- It’s a tired trope of the tech world to say that “the sequel is what version one should have been.” But in the case of one of the most famous brands in mobile phone history, you can’t help but wonder what might have happened if last year’s Motorola Razr … had been the Motorola Razr 2020 instead.
In last week’s Motorola Razr 2020 Hands-On I took you through the differences between the Razr 5G and its 2019 predecessor, so you already know that the spec sheet upgrades and hardware tweaks Motorola made to modernize this model … well, they worked. The Razr 2020 / Razr 5G feels less like a first-generation folding phone, more like a fully-realized fashion flip phone - and that added polish now puts it within striking distance of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip.
Those improvements are more than enough to make me commit to the Motorola Razr 5G as one of my two everyday-carry devices for 2020 - but $1399.99 is a lot to spend for anyone who doesn't have a device-review budget. CORRECTION: In this video, I stated this is the only foldable with any kind of water resistance. That's not true. Samsung's Z Fold 2 also features an "Anti-Erosion Waterproof Coating" on its internal components, similar to the coating on the Razr 5G's internals. MrMobile regrets the error.

what was exciting and adventurous ? isn't it better to finally have big-ass practical phone screens ? take for example galaxy note.. much better to put an spen in there rather than folding some shit

@el capitano well yeah, they are practically selling different devices under the same name. In my country Note20 Ultra comes with both Exynos and 8 Gb of ram, there is no other version available. Even if I could understand processor difference, some 4G/LTE models having 8 Gb (compared to last years 12 on Note10+ and 12 on other Ultra devices) is only their greed and cutting corners wherever they can, nothing else.

Yeah, I was surprised that LG decided to omit me from the first wave of devices, since everyone knows how excited I am by strange new form factors. Maybe they were just trying to make sure I actually took a real vacation instead of a working one. :)

I don't know if you'll actually read this, but this video sent be down the path of upgrading to the Razr. I started with the "when phones were fun" videos. I felt nostalgic, and then I saw this in my recommended feed. This is a great video that captures everything that I have wanted from a new phone that's not another rectangle snore fest. I've said to myself for years that I'd love my old razr flip phone with spotify and navigation and voila here it is! Thank you for the review!
I actually really like the design this time. The first one was good, but it's better this time. It seems really polished with those metallic elements and a more seamless curved design.

this. 1500 bucks for a midrange phone. you get the same specs without fold for under 300. doesn't matter how expensive production etc is. unless this is available for under 800 bucks, it will stay a niche product.
i can literally find the zflip and Motorola for cheaper than an iPhone pro max, I can find them for just around 900 bucks

Not quite I have found the call sound quality on Samsung phones lacking, the last two that I have had I sent back for refund and changed for another brand. Good to see Motorola place an emphasis on this instead of gimmicks.
Z Flip 2 will most likely end up having an even larger outer usable screen compared to the Razr 5G.

@Sphereslip It is the reason why the crease in the middle is less deep than Samsung. It's actually very clever, compared to a simple hinge that everyone else makes

The video is clocks in to a respectable 8 minutes, but damn, you fit all of the important things a customer need without sacrificing the meaty and juicy bits, good and bad on this video. Mad props, Michael.
The screen folding mechanism that Motorola used hides the creases exceptionally well compared to the Z Flip but the drawback is that it cannot stay open in multiple different positions. Still, a great design to get rid of that crease!
... It doesn't get rid of the crease at all. It just makes them slightly shallower, but instead of one crease you get THREE. They also get SIGNIFICANTLY worse with age whereas Samsung's (& now Motorola's as well) UTG foldables' creases stay much the same throughout ownership. The RAZR/5G's display not actually being laminated to anything was a major problem.
@@Cooe. I didn't say it got rid of the crease. It's just a lot less pronounced. Yes, you get 3 creases but they are shallow and you don't see them at all compared to what Samsung is doing. They are a bit more visible after 2-3 years of use, but even then they are no wear the level of Samsung. I switched from a Z Fold 4 to a OnePlus Open and it is so much better to not see the crease there.
Really love to have one. If only it doesn’t exceed the $1,000. The price just too absurd to me to justify for a phone.
If they can get it down to 799 or 899 id be more interested.

Another great video Michael! Though I like the RAZR remake idea, I doubt that it has any future. At least in that classic form witch is great yet restrictive from designing perspective. Maybe Motorola may look for an entirely new design for foldables.

Just throwing out there, I've been using galaxy z flip 5g since release and its working great just like non flip phone. I don't baby it. If you're thinking about getting one, go for it. I have zero regrets. Its got major cool factor
