Buying an SL65 AMG Black Series for My Collection?

- The Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series is a beast that's eluded me until now! Thanks to Mechatronik, I'm taking this menacing machine for a drive to find out what it's like and whether it could become a future member of the Shmeemobiles alongisde my SLS BLack Series, and if I'm lucky, the new GT Black Series as well.
The SL65 AMG Black Series is unbelievably cool in terms of its appearances; massive arches, an aggressive stance, and a thumping 6l Biturbo V12 making 670hp and a whopping 1,000Nm. Versus the regular SL65 it took out 250kg, thanks mostly to removing the folding hard top roof mechanism and making it a fixed coupe, along with the use of carbon fibre re-inforced plastic for the body panels - only sharing the door and mirrors with the regular car. It was the third model to wear the illustrious AMG Black Series badge and only 350 units were built in total.
Following on from the SLK55 and CLK63 Black Series models, it arrived before a pause of a number of years until the arrival in quick succession of the SLS and C63 models. Both of the latter two have always been absolute highlights to me, the SLS AMG Black Series being one of my favourite cars ever made hence making a purchase of one earlier this year, and the C63 BS standing out on each occasion I've driven one. However, ever since it launched in 2008, I have always felt the SL65 BS is one of the meanest looking cars on the market and been intrigued to find out what it's actually like.
With every finger and toe crossed that I'll be lucky enough to secure an allocation for the brand new AMG GT Black Series, I'm certainly considering expanding my collection and possibly with the addition of an SL65 Black Series, hence the desire to visit Mechatronik and have a go to see what it's like.

To date I've never had the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the SL65 AMG Black Series, but with my obsession with the SLS BS Shmeemobile, and desire for the new GT BS, it's time to find out what the earlier SL65 is actually like and whether it should be a future addition to the garage?! SL65 Black series is a masterpiece. It's really a car to be collected. I always love the CL65/S65 Coupe/Cabriolet. But the freaking Black series are so different.

I was an intern in the Mercedes plant in Bremen two years ago. At the end of the assembly line of the roadsters (sl, slc) they had the first of these sl black series on display, in the original spec shmee was talking about.
They had a sign with its figures and numbers next to it and it said:
"Preis: unkäuflich" which basically means "unbuyable".
The SL65 bs is my favourite car of all time, and the last Black series I expected you to get. The Diamond white examples are particarily dashing imo

@@warpspeed9877 Very few of the lower mileage or collector Black Series models were specced in black. The ones that are typically go for much lower prices as they are less desirable. The earlier BS models were launched in Silver with the more recent, post 2010 models being launched in Solar Beam yellow and with the newest model offering a really nice deep orange colour derived from their GT3 race car with a Grey option as the launch spec.
Black is not a good look on these cars at all, the colour should exaggerate or at least compliment the OTT bodywork and aero. Black is normie spec

WOW, the C63 with the GT3 engine really has to be the AMG of my dreams . you luckily own your dream AMG but sadly i doubt that I will even get the chance to see or hear that beautiful silver beast who's raspy bark sounds ferocious.

The SL65 Black Series and the SLS Black Series are the most beautiful out of them all... Elegant and aggressive at the same time!

Wow... I did not know an SL 65 Black series V12 Bi Turbo existed... probably because of living in Australia where we don't get these fantastic machines. That is one awesome collection of proper cars... proper cars for proper motoring enthusiasts from what I can tell.
Hands down, the best-looking shape in the entire SL class history, of which I'm not a huge fan, tbh, but this one I absolutely love. It might not be the best sports car Mercedes have made, but it'd definitely be a stellar addition to the collection. Buy it, Tim, do it for us, we'll enjoy it vicariously! ;)

I think once you've replaced the seats and put a more boisterous exhaust on there and get it on some twisty roads or the auto bahn, this thing will definitely be a worthwhile purchase. Such a legendary car and pushing numbers we are not likely to see ever again from any manufacturers.

Don't let something minor like a seat stop you if you love the rest of it. You can always replace it or give it to a shop to reupholster the seat to properly support you in a way that's more comfortable

Tim, I spotted probably one the first AMG GT Black Series to ever go on public roads a week back not too far from Affalterbach. It was a fully blacked out one, as far as I can tell there is not a single image of this car online, but trust me when I say this, the car looks absolutely mindblowing in all black. You should definitely add one to the collection, since you are missing a few big wings to eat McDonalds off!
If you do buy it, how about making it a project car? New wheels, new interior, new exhaust, V12 engine tune.....that will be ABSOLUTELY *HEAVENLY!*
I feel like in this day and age, you can very tastefully improve it.

The SLS 65 AMG Black Series is arguably one of my most favorite cars of all time. It's beautiful.

Amg and Porsche are the pinnacle of performance to me. Both look incredible and can perform like no other whilst not having the hype beast feeling of a Lamborghini or a Ferrari. Mercedes really knows how to make a damn car!

V12's are special machines. They drink fuel when you put your foot down, but the way they sound and how they get along is absolutely unique. If I win the lottery, I would grab either an Aston Martin or a BMW with a V12.

I think the SL65 looks fantastic. Maybe if it had the same exhaust upgrade that you had on the SLS then it would provide that exhaust tune it is missing. Lovely machine but maybe you need the American spec with the comfy seats🤷🏼♂️

Awesome video Shmee! A friend of mine in Norway owns one of the few SL65 Blackseries in white (1 of 18)! And we passed 60k kms on the oddmeter a few years ago, being properly used.
Standard SL65 AMG are a steal at the moment. A light tune plus an Akrapovic exhaust would do the trick. ✅✅
