There was a girl at my school who wouldn't talk to anyone throughout all of elementary school. Most people, actually everyone, just "forgot" she existed and went about their day, but I made it a point to smile and say hello to her every single day, even though she said nothing back. After an entire year of saying hello to her, she finally let out the quietest "hi", but it was such a beautiful moment. I just smiled and said "see you tomorrow!", but I was so happy for her on the inside. She wouldn't talk to anyone except for her family and two children at school who were family friends. Despite this, she always said hi to me after that first time, and I'll always remember her!

This "shyness" should be dealt with in a space that these kids can "open up" when they are ready. I know if I was put through that as a kid and was forced to speak when I didn't feel comfortable I would of completely shut down. Extroverted people don't understand what its like to be the quiet type and to feel uncomfortable in social interactions and expects everybody to be like them. We need to look inside these kids and understand their perspective and work with them accordingly to what holds them back. A structured environment where they feel safe, where they can take the time to speak no matter how long it takes to get their words out. Need to develop socially with their peers and then other people they don't know. Every tiny step is a huge step for them, consistently is the key.

People actually have to try these out on kids to see if it would be the best thing to help them and overall I think it did a good job. For me I had extreme sever mutism that affected the relationships with my parents because I didn’t talk to them either, they never encouraged me to talk or took me to therapy to help me and that ended up with me going to school bullied because I rarely talked. I wish my parents helped me like that because now as an adult with social anxiety, I’m going to therapy and it had helped me tremendously, probably could’ve helped me not go thru all of the trauma I had throughout my life if I did went as a kid.

I don't think most people realize how hard this is for them, I was tearing up watching this because I'm so proud of them. I was shy as a kid but I had crippling social anxiety for a few years as an adult, like as severe as this. I pretty much had to design my own exposure therapy because I couldn't bring myself to even call a therapist. What brave little kids, good for them for powering through it.

The same for me.. I can`t call the therapist, but I am ashamed to ask my dad to it, because I am a a grown woman. But he always says I don`t need it anyway, I am normal, I just need to go out more. But I don`t go out because I can`t not because I don`t want. And then he says-If you truly want, you would go out. But sitting mostly at home for almost 10 years was defintely not my wish. I`m 30 now. He refuse to understand. My biggest dream is to become normal, enjoy life, work, meet people, travel, celebrate, find a partner. But I really don`t know how. Because people in my society are mean and arrogant mostly and it is so hard to open to them.

this is exactly what happens to me!! i haven't been diagnosed with selective mutism, social anxiety or any of the kind but everyone knows me as the 'very smart, quiet and shy person'.
i do think i have social anxiety or even selective mutism but i'm too scared to tell my parents because they're probably gonna get mad at me, one time it was the first day of school and my mom asked if i was excited, (i really wasn't) and i said 'i hate talking to people, and i don't like being around people'. my science and french teacher also asked the whole class to write on a sheet of paper stuff about us, for example, what we like to do, where we're from etc etc and the last sentence was 'things to ABSOLUTELY know about me', i didn't hesitate to write that i get very nervous around people and that i never raise my hand in class, that i also stutter a lot and i can't speak in front big crowds of people.
i guess like that my teachers and mom can pick up clues that i hate being around people and possibly one day i'll maybe get diagnosed with social anxiety.. i just wanted to share this because it felt great getting it off my chest, really sorry if i bothered you!..

But I've been making small daily progresses in the last months, and I think that if we dedicate about like 3 years of our lives just pushing through the pain and bettering ourselves, we would get there. It sounds brutal but it's the effort of a life time. And if I could give you some practical advice, start by going to the gym and fixing your diet. This is so generalized- people w/ selective mutism aren’t scared of talking to people, they want to talk to people but relapse into mutism because they’re afraid of the triggers; of having a panic or anxiety attack, which is terrifying for a child. Not saying that this doesn’t work, but instead of addressing what response they have from triggers, why, and helping them learn to cope and overcome them, they’re just teaching them to push past it. They end up never understanding how or why, so mutism can come back in that situation

Apparently it’s also said SM is/can be very misunderstood/misinterpreted.
I have it and I’m not going to bother typing another essay about it but:
      • Freeze response activates when you’re expected to talk
      • Similar to social anxiety with a few differences
      • Can be misunderstood/misinterpreted
It’s getting worse every year. It’s gotten to the point where I’m fussy with my appearance, and so conscious, now to the point I stay home for the tiniest things, though of course I value my learning but my anxiety and fear of judgement prevents me from going to school - it might be hard to understand if u don’t have it, but I hope someone can relate to me ¿

I have anxiety. I remember a couple of occasions with a math teacher I had in 10th grade and it was one of my worst school years alongside 7th and 8th grade. This math teacher has made me break down into tears multiple times. All but one of those times was I able to keep myself from breaking down in the middle of class. This one time, I just couldn't take it. He made me go up to the board 3 times. First time I went up, he told me to work out the question on the board. Second time, he told me to go up again because it was wrong. At this point I was extremely embarrassed and just wanted to hide. Third time, he didn't ask me to go up again but he made me feel extremely embarrassed for getting the answer wrong again and that was when I finally just broke down. I had two friends sitting on both sides and they were trying to comfort me, which I really appreciate that.
There was many other occasions like this, but I would cry at home and not in class. It was honestly a miserable year. He also had the audacity to say he was trying to help me when the school year ended, but that's just not how you go about it, ya know?

I’ve met a child like this before. My mom told me I should go play with him, his mom was nearby and my mom and his family were talking about stuff. I was taking pine needles, he destroyed my pile but I didn’t really care and I helped him destroy it, then I urged him to play tag with me, and he joined in, and he seemed kinda happy, and his mom was balling and crying because he has never done that before. At that time I didn’t know anything and just accepted him as who he was, but now I know what he has been fighting, I feel like a good person. I I’m not bragging, i should never brag about that, but now a days I changed his life, and I just feel so good. I have moved sense then, but I imagine him with a group of kids, playing tag like I did with him.
My mom described what he was going through like this:
“For us, the grass is 1 thing, blowing in the breeze doing its thing, but for him, every single blade of grass is something blowing in the wind and each one has the potential to do anything, and it can be scary knowing there’s thousands of blade of grass with you at all times.”

I developed social anxiety after I went through depression from my parents separation last December. I isolated myself from everyone and everything. It's pretty hard to get over. I'm 19 and I have to take my 17 year old brother practically everywhere because I start to freak out if I'm in public alone. I've been trying to go grocery shopping or to the library alone. It helps if there's not many people around. I hope you cope with your social anxiety. My advice is push yourself a little at a time. Best of luck :)

I’m a triplet, and I’m terrified of socializing, so I’ve grown almost entirely dependent on my sister because we’re in the same grade and everything. Like, when she stopped playing soccer, I stopped playing soccer. I have to sit with her at lunch, and it’s so awkward because I’m too scared to talk to her friends even though they’re all really nice to me. If she’s not in the same class as me, I don’t have anyone to be pair up with for projects. Everyone gets super frustrated with me because they don’t understand what’s going on in my head. I can’t do anything on my own, and I’m going into my junior year of high school. I’m going to have to learn how to become independent before I go off to college on my own, but I don’t know how.

when i was 7 I went to school with a girl that didnt speak but when she did she only spoke by whispering because she thought her "voice was ugly" so she didn't speak but each day at lunch we'd go to a quiet place and have "talking lessons" and we'd sit and talk and I'd tell her that her voice wasn't ugly eventually she started talking normally to me 😊 but not to anyone else..I ended up moving schools but it would be awesome to see what she's up to now..hopefully she doesn't think her voice is ugly anymore. kinda sad to be so scared of your own voice at such a young age.

BehindScars I’m not saying what your friend may or may not have, but one of the traits of being on the autism spectrum is the very different voice (sometimes a croak, or a squeak). You may have helped a differently abled person more than you think, just by treating her like you would anyone else.

I've suffered from selective mutism my whole life and I'm 19 now. I went to therapists and psychologist. I use to break down in tears when anyone would talk to me and I never participated in anything. now that I'm in college it's gotten a lot easier, I still get nervous speaking in front of the class and I have a lot of anxiety about small things like ordering food at restaurants but I continue to try and overcome it more and more. I really feel for these kids and I'm so glad that light has been shown on this serious condition.

He dosen't speak much but he is always there like a shadow, lisening every word we chat, and he enjoy it. :)

This hits me real hard. I have generalized anxiety disorder and it is tremendously scary to face a fear of a normal task. I was fine my whole life until I was 17. I'm 24 now but last year I hit a really bad part of my life due to extreme stress. I decided to change my schedule to all online classes because I kept having panic attacks at university. I became so fearful I was agoraphobic for a bit I would get scared to leave my room. My life changed when I got a puppy and professional therapy. I created goals for the new year and that was to go out more and go to class on campus. The night before class I told my puppy I wasn't going to disappoint her. Now I graduated with a Bachelor's in psychology and working with children and their social emotional health. It breaks my heart to see a child go through this and challenge themselves with exposure therapy. So please be understanding to children who may take time to open up ❤
