    My first trip to Europe was the first week in April, and it was to Zurich and your tips were right on. What I would add is that just because a lot is closed on Sundays, the trains will still be packed, and the streets will still be busy. Second, if you can afford it upgrade to a first-class rail ticket even on the S-bahn commuter trains because of just how packed 2nd class can be, even at odd times of the day. Third if you are there on a Sunday most stores in train stations will be open so you can get food and if you are looking for inexpensive food try places such as the CO-OP stores which have a good selection of food to grab and go.

      These are great points!! Yes, I noticed that the streets (especially pedestrian streets) are still quite busy on Sundays - I think it was all of us tourists walking around unsure what to do, haha! And thankfully yes, the stores, pharmacies, and coffeeshops in train stations are absolutely your best bets on Sundays! I'll have to try out your tip to book first-class on my next trip to try to avoid the train crowds!

    Liechtenstein is a great day trip from Zürich. There isn't that much to see and do in Vaduz. But its beautifull and so is the train ride

    Hello Eliz and Derek, Harriet and I have been to Zurich and to other parts of Switzerland. The travel tips were spot on. Sundays are slow for sure there. A bit pricey, but has the charm and beauty
    that they are known for. Public Transport is excellent. No vehicles are needed near the city center. Food very good. As always, thank you for all that you do for travel tips. Love you Dearly ❤❤❤Harriet, Jim and Yuki Richmond, Va.

    My big surprise upon visiting Zurich was that it wasn't in the mountains. I'd been to Switzerland many times (it's my favourite European country) but I've always entered from Italy. That way you get all the spectacular mountain views and the cities are surrounded by mountains. We travelled to Zurich by train and entered through France and I was shocked to see that the landscape was flat! I thought Switzerland was all mountainous, so my don't would be that don't think you get those high mountain views in Zurich, the mountains are actually quite a distance away!

    • @MeansToTravel
      @MeansToTravel  Год назад +1

      YES! I was a bit surprised about that too! I was able to see the alps as we were landing into the airport, but I hope to go back to Switzerland again sometime soon and see more of the mountain regions like Interlaken. That said - since it was so cold when I was there in January, I'm not sure I would have faired well in the mountain snow lol!

    I holiday in Zurich about once a year, using Zurich as a base to explore the whole of Switzerland. I get a first class Swiss Travel Pass valid on ALL the public transport (including the boats) except purely tourist lines up mountains. I agree with almost everything you say, except Davos is the one mountain resort I dislike! In the last 30 years it has become a 'concrete jungle'. Re Sundays, all Swiss cities tend to be quiet on Sundays. HOWEVER THE EXCELLENT PUBLIC TRANSPORT CONTINUES TO OPERATE AT FREQUENT INTERVALS!

    • @MeansToTravel
      @MeansToTravel  Год назад

      Yes the public transit in Switzerland is wonderful! Do you have any favorite day trips from Zurich that I didn’t mention? I’d love to hear them!

      @@MeansToTravel Saas Fee in Valais canton is my favourite mountain resort - but note that it is about three hours from Zurich by Intercity train to Visp, and then postbus route 511. Engelberg is another delightful mountain resort, much closer to Zurich than Saas Fee or Davos. You get the regional train to Lucerne, and then a narrow guage train. Takes just under two hours. Berne is a beautiful city (centre a Unesco world heritage site) and surprisingly small. Fast rains are every 30 minutes 7-days-a-week, and take just less than an hour.

    Having seen Mark's comment, it seems like he is either franchising or adopting 🙂 Good tips all around--many towns (or businesses) have days when they close, so it is good to check ahead if you have must see/do destinations. The thing about the tax, though, is why do the countries do the refund? Is it because most people don't take it and so the temptation of the refund is attractive to tourists and is a net win? I think I'll ask Steve Leavitt and Steve Dubner about this, because it seems very behavioral economics.

    • @MeansToTravel
      @MeansToTravel  Год назад

      Thanks so much for watching! That's actually a fair point, and I'm thinking of changing the way I frame these types of videos to not encroach on Mark. And funny you mention it about the VAT tax....I just got back from two weeks in Greece and flew from Santorini to London as my "last departure from the EU" before returning to Chicago. The Santorini airport didn't have a VAT refund drop box or kiosk and London is no longer in the EU, so I didn't end up getting the refund I deserved. Not sure how to reckon with that, and seems like a Brexit issue that hasn't been resolved!
