Skylanders is great, I really enjoy the series, but saying Skylanders wasn’t about greed from the very beginning is crazy. The whole “Toys to Life” was and will always be inherently greedy. $75 for the SSA starter pack + 5 more characters being $8-$10 each is EXPENSIVE just to experience the entirety of the whole game. I agree, it got worse and worse the more games they made, but acting like Swap Force was the beginning of the greed is being stuck in denial.
That’s literally the truth. The giants were $15. And then you got some people saying swap force saved you money when like bro you have to buy most swappers together if I remember correctly 😭. like I love each of these games, but at the end of the day, they were literally just made for money. The stories aren’t like peak or anything and it’s the same standard formula. People will REFUSE to believe something they like has any greed to it.
Trap Team became more about having other stuff than the actual Skylanders, and it really downgraded with SuperChargers.
Yes, this is exactly my opinion as well. I've come to see Swap Force as more of a fumble specifically by Vicarious Visions as it was their first time making a Skylanders game.
With Trap Team, although the story and characters were extremely fun, it did mark a shift, focusing away from the figures and more towards the accessories. For all my issues with Swap Force, it still focused on the figures, which was the main appeal of the franchise to begin with.
Superchargers continued this shift to an extreme level, and then it felt as if Imaginators just threw in the towel and said 'To hell with it, just make your own character!"
Superchargers. I like the game a lot and enjoy the car integration, but I understand that many won’t enjoy the gimmick…

To me, the cost of trap team pushed a lot of people away. Plus light and dark figures being hard to find.
Never forget what they did to element gates in trap team
I feel the costs killed the skylanders and also Legos Dimensions and Disney Infinity.
I was working at Toys R us during this era and I worked in the video game and electronics dept.
I used to hear parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles fussing at their kids over these figures mainly about the expense and saying this is going to have to stop. They just couldn't afford the expense of the figures. I heard this all of the time while I was working. Kids would start crying, whippings were threatened. Just hearing the parents say they could not afford to keep buying the figures. It was going to have to stop.
I was in my 20's at the time working with my own money and I was getting upset with the costs and gimmicks myself.
I am only saying this when it came to the kids and parents. Which helped with the demise of the game series.
Now adults with their own money, I would say the gimmicks especially with Trap Team. Money, money, money grabs and the expense of it all. My collections are complete for all 3 games except I still need a few more power discs yet for Disney Infinity. I don't have any of the Employee figures for Skylanders. I like all of the games except for Swap Force. The darn levels. Some being and hour long plus. I am a completionist so needing to replay levels over and over again to find all of the collectibles was just over the top for me with frustration. I finished Swap Force then I threw the game and case across my room out of frustration. It's the only game that I completed through frustration and determination. The game and case are perfectly fine.
I will say the expense of needing to buy this and that gimmick killed all 3 games especially with the parents in Toys R us fussing at the kids and threatening spankings about the begging for figures. For all 3 game series and the costs. The parents were just angry. On a side note, why bring the kids to Toys R us if you as a parent knew you could not afford what your child wanted, why come to Toys R us to just fuss and scold the child in the store. Why do that to the child in the store. You did bring them there.
I worked at Toys R us so, I heard the complaints about the costs. Parents were very upset about the expense. The parents had the money and not the kids. I am mainly talking about the kids and the parents during this era. With angry parents cutting back on purchasing the figures and gimmicks, that especially had to hurt sales.
nah I think people loved swap force as a kid, I loved it too lmao (also cloud breaker saying "car bad" makes you sound like generic skytuber number 478 lol I love the vehicle sections)

My ill feelings towards it may have been influenced by the fact that I played it on the Wii.
Looking back now, I think my young brain must have noticed something clearly wrong with the graphics...

@@bobbynelson5849 The weird thing was that then I played Trap Team on the Wii but didn't have any problems with the graphics at all, when by all accounts it looked worse than SF.
@@onemoreminute0543 honestly as a kid I barely noticed the graphics, I genuinely have memories playing swap force thinking it looked the same as what I saw on RUclips. Trap team was my favorite skylanders game and I don’t even want to know what it looks like on the Wii
personally i think swap force is a bit of a stretch. from what i know and have heard it tends to be the fan favorite in the franchise, even with some of it less cared for elements such as the removal of classic and fan favorite characters. overall as much as it hurts me to say. i really think trap team was the downfall of the franchise. so much of it came down to the greed and price increases of the figures alongside the need to have only trap masters to open gates and get bonus damage against villains making the cores almost completely useless in that game. heck i never got any of the cores for trap team apart from funny bone until i started recently recollecting figures. it honestly really hurts me to say trap team too considering it's my personal favorite game in the series.

When I got Trap Team, I was never able to complete it because I couldn't gat passed the level with the floating head fight. It would always freeze on the start of the fight and I ultimately gave up.

@mikeyacevedo7412 AZ will def not have the same quality as s&v that game got criticized so hard they had to officially apologize also that was during the "pokemon rush" where they rushed out 3 games within I think less then a year between each (LA BDSP SV) so it was just really rushed

I consider it a good thing that Superchargers had the least newcomers because of the sheer amount that Trap Team did before it.
Superchargers was definitely the reason. The new Skylanders weren't that great, heavy focus on vehicle segments over various battle arena modes, AND the fact that there wasn't really reason to buy anything further because EVERYTHING unlocked randomly in gameplay anyway. You could play the same race and still get the same hats, soul gems and vehicle mods because it was random.
I think the problem was that they were not available on the Wii and only on the Wii U, that killed it for me personally.
I hope they make a new skylanders soon I don’t believe the franchise is dead
You can’t blame the dual elemental gates in swap force just connect a second controller and boom easy as hell so if that’s possible they were not greedy in that sense
I feel it's more likely Trap Team. Especially when you need the more expensive figures and then need the traps.
I love swapforce it was the game that got me started in skylanders. I acknowledge I have bais and swapforce started some issues, but honestly I think trap team was the real killer it took the issues of swapforce and made them worse. Swapforce encouraged people to buy extra skylanders, but you still had opitions to go around it.

its been over 7 years since the last game me waiting and hoping for a new skylander game so i can go skylander hunting again like the old days instead of choosing wich i want i wanna take em all got the whole roster variant levels traps yes yawns robow wildstorm green chompy mage too and now collecting all chases and i really wanna keep collecting and playing the games i dont want it to stop
i loved playing as a kid but i remember playing superchargers and it really sucked, it didn’t really bring the same enjoyment i had when i played with my brother in giants or in swap force, the need for the cars to progress killed it for me and made me not want to buy imaginators
Trap Team is an example of a good game marred by little development time and Activision's greed. I play on the PS4 edition and have encountered only a few major glitches (something I know changes between consoles), so I haven't had any really bad experiences there, but I have had to restart every now and then because the game just locks up. And on the side of greed, the trap mechanic was really, really cool and in my opinion, worth the 4 bucks for 1 trap of each element (4 of which included in the starter/adventure packs). And it's been reported that trap master gates were added in very last minute and that they were not initially intended to require the new gimmick figures. Otherwise, I think Trap Team was a really good game and if it glcame after Giants, I think the decline would have been far less prominent.
Yes, I've thought this as well. It's always important to keep in mind which studios developed each game.
Toys for Bob made SSA, Giants, TT, and Imaginators. Vicarious Visions made SF and Superchargers. So the initial soaring success with the first two games was then disrupted by the arrival of a different developer with no experience making the games.
Trap Team definitely felt like the true sequel to Giants, but it was too little too late at that point.
By Imaginators they just seem to have run out of ideas.
Nice video and I completely understand what your saying I love the series the series help me to be better even though the series have it pros and cons I still enjoy skylanders it was part of my childhood and I never forget the fun times that I had with the series
What about the wii u failing killing the franchise? Because if the wii u even slightly a success then there’s not nearly as many people effected by swap force and trap team on wii u and those games are looked back on more fondly

I think trap team was the tipping point. The amount of figures that came out for it was far too overwhelming. Yes you could just get the trap masters and a handful of traps, but there were also a bunch of cores and reposes, eons elite, plus the minis which feels the most cash grabby. To me it feels like they tried to squeeze fans a little too hard and sales declined with that
I know this games so well and I love them all so much. It hurt my feelings when you were talking like that. But I did had problems with the 9. level in Trap Team because it would crash my wii and make beeeee sounds.

Idk about swap force being a decline though, the roster is great and the game is bursting with content even if you don’t wanna get lots of characters. I think sales declined after SF due to DF and Lego over saturating the market. I think all 3 franchises killed each other. SF and TT are two of the best games, but during this time too many TTL games kinda devalued each franchise because of how expensive playing each three would be. And Disney frankly had a bigger IP than Skylanders so when it launched it’s naturally going to take a lot of fans with it.
I personally think It was superchargers because at least in Trap team or Swap force they innovated with new and cool stuff while in superchargers they only putted cars. And Next we got imaginators were we clearly see that they ran out of ideas so they made ya customize our character.

To me: I played each of the six skylanders games and have revisted most of them. I didn't really have an issue with swap force to start of the monster designs were too goofy or felt foreign. I mean they tried making kaos look cuter for a while. There were some interesting ideas and although some had an idsue of needing more figures: I never saw that as an issue as i was a collector of figures for these games so i had to save up money, christmas or my birthday. For Trap Team it sucked you needed trap master characters of each elements and the new element masters were harder to find for me. But again as a collector i eventually found my way around it and the glitches never gave me issues. Trap team is my personal favorite and second best story for the series. Now if i was to say what killed the franchise was Superchargers. Alot of what you said about superchargers i agree with as I wasnt a fan of vehicles and alot of the content and roster was butchered. Theres also the introduction of microtransactions for this and the final game i also didn'tlike that they wouldn't allow you to use your trapped villians as they are charactersof their own in future games. Though i do think superchargers has the best storyline of the games. For Imaginators, I liked the gimmicks but Now there are microtransactions and some of the line up are incredibly rare to 100 percent the game. The elemental gates feel even less impactful and the story feels like its falling apart. Clearly they all knew they were running dry so they had to go out with a bang.
Superchargers is actually a pretty great game, but the excessive level of greed in Trap Team combined with the lack of imagination with the concept of Superchargers was a one two punch that I think is responsible for the death of the series. Imaginators returning to the high greed levels of Trap Team didn't help either. Swap Force is by far my favorite, and yeah, you needed more to 100% it than Giants, but the vast majority of the game could be unlocked with the 8 figures you have from the SSA and the 1 Giant from Giants, and the Starter Pack with Swap Force, you miss out on a few of the Swap Traversal zones, but everything else is accessible. Also, Swap Force is the GOAT. Jumping is the most crucial addition to the game to take it from a game aimed at small children, to a slightly older fan base that had grown by 2-3 years by this point. They needed more than just running around and attacking by this point.

Trap Team was the best game I played imo. Fun game, fun story, fun roster. Sure it was kinda p2w/p2p, but cmon, this is Skylanders.
As for the one that killed the franchise, I think it was probably Superchargers, because it had an okay roster but was pretty p2w with a forgettable story and lost some of that “Skylanders style,” if you know what I mean. Same with Imaginators, which just didn’t really feel very “Skylanders-y.”
I believe since it was a great game franchise. But swap force killing it. I agree. But I don’t really think about the negatives I think of the positives. Such as cool new characters. And the only ones that were hard to find (at least for me) was the Amazon ones the chases and the dark editions. Other than those I saw wildstorm and ro-bow everywhere where I lived. My town didn’t have a great fan base for it. So it made my life so much easier and that’s how I got my ro-bow for 20$
I think the player base ageing also played a major factor in this franchise. 2011 kids by 2014/15 were moving on from Skylanders and unless you were really dedicated there wasn’t much draw to the series when you had much cheaper and more in depth video games to drift towards.
Imaginators all the levels besides the golden arcade call all an inspiring besides the final level golden arcade is my favorite level because it's unique and stuff but there is a floor because it ends in a cliffhanger.
So you needed both a Trap Crystal and also a Trap Master of each element to complete the game 100% and even tjen you couldnt because you needed a Kaos Crystal.
With Giants you only needed one new Skylander and for Swap Force, you at least had one more than Trap Team.

its kind of weird since swap force had one of the best gimmicks of the games but yeah they flipped everything up it felt weird. as a kid playing swap force i felt like this wasnt really the skylanders i knew and that it became its own thing. i feel like after swap force trap team brought back the older style of the older games a bit and had a lot more fun levels as you said though it was buggy. everything after that was like swap force but less fun. had fun until trap team really
I’d have to say Swapforce was the start of it with the long grindy game and killing off your old collection unless if you open the elemental gates with player two have the other element skylander for the duel elemental gates but still needed the challenge eggs like climbing and flying swappers. The other games buried this need to spend with trap team having a lot of things to buy, supercharges had a lot to buy, and imaginators had figures, crystals, blind bags, in app purchases, and so on. That along with competitors and a oversaturation of the genre is what killed it. Eventually nobody really did anything different.

The downfall started at swap force, that's for sure, trap team if it wasn't so expensive it would be the best game but now it's giants, and superchargers and imaginators are obviously the worst it was going just downwards from superchargers

I got the dark version of swap and the swap thing was ok, but the new looks, and the story made me quit the franchise. I thought I got too old for this (I was 12), and now It's for little children.
Also swap force is the best in the franchise.

It needs to revive skylanders and guitar hero franchise because skylanders website is gone because of them. We want skylanders 7 the video game will come out.
Giants: i think the shortness left way too much to be desired in my opinion. And the giants are too slow and too big a hit box.
Swap Force: personally my most favorite. Yeah, it has a couple of weird issues but it's still my number 1.
Trap Team: yeah that one is stupid. It be fine if the Trap Masters just broke crystals but they had to make more dumb excuses like YOU NEED TRAP MASTERS TO OPEN GATES.
Superchargers: the actual racing feels decent. It's just the vehicles feel gross during battle arenas.
Imaginators:
It's a nice return to form in my opinion. Yeah, they forgot a decent bit of content from older games but on the bright side, it's got everybody. And technically revived my boy, Crash Bandicoot.
For me, Skylanders lost me with Superchargers and its Cars...wtf? This is Skylanders, not a racing Game. For me, the car stuff does not fit in the world of skylands.
And I actually enjoyed Trap Team a lot! For me, it was Wayyyyy better than Swapforce. For me, Swapforce was the weakest of all 4 games I played. I replayed the first Skylanders and Giants 3 times. And I also started Trap Team again. But Swapforce? I didn't even thought I could touch it again 😅😅😂.
Right now, I play Superchargers and Imaginators on an emulator...with no cost. And for this, just to enjoy the game without the need to pay for the figures, both games are okay 😅😊

Oh boo hoo, they added vehicles to a universe that almost exclusively requires them for island-to-island travel. People always point at Superchargers’ racing mode and go “game bad, gimmick bad, they copied Mario kart,” and never stop to look at the vehicle gameplay outside of the racing. I can understand why some people don’t really like racing boss fights or how sea and sky stars basically replaced elemental gates, but don’t treat it like it’s a flat concept that you can do nothing with. Look at giants, where the entire gimmick was “we made it again but bigger this time.” It seems like a bland, uninspired concept but it’s enjoyable if you add depth to it. Yes, superchargers does copy other racing games and seem pretty uninspired, but at least see all it has to offer before knocking it.
Although I agree that it probably killed the franchise.

It was Trap Team's greed and Superchargers' lack of ideas that killed the franchise.
