After doing what I thought was a thorough job, the damn things began peeling again. I since bought "leather" inserts to put on and also some hard plastic ones. Bought some 3m adhesive. Took the car to an upholstery guy, he did brand new inserts and took care of a couple other details for me for $300. Totally worth it to me, as I don't have the tools or know-how to do the job properly. Now my doors look great and it only took a day.
Crazy, I know. The upside is that it's been a few years for me know and no issues whatsoever. If your vinyl insert is weathered, shrunken, and just won't stay in place, this does the trick
Thanks for the video. I would suggest being much less cavalier with that screwdriver when taking the liner off... there is no telling how many additional scratches you put on the door panel.
the first mistake in this process is using spray can adhesive. Using that crap is 100% future fail. Use what the pros use, Contact Cement. Not spray can, use the out of the can contact cement. It can be sprayed but it can also be brushed. Do both sides and allow things to tack up and it will never come off again.
You are absolutely correct. I used that stuff a long time ago (around '78 maybe '790 for a vinyl top repair and I could find what I was looking for without having to buy a very large quantity so I did what I did. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Im struggling trying to remove the lower felt type layer. Its practically welded to the plastic. Wondering if i should use a heat gun or steamer to try to soften the glue up underneath. Concerned with warping the plastic though.
I'm not sure why you are having such a hard time with that inner layer. I know it takes some effort but usually comes out once you get it started. You could try heat, but not on "high" and I would stay away from steam. Steam may create more troubles of its own.
Yah, I kept popping them in but in a few places it just wouldn't stay. Usually spending extra time cleaning always does the trick. Unfortunately, this was not one of those times. They haven't moved since installation and they are still looking pretty. Thanks for commenting.
@@DocsBoost Nah they’re are on there mostly. Covered with Gorilla glue extreme adhesive.. The other material like leather and vinyl are made more to stretch around some of the corners. I figured this would be an easy job.
If I were to replace the vinyl inserts with new vinyl inserts I would replace the cardboard-like backing that is on the panel so the vinyl gets glued to the backing and not the bare door panel surface. Just another quick note, the backing I speak of has to be removed before applying the plastic inserts. I am not sure if you did that or not. Good luck with the vinyl. Let me know how it turns out.
I own a 1969 Cobra 🐍. It still has the original door panels. I also own a 2009 GT500 I bought new in November 2008. About 5 years ago I noticed the panel inserts were pealing away. I was completely dumbfounded. Used gorilla glue to hold in place. It’s pealing again. The 1st video of yours I watched was the time you had your clutch replaced. I followed your advice and replaced mine with the McLeod and also replaced the drive shaft with the 1 piece aluminum drive shaft from Ford Motorsport. Anyhow, where did you get these inserts?
We'll have to wait and see how all that plays out. I don't want to think about the negative possibilities only the good stuff. Yes, it does look good, still, today with no rattles. LOL
@@DocsBoost oh it’s for sure better then the peeling leather with chunks of dried up glue. That and the plastic handle lever things on the back of the seats to recline them forward that like to snap off are my 2 biggest gripes about the 05-09 interior. Nice work. Gave me some ideas if I end up picking up an 07-09 Shelby
In a previous video, you suggested vinyl top adhesive. Now 3M 90. Is the vinyl top better for the repair of the existing components and 3M 90 better for the full replacement? Or have you thought on it and decided this is better? Also having my door melt off in my 2013 due to this Texas heat. The entire interiors being damaged by the heat actually.
Good question. I actually answered that the best way possible in the other video thread just a few days ago. Either of these two products will work great for you (1) 3M Super Trim Adhesive Yellow or (2) 3M Hi-Strength 90 Spray Adhesive. Either one holds up pretty fucking good under the Phoenix heat. I think you should be good in Texas too. My 2012 GT500 never had any door panel issues since new. I keep the car garaged when not in use (it is my daily and has been for 9+ years). Good luck Justin, and I am sorry to hear about your panel problem. It is no joke and no fun.
I have a '14 GT and mine has different panels, the inserts are only above the arm rest they dont have the small part he says you have to push real hard so no
I can't count the times through the years people have asked that. LOL It's my son's breathing. I make him wear a mask most of the time. Sometimes it slips by. Most of the time I redo the clip when I can. The comment is hilarious. Thanks.
Best, most detailed installation of this panel that I've found on RUclips, thanks for this. Appreciate it
Thank you.

Great story. It's nice to hear about someone that would spare no stone unturned to keep their Mustang looking smart.
Where did you get the brand new inserts
@@hope4all562 the guy who did the job had all the materials. The job was finally done right
We all paid extra for the faux leather vinyl trim only to now pay more and spend all this time to revert back to the base plastic trim on our own. 😅

Well said my friend. I will if I ever have to do it on another vehicle.
Looks good. It's just a matter of time till mine starts to peel. Common on the S197. 👍
How true. Now you know you have the once and done true fix. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave your comment.
Supers ready!!!
That was so darn cute😊 8:21

I got a plastic panel and they’re in and they don’t fix right around the window switch bezels. Probably switching back to leather now.
Sorry to hear they don't fit right. Both a little off or just one? Were you able to send them back?

I have an 07 gt500 with only 17k miles. Inserts started peeling a couple months ago 😒
Thank you! :)
mmmmm now instead of peeling bubbling leather we will get rattling plastic when that adhesive fails in a couple of years also. looks good though!

it's funny you bring up the seat lever. I have to replace that on this '07 for the second time. LOL

Great video! I see that the panels say they are for a 2007, do they fit all s197?
I know they won't fit GT500 in the S197 platform. I am pretty sure they fit all the rest.
@@DocsBoost I have a 2011 with that issue, I wonder if they will fit
I think if your inserts are cloth, you are good. If the inserts are plastic like my GT500, the inserts do not work. Check online to be sure.
I just looked, and 2010 - 14 is a different insert. but inserts are available.
