      Most Musicians specifically song writers have incredible vocabularies because like people who write books for a living a large part of their job is playing with words
      I had a great uncle who was a musician he never made it huge but he wrote for people who did and really he was just a ole school country good ole boy smoking weed and drinking in his trailer most of the time doing shows to barley keep the lights on ... But that man was extremely intelligent when it came to his knowledge and understanding of the English language ... He taught me to never assume shit about anyone because I probably wouldn't know any of what I just told you if I didn't know him

      Would have loved to hear all of Dave's thoughts on the matter, unfortunately the rest of the panel was too busy looking like idiots. Who the hell ever uses the term niggardly? Why dig so deep for a descriptive word? And, of all the words you could use, that's the one you pick? Dave is 100% right. He's a stupid idiot.

Good gawd, how I could go on and on....

    The onus is indeed upon the speaker not to be misunderstood in the sense of speaking correctly.
    However, the onus is upon the listener to ask someone who knows about such things or to use a dictionary to find out. I still look up words all the time, and I'd consider myself better educated than most.
    Jumping instantly to offence (especially by journalists who should know) when someone else uses an English word correctly does show ignorance (often willing) or some sort of political mischief.

    While I admit that i would have probably perceived the word the way most of the people did (having never heard the word niggardly in my life) I fully object to firing a man because of a lack of knowledge on everybody elses part. His career has been set back 10 years because other people interpreted a word incorrectly? That's a fucking joke.

  • @Cinemadaptation
    @Cinemadaptation 15 лет назад +2

    There are other rafined or sophisticated word that you could use instead of " niggardly ", you know what I mean.
    If you're doing a speech or whatever that is exposed to the mass media, then you have to choose your word carefully, i mean, iggardly is not the only refined word to express the stingy idea. Using the word niggardly is good on some circonstances, it relfects your culture or whatever, but it's really silly to use it in front of the media.

    The human person is not the human body. Where they came from in relationship to where they were born on Earth or supposed heritage.
    The color or shape of their eyes, the color of their skin, their hair or hairdo, the clothing that covers the naked bodies, the shoes, the car, the yard, the fences that we build as supposed strengths.
    Only the human heart. The human race is family, all have the same heart. Angels are like cousins, in relationship to the human heart.
    Angels speak only GOD or LIES.

    English has well over 100,000 words. Some of us who weren't educated in the American public system have larger vocabularies than 10,000 words, thank you!
    Anyway, there are two things to say. Firstly, (at least in American English) they don't sound the same. Note the "ar" and "er" sounds.
    Secondly, if one doesn't know something, then guessing is at best a guess, and at worst, something that will lead to a bad mistake. Why make excuses for someone who is ignorant over someone who isn't?

    Both are correct about the word "niggardly" being uttered. Yeah, I wrote it, shoot me.
    Dave is correct because of the perception that gets applied to the word. Because it sounds like the word I can't write. Which bugs me. As a writer. It pisses me off. So I begrudgingly leave it alone. Because I also have friends who think I shouldn't say or write it. Even though that's a SLIPPERY SLOPE.
    People TRIED to ban Mark Twain's "Tom Sawyer" over that word.
    ENOUGH WRITTEN.
    The perception CAN GET YOU KILLED (for Dave's point).
    As for Bill, though, I get his point, too. We are lowering the bar. We're instead of educating those who aren't privy we're acquiescing their ignorance for fear of an emotional response we're uncomfortable explaining. We give-in to those who need to be educated instead with pats on the head and phony apologies.
    And then every successive generation that comes down the line blames those before them, while my only question to those people is,
    "Who raised these kids?"
    Good stuff, though, to go back and rehash HOW WE GOT HERE TODAY.

  • @richpeltier9519

    How does it's origin being foreign, make it non associated with the other word? It's not, they share a derivation. It came from the same place as the slur.
    Once again Bill talking out his ass and hoping no one is smart enough to call him.

  • @kurtwagnerx3
    @kurtwagnerx3 2 года назад

    Dave is right he just didnt articulate why.
    One the perception of the word in question to the average listener would be that of dropping an N bomb.
    Two I've seen people use it in that context and as a dog whistle to those who dont know what it means.
    Three the the person who used it being a right winger speaking on budget in D.C. a predominantly black city at the time, kinda makes me believe he used it as a dogwhistle. Which in my book is just as good as saying the word straight out. Regardless if he used it correctly, the point being that he knew that the people being spoken to wouldnt completely understand its meaning. Those on his side taking it as a win cause he said the nigword. And those on the other being offended.
    The same way the chicken lady sitting next to dave assumes he and the rest of the audience/and panel dont understand what the word means.

    It's not bright, it's not clever and it sure as shit isn't gonna win you any hearts. Like Dave said there are synonyms you coul duse instead, because, yes it stupifies those that do know the meaning of the word but then again in media if you say something that "sounds wrong" you get hanged. Regardless of how correctly he used the word, he should have anticipated the reaction. And it's not the phonetic proximity to the N word but poor judgement that justify the firing. Dumbing down is always bad, but when he could have said stingy, tight-fisted, miserly etc, niggardly was a poorly judged choice. He put his employer in a position of alienating the ignorant offended or firing him. He made himself a liability.

If your upset and don't know the word you'd ask "what do you mean by that?" or "what does that mean?" unless you yourself are a coward or a racist(or both) you wouldn't assume its racism.. assumption and fear "oh but it sounds close to a racist word" but yet it is in fact not ...
