That's an awesome easy setup. I dusted off my old PS2 slim recently, after finding a copy of FF XII for a very reasonable price at thrift store. I had never played the game before, and it made me come to the realization that back in the heyday, the only games I spent my time on were the Tony Hawk's and GTA's. There's a shitload of games I've never given myself a chance to try. With something like this, I can open a whole new realm of gaming without having to resort to eating ramen for a month. Great video.
Thank you! I highly recommend god of war!
I recommend Okami, if you can find it. It's a beautiful and unique Zelda style adventure
Plausibly, of additional value for your slim PS2 experience if you can connect to a modem's ethernet jack:
There are plenty of PS2 titles with online MP ready to get you playing online. Also, there are titles that can't connect online MP but which also have LAN-play (locally, with another PS2) and, thus with additional equipment and setup, LAN-tunneling online is another set of options for those ~15-20 additional, currently, LAN-only tiitles. Of the titles equipped for online MP, there are plenty of NTSC-U discs that don't need mods for an NTSC-U PS2 to connect online (~50 titles, currently) - your T.H.P.S./THUg/THAW series being among them....
If you have a memory card (for saving a Netfile of online DNS addresses and LAN/XLink Kai address settings), an ethernet cable to plug your PS2 into a modem and at least one PS2 game that came with the Network/Online Setup Utility to create/edit the Netfile, you'd soon run into plenty of players. Discords are where pick up games on the spot along with organized events can be made and all for no additional expense atop ISP.👍
This is definitely the way, but you can also burn yourself out very quickly by having an entire game library available at your disposal. You'll always deal with choice paralysis even while playing a game you're enjoying. "this games cool but now I wonder how this game is played, let me try it out, and ill come back to this another day" just to never get back to that game again. You gotta take it slow and restrict yourself. Buying games use to make you value those games as much as you'd value that same amount of money. If you paid $60, it'll always be a $60 game to you. Paid $5 and it'll be as valuable as $5 to you.
Flatout 2 is a game i highly recommend one of the best racing games of all time in my opinion
OPL use OPL. HDloader is obsolete. OPL can force progressive scan in some game, force HD res on some games, use cheats, load games from the network (SMB), Load your popstarter PS1 Games, use Virtual Memory cards, use ps3 and ps4 controllers wired or wireless using a generic USB BT adapter, load games from the memory card with a moded MC with a SD card soldered to it. is the ultimate ps2 application.
Thank you!
Is OPL restricted to certain models of ps2 or every ps2 console can be modded with it.
@@thepevulspd8023 OPL is a homebrew application not a mod. If you can run homebrew you can run OPL. The exploit I use is FreeMcBoot, but you can use whatever method you like, openTuna, FunTuna, FreeDVDBoot, FreeHDDboot or whatever method ,the point is to be able to run unsigned ELF files.
Is the batch loading utility (many games in a batch instead of one by one) onto mass storage borrowed from the old HDloader to expedite installation for use by OPL+MCboot?
@@thepevulspd8023 yes, ps2 slims can be modded with opl, but the issue is that it's a lot of work on account of having to completely disassemble and solder in the new wiring system to make it run a 2.5 inch drive.
That's a smoker's PS2. Smoking/vaping around electronics leaves them absolutely disgusting. A good visual representation of what it's doing to you lungs.
Not a smoker, my mom was a nurse for an ear nose and throat doctor for years
Smoking yes,vaping no
I recently started cleaning my computer after smoking next to it for a couple of years.... Yeah I haven't smoked any cigarettes since.
Fun fact! Unless there's a clear smoke smell, most of the time when you have that gross yellow dust buildup, it's dust mite poop.
@@Logan-lk1qpgood on you for quitting probably an expensive pc
❤
My 23yo fatbody PS2 is still kicking. Don't need no mods. 💪
Same here especially for all the PS1 and PS2 lightgun games and until they're modded for internal mass storage with OPL+MCboot as the LASERs are getting weak, unreliable not to forget all the capacitors and thernal pads are original and needing replaced if I'm going to keep s400/iLink system linking and that's not to forget ethernet LAN & LAN-tunneling online alongside retro-online MP. Not getting rid of PS2 gameplay anytime soon as its going the distance. 👍
Lol what are you flexing exactly 😂
@@user-ph5ro8xl4o “retro” gaming. Taking care of your stuff. Not being a looser.
@@evosolutionsllc.910Tell him bro.. I share that same flex with you haha. All my PS1 and PS2 games are in perfect working order, because I take very good care of them.
BRUH, HDLoader is sooooo outdated! OPL ("Open PS2 Loader") outperforms it I any way and is STILL constantly being updated! The last version is 5 days old...!
Crt tv is better than up scaling
Plasma TV works great to😊
Which tvs do you recommend? And what should those tvs include?
And preferably a crt that supports component input.
All of these games were mentioned to be played in a CRT, so yeah it's the best way to go
Fr? plasma works decent in retro?@@mattyhayman4540
The PS2 has quite a few options for upgrading.
- I would recommend getting the SATA mod for the Network adapter. Maybe you have an IDE drive but man those things are old. That is a time bomb waiting to happen. Maybe an old enterprise IDE drive with little uptime would be a good option but the SATA board replacement allows you to use modern drives. While the PS2 cannot utilize SATA 3 speeds an SSD still has next to zero seek time. You can also just use a SATA HDD.
- Grimdoomer has a fork of OPL which allows you to use drives beyond 2TB in size. You can also format the drives as exfat. Personally I would prefer ext4 but no support for Linux formats at this time.
- With the network adapter or a PS2 slim you can use the ethernet port. If you have an SMB share on your home network you can set it up with OPL and have all your PS2 ISO’s accessible over the network. I personally have found less compatibility issues with my games running via SMB on my slim compared to the SSD in my fat PS2.
- Using a Dualsense, Xbox, Dualshock 4, Joycons, or any controller besides the Dualshock 2/Retrofighters may sound appealing but keep in mind that only the DS2 and Retrofighters controllers have pressure sensitive face buttons. In most cases this won’t matter but for Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid it will.
- using OPL will prevent you from playing PS1 games. There is a PS1 emulator called Popstarter or something like that but it isn’t the same as the hardware-based backwards compatibility of any pre-9000X PS2. The PS1 hardware basically makes the peripherals work when they aren’t being used for playing PS1 CDs. This includes the network, internal drive, and USB ports.
- worth mentioning that the hardware of the PS2 has a lifespan. The most likely thing to go first is the disc drive. This can be replaced if parts are still available. The capacitors in the power supply are probably going to start dying within the next few years if they haven’t already been. These can be replaced if compatible capacitors are available. Though this will require soldering and desoldering.
I have also been upgrading PS2s and still love the console. It has a great game library and was a big part of my childhood. Having said this do note that software emulation is pretty good for the PS2. PCSX2 is wonderful. Some games, at time of writing, just do not emulate well. Raw Danger is one of them. But if you are interested in modding your PS2 console I would suggest you also pay attention to software emulators as they will, eventually, be the only way to play our favourite PS2 games baring an FPGA coming around.
Don't forget about the MechaCon issue that affects SCPH-50000 models. These are going to require a PicFix mod.
dude i need your help asap
Does rumble works when using Bluetooth controller likes ps5
its going to be another 10-12 years before we see a ps2 core emulates on an fpga. the architecture is massively more complex than earlier generations
PS2 don't work well with HDTVs. Save yourself $300 and get a mids 2000 analog TV. Those TV's will match the ps2 480 output signal and will get you a really nice and clean image. I just bought a 05 Sanyo for 15 dollars from my local thrift store. Best decision ever. I can't believe how good and smooth it looks
Not to mention input lag
Also, the refresh rate of newer tvs messes up the signal and makes it like a really bad CRT with huge line going up it
There a version of Free McBoot that can play PS2 disc images off an SD card connected to a simple adapter in the other memory card slot. It's a faster connection than the USB ports, as fast or faster than the CD drive. But this only works with a genuine Sony MagicGate or 100% MagicGate compatible memory card.
Wait, $300 is considered cheap now?! 😱
The actual mods for the PS2 are cheap but no I would not consider $300 cheap haha. Relative to buying all the HDMI mods, it’s not bad
@@JakeSimmonsThe mods you say in the same video that don’t exist yet?
With OPL you can use a cheap USB BT dongle and just pair any BT controller
Thank you for the advice! 🔥
the only problem with that is not all games like the controller mode on OPL
@@NonsensicalSpudz wym

I was legit looking for a wireless PS2 controller, now I have an option to use a PS5 controller. That is amazing! 🤩
The Retrotink 5X is an amazing system so glad I got it for my N64, XBOX, and PS/PS2 🔥🔥🔥
Now that people have tested the fan for a while I feel confident that this is the way 🥳🥳🥳
Let’s be fr here, the ps2 controller is one of the best controllers out there
I had a wireless controller took like 4 aas and was made by mad katz when ps2 came out
yea but you wont have 100% compatibility cuz ps5 doesnt have pressure sensitive lol
Only bots talk like this
You can build a blue retro if you want
large sata drives are cheap now. they load games faster on OPL. this also translates to noticeably less button lag.
the guy in the vid went on implying sata drive = ssd...smh
@@blakryptonite1 SATA SSDs are a thing though. They’re the 2.5-inch form factor ones
For the love of god please use component cables into the tink 5x so much better picture quality than composite. 🌈
I used the retrovision ones for the highest quality
@@JakeSimmons ok I re watched the footage all good. Just composite Vs composite via the tink confused me.
A good quality component cable, like HD Retrovision's PS2/PS3 component cable, costs about $50 and makes the picture on an HD TV excellent.
That’s exactly what I used and it’s only $30 on amazon!
Just bought these for 30 on Amazon they look amazing on the 5x.
If you think that looks good try using the cables on a sd crt that supports component. Looks absolutely amazing. The best in my opinion
lets just think for a second here... 300 DOLLARS THE SAME PRICE AS AN XBOX SERIES S

The PS2 already has an HDMi cable. It doesn't need a mod because the PS2 already outputs components and RGB Scart signals. So, if you don't want to buy a box, you can just use the HDMI RAD2X for the PS2 or the Hyperkin PS2 HDMi cable. No mods are needed.
Okay so this cable is garbage big dog. And It adds heavy heavy latency try a FPS with that cable compared to a CRT and comp or AV. it tries to deinterlace very badly the retrotink solves that .
@@amped12345I don’t have any issue with that cable whatsoever.
@@amped12345 Can’t load up games I’ve never owned or even heard of.
@@SumDumGy those are some classics highly recommend.
@@amped12345 As a PS2 fan I’ll keep both in mind for future pickups. Thank you for the recommendations!
I used this adapter and mecha pwn on my slim to region mod it.
For Dreamcast, don't use the 5X, use a VGA to HDMI adapter.
Scart, SVideo and Composite don't use the VGA mode and the 5X actually looks worse than the native VGA mode.
Source: The money I would've wasted on a 5X if it weren't for my PS2 which does need it.
DUDE YOU BLEW MY MIND WHEN YOU SAY FMCB
A cheaper alternative to the RT 5X would be the Open Source Scan Converter. Not the most user-friendly device, but it gets the job done without introducing a single frame of lag.
The RetroTink is probably Still cheaper than a unrefurbished PS2 with two 3rd party controllers from DKOLDIES ! 🤣
Bro there is a lot of value in having your consoles on modern TV’s. But THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS?? That’s brand new ceramic brakes in my civic. That’s 20% of my rent. Hearing the price broke my heart and seems unjustified. Thats Coming from someone who’s very financially comfortable even. Imagine the amount of PS2 games I could get in a lot price for $300.
I have a PlayStation 2 emulator for my PC. The games I play on it are awesome.
They make SATA drive adapters to convert the old drives
I like the nostalgia of the fan i would never get rid of it
The company did not make the controller for your ultimate 64 video, you just used their controller.
Have you looked into the MC2SIO? It's an alternative to USB game loading for both Phat and Slim model PS2s. Mainly meant for Slims, as they don't natively have drive expansion, but still works on both nonetheless. It uses the memory card port as it's connector and a micro SD card for storage. The memory card slot has higher bandwidth when compared to USB.
Oh and I forgot to mention, it's only $20 for the adapter. Not hundreds like the EverDrive carts are for other consoles 🥲
I’ve heard about it but I’ll definitely have to look into it more! I want to incorporate my white ps2 slim into my set up!
He mentions the word “cheap” in the video title then the first thing he starts with is a $300 upscaler and says it’s not cheap and compares it to an Xbox Series S l. Then he follows up with something he says is unnecessary 🙄
It would be cheaper to buy a ps3 or ps4 on proper software version, jailbreak it, then run ISO’s from apps that utilizes the PS2 emulation. It’s even upscaled as well.
"Anyone can do it"
*first item cost 300 bucks*
That is optional but I meant that this doesn’t require soldering skills. It’s all plug and play and the rest of the pieces are pretty dang cheap compared to other mods for other consoles
@@JakeSimmons yeah but it's a hassle, the dependencies and the sunk cost for this aren't really worth it when ps2 emulation is a lot easier now on even cheap computers.
@@michaelbuddyemulation aren't perfect. Network adaptor aren't emulated correctly. DVD playback aren't exist, even the CD .

Hello, I'd highly appreciate 2023 guide to PS2 wireless controllers. I was thinking about Brook Wingman or Blue Retro, but my main concern are pressure sensitive buttons on PS2 and I found out that modern controllers doesnt have pressure sensitivity and that even these solutions aren't clear with supporting transmitting pressure sensitive buttons. Retro Fighters controller seems the only option for me. I found discontinued Logitech Cordless controller that seems even better than Retro Fighters, but is double the cost of Retro Fighter for a used controller.
I have a Dream Gear wireless PS2 controller, and it's great. a bit fatter than the PS2, but beyond that, tight responsiveness and I haven't experienced any drift in the just over a year I've had it, and I bought it second-hand. But I haven't tried others for comparison, just throwing out an option.
@@CyberCross222 I bought both Brook Wingman and RF Defender and both are excelent options :) Maybe Brook Wingman with PS3 controller is best native playstation experience but I love the build of RF Defender and I like to use it on PC also

you can just use the component cable for each console, instead of converting to hdmi.
component signal is good enough, there is nothing the 5x actually does to the signal.
you compare composite signal to component signal here..
even new TVs still have component input.

If that's all it takes for you to sub to someone you're incredibly sad

There is a mod that you can read exfat usb drives and two drives at a time. Useful for slim models.
Great video. Exactly what i was looking for. A way to Play my PS2 collection without scattering cases everywhere, and a way to use it with wireless controllers. Hoping to try and use a set of PS3 controllers to keep it all same same. Do you know how those adapters work with multiplayer? Do they at all? Can multiple controllers connect to one or would multiple adapters be needed?
PixalFx plan to release their digital HDMI mod for PlayStation 2 mod next month so it might be the ultimate way to play PS2.
Local Oregonian! Sweet, nice video! Salem here!
In one sentence you talk about the scarcity and expense of an HDMI mod and then not a minute later you state one doesn’t even exist yet.
Oops.
i got a question. if u get one of these mods cause your on original hardware having the roms on a harddrive or memory card will it let you play it at the same performance of the discs.
or is it like emulation and the performance is gonna vary
They will all preform just like they would on discs. The only thing that will vary is load times depending on the speed of the drive you use
@@JakeSimmons ahh thank you
PS2HDMI dongle isn't that bad tbh. Huge step up from composite, and a great alternative to the $300 box for most sane people. Also, SATA converter + 1TB mechanical SATA drive is way way cheaper than a 1TB IDE drive.
that little tiny thing is exactly what I use, it is quite better than any upscaler including the one shilled in the video
Hey hope you can get back to me quickly but could you maybe link me to an Amazon listing for the Sara converter and the 1TB mechanical sata drive
I have Brook Wingman that lets me use my ps4/5 controller with my ps2, which is good because my ps2 controller(original to my fat ps2, original owner being me) just started having problems, and since I do not have a ps4 anymore(have a ps5 so its ok) I can use my ps4 controller.
great video. will be doing this soon. quick question, can i save game save files to the hdd as well or do i still have to save to a memory card??
I’m definitely going to do this. Wanted to know what would be the best ps2 emulator? I’m trying to put a ps2 in my car
Non of them are good rn and it'll be about another 10 years until it's on par with other console emulation
I have the slim PS2 so I use an MC2SIO memory card
Who wanna sell me a memory card with all the bangers 😅😅
If you want to be extra nerdy, Brook makes a controller adapter that pairs with the dualshock 3.
300?! I will wait to the Chinese AliExpress cheap version
there already is and its called gbs control. its 70-100euro
PS2 USA library is around 5TB.
Or just get a CRT for free and will look better than using the retrotink 5X especially with component cables
Nah, upscaled emulation looks better.
Fr though? That classic playstation experience?
Swtching to HDMI on ur PS2 isn't worth it,the colors texture will become duller,as if ur playing an old remaster(ur typical defective remaster) on a PS4,the colors will lose their dark-rich-vibrant-lifely tone, also how on earth to mod a PS2?? Bro u didn't even say how
To legally back up your games do you need a ps2 slim or fat model
Great mods on the PS2
What does modding a ps2 allow you to do?
8 months later
Yeah there is a HDMI mod for the fat ps2
Hey man, I have no idea what im doing lol. I just took apart and cleaned my fat ps2, what should i do next? I dont need the fan, but i want to be able to play all games on it..
I'm a bit confused , aren't the hard drive or usb limited to specific games? I got the experience on my slim model with usb hard drive that games straight up didn't work because of load speed or compatability
A lot of this is all new to me. How can I do this on a PS2 slim model or is that even possible?
What kind of flash drive do you recommend? I keep finding online that only a 1.0 usb would work
2.0 usb works, I use SanDisk
Now how would you save your games if your disk drive does not work? I have a PS2 slim that I would love to get up and running again, but the drive does not work.
How do you get all the games? I’m sorry if I missed you already say this. I’m gonna watch one more time.
do dreamcast, theres like 10000s of gameboy modded videos, im waiting for some updated dreamcast videos
I just did last month!
With freeDVDboot I can install freeHDDboot on the internal hardrive without installing anything on the first memory card or needing a second one
Wow this is amazing great video
I have PS2 slim. Can I use external hard drive for back up of my games or is there storage limitations?
not worth it. Just emulate it. I have a PS2 sitting right here, I know exactly what I need to do and it's simply not worth the time and effort here. Emulation looks better and is easier to do than this mod, more rewarding and zero sunk costs. This one has quite a few sunk costs with it. Paying for the mem card and the BT control addons. The UI looks terrible, the config is still finnicky. It's annoying when people say this is a "super easy mod" when it's clunky at best. .
And there's just no disputing it, given the cost here money better spent elsewhere. And if you think "well what about original hardware" -- yeah except this has already violated most of that by dumping the games and adding a $300 video converter. So that argument is moot, and thse games don't need perfect frame zero-delay either like early NES SNES Sega Atari games do, response precision is very forgiving in ps2 games. When people say they need an original NES and a CRT for sake of speed, I understand that. Not needed here.
The day there's a retroarch core for PS2, I'll sell my PS2. There's literally no other front-end which works universally on everything. I play all other systems on retropie and modded switch retroarch. I'll even get a Mac mini for emulation and do something else with my RPi if there's a decent front-end for emulation on Mac.
Free McBoot sounds like something from McDonalds...
The fact that it’s considered a “hot take” that the PS2 controller sucks just shows how crazy Sony fans can be.
And this is coming from someone who’s had every PS since the PS1 in 1995.
Wow - you know your old when you can say that you've been using a version of HD Loader and Windows HDL for your PS2 for about 20 years or so.
Can I just buy a free mcboot memory card off websites and that’s all I need?
With fmcb you can also set it up so that u don't need the mem card and boot from the hdd
So Can I Use The USB Drive instead Of The Hard Drive Or Do I Need Both? Slim Model
I was about to say how the hell are you going to save all of your games? but totally worth it. I paid $110 for a raspberry pi 3b+ and it has every old system with every single game. You can save and load too. Plus I got one with a sick NES case, system can fit in my palm lol
That's definitely the way 2 go👍 but what do u mean by how do u save?? U use the memory card like normal😆
What was the newest console you could play? I have a 3 model B (not B+). I don't think we can play PS2. Unless, have you managed to get it to work?
Hey, how did you get those games on there if you're disc drive doesn't work? Something fishy is going on here.

No there is a little more set up but it is very simple. I just didn’t include the step by step instructions because there are multiple ways to do it and it’s constantly being updated and improved
Using anything other than PS2 or PS3 controllers would be a waste for certain games. Newer controllers, lack pressure, sensitive face buttons. But I think the retro fighters controller has it integrated.
