LITERALLY DOUBLE THE WEIGHT!!! Frontier vs Tar River Loader Snow Plows For Your John Deere Tractor!

  • I had the opportunity to compare two different loader mounted snow plows recently. One is a Tar River Loader Plow that I represent and the other is a very nice Frontier AF10F loader mounted snow plow that came in as part of a tractor package I purchased. Both of the snow plows will be a perfect fit for a John Deere 1 Series or 2 Series such as a 1025r or 2025r. They are both 60" wide, manual angle, have John Deere Quick Attach for the mount.
    However, there are some significant differences as well between these two plows and that's what we'll take a look at in this video. Cost, weight, and quality of features seem to vary greatly. Sometimes spending more isn't always better. So, take a look and let me know which snow plow you'd prefer for your John Deere 1025r or 2025r. Thanks for watching!

    You correctly pointed out the mounting brackets on the frontier, which comes with (2) 1-3/8" diameter cylinders
    for around a $650 option. Also the skid shoes shown are an option as well. No snow in the NW as of yet so I
    can't report on how well the unit works. Keep up the excellent videos.

    Big diameter dish shoes are best for gravel driveways . I would never be without a loader mounted blade for snow . You can knock banks over and reach farther and no messing around install . Also keeps tractor front wheels away farther from drop offs etc . Nice units your selling . Gives buyers there needed requirements . Going heavy duty you can use the blade for other things beside snow . 👍

    Looks as the Tar River blade can be used as dirt/snow plow. The Frontier plow has a classic design garden tractor dirt/snow blade.

  • @davidcarleton6928

    The old (318) 54 blade had a single hydraulic cylinder with a locking pin which is a problem when mounted to a FEL. I have mine mounted to a 2305 FEL. You can use a 3rd function for the cylinder but the pin release/engage still has to be manual unless you get REALLY fancy with your hydraulic circuit. I would guess the duel cylinders eliminated the need for a pin.

    I bought the frontier as part of my package when buying a 1025r. Not sure if i need front wheel weights as the front end would pick up when plowing. The Tar being heavier might be the answer to keeping the front tires on the ground.

  • @jd-fzcountrylife9838
    @jd-fzcountrylife9838 4 года назад +2

    The frontier with the duel cylinder angel kit with the 3rd function works great on my 1025R.
    Looks like you would need a lot of weight on the back of the tractor to compensate the weight difference between the two plows.

    • @GoodWorksTractors

      Possibly, but the Tar River plow weighs about as much as a 54" pusher. So, I wouldn't be too concerned about that. Thanks for watching Garry!

      A 54" snow pusher (reference my many snow pusher videos) connects to the loader arms the same way the plow does. I'm not talking about a frame mounted blade. The weight of a frame mounted blade is significantly less anyways.

    I may be wrong but I would like to assume that Frontier have a close relationship with JD and have access to their engineering department. I'm guessing that the lighter (flimsier?) plow they offer takes into account the possible loads transmitted to the JD tractor and loader assembly. It should in fact be the weak link that gives before damaging your tractor. The other plow, which is impressively stout, will not give at all and the tractor is likely to suffer first. It could probably be used for clearing more of the Amazon Rain Forest!
    Then again as I said at the outset, I could be wrong and they just cheaped out!

  • @georgesimpson3113
    @georgesimpson3113 4 года назад +4

    With the other attachments you are lifting other things (dirt, logs, etc) with it... with a plow you aren't lifting anything else... and as someone that has been plowing with a truck for about 30 years I can tell you go with the heavier plow. The TR will last much longer than the JD plow. The heavier plow will also scrap better. I do see a difference in attack angles on the cutting edge. And the JD seems to have smother finish. Should be that the snow doesn't stick to it. Spray should help both with any sticking. The JD will not hold up for anything heavy. The TR is how a plow should be built. It looks like something is missing on the TR shoes but - Many, many guys don't run shoes anyway and just take them off. Most don't know how to adjust them correctly. Id give you $500 for the JD if there was no other option. The TR is worth more anyday.

    It all comes down to design. Everything is now designed on computer with; Computer Aided Design or CAD. You design the individual parts and then assemble them together. The next step is complicated and called "Finite Element Analysis". In this process you evaluate the structural capability of the assembly and individual components. Design can be optimized for strength, weight, durabilit and cost. This is why some things, such as the D series tractors now look so "cheaply" made to some people. They didn't have this capability when they built the older tractors such as the 317 which is built like a tank. You cannot be competitive in today's market without optimizing your design.

  • @znovosad555

    actually frankly, i’d say the frontier is designed very similar to a professional grade truck plow like from fisher, western, meyer, etc. it’s simple but the weight distribution on the parts makes up for it. it has a wider more evenly distributed frame which creates less stress points. the y frame is a super common plow frame design. having that wider frame stance also means when actually pushing snow, it’ll be stronger on either end where you actually want it. i think they’re both interesting but frankly i would say the frontier takes the cake in simplicity and sticking with a proven effective design.

  • @djcanfield1

    Very interesting comparison! It looks like the tar River has a rubber edge-- definite plus to me (for snow). The extra weight of the Tar River would also be nice if you run in float position. I *do not like* the two pin setup of the Tar River. Those types of pins are a hassle, especially when you're gloved, cold and buried in snow. JD wins on this point.

    To me the tar river looks over complicated, the frontier looks good but if it's less than 200lbs it's probably built a bit too light. I've been looking at the HLA blades, we run them on our larger equipment. The SB100060 is similar in design to the frontier but it's about the same weight or slightly heavier than the tar river, so it's obviously built strong.

    • @GoodWorksTractors
      @GoodWorksTractors  4 года назад +1

      I guess I don't see what's complicated about it. There's not a bunch of additional moving parts, mainly more channeling/bracing and thicker beefier construction. You can't have it both ways. I sell the HLA blades as well. Very few of them as they are very pricey compared to the Tar River or even Frontier. Not really sure why though. Their pushers are priced well and I sell a ton of those attachments.

    • @macfarms
      @macfarms 4 года назад

      @@GoodWorksTractors Maybe over complicated is a bit of poor wording on my part. I mean really any snow plow is pretty simple in it's function. But, just the way the trip mechanism works, not that I don't find it interesting, it's certainly a different take on it outside the norm. Looking at it sitting on the pallet at first glance you'd think it was upside down, which kind of threw me off a bit, hence the need to add a parking stand, I assume the frontier doesn't have one because it sits flat on the ground without it. The 2 pin pivot on the Tar river seems like a good idea but I'm not sure if there is any advantage to it, I think it would get old fast having to angle it much so a hydraulic angle kit would be a must. The 2 pin system would be stronger but you have to realize it's a small sub compact or compact pushing it not a D8 Cat haha. I'm not sure what the prices are like for HLA stuff for you guys, I'm up here on the east coast of Canada so I guess if nothing else it won't have to cross the border. I think the SB100060 up here is around $1500-1800 CAD, off the top of my head. So that would be $1100-1400 USD around there.

    • @GoodWorksTractors
      @GoodWorksTractors  4 года назад +2
