I grew up with The Beach Boy's music & had a lot of their records. Brian Wilson was the genius songwriter of the group. They span many decades but I love their early stuff from the 60's-70's. Their music conveys such happy innocent days of youth (surfing, cars, romance). They had tons of hits such as "Surfin' U.S.A.", "Don't Worry Baby", "Surfin' Safari", "I Get around", "California Girls", "Help Me, Rhonda", "Barbara Ann", "Heroes & Villains", "Sloop John B.", "Fun Fun Fun", "Little Deuce Coupe", "In My Room", "Good Vibrations" etc.
Brian Wilson did not write this tune: written by John Phillips / Terry Melcher / Mike Love / Scott Mackenzie. The verse of the song came from a demo by John Phillips (formerly of the Mamas & the Papas) and Scott McKenzie (best known for his 1967 song “San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair)," which Phillips wrote). The Beach Boys' Mike Love added the chorus which lists the names of islands. Drums are steel drums.
Hi guys. If you ever saw the movie Cocktail with Tom Cruise this song was used in that film. Also you should check out the actual video of this. If you ever watched Full House on TV, you will remember Uncle Jesse. He was playing the bongos and conga drums on this. Don't believe he was playing the steel drums though. They had several people playing percussion on it.
The Beach Boys were my very first concert at Summerfest in Milwaukee 1975 with my brother. I was 15 and my brother was 17. Then last summer, 47 years later I got to see The Beach Boys again. You guessed it. With my brother at Waterfest In Oshkosh, WI. What a great time!
This was probably their last big hit. When I was about 8, I spenr a day at my aunt's house, and she had like 2 dozen Beach Boys albums. We stacked them all up on her record player and listened to them all day. Mt favorite song of theirs is ' B.' I also like a lot of their other classics like 'Help Me Rhonda' and 'Shut You Down. They have a big catalog to go through.
ITS FROM THE MOVIE COCKTAIL!! It was written by John Philips of the Mamas and Papas...and Scott Mckenzie of If you are going to San Francisco, Wear some flowers in your hair... fame..
The Beach Boys, well Brian Wilson has went through a lot of musical experimentation during his life. Good Vibrations is probably their biggest experiment hit. I still love them for their surfing and teenage years songs, Fun Fun Fun, Little Honda, 409, Help Me Rhonda, are all some their early years stuff and just fun to listen to.
Song was from the movie "Cocktail" with Tom Cruise. I know the drums as Trinidad Steel Drums. I love those drums. Beach Boys sang surfer songs back in the day.😊❤ Just to be fair, both of you were wrong with the pronunciation.
This is from around 1988 which was waaay past their original heyday of the 1960’s. It was a massive hit. Huge! And not all that different from their older stylings. The Beach Boys are considered one of the most innovative and influential rock groups of all time. You should definitely delve deeper into their discography.
I noticed something nobody has mentioned that this song with from a famous movie with Tom Cruise called cocktail it was a very well-made movie I don't know how good it did at the box office but I watched it after when it was in video and I really liked it it was made in 1988 and if you watch another video of this on RUclips you will see the actual video they made including clips from the movie and the Beach Boys look a lot older and amazingly enough the drummer was John Stamos from Full House so people are shocked to see him in the video but he did some traveling in 1988 with the Beach Boys that's why you see him
No, they are definately not a capella. John Stamos from the series “Full House” used to sit in on the drums with the Beach Boys and was featured in their Kokomo video. One of my favorites of theirs is “God Only Knows”.
....'Acapella' means unaccompanied voice, as in a singer or a vocal ensemble😀 without musical instruments along side supporting the vocals. A 'barbershop quartet' is an example of an acapella style. Another example is found in the genre called 'doo wop' a.k.a 'street corner harmony'. Classical music is full of acapella music....
If you ever watched the movie 'Cocktail' with Tom Cruise from back in the day.... that is the movie that Kokomo was in :D probably where you heard it....
I think Hawaii for one owes the Beach Boys billions of dollars haha, all this song does is make you want to go to Hawaii or any beach resort, gotta watch Cocktails now, haha
And once again Dee is correct and Chod is wrong. Chod singing a cappella (or acapella) means singing without music as an accompaniment. The Beach Boys songs had music in their songs. Although they did sing with great harmony. 😉
Like cocoa for cocoa-puffs. The Beatles admired them very much for their harmonies and chordal structures they added to rock music. The Calypso beat to this song adds to the tropical mood. Steel Drums and you can see how many cultures use everything from garbage can lids to scrap metal to play them. ruclips.net/video/rZ642zSpQgc/видео.html
Kokomo was on the soundtrack for the 1988 film Cocktail, starring Tom Cruise. Maybe that's where Dee heard it. Mike Love, Carl Wilson, Al Jardine, and Bruce Johnston performed the vocals on this song (thus spake Wikipedia), but Brian Wilson was not on this particular song. Brian Wilson is a musical genius, just not here.

They had a whole episode of Full House, they go to Hawaii and at the end they’re at their concert and Uncle Jesse does join them.
Always enjoy this song and It has a great tropical island vibe! Would love to be on one now🏝🍹
Such nostalgia... the video I remember from my teenage years had John Stamos on the bongos...... my dog, what a heartthrob lmao.....

This was the Beach Boys for the grown ups, not teenagers. The official video is great too.
Brian Wilson is widely regarded as a musical genius Chod.

Steel drums. This was one of the first songs that the band did without Brian Wilson.

Love the banter on how to pronounce Ko Ko Mo
They Were In Comption With The Beatles And Were Loved In England
The video is really good. I think John Stamos plays the drums. The song was in Cocktail a Tom Cruise movie
The movie sucked.
John Stamos on the bongos

The song was part of the soundtrack to the movie - "cocktails" starring Tom Cruise and Elisabeth Shue.
This is definitely my favorite Beach Boys song!
CoCo Mo ( like hot cocoa)
Its an Island
This was the Beach Boys twenty years later, they mellowed.
Love this song! The beat, the harmonies, and the horns and steel drums. Perfect.
Love Evie's hair the way she has it here...the B boys have the sound here...very laid back...Once again another winner
Different sound since it was from the '80's whereas most of the Beach Boys hits were '60's into the early '70's...
Great reaction to the beach boys xxx
Movie “Cocktail” with Tom Cruise. Grew up on Beach Boys! Saw them in concert in 1967!
Thanks for playing. City in Indisna also called “Kokomo!”
The drums are called timbales. To hear similar songs to this by The Beach Boys, please check out Island Girl and Island Fever. Thanks!
Great catchy song....try their song God Only Knows its so beautiful!!!!!!!
Best way to think of Kokomo, is 'Cocoa' 'Mo' lol
This is DEFINITELY DEE'S VIBE!!!
Yes, uncle Jessie playing the congas!. Great song.

Us millennials all recognize this from Kermit doing it in the previews on every VCR movie from back in the day
These were Caribbean steel drums. Timpani drums are a deeper sound
The drums you are trying to remember was actually described in the lyrics. “We’ll be falling in love, to the rhythm of a steel drum band..”
No, they are definately not a capella. John Stamos from the series “Full House” used to sit in on the drums with the Beach Boys and was featured in their Kokomo video. One of my favorites of theirs is “God Only Knows”.
My mom used to play this when I was little all the time!
Dee is definitely the "Pretty Mama" the Beach Boys are singing about!
Great song, towards the end of the breakup.
You guys are awesome! Glad yall loved it
Were you referring to the steel drums or the Congos. Steel drums need to be returned at least once a year professionally

There is a spoof of the referring to the feet of camels.
They are steel drums. Depending on the size and shapes of the grooves make the different tones.
The Dirt Band 'American Dream'... Nuf said. Love 'Kokomo'...
Then you really want to get into Pet Sounds....a masterpiece.... Considered one of the greatest albums of all time.....
it sounds different to their other stuff most probably because this was a lot later in the late 80s . . . 88
Check out Sail on Sailor by the B Boys....
