I do love Undercover but sometimes they reference shit in such a literal way that it feels like straight up appropriation. Do they ever ask themselves what draws them to hippie/goth/etc culture? The attitudes from those times and cultures are not there, only the skin covering what is in actuality capitalism and mistranslation. And no, cool clothes don't justify that. Beauty in an aesthetic sense is easy, we've got a surplus of that in the world. Beauty in the sense of creating a meaningful link from the past to now and to the future is rare. Try again, Jun Takahashi.
well nice points but that's what I love about Jun Takahashi. I mean since u said u love Undercover, we know what's he has been doing so far right? He or Undercover doesn't have to explain approach to hippie/goth..etc. Jun Takahashi is master of modern punk and he has presented his view of "Punk". I think what combines all of them(hippie/gothic look/ other references) is that they are rebellious, resisting. What those looks have fought for might be different, but it's the spirit I guess. (I'm happy with how he reinvented those looks on current culture while not heavily focused on past. Actually I loved it so much and felt like itself is a meaningful link!) Also I love how he shows punk in modern world is not only violence. I think in this show he proved that there's no limit. Rebel doesn't have to crazy mass. It can be subtle, it can be everyday shit. The way he kept the tension of punk throughout the whole show, through distant looks. From what we usually (culturally) think of punk and all the way to the clean or rather nerdy look.
