Welcome my friends to the first episode of RBR Heroes!! For the longest time you’ve requested to see the Signature RBR style on some legends from the past, so this year we’ve already filmed 8 episodes for you, and it begins today with the first Black Series to truly leave a mark!!
This is the Mercedes Benz CLK 63 AMG Black Series, and those keen-eyed will recognise it as Jezza’s (Jeremy Clarkson’s) beloved old car, now part of the Mercedes Benz UK Press fleet. It is a hugely significant car, as it came during a time of great change at AMG, a company that was back then known for straight-line speed and little else had suddenly made something aimed at Porsche gt3, so let’s explore it all and kick the series off with the CLK Black!
So let’s go back in time to 2007, AMG were nothing like the company they are today. They made hugely characterful cars for sure, but they were known for straight-line performance, ridiculous horsepower figures, and left-field charm. Take the CLK 63 for example. Sure it had the then-new legendary 6.2-litre engine, 474BHP, 0-60 just under 5. But the handling was poor, and that’s kind of what everyone expected. Amazingly, Gear paddles were a new thing, manual mode not automatically shifting up at redline, was touted as an amazing new feature. ESP that kind of switched off a little bit, also a feature.
Just look at what car magazine in the UK said:
“Or you could hold off until the next M3 arrives. It'll be fast, cost thousands less and still have room for four. And we'd put money on it driving rings round the Merc.”
That's never something we’d say about today's AMGs! So, back then AMG didn’t make serious cars. Then Bernd Schneider won the DTM in a modified CLK, and AMG quietly launched unbeknownst to the world, an ultra-rare CLK DTM. Only 100 examples, of which 40 were right-hand drive and 80 convertibles. Despite a list price of €236,060 it sold out, among those buyers were said to be Formula 1 racers Jenson Button, Kimi Räikkönen and Takuma Sato. And it was an insane thing, with 574BHP and 800NM coming from a supercharged 5.4l V8 capable of 200MPH and 0-60 in 3.9 seconds…. 17 years ago!
Then came the first-ever Black in 2006, the SLK. Carbon fixed room, transmission and steering oil coolers, aluminium strut brace, more power… clearly something was afoot at AMG.
Then the car that blazed the trail: the CLK Black Series. it was based on the safety car CLK 63 used at Formula 1. A bizarre comment for us today, as Standard production Line AMG’s are now more than able.
Unlike the then typical AMG Upgrade jobby of the 3k AMG body kit, some wheels and more power, the Black Series changes like the DTM were geared toward serious driving. And today I’ll show you everything!
The 6.2 engine, is legendary. Here it gave 500BHP, 0-60 4.3 seconds and 630nm of torque. It has a more extensive intake system to cool the more powerful 500BHP 6.2 engine, and a more free flowing and louder exhaust.
The rear track is 2.6 inches wider and the front track is almost three inches wider. A completely new suspension system, bespoke spring links, wheel carriers and thrust-, camber- and torque-arms; and ride height and compression and rebound damping are fully adjustable.
AMG wanted to it to be used o track extensively, so cooling measures are abundant and unique to the black. It has an additional transmission oil cooler and an engine oil cooler & a more efficient power-steering cooler.
It also has a multi-plate limited-slip diff again with its own oil cooler. Unlike other AMGs, ESP off that actually means off, and the 7 speed has a real manual mode that didn’t shift up on redline: sounds weird doesn’t it? But the change at AMG had begun
Head of development during this time was Tobias Moers. Father of all the best AMG product to date. According to him, his target was the GT3. These days it doesn’t sound weird, back then it was a jaw drop moment for a company that never came close to that experience.

I will always remember Jeremy's review of the CLK Black in TopGear back in 2008. That was one of my first exposure to AMG and I remember thinking "No way for Mercedes, of all brand, can make such an aggressive and angry car". But guys from TopGear (and Jeremy himself) somehow managed to capture the magic of the CLK Black. To date, I still think it was one of TopGear's best review segment.

This is my all time favorite AMG. Ever!
Mine is just a humble CLK200 Kompressor, built in an era when MB quality control was at its lowest. 16 years later, it still looks beautiful, nippy around town, and goes fast enough on the highway . Inevitably some big repair bills, but not that bad considering.

Great first episode of the series - was telling my clinic attending physician today (that I've been working with for almost 3 years during my residency - that you did this video and then he blew my mind - he OWNED one of these bad boys!!! He has had plenty of track-cetnered cars - he has a GT3 and most recently, a Guilia Quadrifoglio. But he had it about 5-6 years ago, it had 6K miles when he bought it and when he sold it, only 7K miles. He is still kicking himself given how much these classic power cars are worth now - that if he had sold it later, could have made a handsome profit (he broke even). He told me one weak point is that the shift paddles weren't that responsive as the ones of today are....

@@dariusf2 I have a bone stock 2005 CLK320. It's so stock that I don't even want to touch it. Got a set of original 17" CLK wheel to replace the 16's. Might still do an exhaust system because that V6 sounds so sweet! How's the ride on the Bilsteins and 19" wheels?
SL65 black series is still the most craziest car that has ever build by Mercedes and AMG.

I've got a CLK63 and I LOVE IT!
As a proud former owner of this car I loved driving it, despite the slow gear box. It some how felt more alive than the C63BS which I also owned, but which had the a gearbox 2 gens ahead of this one. I supercharged my CLK63 BS, added rev matched downshifting, long tuber headers with resonator delete which made it even nastier. Just an awesome and under rated AMG. Thanks for the video

I would love to see a video with you driving hard an R171 SLK 55 Black. Those cars were so incredibly rare, and despite all of the magazines I read (and have read) and all the car reviews I watch(ed), I have yet to see any review on the SLK Black. It seems like such an intriguing car. I mean I have seen reviews of literally every other mass produced and limited run AMGs and have seen many of them in real life, including such rarities as the SLR, CLK DTM, and even a couple of R63 AMGs (you guys remember those hotted up mini vans?), but have yet to see an SLK Black Series. Anyways, see if you can get your hands on an SLK Black, im sure AMG has one sitting around.

Just another point Raz didn’t touch on.they made 30 RHD for the uk market. So actually it’s more rarer than the DTM in RHD. I actually own one of them in sliver. Best colour combo showing of all its curves, shapes and sizes. 1 owner from new with only 8k on the clock and the all important full Mercedes History. Locked up in my heated garage, what a gem! If your interested I would consider £160k other than that it’s a master piece to read a bedtime story to!

I would suggest if you can even get your hands on one, an early 2000s cl63 or s63 amg. V12 naturally aspirated 440 bhp. Only a very very few made in the world (special ordered and 70 units of the s63 amg and 26 units of the cl63 amg)
Next video, W204 C63? Or BMW E46? Audi RS4 B5? All of them put the respective performance divisions on the map.
Can you do something on the SL Black Series as that is something else to look at.
Hard to choose between the two. But I really like the rear fender duct on the newer black series
Awesome video, I can't wait to see more content on Classics and Heroes. If the R 171 SLK 55 AMG is on the list for future classic content, I have one and would love to participate.
P.S SLK Black Series would be an amazing Heroes car if you can track one down to review.
I also have the SLK55 R171 (2010), hoping it will get to the future classic status. Quick car still by todays standards.

I’d be surprised if the market doesn’t eventually take a more appreciative view of the R171 SLK 55 in the coming years.
I’ve had mine 4 years now and love it’s unique combination of abilities.
Wheel nears be smaller for Black-S, but the way it sits, the rarity , be a diff decision between this and C63 Black-S

What about the 2005 CLK 55 "Avantgarde" Sport Coupe with it's factory AMG quad exhaust, same brakes as the black series, factory upgraded AMG performance suspension, upgraded rear end with differential cooling fins, AMG Body kit with spoiler, and bigger 18" rims and upgraded wider rear tires(Upped from the regular 17" size)? 2005 was the last year for the CLK 55 Coupe(2006 for the Cabriolet) and AMG wanted it's last CLK with the 5.4L N/A M113 to go out with a bang! Only 247 CLK 55 Coupes were sent to the US IN TOTAL for it's final year with only 882 CLK 55 Coupes being made worldwide for 2005 in all trims(Including Avantgarde, Elegance, and the Exclusive Designo trims). Numbers for how many 2005 CLK 55's had the "Avantgarde" Sport kit are unknown however. I'm surprised this model wasn't mentioned though? It's very rare and quite under-reported, not to mention a billion times more reliable than the 6.2L M156. They are also much cheaper than the Black Series or CLK 63 usually(For now, until people wake up and realize that they exist).
Please do the G55 K with the same engine as the CLK DTM
Please do an RBR Heroes on the M3 CSL (or GTR if you can get one) and the E92 M3 GTS.

Since the c-coupe seems to be discontinued do you think they will revive the clk brand?
They already have the SL for a roadster. I don’t think roadsters and coupes on the lower end sold very well, or rather they want to take that body to the high-end cars. So now your entry level Merc coupe/convertible is the E-Class. then you have the SL and new AMG GT higher than that, no more S-Class Coupe too.
