great commercial recognized by the museum of modern art as a work of art. a part of the "it's time to fly" campaign, awarded the 2005 AICP award for animation.
Ahh the days when United had the classiest commercials on tv and actually inspired you to fly, mostly with them, because their experience was actually quite good. Hopefully they can return to those days.......maybe.
I am a second generation united employee, and this series of commercials, and this one especialy are definatly touching. I am proud these commercials represent us.
YES I found it! I saw this commercial during a visit to my grandparents in NYC and I loved it, I still love it. how it's animated and drawn is what I love!
Yup that's Redford. Once again, as much as I am a fan of the Gershwin 1980's/90's commercials from United. This commercial so beautifully done in a minute summarized United from early on to present is a work of art...truly.
I have to say that the 4 people who disliked this are not human and may possibly be lacking in brain cells. The way that this commercial shown and the way the music fits with it is what made it not only a work of art, but it touched my heart. Yeah, corny, but good job United, I'm with ya...those other 4....they don't count
This beautiful commercial is made/directed by Michael Dudok de Wit. He also made the Oscar winning animated short Father and Daughter. He's one of my favorite animators :) I also love all the other animated United commercials.
This was the only TV ad that I looked forward to seeing again...and again. If it's possible for an ad to strike a chord deep inside someone, this one can do it.
@MyleneJ My favorite is "The Interview"---the one with the applicant who puts on two different shoes. He's wondering around Central Park, in my mind, before his return flight...the status of his job up in the air. Suddenly his phone rings, it is either his head hunter or the HR of the firm, and HE GETS THE JOB! He jumps for joy and falls asleep on the flight home, his worries abated. :) So nice.
Heh clever, i just realized through the whole commercial the main character is wearing Blue and White.. Which is what United's First ever livery was made of, and Uniteds current livery (at the time of the release) was blue and white.. very nice touch.
THIS specific commercial if my FAVE of ALL time, out of everything else including the other UA's commercials. I believe I heard it during Christmas, and that's why I love it so much. LOVE Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.
Most of the exerpts are direct cuts from the song; Gershwin uses the theme a dozen different ways in his own version so there are a lot of variations for United to choose from. I've only heard one commercial that doesn't use a direct exerpt from the song itself.
They do that because they own the rights to that song. It also used to be the opener of all of their safety announcements, going with an intro screen that scrolled "welcome" in various different languages. They purchased it for $500,000. It will become public domain around 2020 though.
I was looking for this one too! If you enjoy this one, make sure to check out the "making of" videos. My favorite is "The Interview", our job hunter is wearing two different shoes!
United often creates their own intro to the particular part of the Rhapsody in Blue that they end up using. Thus, it might not be an actual song and was made specifically for this commercial.
@kappelmeister123 Why? It's the fight we all have been going through, are facing, and more now than ever living. He's looking for work, he has the same worries we do, and the JOYS we can share. I love how he gives the interview, keeps on target, and does it all knowing he's wearing those different shoes. His worries are our worries, during the low point of the music, and his JOYS OUR JOYS during the height. Just so on target.
I think it can be said that it would be objectively wrong to hate this commercial. Despite any of its content whatsoever, it is already better than 99% of all commercials simply by virtue of not consisting of a loud narrator screaming at you for 30 seconds over obnoxiously loud drum backed music.
Funny how opinions differ. People will hate me for having a different view on this but this may be the worst commercial I have ever seen. Was watching it and almost fell asleep until the voice in the end woke me up again. Hopefully I will never have to see this again. But don't get me wrong, I love United and their other commercials

this is my favorite United commercial. very classy, with dramatic music in the beginning.
A+

This made me cry
Looking back, and watching nearly a decade later, most of the "it's time to fly" United ads still make me cry as well. What a moment in time that was.
This is the best commercial I have ever seen, great animation and music. Very symbolic going through life from a boy to old person.

Oh that is a nice touch
THIS specific commercial if my FAVE of ALL time, out of everything else including the other UA's commercials. I believe I heard it during Christmas, and that's why I love it so much.
LOVE Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.
I like the story behind this commercial and how everything comes full circle in the end.
Most of the exerpts are direct cuts from the song; Gershwin uses the theme a dozen different ways in his own version so there are a lot of variations for United to choose from. I've only heard one commercial that doesn't use a direct exerpt from the song itself.
Long Live the Tulip! I hope you rise again
Music by Gershwin, loved his music, loved the commercial.

It was always so special getting to fly on a 74
I was on the team that did (approved) that commercial. Nice.
And Jerry you were the best client ever. Remember our Emmy nomination for Pella?
@@spaceprogram absolutely. Loved that work.
Slow the speed down to .75, and then enjoy the majesty of this commercial.

My favorite airline was Continental, until was acquired by United.

Yes
lol @ friendship 727. great commercial. the globe sucks.

. Pretentious and vacuous. A nothing add compared to those great ones form PAN AM
Continental ruined legacy United.
