Thanks dude, my ignition went T/U and left me stranded far enough from home that a tow would've cost about 200 duckets. Around $10 and 20 minutes later I was bopping along on my way home. Cheers!

The Red wire is a permanent B+ that's the one that gives the jus when u turn the key ON it passes the jus to the red and black (ignition wire) and the blue and orange ( radiator Fan motor fuse wire ) via a copper contactor, when u turn the key Off that contactor slides away from the wires pin to disconnect them from each other.
Aftermarket ignition switches may come with 4 or even 5 wires, those extra wires r insignificant on a VLX only 3 wires matters.

      TJBRUTALCUSTOMS HOLY WIKIPEDIA BATMAN.
Solid breakdown of the science behind the methods. I actually never knew that about the cutting torch (never used one either). I do 100% agree that that solid BULLET or FLAT BLADE connection is a stellar install. Using proper branded heat shrink takes that connection to another level of both reliability and functionality. Especially if the switch is moved to a cover that is often removable. I am very aware of the super stiff point it makes, when I do use it, I try to make sure it isn’t close to any bends. There is a good technique to infusing the solder so it sticks and beads without broiling the crap out of the bare metal.
Even then, I admire your skill and knowledge when it comes to metallurgy. I would imagine that even with proper technique, oxidation still takes place and in wiring, none will always be better than some. 🤙🏻
I’m actually a huge fan of bullet connections with weather resistant shields that are easily plugged and unplugged. Take a GL1800 that more often than not, will have 7 different lights on the front fender alone. Any service done to the brakes, calipers, brake fluids and front tire require the fender to come off.. . These services I see daily. I for dang sure ain’t going to hard wire that jank back in. Plus soldering all that crap takes longer than putting a disconnect spot in to begin with.
What I have also seen with bullet and spade style connections even with a thick shrink, is the weak point of the connection being just past the crimp, right before the male or female end. People like to bend those up to tuck them in and weaken that point in the metal, causing disruption, heat, resistance blah blah blah.
What I said in my comment should have been better worded. Soldering and heat shrink needs to be at the very least a minimum required connection or a hot wire like that.
You wouldn’t believe how many high voltage/amp wires I have seen hand twisted and taped. Stator to reg/rec for example.
In other words “Solid connection for the win! “
      ✌🏻✌🏻

Honestly for those of you having trouble, just go on ebay and spend $40 for a good used ignition if you can't find the key like what happened to me

Replaced my key ignition with a switch. One of the two wires on one side of the switch looks scorched. Is it overheating ? @TJBRUTALCUSTOMS
