Pencil irons:
Xytronic pencil iron- Good cheap iron
Hakko FX-600 iron- Better cheap iron
Cordless (OK in a pinch for small joints)
Hakko FX-901- Use NiMH batteries for better performance
Soldering stations:
Hakko FX-888D- Best new soldering station for $100
Pace ST30 (analog)- Great upper end soldering station
Pace ST50 (digital)- Works the same as analog just touch buttons
Metcal MX500- Great iron but silly expensive
Used Pace and Metcal soldering stations can be a very good buy on eBay. For Metcal look for the STSS-PS2E and MX500 models.

I couldn't help but notice the second iron was left down easy. That poor red iron was used as a spear.

What about pace tips, is there a temperature adjustment of the pace or is it again build into the tip and are they more affordable than the metcal.

Have you tried to google "metcal stss documentation" or "metcal stss schematic"? There have been multiple threads on electronics forums about repair and service of these soldering stations.
