My 'MISSING' Black Series! 350 Miles in the CLK 63 AMG BS

- Am I missing out by not owning a Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG Black Series?! Let's find out with a 350 mile drive down the Pacific Coast Highway towards the new Mercedes-Benz Classic Center in Long Beach. Should it be the next AMG for my collection?!
With the newest GT Black Series in my collection alongside the two previous models; SLS AMG Black Series and C63 AMG Black Series, it might make sense to eventually look to purchase also the other 'missing' three, and undoubtably the next of those to consider would be exactly this; the CLK Black Series. Produced in a limited run of only 700 cars featuring the thumping 6.2l V8 that in this case makes 507hp, it certainly looks the part in Mars Red as per this car that belongs to the Mercedes-Benz Classic division and hence our journey to return it to base at the new Classic Center that only opened a week prior in Los Angeles.
Demand for the CLK 63 AMG Black Series is quickly on the up, however I'm most interested to compare it to my C63 AMG Black Series; a model that is 5 years newer and therefore technically improved but with the hype at the moment around the CLK, I'm curious to find out how urgently I should be looking to buy one.
It's a huge thanks to Mercedes-Benz Classic and the new Classic Center for arranging the opportunity to drive this car, particularly considering the absence of my GT Black Series that is 3,000 miles away in Florida ahead of future trips.

If you ask me the SL 65 black series should be your priority, they are a dying breed of V12's and they are shooting up in value so i hope you get it before it's too late

This has to be one of the best looking car ever made. 10 years old and aged like a classic. Well done. The bolt issue should be a recall from Mercedes/AMG. Huge letdown there! Unacceptable

@@dunes7 M156 internal torx head bolts that corrode and break leading to head gasket failure.
Indeed..Another car that comes to mind is the M3 E92..
I have owned seven M156-powered cars with mileages ranging from 3K to 135K; five of them being CLK63 AMG Black Series and have had ZERO powertrain issues. Nor have I met anyone who has.
Furthermore, about 3 years ago, a friend (senior position with MB of UK and later MB in Middle East) and I did the math for all reported M156 engine head-bolt cases in the UK dating back to 2008: Less than 2.6% rate of failures; well within industry standards and lower than other failures.
THAT was one of the reasons why a recall was not warranted; even when brought up by a handful of disgruntled owners in front of a judge in the USA.
The long drives, ah yes love these and I can't wait for the Clio V6 content on the other channel

I appreciate hearing your thoughts, but if we could have that in the background with the camera pointed forward on these beautiful drives (like through Switzerland) it would be so much better. This PCH drive is one of the best I've done personally. Thanks for sharing!

Ever since I was a kid and Jeremy Clarkson got his CLK black I've been lusting after one of these like crazy. For jokes, I bought a neglected 06 CLK500 with 200k miles for next to nothing and fixed it up to be in really nice shape. At 200k miles the car was unlike anything I've experienced in terms of build quality. After overhauling the suspension and doing a full refresh on the glorious M113 work horse,, the thing rode without a single creak or rattle and the leather inside looked almost like delivery mileage. Such an incredibly smooth power train as well. Kinda sad that I've seen some black series approaching $200k, maybe I'll fulfill my dream some day of owning one....

This is by far my favourite AMG Merc. Has been since it launched. ..and yeah it's about the engine and those fantastic looks. An icon imho. Dream car.
The AMG Black series as a special models collection are all outstanding vehicles, if I’m honest I’d collect them too if I had the means. If you add another to the collection I’ll enjoy watching you drive it as much as the others

In my opinion you should try to prioritize the SL65 Black series. Especially considering it has a monstrous 6 litre v12 and a super wide body
We have a lot of California residents relocating to South Florida for many reasons, one of which is less traffic. We love the history of California car culture and the Pacific Coast Highway is a beautiful setting. Thanks, Tim.

If you ask me, would try to get my hands on the SL 65 black series first and then on the SLK 55 black series. I believe those two are amazing and even more special than the CLK but it is undoubtedly an amazing car. Cheers!
couldnt tell the difference between this and the c63 to begin with, also the buckets being the comfortable seat sounds super backwards

To beat the track jams you have to pick the right time to travel, you could have taken PCH all the way to Long Beach.
12 hours, you were taking your time, I’ve done 5 1/5 hours from San Francisco to Los Angeles on a weekday starting a 10:00 AM.

Crazy place! We were on vacation in California and drove from LA to San Diego early in the morning and it took 1 and 1/2 hours. We left after lunch to return to LA and it took 9 hours! 🤯

PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) is a great drive once you leave the cities.
I can't recall which episode it was, but this one time you started out your drive all happy and giddy, then later on in the day you kept on speaking for minutes on end and finally your voice reached the tone of a bored grumble. Like you needed to pull over & take a nap.

Looks like a good road for your Lotus.
You would have to expect a later W204 to be better in some ways than an earlier W209 or W203.
However for me , the W209 CLK hardtop coupe wins on style alone ,, an absolute future classic .

Tim…I sometimes think I might skip to the end of certain films but never do. Again you bring an interesting view of driving in modern America and I had not expected such traffic problems. That must have been hard work despite your enthusiasm and yet you bring interest to the story. If I had to pick black series cars to own it would be the SL65 first, C63 second and SLS third not saying the others aren't dope as well I'd have those too but the first 3 are my joys
If you add the CLK Black Series please make sure to get a european spec and not a us-spec..
(For those unaware: The european spec has carbon inlays in the doors, while the us-spec that is used in the video has leather because of the side airbags for example)
Euro spec Black Series models are always so much better for these reasons

The positivity of it. People are generally so much friendly towards car nuts in the US than they are in the UK.

The Ferrari Roma is so underrated, it has a gorgeous body to it, so very much a perfect SWB GT
not in the same price range but if you want a toned down Ferrari go for there SUV instead, will probably hold more value too
@@michelhickey5765 If I wanted an SUV their is only one car suitable for that category of vehicle, the G63/G65 and their various iterations by both AMG & Aftermarket brands like Brabus.
Any other SUV is neither good at being a utility vehicle nor are they anymore sporty than your average Volkswagen-Audi Group cookie cutter Brick-On-Wheels with Plastic Trim.....
SUV's are the worst category of car to ever be created, they are rubbish at everything, at best they have average performance or average bootspace for a vehicle that is absolutely gigantic and costs north of six figures for a reasonably good model.
They are un-aerodynamic slabs of metal, I have seen blocks of diamond cut sandstone used to repair the pyramids that are more Aerodynamic than your average SUV, and they probably weigh less too....
Go for SL65 AMG Black Series.. That will be very welcoming in the whole lineup.. I know you don't like that much but get that for the die hard fans like me..

See I think one of these should be added to your collection. As much as your not a big fan of grey scale cars, Clarkson old one would be epic to add to your black series fleet because in black that car just looks epic. Plus its Clarksons old car and that in its self just adds that bit more loud large shouty side to the car.

@Schmee150 At Morro Bay did you drive down to the big rock? you can Park next to it, I did that when I had a Mini and parked next to rock. The Marine layer cloud is strong that day.
@Shmee, what's the 1st or most normal car you have ever owned kr driven.
As mentioned in a previous comment, a red sls gt final series would be a better option then this besides the cost. Would be a slightly better cruiser then your sls bs. Diff ratios aren't as high. Suspension probably less stiff. I do like the final series over the original sls. Has a better body kit, apparently ride and transmission tune.

You need the SL65 Black Series
*Grey Series. The US cars didn't get the correct Black Series interior. ROW got the REAL Black Series, while the US cars have C63 seats and also miss the CF door panels. A real shame for US cars, and a real bonus for ROW cars! The CLK BS was about 2x the price of a standard CLK63 here in Aus. I've been very luck to drive a BS, and it's a fun car!
