  • Lofotr Vikingmuseum - Borg , Lofoten North of Norway
    Borg 700 - 1160 A.D.
    In the early iron age (Norwegian 500 - 1030 A.D.). Borg had already been a powerful centre for hundreds of years. The oldest version of the Chieftain´s house was built around 500 AD, and became part of a centre of social and religious status that already had existed forlong times and was to last for several centuries.
    An archeological sensation:
    1983 saw the start of the excavation, and in 1986 - 1989 specialists scholars from the entire Nordic area converged Borg. The excavation slowly but surely uncovered the largest house in the Viking world, both in Norway and in Europe.
    There are several foundation walls in the vicinity that indicates habitation before the chieftain´s hall was raised and after it was demolished. When the excavation began, some of the subsided turf walls were just visible in the terrain. The excavation uncovered the floor-plan. Traces were found of the outside walls, entrances, partitions, floors, hearths and the internal load-bearing posts. The 83-metre house had been divided into 5 main rooms, as shown in the reconstructed building today
    Viking festival - Wednesday - Sunday, August 5 - 9 2015

    This fascination with Vikings feels like a modern concept to me. I am 47 years old, I don't remember people in my younger days having much of any interest in Norse culture. We seem to be retreating into history looking for some kind of shared identity.

      It's because the present sucks - and life in modern liberal democracies is insanely boring and doesn't allow for manliness - and because this is pretty much the only way European people are allowed to express their identity and experience their roots a little without fear of political repression, as ethnic pride and advancing one's group ethnic interests are totally off limits.

    I could go along with the gorgeous scenery, the actors just fine..., until 2:38 when I saw the dread locks, and my brain screamed "Nooooooooooooo...!!!" I am an avid student of history, including Viking history, and my college minor was Art History. Don't any of these people look at all the old art, the carvings, how the people are depicted, whether in wood or stone? Haven't they checked out the artifacts found at Viking archaeological digs - which include combs made of antler and wood? How about the ancient writer who talked about how handsome the tall Vikings (Rus) were, the fact that local women admired them because they washed their faces, combed their hair, bathed once a week, and carried a change of clothing with them (obviously, not all Viking sexual activity was rape). I had to stop watching the History Channel's Viking series because of the inaccurate details - horses, hair styles, beads in male beards, inaccurate hair styles (not depicted in ancient carving), dirty faces, for a start and the horrible "modern" music on the title intro. I couldn't take it.
    Speaking of "music," yours at 3:12 hit a sour note, too. Don't include modern "music" that sounds horrible with depictions of Viking times.

    • @TaiganTundra
      @TaiganTundra 5 лет назад

      I've heard people claim vikings (more accurately norse people) wore dreadlocks, but as far as I'm aware there is no historical evidence to back it up. However I'm sure someone somewhere in that time and region had it, probably some weirdo hermit living in the mountains, but it was certainly not a trend.

    • @bevanderson6245
      @bevanderson6245 5 лет назад +3

      I did an Art History minor, as well as studied Viking history for decades. Right, there is NO historical evidence to back up the idea of dreadlocks on Vikings, nor beads in male beards (beads were for women). As I already indicated, there is written evidence from an Arab traveler who wrote about the cleanliness of the Vikings; they washed their face and hands daily, combed their hair daily, bathed once a week, and carried a change of clothing with them, and he frankly states that the local women liked that about the Vikings. I'd take that to mean there wasn't as much rape as is suggested by the more modern blanket statement "Vikings engaged in rape, pillage, and plunder." [Normal women have always liked men with clean bodies, neat and clean hair that is styled. If they have facial hair, then neatly trimmed beards, not the skraggly look so famous today, along with bedhead hair. Ugh.]
      We know from archaeological sites that Vikings were traders, and when they settled in new areas their mercantile skills were as great as their ability to farm land. Combs made of antler, wood, or bone have been found at various archaeological digs where Vikings lived (as well as their very ancient Celtic cousins who were also written about as being vain and concerned with their hair and clothing). In all images I have seen of ancient Viking artifacts that depict men and women, I've never seen dreadlocks, but the hair of both sexes and and beards of men are always neat and trimmed, always well-groomed.

      Now you know what Mexicans feel every time hollywood pretend to represent our culture, especially our ancient culture. For some reason it seems all media produces love to show dirty faces whenever they are portraying any culture. That is annoying as hell. Even when they show the Aztec who historically were fanatics of cleanliness and bathed twice a day. Movies about Rome, Asia, or even as recent as World War II they always show everyone with dirty faces, it's annoying. And yes definitely the hair styles! They inject this stupid and idiotic idea that everyone had dreadlocks in every ancient culture everywhere. And as for the music the #1 most annoying and atrocious thing Hollywood does is play Caribbean/Cuban or Spanish music whenever they are depicting Mexican culture. That is as stupid as playing chamber music when depicting the Bayou culture of Louisiana. Mexico has the widest and oldest musical tradition of any country on this side of the hemisphere and yet they see fit to inject elevator music or that cringy Caribbean music despite the fact that Mexico is mostly an Arid and Mountainous culture.

    • @bevanderson6245
      @bevanderson6245 3 года назад +1

      @Grim Peeper - If you look at old art work from the Paleolithic to the late 20th century you will NOT see dreadlocks represented. Braids, long wavy hair sometimes pulled back in a pony tail so it doesn't get in one's eyes while fighting or doing work indoors or out, headbands or kerchiefs or bonnets to keep one's hair off of one's face, or caps to keep one's head warm in winter (all practical things for people who worked hard and didn't really have time to style their hair)..., no dreadlocks for the Vikings (or Celts before them), or other epochs of history. Dreadlocks are a modern invention of people who think the dirty, unwashed, unkempt, bedhead "style" - along with wrinkled and dirty clothing - is a cool aesthetic.
