenever they decide to make a SAK or Mikov style SAK
wow omega spring really? Were you using both sides of the axis bar? I must have flipped open and closed my griptilian and my 710 10,000 times a piece and the springs are still very strong. I do however pull down both sides of the bar at once. perhaps if you only pull down one side at a time it puts more pressure on the spring. that is bizzarr
Hey @wranglerstar do you have an update for us on what you are Carrying these days for a knife? I highly recommend a Benchmade triage 916 with the blunt tip. It is made for prying. Also might want to check out the Spyderco manix 2XL,
What are you views on the buck 110 wranglerstar?
Spydermade or benchco
xXBallistic82Xx Spenchcode
There is more pride in carrying a Benchmade, since they're all made in the USA and they have a better fixed blade lineup, also with their new blade steel offerings, on average they'll do better. BUT, if you like the spydey hole, then Spyderco... I do really enjoy my Para 2, but also enjoy my Griptilian 551-1 in CPM-20CV with the G10 you'd wished for - I did really despise the old handle prior to the redesign. Spyderco has some more exciting designs when it comes to the collaborations, but they tend to make most of those in Republic of China (Taiwan), yet charge the same as one would for a blade made in the US or Japan (where labor rates are about 10 times as expensive).
But... Zero Tolerance is better than both of them ;)
You need to watch neroknives video “ why zero tolerance knives are not for hard use”
Just ordered my first Benchmade, the 940. Told my wife that wranglerstar approved it. She responded with BRAVO SIERRA.
I agree with you on all. I also learn from you daily. Thanks.
The US made Spydies are superior, IMHO. I have benchmades, spydies, microtechs, one Chris Reeve, and one Todd Begg. To me, benchmade charges you too much for the griptillian series, and the Osborne you show in the video, i had one and got rid of it, because it felt too fragile to me, again that's my opinion. The axis lock is setup to fail with the omega spring. The ball bearing lock on my manix's, and yojimbo are way stronger, engineering and physics prove that. The spring rests in solid steel and the ball detent has room to wear into the blade, over time.
Take a spyderco techno or southard and compare it to US made leafstorm or manic 2, there is a significant difference in attention to detail. I collect bm, spyderco, and crk and can
Genuinly say I believe the taiwanese spyderco are much nice than the USA stuff. I honestly believe that they put alot of pressure on their taiwanese employees to make sure the knife is perfect before leaving overseas (shipping is alot and alot of Asian manufacturers place alot of responsibility on their employees). Just my opinion. I dare even say spyderco taichung knives are close to CRK in fit and finish. As for customer service hands down benchmade, they go way out of their way for customers, like way the heck out of their way.
Im bringing back a 5 year old comment, but By the time that happens, id be happy to pay $25 for a new blade and for them to replace worn parts for free!
I recommend #coldsteel. Big fan of you and your channel Mr. Wranglerstar. Keepem comen. Great Videos.

after dealing with 30 dollar knives a few months back i put my money on the line and bought a zt 0350 and it has been wonderful as far as painted blades go i dont mind them i like the way they wear and the scars can be seen it's like my good old glock 23 that has the finish wearing off and i love it it shows the use and abuse for lack of a better term on the tool because thats just what a gun or a knife is
Did you ever say which model spyderco that is? Maybe I just missed it. Thanks for the video.
1:32: " *No one uses knives harder than I do*. I guarantee you that. No one can make that claim."
18:42: "It's 'Ruiner' approved. And I'll testify to that, I mean I'm not too far *behind him*; I'm pretty hard on equipment too."
Looks like you just said your best friend uses knives harder than you do...
I know I'm picking nits, but that ridiculous claim right off the bat just bothered me. Anyway, more or less liked the rest of the video, thanks for the discussion!

I got myself a Spyderco Delica 4 FFG after carrying an Ontario Rat-1 for a couple years as my edc. Man I'll tell you, for about $60 on Amazon, what a fantastic knife. Fit, finish, performance in cutting, steel quality, just everything about it. Anyways, Fantastic long video, take care & God bless.
I`m a newbie and I love Spydercos, also I like your watch! What is it?
Benchmade
Learn how to sharpen boy!!!!!!!!
He has a super high end sharpener.
I loved my BM Barrage... I lost it recently and have been looking for a replacement. Trying to decide between a zero tolerance and a Benchmade now. Thoughts?
What kind of oil do you use to maintain a knife like a 940 osbourne? My Dad bought a 940-1 and it needs oil I just dont know what you can use. I myself am looking into getting a 556 mini griptilian and that needs it too.
I use tuff glide but only to protect the knife from rust, you could some 3in1 in the pivot as well.
StuntMuffin01 Musical instrument slide and valve oil.
can't beleive I didn't think of that, I used to play the trumpet
St. Claire Nano Oil 85w

Maybe if you wore your knife on your belt like a man instead of in your pocket like a woman, you would not have an issue with Kershaw knives

I'm just getting into knives. Bought a Spyderco Tenacious, love'n it so far. I like the looks of the Rat 1. Cheers
I was going to buy a 940, the style of it just makes me happy. Then I heard their interview on Guntalk Radio and fould out they were chopping up guns for the local police department and backing bad knife bills that would get knife owners imprisoned.
I’m having trouble with choosing between my para 3 and my 940. Both feel amazing.
couldn't agree more! my brother and I argued over this subject.. I LOVE my BM 908. Great Video man, tell it like it is!
Nice to hear someone else has a "Tri Angle" sharpening system from Spyderco. We purchased ours in 1985 and it still works like new. ours is listed as model 203
thank you for your work and your consideration and effort God bless you bro
what do you use your knives for mate?
What do you think about CRKT a knives I have the M14 version and it's been one of the best knives I've owned. I've used it from cutting open cans to carving to screw driving and prying. I'm of the philosophy if a tool doesn't do what I want it to then I'll push it til it breaks and buy something better.
I own a CRKT M16-10Kz. Small and tactical. One of the best looking knives on the market in my opinion. I haven't put it too much use yet. I keep it razor sharp but it is a cheap steel. Aus 4 i believe. Anyway, CRKT makes good knives. good, Affordable knives, that is.
Great video review Cody! I own two of Spyderco's budget line, a large number of Kershaw's budget knives, and only one Benchmade (a discontinued Mini-Ambush - was overseas produced). Had to send the benchmade in and they weren't able to fix it so I received a $110 credit towards any of their knives on their website. Now I'm debating between the Griptilion w/ the thumbhole or a Barrage Axis Assisted opener. Keep up the great work!
Have you tried Strider og Sebenza?
Can you point to a good Survival Knife Fix Blade?
I'm intrested in what NLE edit software your using? Your videos are always so pro, and what camera. Thanks.
I just got the benchmade barrage today I can't wait to try it out
I love my sage 2. I've been carrying it nonstop for 2 months. I think I'm going to order my 940 today. thanks for the great vid.
I bought myself a Benchmade 585 Mini Barrage and it is the sharpest knife I have ever owned. Love it!! I may need to check out a spyderco too.
what is your opinion on sog knifes i have the trident and was wondering if you had an opinion on them
I’ve carried a kershaw leek for 17 years. Then just recently I’m sitting around and taking note of the amount of high quality premium items I own. Why not upgrade the knife? I have yet to pull the trigger, but I’m considering a giantmouse.
I really love the edge pro knife sharpener design more, i cant wait to purchase one. but great knife review!
What do you think about the 943?
Greetings,
Very thorough and informative review! What is the model of this Spyderco?
Enjoyable vid, Cody. I have both knives and really like them. One thing that I really like about the Benchmade is that the Axis lock doesn't require that you put any fingers in front of the blade when closing the knife.
i totally agree with your statements about kershaw. especially the skyline
Beautiful fixed blade at the end of the video! What knife is that?!
I personally carry both a Spyderco Tenacious and a Benchmade Barrage. I love both for different reasons. Nice video!
i just bought the spyderco delica 4 yesterdayfor 99 $ and im in love with it
Just bought a 570 presidio 2. Awesome 1st Benchmade knife.
Just came across this video. I own a 940 and a Paramilitary 2. I noticed that the benchmade always seemed dull. If I put some weight behind the benchmade, it will cut through just about anything. The spyderco seems as if it just glides through anything. I cut carboard at my work because we receive a lot of shipments. My spyderco and benchmade held their edges very well, but I feel that the spyderco only took half as much effort. Do you believe this is entirely due to the blade grind? They are both the same steel. It seems like the 940 is the only benchmade knife which isn't super bulky and tactical
same here I have had 2 benchmades lost my first one bought another same model 585S. I have had it now for 4 years and it work like I just got it out of the box. Great knives
How sharp does a knife have to be to cut cardboard boxes?
Like the video and the content. Good job and I’d go with the BM too.
If you could combine the two would you simply add the blade to the BENCHMADE or would you change more?
