Uncle Phil used a very common and classic technique of pool hustling. He let the guy win because he knew he’d raise the stakes. Normally the Hustler is the one to raise the bet, but in this case Phil hustled the hustler. He actually outsmarted the guy. A prime example of a well educated man who is also street smart.

This is part of the reason why Uncle Phil grew to become so fond of Will. He may have gotten into trouble a lot and caused a lot of commotion, but he also brought joy and color to Uncle Phil's life. Before Will arrived, Phil had settled into a boring, upper class lifestyle trying to enjoy the more refined things in life, but it just wasn't him. With Will in his life, he may have gotten exasperated at all the shenanigans he pulled on him, but there's no denying that Uncle Phil enjoyed most of it.
Just like this scene. If it wasn't for Will getting himself into trouble with a hustler, Uncle Phil would have spent a nice, quiet evening at home. Instead, he got to re-live his own college days and spends the night in a pool hall, teaching Will a lesson and actually enjoying himself at the same time.
This show was so good, I could still watch it today and enjoy every minute of it.

He made it out of the streets and used what he knew to propell himself and his family to a better standard of living. Will is a younger version of Uncle Phil. Uncle Phil never gave life lessons or advice to the other 3 because they always did what he said, but he was there to help Will navigate through that early part of uncertainty in life, when we transition into adulthood. He understood the difference between his own kids and Will.

The way he said that with that little laugh, voice and smile was epic as he was saying you are in deep trouble. Phil is a man that is a caring husband, father, uncle. brother in law and just a good man. He has this ability to seem so gullible that many take advantage of only for those to regret it later. He is a man that will put his money where is mouth is while making a fool of you. Also don't EVER hurt his family in any way as he will find a way to make you pay. He also will make his children deal with what they did as well a punish them.

Not just the greatest black sitcom of all time by far, but easily one of the best sitcoms of all time period. Hilarious, clever, witty, yet tackled real serious issues and gave amazing advice and life lessons. The only other black sitcom that ever came close was Family Matters and, while a damn good show, just did not compare to the awesomeness of Fresh Prince.
I'm white and when I watched this show, I didn't see a black family, I just saw a family. Hell, it wasn't until the show reminded you that they were black did I even think about it, and it really made those issues sink in; like when Carlton and Will got arrested for driving the borrowed car.
James Avery was the heart and soul of this show and really showed just how much hard work can pay off. He was the uncle everyone wish they had and he will be missed.
