I heard this as a little kid & never had a clue what it was about until well into adulthood. It was so catchy & wholesome sounding.
Same here. I could never figure out why they'd be shooting off fireworks during the day. It'd just make them hard to see.
Yes me too I had no idea, it was just a fun song to go around singing. What a total different time to grow up as a kid such innocence unlike today's society.
and how damn creepy are the singers?? !!!!!!!!!!!
#1 July 1976
Lol that is same with me love it lol
One of the sweetest songs about thinking of an upcoming sexual encounter that has ever been recorded!
Don't forget Paul McCain's "do ya wanna make love" (or just give me blue balls)
I've heard it worded as the cleanest dirty song ever written. Sweet really.
Do you remember Stay Awhile by The Bells?
It's actually Starland Vocal Band. I was 9 years old when it came out and I thought since it came out in 1976 that the skyrockets were just a reference to the bicentenial fireworks.
Same here I was 9 and played this 45 over and over, still wonder if my mom knew what this was about.
Haha, this is hilarious, but true. Haha.
I was 16 when this was released... Up until today, I would have bet my right arm the name of the group was Starlight Vocal Band... Mandela Effect?
70s music had a lot of creativity and diversity. This is a great one-hit wonder!
Ya this was before you had to be a child in order to score a pop hit.
Actually this wasn't a one hit wonder, Starland Vocal band actually wrote a number of hit, just other people performed the songs, as in maybe you heard the song 'Country Roads' sang by John Denver? Starland wrote the song and decided John Denver would be perfect to perform it
@@oldgeezer3324 I had no idea they wrote Country Roads....that is my favorite John Denver song. I can't even explain or express how much I love that song. Thank you very much for letting us know this.
@@davidpreneta3805The song Country Roads really does take you home doesn't it hehe
You had diversity about from what University?
FYI - One of the couples in this group, Bill and Taffy Danoff, wrote the hit song "Take Me Home, Country Roads" for John Denver. Which I highly recommend if you haven't reacted to it yet!
Yes, the guy who starts the lead vocals wrote several songs for Denver
Bill Danoff has stated he had never been in West Virginia before co-writing "Take Me Home, Country Roads," having written it in a house in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. He had even briefly considered using "Massachusetts" rather than "West Virginia", as both four-syllable state names would have fit the song's meter.
Wow, I did not know that. I always assumed John Denver wrote all his songs.
Song had such a wholesome sound the censors ignored it.
Early mid 70's. and yes we caught on right away what it was about, LOL. You looked surprised when the female vocalists came in, beside the great harmonies, those ladies can SANG.
Growing up in the AM radio era, and definitely understanding the song's topic, I was always very surprised that stations were so willing to play the song.😎
I really appreciate you digging my area. This band made me commit to my band in the 70s. Thanks for the memories. 💔
This song hit #1. Very popular and unique song. The harmonies were the most memorable part.
Hi Angela, You blushing to this song is so cute!!! Yes, great harmonies!!!
I heard this song as a kid & had no idea what it was about but I asked my mom what it meant & she, always the 60s flower child just told me & that left me even more confused! LOL I was only about 8. Fun to hear it again.
Yes, I knew what this song was about when it came out (yes, I am that old). I thought it was really cool because it got past the censors and (almost) everybody loved it.
Well, back in 76 I was 22 and I kind of worked it out but as you say, it's full of metaphors and can be interpreted on a more non-specific level. Lovely harmonies and a feel good song.
You got it right. Dodging censorship led to dual meanings and metaphors. This recording was actually more blatant in its wording but disguised through the harmonies and gentle beat.
I was laughing watching you trying to hold back your laugh....😄
It's exactly what you thought it was going to be!
Growing up in the 70's, we knew exactly what they meant and we enjoyed afternoon delight and it is still my preference as to when.
A great song from my day. I actually saw them open for John Denver in San Francisco decades ago.
Big Margot Chapman fan!
Rubbin sticks and stones together make the sparks ignite and the thought of rubbin you is getting so exciting ..lol
agree , the harmonies are great and the chemistry between the singers is fun to watch
I still love this song after all these years. I was a senior in high school. This was a summertime song. Great memories of things to come. Thanks for your great reaction as usual.
Now picture this. I am 7 riding in the backseat of my parent's avocado green station wagon. Listening to the AM radio. Oh! It's that fun song on the radio, "Afternoon Delight"! I sing at the top of my lungs. Then in the grocery store... I wondered why the women were smiling at me, singing.
I was in my twenties when I first heard this song back in the day. It didn't take long for me to get their drift 🤗🎵
Love your reaction! You were blushing! I was 20 years old had been married for 2 years in 76 when this came out, so yeah I knew what they were talking about the first time I heard it. 🤗🤔😎😊
Starland. Very harmonious. Love their blend.
Bicentennial summer of ‘76. Great memories 😎
Yes that was a great year for the fourth of July, such fun memories as a kid.
Excellent reaction!!! You look like the one girl singing in the band. That's a compliment!!!
No she doesn't.
This song was so good, yet so cheesy. It still puts a grin on my face after all these years. As a kid, I was clueless. As an adult, it was so obvious that I had to laugh at my naievety
I knew what's about after someone told me in 77 when I was 3 I think it was one of my cousins or my big sister after I first heard it in 76 when I was 2
The song was written and released back in 1976 if I am not mistaken, the song actually was written after they had lunch at one of their favorite spots, the menu actually had a lunch item called "Afternoon Delight". Bill decided to write a song about it while he was dating Taffy.
I love a breakfast wake up before sun up, a brunch snack, an afternoon delight, an early evening romp & that late night body rockin knockin boots kinda scrompin - PEACE LOVE n HIPPYNESS ✌☮
Sweetie, when I first heard this song, I knew exactly what they were sing about. I love this song!
I am from that era, and I've always had a dirty mind, so I figured out right away what this song was all about.
The blonde haired singer, Taffy Danoff and her husband next to her sang with John Denver on 'Take me home, country roads'.
This song sums up the vibe from the 70's!
Part of my extraordinary summer. Loved it.
Hi, one of my all time 70's songs...thanks. Cheers from Australia.
There was an episode of Arrested Development where Michael Bluth is singing a karaoke version of this song with his teenage niece when he realizes what the song is about and has to put a stop to it. Everyone in the audience is grossed out about him singing this with such a young girl but his niece doesn't have a clue about what's going on. He says something along the lines of "this song is way dirtier than I remember".
Hey you guys , I'm going home for some afternoon delight , see ye' ll tomorrow.🥰
Lol, most caught on real quick when the song debuted. Nice reaction
Well, I think the part about rubbing sticks and stones together make the sparks ignite and the thought of rubbing you gets me so excited, kind of gives it away.
This song was released in 1976 after the entire decade of the free love in the 1960's and right in the middle of disco. Believe me, EVERYONE knew right away that they were talking about sex. In fact, compared to a lot of what had come before and was being released at the same time, this song was almost quaintly old fashioned. Still a nice fun little song.
The two couples were married (no longer), the taller couple wrote John Denver’s hit “Take me home country roads”. I saw them back then as his opening band.
‘
I absolutely LOVED your facial expressions when the lyrics hit and fireworks were exploding. Great reaction!
There was a TV show in the early seventies called Love American Style. The theme song could have been sung by these people. As I recall, there were a lot of firework explosions to accompany the music. The shows title came from the 60s movie Divorce Italian Style. Just a fun fact.
Seinfeld used innuendo to great success with out being so blatant like other shows did later. The Contest was a good example. They never used the word. It made for great comedy. Those days are gone forever over a long time ago, oh yeah!
Angie, love your honest straightforward reaction. My request is, you guessed it, Pretzel Logic or anything from that album.
I was only 11 when this came out and had no idea. This song went to number one and won a Grammy.
Same here Mike. I just saw this right after I posted. It seems that kids at that age today are not as naive as we were back in the day!
That one goes back to my childhood. I agree with you it's easy to be blunt about something but covering it with creative innuendo takes more thought
When this tune came out I was already an adult and the term "Afternoon Delight" was well known by my generation, the song was fun, naughty, and yes they had killer harmony as a group, prior to this tune was another hit with loads of innuendo titled "Spiders and Snakes" by Jim Stafford which the censors wouldn't allow at first because they misunderstood one line in the song which actually goes "I was still lookin' for somethin' to slip down her dress" what the censors heard was "I was lookin' to slip down her dress", took almost a year for them to understand the tune before they allowed it to be released to the public airwaves back then.
Oh this is a goodie! Great throwback!💖✌️👍
Love your reactions to the 70's music!
I agree with your appreciation for their harmonies. For 46 years I had never thought of "Afternoon Delight" as anything more than having fun.
Get a nooner in... seriously!?! I had never thought of this song in those terms, I just liked the song. Now that I have that bit of information, I've got to rework the way I view this song.
I knew there was a great reason to subscribe to your channel, Angela!
When I was 5, this was my jam. I had no bloody idea. 😂
Angela's expression is priceless. Different time for sure. But you make my face hurt with your expression.
As a naive teenager I loved this song and sung it not knowing it meant afternoon rumpy pumpy🤣🤣🤣..oh the innocence of youth..
This was released just before my 12 birthday in 1976. I had no idea what it was about, but loved the song and I remember it playing constantly on the radio, and at the roller skating rink where I had my birthday party!! My friends and I would joyfully sing along,; clueless to what we were singing about 🤣.
Love this song!
Afternoon delights are awesome.
I went to school with John Carroll many moons ago in Stafford County,Va.He doesn’t know me ,he was older but remember him playing a boogie Woogie tune on piano in the gym for Talent day at Gayle Jr. High.He is on the left in the video.
The Starland Vocal Band had their own television variety show in 1977. It only lasted six episodes, but it introduced a young comedian named David Letterman to the TV-watching public.
There was a tv show aimed at kids on Australian tv called "Simon Townsend's Wonder World" and the host Simon Townsend had picked this song as the theme music and then someone told him what it really was about so for following seasons of his show he used a song he commissioned for the show
So we all grew up watching his show and listening to that song and not knowing what it meant
Growing up most of us didn’t really know what they were single but sounded great with a nice harmony.
They were singing about marital relations and there's nothing wrong with it. It deepens and strengthens the love between husband and wife. That strong, deep love makes it possible for a marriage to last and that's the best scenario for raising happy, healthy children.
There's nothing risqué about the song.
I remember church groups singing this in the 70's and 80's and they thought it was a wonderful tribute to God.
Or when lawrence welk thought 'one toke over the line' was a spiritual song.
I am dubious of that - sounds more like a punch line. There is nothing in the song that could make it a religious praise song. It could be taken as a reference to just spending a splendid afternoon with one's honey, but not a praise song.
It didn't take us very long. You after to remember the revolution was out of the gate.
They were the opening group for James Taylor back around 1970. Great concert in Tampa.
A great song! Amazing group! Haha I was born in 1970 wasn't till 1986 I figured it out!
I don't remember the expression being common before this song, although it might have been a regional thing. But yes, pretty much everyone knew they weren't singing about a picnic 😀
I really enjoyed watching you react to this 70's song. I was 15 in 1976 when this song came out and yes, I knew they were talkin' about getting' some...lol. I too, love the melody, the tight harmonies and the fact that this group of 4 were actually married to each other. Something I didn't know in the 70s. We didn't have the luxury of RUclips where you can learn so much. The group performed this song in 1998 at a tribute to John Denver, whose label, this band was under when they did this song. So cool. Thanks for doing this video.
WHOLE LOTTA LOVE WAS ON THE radio before this Song
This brings back such great memories of the Summer of 1976. It was played so much. I was a kid at the time and no idea what the song meant. I sensed a very wholesome vibe so I was surprised years later when I figured out the meaning.
Actually hit number 1 for a week I believe in 1976
I can't help but think about Good Will Hunting when I hear this song. 😂
Priceless reaction!!!
... such great harmonies, great arrangement.... makes happy... 😃🎶🌞👌👍❤️
I have to laugh because I was little and remember the song was so fun and catchy and the harmonies and ABSOLUTELY had no idea what the song was about until NOW. How funny!! I never even thought about it. Hahahahahha
You’ve got to see the Anchorman version of this. Classic!
This now-amusing soft-rock track was such a huge #1 hit back in the day. The band even won a Grammy as "Best New Artist" and had a TV variety show for a minute. But that was about it for them hit-wise and the couples split up as well, though not before one of the couples wrote the great John Denver hit "Take Me Home Country Roads."
It was a cute song but to give the band best new artist was beyond stupid.
@@hifijohn Yeah, they beat Boston that year for Best New Artist! Almost as bad as Debby Boone beating Foreigner in '77, lol.
Bill and Taffy, then sang as FAT CITY based in D.C. They had been writing COUNTRY ROADS in 1970-71. They brought Denver in on it and boy would I like to know the actual dealing over it and then signing with his company for AFTERNOON DELIGHT as it seems they got taken like many did in that time.
Great reaction. I haven't heard this in a long time. This was making people blush back then. Cutting edge material for back then. Harmonies are killer. Take care.
Check out their song Starting All Over Again ,live performance , amazing vocal performance.
My dad had this on Vinyl when I was a kid. I still remember the Garrard record player that would cue up disc after disc. This would come on and I had NO IDEA what I was hearing but I liked it. Always wondered why mom and dad were chuckling at me. I had no idea what bumpin’ uglies even was
I love this song and you’re the first RUclipsr I have seen react to it! It’s one of the first songs I remember hearing on the radio as a kid, I would sing along to it all the time having no idea what they were talking about 😅 I remember adults back then would snicker and laugh about the song.
"Afternoon Delight' eulogises about the delectation of arvo sexy-time with the words "Sky rockets in flight".
A 🇺🇸 #1, it caught the fancy of listeners, dominating American airwaves during that years Bicentennial summer.
That's a great song from.back in the day
A Classic! The guitar and vocals, especially the harmonies
are wonderful.
I think if you grew up in the 60’s and 70’s you remember what an innocent time it was. Songs like Afternoon Delight were enjoyed by people of all ages. I would think that more people concentrated on the harmonies than what the words could be suggesting. It was the Bicentennial… red white and blue…. Love American Style…
When we were kids we had no idea what was going on with the song...it JUST SOUNDED GOOD
Heard this at 8 years old, zero idea it was a song about getting some " sexy time " 😏😏🤣🤣
I was shingling roofs in the summer between years in college. We had a radio on the roof and sang this every afternoon instead of concentrating on the heat of the day!! Thanks for the flashback!!!
As the story goes, a couple of the band members were at a diner, and on the menu was something called "Afternoon Delight". The rest is history. If you want to hear a better example of their amazing harmonies, check out their cover of Paul Simon's "American Tune".
I had heard this story too.
Always loved this one
My favorite part of this whole classic song was watching your reaction, Angela, lol. You're always great! Here's to your next reaction. 🙏🙂💜
i remember when this came out 1976
When this song first hit the radio stations "I'm going home for a little afternoon delight" became a common dude thing to say, it definitely got into the culture.
I was 6 years old when this top the radio charts in the USA, and even then at the age of 6 years old I had a rather good idea of what many of the metaphors were implying.
Fun facts for you... This band also hosted a variety show on CBS that ran for 6 weeks in the hot summer of 1977. If I recall correctly David Letterman also got his start on that very same variety show that this band started. I know Letterman also contributed to the show behind the scenes somehow; however, I don't recall what else Letterman did regarding this show.
Back in my day we knew for sure what this was about ( mid 70's) . I enjoyed your reactions listening to it just as much as the song . Great Channel you have here
It's Starland Vocal Band.
I was wondering if anyone was going to correct that.
Always a fun little ditty
Didn’t take us long at all, we knew exactly what it was about.
My best friend used to sing this in the car with his little daughter until just recently finding out what the song was. He didn’t know until years later. Too funny!
When I was a kid I thought they was talking about a picnic 😂😂😂
Everyone knew what they were talking about. But yes, that is where that saying came from. The actual ROMANCE is gone from today's music. That song had one purpose only. To put smile on your face, which I noticed it did to you also.
Take a look at some of the older crooners like Barry White or Marvin Gaye. Their songs had a more erotic feeling but was still able to be played on the radio of the time. I would be willing to bet LARGE amounts of money that their music has convinced more females to commit dastardly deeds than anything out in the last 15 years or so. Songwriters of today have forgotten the emotion connected to the DEED. Love your channel.
How can you not sway with theis song !
Great catchy song that always bring a smile and watching your reaction made me laugh out loud.!
