One tip. When you hold the soldering iron when melting, gently stir and then press the vacuum trigger. Then you will achieve the desired result for the full release of the pin.

In dave's video it seems like he had more luck wiggling the pin while the vacuum is on, to prevent the pin sticking to the edge: Ft50m8UU5WQ 21:37

Like you said wiggle it while it works, that's the reason for the wiggle. He should check out ruclips.net/channel/UCU9SoQxJewrWb_3GxeteQPA Mr. Carlson's Lab for the most meticulous man on youtube and watch him do it parts almost fall out by themselves.

Can you do another review of the same MX-DS1 desoldering gun? I'd like to campare its current performance to that of the first time tests. Isn't logenvity the most important factor to determine the quality of a product? I hope you'll find some time to do a video on this one.

I may include it in a future video but it's still behaving exactly the same. It's a very good piece of kit and I've not found any weak parts all this time later

About your use of the screwdriver... the first time you pry up a DIP device and pull out a via, you'll give up the screwdriver.

I see a lot of used Metcal STDS-DS1 desoldering pistols on sale via eBay. What is the difference between the MX-DS1 and the STDS-DS1? Searching for information on the STDS-DS1 turns up little or nothing. I am guessing the MX-DS1 has some type of disposable filter keeping junk from getting to the air compressor.

What is the most common desoldering tip (model number) that would be used for majority of the work

Most component legs are around 0.4 to 0.7mm in diameter, so that kind of size should do.

Any of the oil-free compressors seem to work well.
