Have this setup hack on my slim PS2 and love it! I first hooked up to my tv using the old composite cable and it looked so bad. Then I ordered component cable from Amazon and it made a huge difference! I didn't notice much of the slowdown like some people mentioned but this hack method is so easy and clean for my sleek looking slim PS2!
I’ve found that S video is better than the component cables. Just less noise and whatnot
What cable did you buy if I may ask? I want to make the right choice and I need a converter because the component port on my TV has something stuck in there and it's impossible to get out
Does it have EA games on it
Oh.. so you don't need like a mod chip or, just plug the ubs in?
component is a clearer signal as long as you have quality cables. @@opaljk4835
Just a tip for anyone wondering, OPL now uses the acronym BDM in place of USB.
Appreciate all you do for the community
With games over 4GB. I used USBUtil to split the game into smaller pieces. Then you copy them over to the ROOT of the usb drive (don't put them on the DVD folder).
The issue i'm running into is OPL only recognizes 1 game doing this method. Not sure if there is a workaround.
have u try presing R2 buttom in opl? OPL sometimes hides the full list of games so just try all the R and L buttoms since i dont remember which one is.
Just a heads up, make sure there isn't a disc in your console so you can access the menu at 3:28 !
I'm using the same FMcB card in the vid, it will recognize my game but after it says PlayStation 2 it goes black.
What about the save files? Where are they going to go?
Just letting yk. For windows you can format a storage device w/o downloading an xtra program.
At least for windows 10+. There’s a format button when u right click on the storage device.
same with mac.
For FAT32?
Is anyone else getting a black screen after you start the games?
Found any way to fix it?
Can you make a video showing us how to stop the laggy cutscenes from USB. I heard you have to do a different method, but I like they way you explain stuff.

It does have to be said that playing games via usb does have a few caveats. One being that Cutscenes may stutter. This is cause the usb ports are only 1.0 and aren't as quick as the dvd drive at reading. Even the memory card ports are faster! which is why modders made a memorycard that houses an SD card

You find a solution?
The easiest mod of all the consoles I’ve modded thus far. Thank you!
Blaine, nice Tutorial, but doesnt the PS2 have USB1.1 that is too slow to run games at full speed?
I play my backups off USB. It's not as fast as a hdd but it practically takes milliseconds compared to PS4 loading times
It will run the game but there will be longer load times and stuttering video. The limits of USB 1.1 right? The good news is there are viable alternatives to this method which I am sure Blaine will go over. Personally, I like to use a SATA network adapter and hard drive to run PS2 backups on a PS2.
@@blainelocklair agreed. This was worth mentioning, as some people will try this method and find the studer - then they will assume that there is a problem with the tutorial. You Must make new video for the MC2ISO. Thanks
does the mcboot memory card save the game state (for ps2 games) Or you should buy another memory???
@@fetchslaybffr the FreeMCboot memory card is taken up a lot by homebrew applications. I recommend a separate memory card for saving. Also with OPL, you can create emulated memory cards for each game. The only problem is that all games are not compatible.

Can you make a video on how to use Codebreaker cheat codes for your games in FMCB? In my case, I can't figure out how to use them with the games I have saved on my HDD. Love your videos and channel BTW👍
Use opl and Press Triangel.
hi, i followed all the instructions and used the same memory card + usb drive, but my usb drive isn't being recognized. my game files don't show up in opl, and my usb drive doesn't even show up at all in elf. would anyone know why?
This is definitely NOT the best way to play PS2 backups. If you have no other option but a USB drive then yeah go for it. But definitely not games with lots of prerendered cutscenes, especially ones that you cannot skip. I've tried it myself and one game that I cannot recommend to play on a flash drive is Final Fantasy X. It'll work but once you get to the first cutscenes when the Blitzball game begins, the cutscenes studder a lot and you can't skip it. I tried other games too and they worked fine but pretty long load times. One game I also tried was Need For Speed Underground 2. Because it's an open world game, sections take a little long to load.
What would be the best way then? I’m currently planning to buy a ps2 and would rather not be inundated with discs. Thing is, I have no experience with jailbreaking stuff.
@@KasaiKouhaieither a hard drive (if you're planning on getting the original model PS2) or a micro SD card with the MC2SIO memory card if you're getting the slim model.
@@KasaiKouhaiif you buy a FreeMCBoot memory card then you're all set. You just put it in the memory card slot and it's already jailbroken. I actually bought one myself so I can tell you that you don't need to jailbreak it. You're not installing a modchip which that takes opening up the console and using a soldering iron.
So the mc2sio works just like as if you are using a usb drive but is faster?
@@michaelbini1103 if that's how you want to put it, sure. Only thing is some micro SD cards have some compatibility issues. SanDisk or Samsung micro SDs preferably 128GB would work.

Hey, I set up my PS2 to play USB games first, and now I'm trying to upgrade to using SSD. Since i already had OPL configured, the system browser won't show "opl" where it can partition my drive for me with the +OPL folder and so forth. All i see is "OPNPS2LD(v1.1.0 10th)" and 2 other versions (0.9.3 & 1.2.0 MX4). The PS2 in recognizes the drives in uLaunchELF 4.43X, however if i try to create the partition my self through HddManager, the drive almost becomes invisible at that point. I then can't see the folder i just created let alone any of the games any longer. The drive appears to become empty. Could you let me out, I don't know what to do at this point...

Hey Blaine and Fans, I have a plethora of ps1 archives and want to play them on my ps2 slim. I see a lot of people complaining about FMV playback being laggy for PS2 games. Has anyone observed this with PS1 games?
Any idea how to make this work with PSOne games too? Got and and I can for the life of me get them to work
Which opl is it v1.1.0 10th, v 1.2.0 mx4 or v 0.9.3
Hey Blain since the Vita has been getting a lot attention lately since the easy jailbreak could you do a new guide for GTA SA and the required plugins I’m not sure if last years video is still required.
So once all of that is done do you need to insert another memory card into the 2nd slot in order to be able to save progress in the games you play? Or do the save states go into the free mcboot memory card?
It's best to have a 2nd memory card for saves. Think of the FMCB card as a "boot drive" and preserve it that way to enjoy it's value for the years to come.
all of my games are working except resident evil 4 can someone help me with this PLZ
will i need fat32 for the ps2 slim
Hi! I followed his tutorial and I was able to install free mcboot in my memory card. After I rebooted the PS2, free mcboot menu comes up but the only missing option is OPL. So, I can't get into it to go to settings and change USB device mode. Does anyone know why that is be happening?
nice. meaning i don't need to use dvd right? because my ps2 have problem with dvd.
id rather go the HDD mod, thats why the expansion bay was built into it in the first place.
Where is the opl link?
Don't use USB. The loading times are abysmal and there's constant FMV stutters in games
What do you use?
Provide the alternate option, the USB option does not "perform well". Using the HDD expansion bay instead?

Thankyou for this tutorial Blaine. It’s a shame that the usb ports r old and only 1.1, I wonder if in the future there will b a mod to fit usb 2.0 or 3.0. Probably more troubles than it’s worth but modders obviously like to come up with new mods for any consoles or handhelds even just to c wat is possible
The usb I bought from Amazon was 2.0 and it worked, but it has that problem people say the usb method has and that is the cutscenes lag.
@@Lightwaves7984 You're misunderstanding, The PS2's USB Readers are 1.0 thus are locked to certain read and write speeds. You could plug in a USB 3.0 device into it but it would still be stuck with USB 1.0 speeds. This is what causes some games to be unplayable and cutscenes to lag. Because the PS2 can physically only read so much data from the usb ports.
@@tangoman111 ah ok i see
Hello from the future, you can now convert ISO files to ZFO, a format specifically meant for USB on the PS2 and it entirely fixes the stuttering and FMV lag because it uses a new decompression scheme the PS2 can use.
