Penang has some of the best street food in Malaysia. Amongst the foods to eat in Penang, Malaysia, is the rich and unique king of fruits, durian! Durian is a Malaysian specialty and is grown on Penang Island itself, making it not just a Malaysian specialty, but a local specialty too. Durian has a very interesting taste and an incredibly different flavour unto itself, it’s dubbed the king of fruits for a reason, and the durian in Malaysia is no joke... Malaysian's love their durian!
There’s so much Malaysian hawker street food in Penang that is a must try, so we continued our Malaysian street food tour looking for the best and most popular food in Penang. We tried some incredible Malaysian Indian street food, roti jala with a very spicy chicken curry, and the delicious koay teow th’ng from a local hawker.
It was a must try for us to go to a night market and see what kind of Malaysian hawker street food in Penang, Malaysia, there was to eat. Our last stop on our Malaysian street food tour was to try Penang curry mee, a spicy and creamy unique noodle dish from a classic street hawker cart in Penang.

I love durian n even like the smell! It is aromatic n appetising to me!
Yes! But we forgot and left it in a hot car it got angry! To me it tasted like vanilla-grapefruit pudding, very smooth. Not at all likr it smelled just a few minutes before in the hot car.

I love roti jala ( means net bread)..have made it myself too. I once found an Indian muslim stall at Padang Brown al fresco food court calling it 'roti sorai'. But generally it is called roti jala. Made from plain wheat flour, coconut milk n turmeric powder ( giving it yellow colour). A Malay stall i ate at long ago had pandan juice to batter, making it greenish.
We loved the roti jala as well, such a nice taste and texture, and perfect for dipping ;) adding pandan to it works be very interesting, we'd love to try one like that!
@@HungryTwoTravel So far i only had that once many years back, from a Malay stall at the Esplanade. It didnt look appealing the greenish colour n they were served cold Not hot

Kajang satay or skewers in Kajang is the best, durian Musang king is one of the best in the world. Malaysia is a truly Asian and food paradise!!

Definitely Durian Penang is the best. Amazing video there and now am carving for durian..lol. Btw u guys should try Pak Tam Mee Udang ( noodles with sweet and spicy soup or fried noodles served with fresh prawn, squid or crab) near to the cleanest beach in Penang which is at Pantai Bayu, Teluk Kumbar. The seller which is Pak Tam is the fisherman there and definitely the food there is amazing, fresh and so cheap!!! Untouched paradise of Penang! Bonus part it's near to the Penang international airport.

We totally agree, they were so tasty!! Probably the pandan brown sugar coconut was our favourite 😋😉
The Chinese hawker selling you the curry noodle was asking you whether the dish looks nice or not (Leng mou?) but you didn't seem to catch what she said. It not only taste delicious but looks nice as well.

My travel tour guide said Musang King is top durian in Malaysia and I don't know if they have that type of fruits or not. That roti is like shredded crepes dipped in red curry chicken. They've prepared the bowl of Teochew Rice Noodle Broth. I like satay skewers, some of the hawker stalls have pork liver with the glazed. I would like the pandan coconut flavor mini pancake with brown sugar than the rest. Glad he ended his night market with Curry Mee similar to Assam Laksa.
The pandan coconut was our favourite as well! The curry mee was the perfect end to our big day, overall a street food success!! Thanks for watching :)

Welcome to Malaysia guys! Just wanted to say that the "curry" you had with the roti jala didn't really look like curry. It looked like ayam masak merah, which means red cooked chicken. That's why it was spicier than you expected.

Ayam masak merah is a type of curry too! With tomato puree n chilli powder. I am Malaysian Penangite. Definition of curries has to be wider in compass..there are also green n yellow ( dhal) n white curry (korma). Also indian n other malay Red ( very hot) dry curries.
If there's no curry powder, it's not curry. Calling everything curry is also wrong. It's just a lazy way to simplify the different gravies us Malaysians have to foreigners.
@@redzuankamaruddin6648 nope, i am an avid amateur cook whose food many have Praised greatly. I have studied many recipes even from India n Chinese curries. Chinese Nonya chicken curry has no curry powder but freshly ground spices. Chinese dont use curry powders but fresh ground spices for different curries. (I am an exception among chinese, i use curry powders for my curries as it is more convenient n more economical.) Who is to say they are not curries? I am well aware of the great varieties of delicious Malay n Indian n Mamak curries available in Malaysia!

We agree, the flavour is so good, we think it's a combo of that with the smell, some people seem to really dislike it but we don't find it that pungent

@@soulman3790 Yes me too. I really like the texture. But most tourists gets put off from the smell and texture because they were not expecting it. They should be explained properly before eating so first time eaters know what to expect. Outer casing holding in the sweet custardy goodness.
@@blardymunggas6884 i recall when i was 6 y.o., durian was brought back home. I was turned off by the smell but my family persuaded me to try a mouthful. So i held my breath then took a mouthful..i got hooked on the taste n began breathing after that. From that moment onwards i never minded the smell too! That was 61 years ago.

That is because north americans get the durians in asian supermarket and it is not fresh with cracks appearing at the bottom. Your brother should get musang king from miami fruits. Not from asian supermarkets which are thai durians. Malaysian durians are mostly found in singapore and china. No where else. Miami fruits import them (musang king) into north america. The premium stuff.

Curry mee in Penang is called in Kuala Lumpur (federal capital) 'Laksa'. Laksa in Penang n Northern parts is ASSAM LAKSA (TAMARIND LAKSA) N SOLD AT MALAY STALLS AS 'LAKSA ASSAM' ALL OVER WEST MALAYSIA. I recommend strongly you try ASSAM LAKSA, voted as 'most delicious street food in the World'.

@@HungryTwoTravel you must still be in Malaysia. Try Ipoh for their beansprouts Chicken rice. Not served like this in Penang usually except for a few outlets. We get ours with cucumbers n spring onions. Try also the Portuguese food in Melaka town. The Portuguese heritage has passed down from early colonisation in 1511.
We were actually in Ipoh just before Penang, and tried a few very Ipoh dishes, including the bean sprout chicken rice. It was so good!!

The noodle in curry mee is yellow mee not eggs noodle. Wonton mee is using egg noodle. Hope this help

You are right about curry mee noodles. It hasnt got egg in it. The colour is colouring added. Fresh wheat noodles..however wantan mee contains no egg i believe. I was a lacto vegetarian before n i took care to know what contains egg or no.
I write "wonton" too for Americans for that is how y'all pronounce 'o' mostly. But Malaysisns write it as 'wantan' coz in Asian languages "a" is pronounced as "ah".
@@soulman3790 well, I'm not sure around your area but the authentic Wanton mee is using egg noodles. It definitely has eggs inside and some stores even only put flour and eggs without water to achieve springy and chewy texture.
@@unknowndy You are right also. I took to buying when i was vegetarian wonton raw noodles from vegan food supplies. But regular wonton noodles contain eggs, fatter than the vegan type n browner too. Oh it was harder being a vegetarian. I no longer am, though i eat lots of veggies.

Surprisingly you guys didn't vomit like most Caucasian eat durian. 😂🤣😅 So did you feel the onion custard taste? You guys should try 胡椒豬肚湯，it's nice, although it's organ dish and a little bit chewy, but it's definitely not disgusting and weird texture like liver....
We loved durian! We didn't experience any oniony or pungent tastes, just nice and creamy and delicious!! We'll have to keep an eye out for that dish thanks for the suggestion ;

Its alright. Mask is only compulsory in closed areas. Its perfectly fine not to wear mask in open spaces now.
