Uncle Jesse - aka John Stamos was an "honorary Beach Boy" when I saw them perform with him in concert in the early 90's. He wasn't there for the classic 60's songs but they brought him out to play drums on this song and as I recall he stayed for others and did an amazing drum solo. And I want whatever evil magic keeps him, Tom Cruise and Elizabeth Shue from aging!!
This song appeared on the soundtrack to the hit movie, Cocktail starring Tom Cruise. The song went all the way to hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 during the summer of 1988. This song was The Beach Boys' only #1 song of the 1980s. By the way, John Stamos toured with them during the summertime of 1988. Great song indeed!!!
This song is criminally underrated. It is my favourite Beach Boys song - sublime vocals, effortlessly wonderful musicianship, and it doesn't sound like anyone other than The Beach Boys.
When "Kokomo" reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1988 for 1 week, it set the record for the longest span between a band's last two #1s (1966's "Good Vibrations & 1988's "Kokomo"). They invited John Stamos to be an honorary member of "The Beach Boys" which is why the Beach Boys made an appearance on "Full House." Brian Wilson (ironically had no involvement with this song) is the father of Carnie & Wendy Wilson (two members of the group "Wilson Phillips" - the third member, Chynna Phillips, is the daughter of John & Michelle Phillips - of "The Mamas & The Paps")
Stamos has been a huge Beach Boys fan probably his whole life. Like, I knew he was into them even before this. That must have been the ultimate highlight of his life.
You are right, and if you realize something , both songs are related to the beach in different Eras that define beach customs. "Good Vibrations" with the surf lifestyle in California in the 60s and "Kokomo" with the Caribbean lifestyle with luxurious Resorts and palm trees in the 80s.This band lives up to its name:The Beach Boys.
Stamos appeared in the video for “Kokomo” even though he didn’t expect to. “We were doing a special and the main thing was we were doing a version of ‘Wipeout’ with the Fat Boys, who were a rap group,” Stamos told The Birmingham News. At the time, Stamos and The Beach Boys stayed at a Disney resort called Grand Floridian. They were the resort’s first guests.
John Stamos is actually a very talented musician. He never made a big career out of it, but the man has talent. The Beach Boys made an appearance on Full House, John toured with them in the 80's. What a great time that was!!! I miss it! Thanks!!!

I worked at an accounting firm when this song was popular. I had a planned trip to Aruba when tax season ended as a way to help me get through it. This song lived in my head during those grueling months and I couldn't have asked for more. Loved it!! Aruba, Jamaica...
This song was played at our wedding reception in '89. This is from the soundtrack for the movie Cocktail, starring Tom Cruise and Bryan Brown. Uncle Jessie (Blackie from General Hospital) John Stamos, toured as the drummer for the beach Boys in the late '80s.
kokomo is also good at a karaoke bar because it's fairly easy and if you have a decent voice you can even start couples slow dancing. this has happened, cute to see. I'm happy folks are suggesting catchy songs for this channel.
This is from the late 80s, a time of change for the band. Brian Wilson, the real brains behind the group, had left, & his brother, Dennis, the drummer, had died. The rest of the Boys got back together with, yes, John Stamos on drums - he was a huge fan & long-time fan. This tune was from the soundtrack for a Tom Cruise film, 'Cocktail'. I haven't seen the film, but I do have the album.
Awful film, you haven't missed anything. If you really want to see it, move to The Netherlands. Cocktail has been on television here every year for almost 30 years. Overhere we say: Has cocktail been on television? Wonderful, than the summer can start for real now!
John Stamos (uncles Jessie) was the drummer for the beach boys for a period. I saw them in concert in 1992 in Australia and Stamos wasn't there because he was filming Full House.
Yes that's John Stamos on playing with the Beach Boys he plays with them when they need him too. They appeared on full house so many times cause of how close they are with John Stamos. John Stamos said this : Mike Love turns to my friend and says, ‘Who’s that?’ And he says, ‘That’s John Stamos; he’s on General Hospital and always has girls chasing him.’ And Mike Love, without missing a beat, says, ‘Get him onstage.'”
This song is from the movie Cocktail and was a huge, huge hit when it came out in 1988. I remember hearing Casey Kasem say during the Weekly Top 40 Countdown that because of this song people were trying to book holidays to this place called Kokomo. There is a Kokomo, IN but sadly there’s no real island destination called Kokomo. And I’ve never seen Cocktail, but I still keep this song on my playlists. I may have to put the movie on the list, too! Edit: See, this is the cool thing about your community-I have seen this video about a hundred times and never knew that was John Stamos!
@@pegatheetoo1437 From what I understand, the Kokomo in Key West was named that because people kept looking for it after this movie and the song came out. When the song was released, so i understand, the only Kokomo was in Indiana, and it's definitely not an island paradise.
I remember when this song first came out in 1988 and I was watching the videoclip wondering "Is that John Stamos?" Before too long I found out it actually was him.
YES! Thats uncle jesse. Hes been filling in as the drummer for the beach boys for a bit. Saw them in concert here in GA. a few years back and filled that bucket list item. GREAT GROUP!!!!
This from the movie "Cocktail" starring Tom Cruise. John Stamos played percussion for The Beach Boys. Also The Beach Boys appeared on a few episodes of Full House.
The original drummer was a Beach Boys brother, Dennis Wilson. Stamos started started performing with them in 1993 when the Beach Boys did a lot of concerts for flood relief in the Midwest.
John Stamos actually played with them earlier than 1993. On July 4th 1990 I was in Presque Isle Maine and they did a concert at the fairgrounds. We were shocked to see that Brian Wilson was actually touring with them as he didn't really tour much at the time.. then to see John Stamos playing drums was wild. Then they kicked it up a notch and when they started singing Surfer Girl , Paula Abdul (who was dating John Stamos at the time) came out on stage and started dancing with Mike Love... Until Stamos tapped him on the shoulder and cut in. One of my favorite concerts ever!
Wow! I've loved this song since it came out, and even after all the times I've seen the music video and watched Full House, I never knew that was John Stamos in the back!!
John Stamos is really good friends with the Beach Boys and they appeared on Full House several times. There was an episode where the family went to a Beach Boys concert and the family was on stage singing with them.
John Stamos (Uncle Jesse) played drums with the Beach Boys Occasionally Back in the 80's and he made an album with his own band. I saw him in Cupertino California at a very small club...my friends and I were dancing so close to him we could smell his cologne^^! Those were the days!!
This is my all-time favorite Beach Boys song. As a lifelong Parrothead, I’ve always wished that Jimmy Buffett would record a cover of this song. Buffett has made a career of recording Caribbean sounds. The Beach Boys have always been about California beach music. But in their first attempt, they out-Buffetted Buffett. Awesome song!
Someone may have answered you already, but John Stamos has been a drummer for the Beach Boys, on and off, since 1985. He still tours when family or filming conflicts aren't an issue. I've seen him in concert a few times with them.
Very big hit in the '80s. This and Wipeout(fat boys) help them to hit on the charts for the '80s. Fun fact it was the Beach boys that actually started the acid Rock or hippie Rock in the sixties. They and the Beatles were so much influenced and rivals against each other they started taking it up a notch. And rock was never the same... Out with the teenie bop Rock, in with the deep meaning classics.. so influence that a lot of the blues artists became rockers. Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin.. etc.... And yes uncle Jess was a beach boy drummer for the '80s. Lol
The song was for the movie Cocktail with Cruise, and Stamos did play with the Beach Boys for quite a while touring with them. They also appeared on full house as well.
Yes John Stamos drummed for the Beach Boys when they needed a drummer. He's tight with the Beach Boys and yes, The Beach Boys guested on Full House too when Uncle Jessie was in his band Jessie and the Rippers! I love love love this song!
John Stamos was my first crush, too! He’s never been a part of The Beach Boys, but he’s played with them several times, and they were even on Full House a couple of times.
Dennis Wilson was the drummer for the Beach Boys........Brian Wilson's brother......he passed away! Tom Cruise was in a movie called "Cocktail", I think! Must have been filmed in Kokomo! lol! I know of a Kokomo, Indiana!
I'm so glad you guys did this song! I actually grew up in a little town in Indiana... called Kokomo! It was a small town and sadly no beaches in sight. Haha. When we told people we were from Kokomo they asked if it was an island! I've always loved this hit by the Beach Boys as it holds some sentimental value to my family.
😅I grew up in Kokomo too, 5309 Council Ring... I have the same reaction from people.. they think it's in the Florida Keys... ironically, I now live in Miami, a few miles north of the Keys..
John Stamos was so creative and found a way to include them on several episodes of Full House. He's played drums for them for quite a while. FYI, he also loves THE KING Mr. Elvis Presley!
I actually saw them in concert Memorial Day weekend this year... 2023! It was only 2 of the original performing, but they did a great job selecting their replacements... brought back a ton of memories from my teen years in the 80's when I saw them in concert for the first time...
My all-time favorite...and I'm old enough to remember their first! I don't listen to any other Beach Boys song now, but I can't pass up this one. And I'm a sucker for a sax.
This song was on the soundtrack for the Tom Cruise film, Cocktail. John Stamos only toured with them for a short time. This song was very catchy and a great summertime hit!💖💖
In the early 90's our family went to Beach Boys concert in St. Louis. John Stamos was their drummer. The concert was so fun beach balls bouncing around in the crowd and Uncle Jesse on the drums 🏖❤❤❤
Just watched this again guys and the man to the right of sax player Mike Love as you look at the screen is Bruce Johnston who wrote I Write The Songs. Carl Wilson in middle had such an amazing voice.
Just to add to what someone said about John Stamos being in it; He's always been a huge Beach Boys fan. He met them by accident, then through the years actually performed with them (he's a pretty good musician himself) and remained friends since. As a side note, Tom Cruise isn't actually in the video, it's cut scenes from the movie Cocktail, which Kokomo was featured in. Love the vids, guys... Keep em coming. Much love to y'all!
really dig how in the INTRO where it lists vacation spots, they suddenly drop that and cut into a nice flowering musical line: wow that's really hip and useful to move the song immediately forward.
You mentioned that the Beach Boys having kids by the time Kokomo came out. Brian Wilson has two daughters, Carnie and Wendy Wilson who were 2 of the 3 singers in an early 90's group Wilson Phillips. The third member of the trio was Chynna Phillips, daughter of John and Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and Papas.
I saw them in concert with the tour connected with this song. The warmup act was Katrina and the Waves. The audience reaction was funny. The crowd sat on their hands until the 1 hit from the warmup act was played. The crowd greeted it with warm applause. The next time we heard from the audience was when Katrina and the Waves closed out their set with Wipeout. Then the crowd went wild for the Beach Boys.
From the movie “Cocktail” starring Tom Cruise and Elizabeth Shue. Uncle Jessie occasionally play drums with the Beach Boys later in their career and the band would occasionally appear on Full House too.
For those of us too old for Full House, we remember John Stamos from his stint on General Hospital, along with Rick Springfield - that was in the very early 80s. I don't know if I ever saw this video (of course I knew the song), great choice, very fun!
A while back I went to see The Beach Boys in concert, and John Stamos was playing the drums! There is Kokomo Indiana, and Kokomo , Hawaii. I sang this song in a play, when I was in Elementary School.
My strongest memory of this song comes from travelling from SE PA to Watertown NY in a snowstorm. We were somewhere near Binghamton NY, or maybe near Syracuse by then . . . The car was starting to freeze up, visibility getting worse by the mile . . . and then this song comes on the radio.
I really loved your reaction to this video and how observant you are. Explanations are posted below just keep reacting as we all get to look through fresh eyes and ears.
During the 80’s John Stamos was asked to be their touring drummer and He said YES!!!! They also appeared in Full House. Now The Beach Boys also made an appearance on Home Improvement as the next door neighbor Wilson’s Cousins.
Beachboys are my favorite Ever!! Beach grandpas, now. The Beatles got some of their ideas from the Beachboys. The 2 band were good friends. Yes, John Stamos played the drums, for a while after Dennis died(the middle brother). Baby brother Carl, sang lead on most of these songs. He had the voice of an angel. Brian Wilson was the genius of geniuses!
I missed the first mention but when they mentioned "Uncle Jesse" playing drums all I could see on my phone was an obviously much younger man than Pyle. Then there was a closeup and the penny dropped.
Stamos was a friend and sometime drummer with the group on special occasions. Durinng this video he just happened to be there at the resort where they were filming so he got asked to be in it. This was one of their biggest hits and in my opinion one of their best songs especially since it was later in their career.
The Beach Boys appeared on an episode of Full House. John Stamos got friendly with the band and was invited to play along on some of their live performances. Tom Cruise is there via clips from his movie Cocktail, which this song was in.
John Stamos (Uncle Jessie) started his acting career in 1982 on the soap opera General Hospital, and in 1985 he started touring with The Beach Boys and continued to do so into the early '90s. He's performed on and off with them since them, the latest time being at a benefit concert just three months ago. He's obviously a man of many talents.
Everyone wanted to go to Kokomo! My parents loved this later Beach Boys hit, I loved John Stamos being in this music video! For another fun Beach Boys song: “Fun, Fun, Fun”.
Guys, check out the Beach Boys song 'That’s Why God Made the Radio', it's from 2012 (!) and it sounds as if they wrote it in the sixties. Astounding. I really think they're immortal.
Rob, Amber, THIS is what I call Top Down music. Blue Ridge Parkway , top down on the Mazda Miata, radio set on Stun and cruising....no destination, just killin' time...😍
AAhhh! The best part of the Beach Boys are their harmonies! The link between The Beach Boys and John Stamos came while John was playing the bad boy on General Hospital. Some of his rabid fans were chasing him at a Beach Boys concert and he had nowhere to run but up onto the stage where the Beach boys were about to do an encore. Carl asked if he knew how to play an instrument. he said he could play the drums so they let him play. They have been friends ever since.
Yea, John Stamos plays with The Beach Boys. Stamos has occasionally performed in concert with The Beach Boys, dating back to 1985, typically playing drums and various other percussion instruments. In 1988, he appeared in their video for "Kokomo", in which he played both the conga drums and the steel drums. In 1990, he played drums for them on the title track of the comedy Problem Child and also appeared in the song's music video. In 1992, he sang lead vocals on a new version of "Forever" for their album Summer in Paradise. The song was originally written and sung by Beach Boy Dennis Wilson and released in 1970. The song was also featured twice on Full House. The first was a recording sung at his character's wedding, while the second was a recording sung for his character's twin sons. The 1992 music video, titled "Forever by Jesse and the Rippers," featured Stamos predominantly. However, three of The Beach Boys members are briefly shown singing harmonies with Stamos: Carl Wilson, Bruce Johnston, and Mike Love.
The Beach Boys are my favorite band I have seen them like 10 times for the 80’s into the 2000’s. I was a the first concert that John join them there was a writers strike going on in Hollywood so he came to play. New Jersey at the Garden in 87. I had a to do a double take because I couldn’t believe my eyes.
The beach boys were on an episode of Full House. I saw them quite a few years ago and John Stamos showed up and played the drums for the show. It was awesome!

I just tune in once in a while but have you seen anyone from the 60s and 70s. There’s so many good ones it’s hard to choose. Just saying
The Beach Boys had a cameo in Full House.
This song is criminally underrated. It is my favourite Beach Boys song - sublime vocals, effortlessly wonderful musicianship, and it doesn't sound like anyone other than The Beach Boys.
One thing’s for sure, you overrate it😂

We already do, just not on camera
I appreciate all generations of music. Even before the 1900s

John Stamos would play drums with them whenever he had the chance. They were all good friends.
I just want to let you guys know that when I’m depressed and life gets hard I watch you and my day gets better. Thank you guys
Stamos appeared in the video for “Kokomo” even though he didn’t expect to. “We were doing a special and the main thing was we were doing a version of ‘Wipeout’ with the Fat Boys, who were a rap group,” Stamos told The Birmingham News. Wipeout with the Fat Boys is so fun too!!
He continues on from time to time with them through the years.
And now Disney wants to change the entire layout/design of the Grand Floridian
Got to see Stamos play with them at the NY State Fair in the 80's.
How could a rap group do "Wipeout"? It's an instrumental with only ONE word: "Wipeout"?
I love Surfer girl, catch a wave, in my room and little deuce coupe. I like the early hits.
All great. Would add California Girls and Sloop John B. Not sure if they have reacted to either of those.

😅I grew up in Kokomo too, 5309 Council Ring... I have the same reaction from people.. they think it's in the Florida Keys... ironically, I now live in Miami, a few miles north of the Keys..
Cool….I never knew Uncle Jessie was an official Beach Boy! That is always a fun, upbeat song. Thanks for the reaction Y’ALL! #hearts ❤
cocktail & this song together at this time. perfect
John Stamos was so creative and found a way to include them on several episodes of Full House. He's played drums for them for quite a while. FYI, he also loves THE KING Mr. Elvis Presley!
There was also a song that Jesse and The Rippers or was it just Jesse that in real life Dennis Wilson wrote. It was a ballad
This was just too much fun!!! I enjoyed your reaction so much! Thanks for the smiles.
“Cocktail” should be added to your list of movie reactions :)
The whole soundtrack to Cocktail is just plain good, but this just might be my favorite song from it. I defy anyone to hear this and not smile.
Many of the Beach Boy's songs left you with, " I wish that I were there."
You got Me swinging & swaying with You... And I found Myself chiming in on the ending chorus... A Fun Song for Early Summer Vibes...
Mike Love and Carl Wilson created some of the best work of all time especially on this one!!
Mike Love was/is a poser. The heart and soul of The Beach Boys is Brian Wilson, a musical genius.
@@ZippityDont No Mike Love fan myself, but I love Carl Wilson's voice in this and he really took over as the creative force in later years.
@@ZippityDont Too bad Landy robbed us of gold by keeping Brian out of this song.
This is my favourite of their songs. I used to listen to it over and over again.
This song was on the soundtrack for the Tom Cruise film, Cocktail. John Stamos only toured with them for a short time. This song was very catchy and a great summertime hit!💖💖
still is
Stamos does play with them occasionally still
In the early 90's our family went to Beach Boys concert in St. Louis. John Stamos was their drummer. The concert was so fun beach balls bouncing around in the crowd and Uncle Jesse on the drums 🏖❤❤❤
One of their best songs definitely.
80‘s…wake up! you have to go to school…and this came every morning on the Radio.
Saw the Beach Boys a few years ago. 3 hour show and they were still solid. John Stamos was percussion
Just watched this again guys and the man to the right of sax player Mike Love as you look at the screen is Bruce Johnston who wrote I Write The Songs. Carl Wilson in middle had such an amazing voice.
Such a fun, feel good song.
Yes. So makes you want to book your flight ✈️
The beach boys were in a episode of Full House, and Uncle Jessie played with them in it.
John Stamos eventually became the full time drummer years ago and performed with them off and on for years before that.
Kokomo was used in the Tom Cruise movie "Cocktail". Yup, he played a bartender. And yes, that's Uncle Jesse. Fun song.
I think it was actually written for the movie.
The Tom Cruise section is from the movie Cocktail. Kokomo was on the movie soundtrack 😊
Loved John Stamos as Blackie Parrish and Rick Springfield as Doctor Noah Drake on General Hospital then followed with their music.
A while back I went to see The Beach Boys in concert, and John Stamos was playing the drums! There is Kokomo Indiana, and Kokomo , Hawaii. I sang this song in a play, when I was in Elementary School.
You can't fail with a Beach Boys song!
Years ago, the Beach Boys performed in St. Louis, MO under the Arch, and uncles jesse played with the group that night.
You paused on a bearded guy and were talking about uncle Jessie, I’m like “that guy doesn’t look that much like Denver Pyle”…
😂
I missed the first mention but when they mentioned "Uncle Jesse" playing drums all I could see on my phone was an obviously much younger man than Pyle. Then there was a closeup and the penny dropped.
Stamos was a friend and sometime drummer with the group on special occasions. Durinng this video he just happened to be there at the resort where they were filming so he got asked to be in it. This was one of their biggest hits and in my opinion one of their best songs especially since it was later in their career.
Uncle Jessie also did a remake of the Beach Boys song "Forever" which is an absolute beautiful song! Please watch that one (beach boy version)
Stamos has played with the Beach Boys off and on for many years. The original drummer was Dennis Wilson.
The Beach Boys appeared on an episode of Full House. John Stamos got friendly with the band and was invited to play along on some of their live performances. Tom Cruise is there via clips from his movie Cocktail, which this song was in.
They appeared in several episodes, I believe.
Oh I Remember that, great memories
Me too, I loved em both...they all got together for this and others .
Yes, The Beach Boys appeared on Full House a few times in the ‘80s, including a concert playing this song
Everyone wanted to go to Kokomo! My parents loved this later Beach Boys hit, I loved John Stamos being in this music video! For another fun Beach Boys song: “Fun, Fun, Fun”.
Kokomo was a beach used in the lyrics of Chuck Berry’s hit “No particular place to go” back in the 60’s!
Carl Wilsons vocals are as usual outstanding!
This has been one of my favourite songs since I was young.. in fact I loved it so much I named my first cat Kokomo 🫶🇨🇦
Surfer Girl, from their early years, is a beautiful beach song. Check it out!😉
The sax solo is nothing short of pure magic.
Guys, check out the Beach Boys song 'That’s Why God Made the Radio', it's from 2012 (!) and it sounds as if they wrote it in the sixties. Astounding. I really think they're immortal.
The most recent Beach Boys classic IMO.
Rob, Amber, THIS is what I call Top Down music.
Blue Ridge Parkway , top down on the Mazda Miata, radio set on Stun and cruising....no destination, just killin' time...😍
This sing was featured in Tom Cruise's movie "Coctail". This song was also a big comeback/hit in the mid 80's for the Beach Boys.
I came to the comments to say this and saw you beat me to it. Cocktails is one of my all time favorite movies 🍺🍻🥂🍾🍷🥃🍸
We certainly got everything here. Even Mike Love jamming on the sax. Classic.
If you want to react to a great Beach Boys song with great vocals and harmonizing....you should react to Sloop John B.
This is a great song, really makes you feel like youre on a tropical island. Be true to your school is also a great beach boys song
The beach boys were on an episode of Full House.
I saw them quite a few years ago and John Stamos showed up and played the drums for the show. It was awesome!
