I use the Cobra Mk 3 as my primary BGS ship. A 2b rail gun, a fixed missile, and two MCs can take down most NPCs when fully engineered. It's a great ship, and it's not just for beginners. I have > 10k hours in the game, and it's the ship I spend most of my time in.
