He was digging thru the radio for a station to listen to and they caught the beginning of this song. His mom said leave it in cuz she liked that song. Midway thru the song, he realized what it was about for the first time.

Amber is the one who usually doesn't get the sexual innuendo, but most people in the 70's never realized it because the group was so squeaky clean. There is a great Arrested Development episode where the Jason Bateman character joins his niece for a karaoke rendition of this song, neither one realizing the meaning of the song. When they start singing it to each other, they finally turn to the audience only to see them all aghast with shock and horror and Jason realizes finally what they are singing and grabs his niece and they run off the stage. Jason says to her as they flee "Never knew the song was about that."
People in the 70s got it. Maybe you missed it and no one around you would clue you in, but it was understood by most. It certainly helped in acceptance that the band was 2 married couples.

It's funny you think that back in the 70's, people would have been shocked by this song, but they were not. I think it's harmonies are so incredibly beautiful and sweet, it makes the song have a pure and dreamy sound. A lot of parents have their own "little afternoon delights" walking around today because of this song. :) Love you guys have a great day.

It’s okay Amber. I was well into my 20s (two decades after this song was released) when I blurted out “I just realized what the song “Afternoon Delight” is about.” For about a year, Starland Vocal Band was hot: hit song, variety show; my guess is the royalties have provided them some income over the last 45 years. Fun song!

You really need to catch the episode of Arrested Development where Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman), grabs his niece, Maeby, and jumps on stage to duet on this song in order to enliven the family company's holiday party - the look on his face when he realizes what the song is about, and that he's singing it to his niece, is priceless comedy gold! My sides hurt just thinking about it! 🤣
There is an old Murphy Brown episode that featured this song. Now that hilarious!
It also pops up memorably (and humorously) during "Good Will Hunting," and later plays over the closing scene. It's hard for me to hear it without thinking of this and the Arrested Development scenes (not just Michael and Maeby singing it, but later Lindsay and George Michael, to similar effect).
The "skyrockets in flight" line was very relevant at the time because it was the #1 hit at the time of our nation's bicentennial on July 4th 1976. I remember fireworks everywhere at the time this song was all over the radio. This song is about a few "fireworks" of it's own.
That was a great year. Moving from the big city to country land. Having to ride a bus to school - no walking. My own bedroom. I'll always hold it near my heart
Correction "Silly Love Songs" by McCartney and Wings was #1 on 7/4/76. Afternoon delight hit #1 the following week. It was still all over the radio at that time and it's the song I think of when I think of the bicentennial.

This was one of those great summer songs of the late 70's. My favorite of this genre was "Moonlight Feels Right" by Starbuck featuring an epic marimba solo by Bo Wagner. A few other light ones were "I Like Dreaming" by Kenny Nolan and "Do You Wanna make Love" by Peter McCann.
Excellent suggestions. Haven't heard any of these in a long time but thinking about them instantly takes me back to the softer side of the 70s, in a nostalgic and sentimental way.

This song takes me back to the early to mid 70's. Her name was Debbie and it was at church camp. We didn't while at church camp but I used to go down and visit her brother in Arkansas. We never consumated out relationship, but the song was ours and always will be.

I was 4 years old when this hit #1, and I remember it very well! I obviously didn't know what it was about at that age, but it was different than everything else that was out. I think that's why it did so well on the singles chart.
If you could find the theme song to "Love American Style" it sounds like it could be this group. That was a TV show in the 70s.
In the first season of "Love American Style," the theme song was done by The Cowsills, and one could certainly find a similar harmonic sound. The theme was redone for the second season.

Will Farrell did an absolutely fantastic, actual cover of "Afternoon Delight" with a hilarious music video for his film "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy"!!! 🔥🔥🔥 Even if you do not do a reaction to it, it would be worth your while to check out. Although it would be better after seeing the movie, much like Prince's song "Purple Rain", taken out of context of the movie, is not nearly as evocative as it is after seeing the movie. R.I.P. Prince 💜

This song brings me back to my childhood in the 70's. I remember listening to it during the Bicentennial celebration and fireworks at the airport outside my hometown and thinking it was about fireworks and airplanes. Of course, I know now what it's really about, but what I really like is that it is sexy without being nasty.

This song was born from a restaurant menu* that had a small section called 'Afternoon Delight' and Bill Danoff took that with him and worked the song for a long time until he came out with this version. But yes, by the lyrics, isn't anything about what's on the menu. Loved your video! *This fact can be found on RUclips.
